Abstract:This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of several central objects in Dunkl theory as the dimension of the underlying space grows large. Our starting point is the observation that a recent result from the random matrix theory literature implies a large deviations principle for the hydrodynamic limit of radial Dunkl processes. Using this fact, we prove a variational formula for the large-$N$ asymptotics of generalized Bessel functions, as well as a large deviations principle for the more general family of radial Heckman-Opdam processes. As an application, we prove a theorem on the asymptotic behavior of weight multiplicities of irreducible representations of compact or complex simple Lie algebras in the limit of large rank. The theorems in this paper generalize several known results describing analogous asymptotics for Dyson Brownian motion, spherical matrix integrals, and Kostka numbers.

Abstract:We study the bi-laplacian Schrödinger equation with a general interaction term, which can be either linear or nonlinear, and is time-dependent. We prove that the global solutions for this equation are asymptotically given by a free wave and a weakly localized part. The proof relies on constructing the Free Channel Wave Operator in a new way, based on the method developed from recent studies \cite{SW20221}.

Abstract:We follow recent formulations of dimensionally reduced loop operators for quantum field theories and exact representations of probabilistic lattice dynamics to identify a new scheme for the evaluation of partition function zeroes, allowing for the explicit analysis of quantum critical phenomena. This new approach gives partition function zeroes from a factored quantum loop operator basis and, as we show, constitutes an effective mapping of the renormalization group $\beta$-function onto the noncommuting local operator basis of a countably finite Hilbert space. The Vafa-Witten theorem for CP-violation and related complex action problems of Euclidean Field theories are discussed, following recent treatments, and are shown to be natural consequences of the analyticity of the limiting distribution of these zeroes, and properties of vacuum regimes governed by a dominant quantum fluctuation in the vicinity of a renormalization group equation fixed point in the infrared.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to derive new representations for the Anger--Weber function, exploiting the reformulation of the method of steepest descents by C. J. Howls (Howls, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 439 (1992) 373--396). Using these representations, we obtain a number of properties of the large order asymptotic expansions of the Anger--Weber function, including explicit and realistic error bounds, asymptotics for the late coefficients, exponentially improved asymptotic expansions, and the smooth transition of the Stokes discontinuities.

Testing the Instanton Approach to the Large Amplification Limit of a Diffraction-Amplification Problem

Abstract:The validity of the instanton analysis approach is tested numerically in the case of the diffraction-amplification problem $\partial_z\psi -\frac{i}{2m}\partial^2_{x^2} \psi =g\vert S\vert^2\, \psi$ for $\ln U\gg 1$, where $U=\vert\psi(0,L)\vert^2$. Here, $S(x,z)$ is a complex Gaussian random field, $z$ and $x$ respectively are the axial and transverse coordinates, with $0\le z\le L$, and both $m\ne 0$ and $g>0$ are real parameters. We consider a class of $S$, called the `one-max class', for which we devise a specific biased sampling procedure. As an application, $p(U)$, the probability distribution of $U$, is obtained down to values less than $10^{-2270}$ in the far right tail. We find that the agreement of our numerical results with the instanton analysis predictions in Mounaix (2023 {\it J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} {\bf 56} 305001) is remarkable. Both the predicted algebraic tail of $p(U)$ and concentration of the realizations of $S$ onto the leading instanton are clearly confirmed, which validates the instanton analysis numerically in the large $\ln U$ limit for $S$ in the one-max class.

Abstract:Within the framework of the Coulomb fluid picture, we present a unified approach to derive the large deviations of bulk and extreme eigenvalues of large Wishart matrices. By analysing the statistics of the shifted index number we are able to derive a rate function $\Psi (c, x)$ depending on two variables: the fraction $c$ of eigenvalues to the left of an infinite energetic barrier at position $x$. For a fixed value of $c$, the rate function gives the large deviations of the bulk eigenvalues. In particular, in the limits $c\to 0$ or $c\to 1$ it is possible to extract the left and right deviations of the smallest and largest eigenvalues, respectively. Alternatively, for a fixed value $x$ of the barrier, the rate function provides the large deviations of the shifted index number. All our analytical findings are compared with Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, obtaining excellent agreement.

Abstract:We establish a large deviation principle for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, providing precise control over the left tail of the height distribution for narrow wedge initial condition. Our analysis exploits an exact connection between the KPZ one-point distribution and the Airy point process -- an infinite particle Coulomb-gas which arises at the spectral edge in random matrix theory. We develop the large deviation principle for the Airy point process and use it to compute, in a straight-forward and assumption-free manner, the KPZ large deviation rate function in terms of an electrostatic problem (whose solution we evaluate). This method also applies to the half-space KPZ equation, showing that its rate function is half of the full-space rate function. In addition to these long-time estimates, we provide rigorous proof of finite-time tail bounds on the KPZ distribution which demonstrate a crossover between exponential decay with exponent $3$ (in the shallow left tail) to exponent $5/2$ (in the deep left tail). The full-space KPZ rate function agrees with the one computed in Sasorov et al. [J. Stat. Mech, 063203 (2017)] via a WKB approximation analysis of a non-local, non-linear integro-differential equation generalizing Painlevé II which Amir et al. [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 64, 466 (2011)] related to the KPZ one-point distribution.

Computing large deviation rate functions of entropy production for diffusion processes by an interacting particle method

Abstract:We study an interacting particle method (IPM) for computing the large deviation rate function of entropy production for diffusion processes, with emphasis on the vanishing-noise limit and high dimensions. The crucial ingredient to obtain the rate function is the computation of the principal eigenvalue $\lambda$ of elliptic, non-self-adjoint operators. We show that this principal eigenvalue can be approximated in terms of the spectral radius of a discretized evolution operator obtained from an operator splitting scheme and an Euler--Maruyama scheme with a small time step size, and we show that this spectral radius can be accessed through a large number of iterations of this discretized semigroup, suitable for the IPM. The IPM applies naturally to problems in unbounded domains, scales easily to high dimensions, and adapts to singular behaviors in the vanishing-noise limit. We show numerical examples in dimensions up to 16. The numerical results show that our numerical approximation of $\lambda$ converges to the analytical vanishing-noise limit within visual tolerance with a fixed number of particles and a fixed time step size. Our paper appears to be the first one to obtain numerical results of principal eigenvalue problems for non-self-adjoint operators in such high dimensions.

Abstract:We study the crossover from the macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) which describes 1D stochastic diffusive systems at late times, to the weak noise theory (WNT) which describes the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation at early times. We focus on the example of the diffusion in a time-dependent random field, observed in an atypical direction which induces an asymmetry. The crossover is described by a non-linear system which interpolates between the derivative and the standard non-linear Schrodinger equations in imaginary time. We solve this system using the inverse scattering method for mixed-time boundary conditions introduced by us to solve the WNT. We obtain the rate function which describes the large deviations of the sample-to-sample fluctuations of the cumulative distribution of the tracer position. It exhibits a crossover as the asymmetry is varied, recovering both MFT and KPZ limits. We sketch how it is consistent with extracting the asymptotics of a Fredholm determinant formula, recently derived for sticky Brownian motions. The crossover mechanism studied here should generalize to a larger class of models described by the MFT. Our results apply to study extremal diffusion beyond Einstein's theory.

Abstract:The limiting absorption principle asserts that if H is a suitable Schrödinger operator, and f lives in a suitable weighted L2 space (namely H0,1/2+σ$${H^{0, 1/2 + \sigma}}$$ for some σ>0$${\sigma > 0}$$), then the functions R(λ+iε)f:=(H-λ-iε)-1f$${R(\lambda + i \varepsilon) f := (H - \lambda - i \varepsilon)^{-1} f}$$ converge in another weighted L2 space H0,-1/2-σ$${H^{0, -1/2 - \sigma}}$$ to the unique solution u of the Helmholtz equation (H-λ)u=f$${(H - \lambda) u = f}$$ which obeys the Sommerfeld outgoing radiation condition. In this paper, we investigate more quantitative (or effective) versions of this principle, for the Schrödinger operator on asymptotically conic manifolds with short-range potentials, and in particular consider estimates of the form‖R(λ+iε)f‖H0,-1/2-σ≤C(λ,H)‖f‖H0,1/2+σ.$$\| R(\lambda + i \varepsilon) f \|_{H^{0, -1/2 - \sigma}} \leq C(\lambda, H) \| f \|_{H^{0, 1/2 + \sigma}}.$$We are particularly interested in the exact nature of the dependence of the constants C(λ,H)$${C(\lambda, H)}$$ on both λ$${\lambda}$$ and H. It turns out that the answer to this question is quite subtle, with distinctions being made between low energies λ≪1$${\lambda \ll 1}$$, medium energies λ∼1$${\lambda \sim 1}$$, and large energies λ≫1$${\lambda \gg 1}$$, and there is also a non-trivial distinction between “qualitative” estimates on a single operator H (possibly obeying some spectral condition such as non-resonance, or a geometric condition such as non-trapping), and “quantitative” estimates (which hold uniformly for all operators H in a certain class). Using elementary methods (integration by parts and ODE techniques), we give some sharp answers to these questions. As applications of these estimates, we present a global-in-time local smoothing estimate and pointwise decay estimates for the associated time-dependent Schrödinger equation, as well as an integrated local energy decay estimate and pointwise decay estimates for solutions of the corresponding wave equation, under some additional assumptions on the operator H.

Asymptotic Behavior of Degenerate Linear Kinetic Equations with Non-Isothermal Boundary Conditions

Abstract:We study the degenerate linear Boltzmann equation inside a bounded domain with the Maxwell and the Cercignani-Lampis boundary conditions, two generalizations of the diffuse reflection, with variable temperature. Our abstract collisional setting includes the relaxation towards a space-dependent steady state, and the case where the collision kernel has heavy tails. For both boundary conditions, we prove for the first time the existence of a steady state and a rate of convergence towards it without assumptions on the temperature variations. Our results for the Cercignani-Lampis boundary condition make also no hypotheses on the accommodation coefficients. The proven rate is exponential when a control condition on the degeneracy of the collision operator is satisfied, and only polynomial when this assumption is not met, in line with our previous results regarding the free-transport equation. We also provide a precise description of the different convergence rates, including lower bounds, when the steady state is bounded. Our method yields constructive constants.

Abstract:We prove Lifshitz behavior at the bottom of the spectrum for non--negative random potentials, i.\,e.\ show that the IDS is exponentially small at low energies. The theory is developed for the breather potential and generalized to all non--negative random potentials in a second step. Since our models need not be ergodic, we need to identify the minimum of the spectrum. We deduce an initial length scale estimate from the Lifshitz bound for the breather model and combine it with a recent Wegner estimate to establishes Anderson localization via multi-scale analysis. Finally, for ergodic models, we complement the Lifshitz behavior with a lower bound. We provide detailed proofs accessible to non-experts.

The proof is based on constructing in a new way the Free Channel Wave Operator, and further tools from the recent works \cite{Liu-Sof1,Liu-Sof2,SW2020}. This work generalizes the results of the first part of \cite{Liu-Sof1,Liu-Sof2} to arbitrary dimension, and non-radial data.

Abstract:We consider the long-time behavior of the massless Dirac equation coupled to a Coulomb potential. For nice enough initial data, we find a joint asymptotic expansion for solutions near the null and future infinities and characterize explicitly the decay rates seen in the expansion. This paper can be viewed as a successor to previous work on asymptotic expansions for the radiation field. The key new elements are propagation estimates near the singularity of the potential, building on work of the first author with Wunsch and an explicit calculation with hypergeometric functions to determine the rates of decay.

Abstract:We consider a spatially inhomogeneous public goods game model with diffusion. By utilising a generalised Hamiltonian structure of the model we study the existence of global classical solutions as well as the large time behaviour: First, the asymptotic convergence of the PDE to the corresponding ODE system is proven. This result entails also the periodic behaviour of PDE solutions in the large time limit. Secondly, a shadow system approximation is considered and the convergence of the PDE to the shadow system in the associated fast-diffusion limit is shown. Finally, the asymptotic convergence of the shadow to the ODE system is proven.

Large Deviations for Small Noise Diffusions Over Long Time

Abstract:We study two problems. First, we consider the large deviation behavior of empirical measures of certain diffusion processes as, simultaneously, the time horizon becomes large and noise becomes vanishingly small. The law of large numbers (LLN) of the empirical measure in this asymptotic regime is given by the unique equilibrium of the noiseless dynamics. Due to degeneracy of the noise in the limit, the methods of Donsker and Varadhan (1976) are not directly applicable and new ideas are needed. Second, we study a system of slow-fast diffusions where both the slow and the fast components have vanishing noise on their natural time scales. This time the LLN is governed by a degenerate averaging principle in which local equilibria of the noiseless system obtained from the fast dynamics describe the asymptotic evolution of the slow component. We establish a large deviation principle that describes probabilities of divergence from this behavior. On the one hand our methods require stronger assumptions than the nondegenerate settings, while on the other hand the rate functions take simple and explicit forms that have striking differences from their nondegenerate counterparts.
