Abstract:The authors examine the question: “Does the evidence … support an assertion that a teacher can get ‘good’ ratings simply by assigning ‘good’ grades, or creating the expectance that he will do so?” They find that students are genuinely interested in helping teachers to improve their performance, and that the students' perception of effective teaching is positively related to “imaginative intelligence,” emotional stability, agreeableness, and enthusiasm. It is concluded that student ratings can provide valid and reliable information on instructional quality.

Abstract:Researchers have long tried to relate personality types to teaching and learning styles. It is believed that the psychological theory behind the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) can help university teachers to accept variety in teaching and learning approaches. This paper makes some assertions about the personality traits of academics and students. These traits can create harmony or discord for individual students, depending on whether their approach to learning matches the teachers approach to teaching. Although some teaching strategies can be useful for a whole class, differences among students make it necessary to diversify those strategies.

Abstract:This study determined the relations between generative teaching and student teachers' social maturity, receptivity to criticism and ability to incorporate criticism. Additionally, the “more effective” and ‘less effective” student teachers were compared with respect to these personality characteristics and generative teaching. The subjects were 97 elementary student teachers. At the end of student teaching assignment, the subjects' generative teaching as well as their personality characteristics were evaluated. Results showed that personality characteristics accounted for 56.8% and 56.6% of the variance in the preactive and interactive generative teaching. The “more effective” student teachers were significantly more generative, more mature, and more receptive; they also incorporated criticism more often than the “less effective” ones.

Abstract:<span>For several decades research into the student evaluation of teaching has periodically found an association between how well students like an instructor and the evaluations. The association has been largely ignored, being seen as an indicator of bias, or as a statistical or procedural artifact. However, these interpretations may be obscuring a more fundamental hypothesis. It is possible that the evaluations, instead of being a measure of 'good' or 'effective' teaching as commonly conceived, are actually a measure of a student-perceived construct similar to likability. This study looks directly at the influence of likability on the student evaluation of teaching. Knowing nothing about an instructor or how a class was taught, students' perception of likability accounted for two-thirds of the total variance of the evaluations. The student evaluation of teaching could be replaced with a single likability measure, with little loss of predictability.</span>

A Meta‐Analytic Review of Personality and Teacher–Student Relationships

Abstract:Objective This meta‐analysis provides the first comprehensive synthesis of associations between student and teacher personality traits and the quality of teacher–student relationships. Method Fifty‐five studies met the eligibility criteria, contributing a total of 238 effect sizes. We used multivariate meta‐analysis with robust variance estimation (RVE) to model the dependency of effect sizes. Results Student prosocial behavior (ρ = 0.59) and proactive personality (ρ = 0.48) were the strongest predictors of positive teacher–student relationship quality. All Big Five traits of students, except neuroticism, showed significant positive associations, with all correlations exceeding 0.4 when holding constant with all other moderators. Teacher agreeableness (ρ = 0.31) and conscientiousness (ρ = 0.29) yielded modest associations. Students with less emotional stability or aggressive behaviors were more likely to experience negative teacher–student relationships, such as conflict and dependency. Conclusion Our findings highlight the critical role of student personality in explaining the quality of teacher–student interactions. Multiple traits appear equally important, as indicated by comparable effect sizes. The literature is relatively limited when it comes to teacher personality. We were unable to examine teacher traits in relation to teacher–student conflict and dependency, but, overall, agreeable and conscientious teacher behaviors appeared to be important for favorable interactions, whereas teacher neuroticism may undermine the quality of such interactions.

Abstract:Guided by rhetorical/relational goal theory, the purpose of this study was to examine whether students’ impressions of their instructors’ credibility, attraction, and homophily are influenced by four specific rhetorical and relational communication behaviors that instructors use when communicating with their students in the classroom. Participants were 193 undergraduate students enrolled in a variety of introductory communication courses at a large mid-Atlantic university. Using a series of multiple regression analyses, it was found that (a) clarity emerged as the sole indicator of instructor competence, trustworthiness, and task attraction; (b) clarity and confirmation emerged as indicators of goodwill; and (c) humor and confirmation emerged as indicators of social attraction and attitude homophily.

Abstract:This paper examines the effects of course characteristics on student ratings of university teaching. The multivariate effects of various course characteristics on student ratings of university teachers were examined by a 5×4×3×2×2 multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with academic discipline, class size, level of course, type of course, and mode of study as independent variables and a set of six composite student ratings as the dependent variable. Data were obtained from a university in Hong Kong and consisted of 4996 course average ratings collected from 25 departments over two academic years. Significant differences were found in course average student ratings across academic disciplines, class size groups, course levels, types of course, and modes of study. The effect sizes of the largest differences between sub‐groups within each of the factors were also estimated. Academic discipline differences and class size were found to have the largest effect on student ratings, with effect sizes of 0.43–0.86 and 0.55–1.01 respectively. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract:This research investigated whether college students with certain personality types (as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) performed better in an introductory programming class than students with the opposite personality types. A pilot study of 24 students and a follow-up study of 114 college students taking an introductory programming class indicated that sensing students performed better on programming assignments than intuitive students, and that judging students achieved higher programming averages than perceptive students. Additionally, it was found that personality type influenced achievement in programming performance, but did not influence achievement on exams or overall average.

Abstract:Personality has been demonstrated as influential factors in technology-enhanced learning. The collection of personality is always a challenge. Human efforts are usually required in the user surveys which is the most common and popular way to collect the personality traits. Predicting personality traits, as a result, becomes one of the research directions. Some researchers consider these personality traits as labels in the classifications, while some others consider them as numeric variables in the regressions. In this paper, we made our attempt to predict the students’ personality traits from their learning behaviors on the Blackboard system. More specifically, we tried both the classification and regression models, and evaluate them based on the same standards. Our initial experimental results discover the insights about these predictive models.

Abstract:When the college student satisfaction survey is considered in the promotion and recognition of instructors, a usual complaint is related to the impact that biased ratings have on the arithmetic mean (used as a measure of teaching effectiveness). This is especially significant when the number of students responding to the survey is small. In this work a new methodology, considering student to student perceptions, is presented. Two different estimators of student rating credibility, based on centrality properties of the student social network, are proposed. This method is established on the idea that in the case of on-site higher education, students often know which others are competent in rating the teaching and learning process.

Abstract:The current review aims to demonstrate that findings from personality theories can help educational psychology craft a more thorough explanation of the role of teacher personality in the educational process. This topic seemed to have been inadvertently omitted. The following five groups of studies in psychology and related fields (classified based on their research objectives) are critically analysed: studies of teacher typologies, studies of teachers’ desirable and undesirable features, studies of teachers’ professional behaviours and their influence on students, studies of teachers’ professional identity and studies of teacher personality within the framework of personality theories (particularly within the Five-Factor Model of personality). Arguments in support of personality theories, and methodological dilemmas in assessing teachers’ personalities involving data collection and research design are also discussed. The article suggests that those findings on teachers’ personalities acquired in the context of personality theories might currently serve as the best starting point for a more comprehensive psychological theory of teacher personality in educational psychology – particularly when considered alongside current knowledge regarding small social group management and aspects of learning and development theories. Thus, the current review might serve as the basis for a separate field within school psychology focused on the psychological aspects of the pedagogical profession.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Although the validity of students' ratings of instruction has been documented, several student and course characteristics may be related to the ratings students give their instructors.AIMS: The purpose of this study was to examine student ratings obtained from the Universal Student Ratings of Instruction (USRI) instrument. These responses were compared to various student characteristics. Also, teaching characteristics that were most closely associated with the ratings were determined.METHOD: A total of 1738 USRI forms were completed by graduate students enrolled in medical science courses from 1999 to 2006 in the Faculty of Medicine at a Canadian university.RESULTS: Between group comparisons showed that negative student perceptions about the course (i.e., did not have the freedom to select), perceiving the course workload as high, and low grade expectations held were related to negative student ratings of overall quality of instruction. In terms of the student and teaching characteristics, organization of course material and perceptions of whether students felt they learned a lot in the course were most closely related to global ratings of instructional quality.CONCLUSION: Implications for teaching focus on improving the organization and delivery of course content that meets the learning objectives of graduate students in medical sciences.

MBTI Personality Types of the University Students in an Area

Abstract:This study is a descriptive research study conducted to provide useful preliminary data that is helpful for self-initiated learning through a preference trend-based learning method by analyzing the personality types of university students in an area. In this study, the self-administered MBTI form M ® test was performed on 695 students of 10 departments at K University, from September 18 to 22, 2017, using an automatic scoring system. Collected data was analyzed with descriptive statistics and Chi-square test, using the SPSS Win 22.0 Program, to sort the target students into one of 16 different personality types and examine psychological function and temperament by their personality. Differences in personality type preference by gender were as follows: for judging function, the male students had a strong preference for the T type (thinking type) while the female students showed a high preference for the F type (feeling type), and in the case of the pattern of behavior and lifestyle, the male students and the female students had a strong preference for the P type (perceiving type) and the J type (judging type), respectively. In addition, there were significant differences for each major and each department in personality type, psychological function and temperament. In conclusion, personality type was found to vary by gender, major and department. It would be necessary to develop a manual for learning methods reflecting individual preference.

Abstract:Online personality tests have emerged due to evolving technological advances, with their popularity mainly rooted due to their ease of use and quick results. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, one of the most popular, has become the new approach to assessing personality. The user will be categorized as one of the 16 personalities described in this test, each with their own set of strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. On the other hand, academic performance is the degree of knowledge of a student and is impacted by various circumstances. Several studies have investigated the relationship between personality types and academic-related events. This became the catalyst for why the researchers aim to achieve a correlative study, utilizing the currently popular MBTI in particular. The researchers seek to determine if this test can be used for anything more than psychological feedback. Notably, the researchers’ objectives not only define the concepts of various personalities present on the test and academic performance but also determine whether there is a connection between these personality types and the student’s academic performance. To conclude, the researchers employed both physical and online surveys. These comprised the adopted 16-personality type questionnaire by Crystal Knows to determine their personality type and a form that sought the first semester grades of core and applied subjects of 294 grade 12 students, the calculated number of participants needed for the study. Following a thorough data collection procedure, the researchers arrived at the following conclusions: 1) There are a variety of MBTI types present among grade 12 students, but they can be classified into four (4) groups: Analysts, Diplomats, Sentinels, and Explorers. 2) The student’s academic performance in school falls into three (3) categories: Category A (90-100), Category A (90-100), Category B (85-89), and Category C (75-84). 3) There are academic groups that excelled, particularly the Analysts and Diplomats group. Lastly, 4) No substantial correlation exists between personality types and students’ academic performance. The study’s implications can help young individuals expand their knowledge through personality tests.

Abstract:In the field of second language teaching and learning, researchers have been focusing on the importance of affective analysis, particularly regarding learners' personality types. Recent studies have shown that personality type can have a significant impact on a student's ability to learn a new language. However, little research has been conducted on whether or not personality type has any correlation with the acquisition of second language vocabulary. To delve further into this topic, this study was conducted using questionnaire data from college students. Whether it belongs to any personality trait in the E/I dimension N/S dimension F/T dimension or the J/P dimension, this personality trait is strongly related to the effect of second language vocabulary acquisition. So, personality stereotypes in language learner ability assessment must be broken. Teachers’ personalized teaching capabilities should be improved. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of considering learners' personality types when designing second language teaching and learning strategies. By understanding how personality type affects language acquisition, teachers can better tailor their approach to meet the individual needs of each student.

Abstract:Person-centered analyses were used to identify relationship profiles based on seventh graders’ perceptions of relationships with three of their teachers (homeroom teacher, teacher of the easiest subject, teacher of the hardest subject). Furthermore, we investigated whether students’ characteristics (gender and academic track) could explain relationship profile membership and how these relationship profiles were associated with students’ school engagement. Students ( N = 899, 47.8% girls) reported about their relationships (closeness, conflict) with their teachers. Students and their homeroom teachers reported about students’ behavioral and emotional engagement. Four relationship profiles were found: a no risk profile (high closeness, low conflict with all three teachers), two single risk profiles (low closeness, high conflict with only one teacher), and one multiple risk profile (high conflict with all three teachers). Furthermore, boys were underrepresented in the no risk profile. Finally, students in the no risk profile tended to be more behaviorally and emotional engaged.

Abstract:The relevance of the topic under study is conditioned by the dissatisfaction of both teachers and students with their relations with each other, which primarily blocks the formation of subjectness, student activity, including that in educational activities. The purpose of the study presented in the article is to study the possibility of predetermining constructiveness of interaction between teachers and students through personal and communicative qualities of teachers. Presumably, the constructive characteristics of teachers’ self-attitude can predetermine formation of professionally significant communicative characteristics: accepting personality of others as they are (lack of personality evaluation); building trust with students; creation the feeling of confidence in one’s capabilities in another person; teacher’s ability to stop him/herself from putting pressure on another person and rejection of manipulation, which, in turn, acts as a condition that predetermines the subject-subject interaction with students. The study was carried out on a sample of teachers (n = 72) of the middle and high school level of a Moscow general education school and students in grades 7–11 (n = 402) of the same school using the author’s methodology called “Features of self-attitude”, which includes the following scales: “faith in oneself” – allowing to study the constructiveness/destructiveness of self-attitude; mindfulness; autosympathy; self-esteem; self-management, and the technique called “Communicative qualities of teachers.” The results of correlation analysis using the Spearman’s coefficient confirmed the hypotheses. The obtained empirical data on the influence of the emotional component of the teacher’s self-attitude on the type of interaction with students allows us to state that there is a need for introduction of psychological support into the practice of supporting teachers’ activities. Traditionally, psychological service has been more focused on students and their parents, while personality of a teacher, who is definitely one of the most important subjects in education, does not get any proper psychological support.

Abstract:Because of the difficulty of evaluating uneven performance among group members, many researchers suggest incorporating peer evaluations in a grading system that permits an instructor to evaluate and grade individual performance more equitably within a group. In this study, the authors employ expectancy theory to assess key factors that may motivate students to participate in the peer evaluation process of group projects. Results show that students generally thought that the most attractive outcome of peer evaluation is its use in the determination of peers' grades. The second most attractive outcome is its use for reduction of conflict and uneven workload distribution among group members. The authors provide implications for instructors planning to use peer evaluation in group projects.

Abstract:Student evaluation of teaching (SET) is ubiquitous in higher education as a metric for assessing teachers, gaining student feedback, and informing faculty personnel decisions. It is thus imperative to examine the dimensions along which a teacher is judged. This study tested the application of the universal dimensions of social judgment (i.e., warmth and competence) in SET. A total of 108 psychology undergraduates ( M age = 23.63, SD age = 3.14) in Singapore rated a fictitious teacher (i.e., either relationship-oriented or task-oriented) based on their interactions over a programmed online chat. Participants responded to the social judgment measures of warmth and competence and rated their academic motivation. Results indicated a higher SET rating for a relationship-oriented than a task-oriented teacher. Further, student academic motivation mediated the link between teaching style and judgment of competence. The findings extend the supremacy of warmth in the context of SET, thus supporting the application of social cognition literature to educational research. In addition, the findings suggest that fostering a match in task goals between a teacher and student improves ratings of teacher competence.
