Abstract:We consider a two-dimensional Hamiltonian system perturbed by a small diffusion term, whose coefficient is state-dependent and non-degenerate. As a result, the process consists of the fast motion along the level curves and slow motion across them. On finite time intervals, the large deviation principle applies, while on time scales that are inversely proportional to the size of the perturbation, the averaging principle holds, i.e., the projection of the process onto the Reeb graph converges to a Markov process. In our paper, we consider the intermediate time scales and prove the large deviation principle, with the action functional determined in terms of the averaged process on the graph.

Abstract:We consider the problem of soliton-mean field interaction for the class of asymptotically integrable equations, where the notion of the asymptotic integrability means that the Hamilton equations for the high-frequency wave packet's propagation along a large-scale background wave have an integral of motion. Using the Stokes remark, we transform this integral to the integral for the soliton's equations of motion and then derive the Hamilton equations for the soliton's dynamics in a universal form expressed in terms of the Riemann invariants for the hydrodynamic background wave. The physical properties are specified by the concrete expressions for the Riemann invariants. The theory is illustrated by its application to the soliton's dynamics which is described by the Kaup-Boussinesq system.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of Lipschitz continuous solutions of nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations in the periodic setting. Our results apply to a large class of Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equations. Defining Σ as the set where the diffusion vanishes, i.e., where the equation is totally degenerate, we obtain the convergence when the equation is uniformly parabolic outside Σ and, on Σ, the Hamiltonian is either strictly convex or satisfies an assumption similar of the one introduced by Barles–Souganidis (2000) for first-order Hamilton–Jacobi equations. This latter assumption allows to deal with equations with nonconvex Hamiltonians. We can also release the uniform parabolic requirement outside Σ. As a consequence, we prove the convergence of some everywhere degenerate second-order equations.

Abstract:We construct strong solutions for a nonlinear wave equation for a thin vibrating plate described by nonlinear elastodynamics. For sufficiently small thickness we obtain existence of strong solutions for large times under appropriate scaling of the initial values such that the limit system as $h\to 0$ is either the nonlinear von Kármán plate equation or the linear fourth order Germain-Lagrange equation. In the case of the linear Germain-Lagrange equation we even obtain a convergence rate of the three-dimensional solution to the solution of the two-dimensional linear plate equation.

Abstract:We study a model of internal waves in an effectively 2D aquarium under periodic forcing. In the case when the underlying classical dynamics has sufficiently irrational rotation number, we prove that the energy of the internal waves remains bounded. This involves studying the spectrum of a related 0-th order pseudodifferential operator at spectral parameters corresponding to such dynamics. For the special cases of rectangular and elliptic domains, we give an explicit spectral description of that operator.

Asymptotic integrability of nonlinear wave equations

Abstract:We introduce the notion of asymptotic integrability into the theory of nonlinear wave equations. It means that the Hamiltonian structure of equations describing propagation of high-frequency wave packets is preserved by hydrodynamic evolution of the large-scale background wave, so that these equations have an additional integral of motion. This condition is expressed mathematically as a system of equations for the carrier wave number as a function of the background variables. We show that a solution of this system for a given dispersion relation of linear waves is related with the quasiclassical limit of the Lax pair for the completely integrable equation having the corresponding dispersionless and linear dispersive behavior. We illustrate the theory by several examples.

Abstract:For diffusion processes in dimension $d>1$, the statistics of trajectory observables over the time-window $[0,T]$ can be studied via the Feynman-Kac deformations of the Fokker-Planck generator, that can be interpreted as euclidean non-hermitian electromagnetic quantum Hamiltonians. It is then interesting to compare the four regimes corresponding to the time $T$ either finite or large and to the diffusion coefficient $D$ either finite or small. (1) For finite $T$ and finite $D$, one needs to consider the full time-dependent quantum problem that involves the full spectrum of the Hamiltonian. (2) For large time $T \to + \infty$ and finite $D$, one only needs to consider the ground-state properties of the quantum Hamiltonian to obtain the generating function of rescaled cumulants and to construct the corresponding canonical conditioned processes. (3) For finite $T$ and $D \to 0$, one only needs to consider the dominant classical trajectory and its action satisfying the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, as in the semi-classical WKB approximation of quantum mechanics. (4) In the double limit $T \to + \infty$ and $D \to 0$, the simplifications in the large deviations in $\frac{T}{D}$ of trajectory observables can be analyzed via the two orders of limits, i.e. either from the limit $D \to 0$ of the ground-state properties of the quantum Hamiltonians of (2), or from the limit of long classical trajectories $T \to +\infty$ in the semi-classical WKB approximation of (3). This general framework is illustrated in dimension $d=2$ with rotational invariance.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss some results on integrable Hamiltonian systems with two coordinate variables. We revisit the much-studied problem of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator and discuss its (super)integrability in the light of a canonical transformation which can map the anisotropic oscillator to a corresponding isotropic one. Following this, we discuss the computation of first integrals for integrable two-dimensional systems using the framework of the Jacobi last multiplier. Using the latter, we describe some novel physical examples, namely, the classical Landau problem with a scalar-potential-induced hyperbolic mode, the two-dimensional Kepler problem, and a problem involving a linear curl force.

Abstract:We extend the method for constructing symmetry operators of higher order for two-dimensional quantum Hamiltonians by Kalnins, Kress and Miller (2010). This expansion method expresses the integral in a finite power series in terms of lower degree integrals so as to exhibit it as a first-order differential operators. One advantage of this approach is that it does not require the a priori knowledge of the explicit eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian nor the action of their raising and lowering operators as in their recurrence approach (2011). We obtain insight into the two-dimensional Hamiltonians of radial oscillator type with general second-order differential operators for the angular variable. We then re-examine the Hamiltonian of Tremblay, Turbiner and Winternitz (2009) as well as a deformation discovered by Post, Vinet and Zhedanov (2011) which possesses reflection operators. We will extend the analysis to spaces of constant curvature. We present explicit formulas for the integrals and the symmetry algebra, the Casimir invariant and oscillator realisations with finite-dimensional irreps which fill a gap in the literature.

Abstract:The long time behaviour of solutions of (Dirichlet) initial boundary value problems for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the case of (asymptotically) periodic boundary conditions of special (one-frequency) structure is considered both theoretically and numerically. The results of numerical simulations are shown to confirm the theoretical description in the parameter ranges where the assumption about the one-frequency character of the Neumann boundary values is (theoretically) admissible, whereas in the other ranges they suggest a more complicated description of the behaviour of these values.

Abstract:We compute the Large N limit of several objects related to the two-dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills measure on compact connected orientable surfaces of genus larger or equal to one, with a structure group taken among the classical groups of order N. Our result shows the convergence of all Wilson loops for all loops within a topological disc and all simple loops.

Abstract:We study the bi-laplacian Schrödinger equation with a general interaction term, which can be either linear or nonlinear, and is time-dependent. We prove that the global solutions for this equation are asymptotically given by a free wave and a weakly localized part. The proof relies on constructing the Free Channel Wave Operator in a new way, based on the method developed from recent studies \cite{SW20221}.

Abstract:We construct asymptotic solutions of a special type for the nonlinear system of shallow water equations in two-dimensional basins with gentle shores and depth function , where . These solutions represent waves localized near the shorelines (coastal waves) and generalize the (linear) Stokes and Ursell waves. The waves we consider are periodic or close to periodic in time. The corresponding asymptotic solutions are represented in a parametric form based on the modification of the Carrier–Greenspan transformation and are generated by asymptotic eigenfunctions (quasimodes) of the operator , where is the gravity acceleration. These eigenfunctions are, in general, related to the trajectories of a Hamiltonian system with the Hamiltonian , which forms billiards with "semi-rigid walls." In the general case, the existence of such billiards assumes the integrability condition that is practically impossible to be satisfied in real situations. However, we consider a "degenerate" situation where the trajectories are localized in a very narrow vicinity of the boundary , and the asymptotic eigenfunctions resemble the well-known "whispering gallery" wave functions in acoustics. In this case, the requirement of integrability is eliminated (the corresponding billiard is "almost integrable" for the considered set of trajectories). One important difference between the problem we study and the classical whispering gallery situation is that, due to the degeneracy of the depth function on the boundary , the trajectories are always normal to the boundary, and the requirement of convexity of the domain of the considered problem is absent.

Abstract:We investigate the small-mass asymptotics of a class of massive $d$ dimensional angular integrals. These integrals arise in a wide range of perturbative quantum field theory calculations. We derive expressions characterizing their behavior in the vicinity of the massless limit for all cases with up to two denominators. The results established in this work are applicable to phase-space calculations where an integration over virtuality including the massless limit is required.

Abstract:Dynamical systems subject to perturbations that decay over time are relevant in describing many physical models, e.g. when considering the effect of a laser pulse on a molecule, in epidemiological studies, and celestial mechanics. For this purpose, we consider time-dependent Hamiltonian vector fields that are the sum of two components. The first has an invariant torus supporting quasiperiodic solutions, and the second decays as time tends to infinity. The time decay is modelled by functions satisfying suitable conditions verified by a proper polynomial decay in time. We prove the existence of orbits converging as time tends to infinity to the quasiperiodic solutions associated with the unperturbed system. The proof of this result relies on a new strategy based on a refined analysis of the Banach spaces and the functionals involved in the resolution of suitable nonlinear invariant equations. This result is proved for finite differentiable and real-analytic Hamiltonians. Analogous statements for time-dependent vector fields on the torus are also obtained as a corollary. These results extend a previous work of Canadell and de la Llave, where only exponential decay in time is considered. The relaxation of the decay in time makes the results in the present paper suited for applications in many physical problems, such as celestial dynamics.

Abstract:For the Davey-Stewartson I equation, which is an integrable equation in 1 + 2 dimensions, we have already found its Lax pair in (1 + 1)-dimensional form by nonlinear constraints. This paper deals with the second nonlinearization of this (1 + 1)-dimensional system to obtain three (1 + 0)-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with a constraint of Neumann type. The full set of involutive conserved integrals is obtained and their functional independence is proved. Therefore, the Hamiltonian systems are completely integrable in the Liouville sense. A periodic solution of the Davey-Stewartson I equation is obtained by solving these classical Hamiltonian systems as an example.
