Abstract:Starting from a recent book on Derrida and psychoanalysis, I return to the controversy between Lacan and Derrida in the 1970s. Its focus was the letter as interpreted by Lacan in a commentary of Poe’s “Purloined Letter”. While agreeing with some of Derrida’s objections, I conclude that Lacan makes stronger points about the destination of the letter. I give my own example, Kafka’s “Letter to the Father” in order to argue that one can state that “a letter always reaches its destination” even if it has not been delivered.

Abstract:Desire, in Lacanian psychoanalytical approach, is a central idea around which all other notions revolve including object petit a, das Ding the Other and subjectivity. Employing Lacanian treatment of the symbolic order, the present paper seeks to demonstrate the object cause of desire represented in the characters of Ian McEwan's Atonement and Saturday. The study follows the fields of interest in the characters including Briony and Cecilia in Atonement and Henry, Theo, and Daisy in Saturday. The central objective is to indicate why the subjects after the satisfaction of their needs still feel dissatisfied, empty and unfulfilled. The subjects, realizing what the Other offers is not what they actually aspire, create for themselves what Lacan called object petit a, a reminiscent of the original lost object. This psychological mechanism is demonstrated in the present analysis by investigating the events that entail the subjects to act in accordance with what the Other aspires. Upon examination of these events, it becomes clear that none of the desires, which the subjects assume as their own, is that of the subject; however, they all pertain to the Other. Unlike the function of "need", the emergence of desire is extensively an unconscious process, and it is boldly troublous and rather impossible to put it into language. The leading characters recognize that they want something; however, they do not know what it is. Frustrated each time by the illusion of locating the truly lost object, they will thus change into desiring subjects.

Abstract:The word "desire" is one of the core terms in Lacan's psychoanalysis. As the famous saying of Lacan: "the desire of man is the desire of the Others", Lacan's theory of desire is based on Hegel - Koyev's theory of desire. By falsifying the subject, Lacan developed a unique theory of desire, that is, desire is the alienated subject, the fantasy formed in the pursuit of what Freud called the Das Ding which Lacan called the Objet petit A, and finally the fantasy constructs desire retrospectively. The study of Lacan's theory of desire helps to provide more sections for the study of contemporary social phenomena and social development.

Abstract:Winnicott was able to say that Lacan's paper on the mirror stage "had certainly influenced" him, while Lacan argued that he found his object a in Winnicott's transitional object. By following the development of their personal relations, as well as of their theoretical discussions, it is possible to argue that this was a missed encounter--yet a happily missed one, since the misunderstandings of their theoretical exchanges allowed each of them to clarify concepts otherwise difficult to discern.

Abstract:Subjectivity in cultural studies is believed to be culturally constructed. Unlike humanists cultural theory marks subject as cultural construction rather than fixed and timeless entity. Formation of subjectivity reflects the social process that constitutes us as subjects. A Subject is not born but is transformed into one from a concrete being by his immersion into culture. Subjectivity is precisely the condition of our being which enables us to recognize ourselves as subjects or persons. Subjectivity is something in us by which we understand the world around us. The present paper is a reading of Lacan with some help from some other thinkers to understand how a subject is formed. It further outlines role of desire in formation subject and finally there is an attempt to relate the nature and dimensions of the subjectivity with what theory has to aim and subsequently aims to achieve.

Abstract:Este artigo demonstra a maneira pela qual o pensamento de Nancy sobre o toucher é herdeiro, mas, ao mesmo tempo, radicalmente se distancia da fenomenologia do corpo de Husserl em Ideas II. Em primeiro lugar, demonstro a maneira como o toque é crucial para a constituição de Leib como: 1) unidade não sujeita à fragmentação, 2) orientação ponto zero, e 3) portador de sensações localizadas. Em seguida, demonstro a maneira pela qual a compreensão de Nancy do toucher subverte as características husserlianas de Leib e assim mina a centralidade da intencionalidade que permanece presente no Husserl tardio. Abstract: In this article I show how Nancy’s thinking on toucher inherits but also radically departs from Husserl’s phenomenology of the body in Ideas II. First, I show how touch is crucial to the constitution of Leib as 1) unity not subject to fragmentation, 2) zero point of orientation, and 3) bearer of localized sensations. Then, I show how Nancy’s understanding of toucher subverts the Husserlian characteristics of the Leib and hence undermines the centrality of intentionality that remains present in the later Husserl. Abstract:This article presents the research results of Jaque Lacan’s ethics of psychoanalysis. Lacan suggested both the new theory of desire and the new ethics which is motivated by a desire as a criterion of an action. In this article the author reconstructs the Lacan’s system of arguments, which proves the fact, that desire can be considered as a criterion of an action, not its motive. This paper shows that the ethics of desire, that was originally developed in relation to the problem of the criterion of an analytical act, is also important for the ethical position of the patient, and therefore can be presented as a universal ethic. The article also provides evidence that psychoanalytic work can be considered as an ethical practice, since there is a transformation of the ethical position of the patient in it. Initially, the patient takes an ethical position that can be defined as the desire to achieve the good, it would lead the subject to satisfaction, comfort and tranquility. On the other hand, psychoanalysis reveals a different ethical perspective to the patient, where the desire defines how the patient chooses the path. First of all, this is about the analyst’s desire. This term means a special formation that was resulted by the analyst’s own analysis. Lacan believed that a psychoanalyst is the result of his/her own analysis, one of the main effects of which is the analyst’s desire. The analyst’s desire serves as a criterion for the analyst to perform analytical acts in his/her psychoanalytic practice. But the ethics of desire is important not only for the psychoanalyst. The author’s task is to show that a patient who came to the analysis for the sake of therapy also performs the transformation of an ethical position in the process of analysis. This is the basic condition of psychoanalytic therapy. The main purpose of psychoanalysis is the study of unconscious desire, as a result of which the patient becomes an analysand and gets the opportunity to face his/her desire and follow it. To follow the desire means to decide to abandon the perspective of satisfaction and to bet on what is opposed to peace and completeness, and what can be defined as life.

Abstract:The thought of the psychoanalytical thinker, Jacques Lacan, is examined in this paper with a view to ascertaining the place and function of the so-called imaginary in it, the symbolic as well as the ‘real’. The extent to which the imaginary or realm of images is construed by Lacan as being the order of identification and a (spurious) sense of unity of the ego or self, is contrasted with the symbolic (or linguistic) order as that of the subject and of desire, in fact, of the subject of desire. The place and meaning of the enigmatic third register in Lacan’s thought, namely the ‘real’, is also addressed in relation to the question of desire. Furthermore, the question is raised, where philosophy in its traditional sense belongs - to the Lacanian register of the imaginary or to that of the symbolic.

Abstract:This commentary analyzes how Lacan criticizes ego-psychologists for having turned Freud’s approach to psychoanalysis into a form of “therapeutical abuse” in which the analyst is supposed to adopt a parental position in regard to the patient, and the patient a loving position in regard to the analyst. Opposing this normative trend, Lacan suggests in “Demand and Desire in the Oral and Anal Stage” that the role of the analyst is not to repress the patient’s desire in the name of the satisfaction of its needs but, on the contrary, to help the patient retrieve their desire against what is normally supporting its erasure.

Abstract:We start with a description of Lacan's work that we then take into our analytics methodology. In a first investigation, a Lacan-motivated template of the Poe story is fitted to the data. A segmentation of the storyline is used in order to map out the diachrony. Based on this, it will be shown how synchronous aspects, potentially related to Lacanian registers, can be sought. This demonstrates the effectiveness of an approach based on a model template of the storyline narrative. In a second and more comprehensive investigation, we develop an approach for revealing, that is, uncovering, Lacanian register relationships. Objectives of this work include the wide and general application of our methodology. This methodology is strongly based on the "letting the data speak" Correspondence Analysis analytics platform of Jean-Paul Benz\'ecri, that is also the geometric data analysis, both qualitative and quantitative analytics, developed by Pierre Bourdieu.

Abstract:Abstract The article contributes to the long-standing debate about Lolita’s final nine chapters by arguing for a much tighter connection than previously acknowledged between Nabokov’s most famous novel and Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu. Turning on the claim that Dolly’s alleged letter from Coalmont has a precedent in the Recherche, the essay proposes that Humbert fabricates the letter from Dolly for similar reasons that Proust’s Narrator makes himself believe that a telegram he receives from Gilberte is a missive from Albertine. The phantom letter in Lolita and the garbled telegram in the Recherche are psychologically therapeutic exercises in misreading and gestures toward paths not taken. But in Nabokov’s case, it is also an experiment in writing the kind of literary freedom he theorized in his 1941 lecture on drama titled “The Tragedy of Tragedy.” The article argues that Dolly’s potential vanishing act pays homage to the mercurial personalities that Nabokov encountered in Proust’s novel and the unconventional literary structures he admired in the works of Pushkin and Chekhov.

Abstract:Jacques Lacan was a French psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who created an original metapsychology based on a close reading of the work of Sigmund Freud combined with the structural linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure. Lacan's concept of the unconscious is that of a highly structured entity consisting of interlacing chains of signifiers (sounds, printed words, and images) based on principles of metaphor and metonymy. In this review article, the author provides a brief biographical summary of Lacan's formative years, his education, and his career, followed by a discussion of some of his major theoretical concepts. Lacan's three registers or orders of existence, the Imaginary, the Symbolic and the Real, and their relationship to normal and psychopathological mental functioning are described. Lacan's major structural diagnostic categories are defined as well as his proposed etiology for the development of each of them. Lacan's formulation of need, demand, and desire are described as well as his late concept of le sinthome. Brief clinical vignettes are used to illustrate some of Lacan's theoretical concepts, and some clinical recommendations are provided. Lacan's theories and practice were controversial over his almost 50-year career, and his work is largely unknown to psychiatrists and psychoanalysts in the United States. This article is an effort to fill a small part of this lacuna.

Abstract:In this study, I approach and examine the desire of Alma among the characters in Tennessee Williams' play “Summer and Smoke” with Jacques Lacan's theory. To develop the discussion, I first understand Jacques Lacan's theory of desire. Each characteristic was organized by dividing the three areas of desire that Lacan emphasized: the imaginary world, the symbolic world, and the real world. Based on this, the desire acting on Alma's unconscious mind was analyzed. The analysis was focused on the texts of the “Summer and Smoke” play, and Alma's words and actions were closely examined in the scene where the desire for each stage was revealed. As a result, it was possible to understand how Alma's desire entered the real world through the imaginary and symbolic worlds, and how the object of desire was changing accordingly. Thus, it was confirmed that words and actions that contradict the super-objective of the character in the work can be explained on the basis of a psychoanalytically approached desire. Although this character analysis does not make a very different interpretation of Alma, it could suggest the possibility of being applied as a tool to create complex characters reflecting complex modern society in more depth.

Abstract:Using Lacanian theory, Macario Giraldo pays attention to two dialogues: the dialogue IN the group (the conscious and preconscious ego narrative) versus the dialogue OF the group (the dialogue of the unconscious). Lacan's three registers of Real, Imaginary, and Symbolic are presented as background. The therapist's listening is guided by the central concept of desire and how to access it through the uses of language in the group. Examples from the group vignette are selected as manifestation of the two dialogues.

Abstract:Lacan's effect in America was dramatic but limited following his 1975 visit. His polemic with ego psychology in Écrits radically changed the way literary critics, notably feminist critics, thought about psychoanalysis, while in those same years-the 1970s and 1980s-American psychoanalysts, taken up with their own reactions to ego psychology, paid him little attention. Yet après coup, looking back at that period, Lacan can be counted among those who contributed importantly to a major shift in our conception of psychoanalytic process: our contemporary sense of acts of reading-including clinical listening-as acts in themselves, rather than as steps toward the interpretive determination of hidden meaning. In acts of reading inspired by Lacan, feminist critics helped free Freud's theory of disavowal from its origins in the male anxieties of the castration complex. Speaking as the disavowed "others" of psychoanalysis, Lacan's feminist readers also went beyond him in moving psychoanalysis toward acknowledgment of questions of social and historical reality, including its own. Regarding this evolution, it can be speculated that hidden behind the bitterness of the split in the 1950s and 1960s between Lacan and the once European, now American ego psychologists can be found an unconscious agreement. On both sides of the Atlantic, psychoanalysis had had its reasons, if different reasons, to disavow for years the ways it was implicated in the unspeakable trauma of recent European history.

Abstract:The text approaches two fundamental aspects of the adolescent crisis from the works of Sigmund Freud and Gustave Flaubert: their encounter with their object in desire, pleasure, sexual act, and the causes the detachment from parental authority and their effects. A study was made on the work of Flaubert on the causes of the enigma, which the author suggests in his Memoirs of a Madman: Am I another or myself? That feeling of strangeness the adolescent experiences on waking up in a dream, with a new feeling and desire of the love object. The ardent desire of being like a grown-up, and the motions toward their parents, influence decisions for which the young are not prepared, given their cradled education and the unsatisfactory answers to their infant sexual investigation. Lacan notes that the sexual relationship does not exist. Freud rates love as being narcissistic and childish. The first amorous manifestations, given the fantasy that cloaks them always remain the same, as explained by Flaubert and Lacan's comment to Wedekind, in The Spring Awakening. In childhood the enjoyment of body is not involved. For this reason, it is so simple, the adolescent would be a representation of the division of the subject, the cut made by their unconscious, which their body, in certain cases, will carry the marks. They will be surprised, puzzled by this new desire that produces their unconscious to step toward the sexual act.

Abstract:In this chapter, the author shows in an exemplary sophism of intersubjective time, the function of haste in logical precipitation, where truth finds its unsupersedable condit. He tackles the function of speech in analysis from its least rewarding angle, that of ‘empty’ speech, where the subject seems to be talking in vain about someone who, even if he were his spitting image, can never become one with the assumption of his desire. The theme was suggested to the author as the basis of the customary theoretical report for the annual meeting of the society, which, at that time, represented psychoanalysis in France. The discourse takes on a phallic-urethral, anal-erotic, or even an oral-sadistic function. There is a language-barrier opposed to speech, and the precautions against verbalism that are a theme of the discourse of the ‘normal’ man in our culture merely serve to reinforce its thickness.
