Abstract:Significance Oxygen and hydrogen isotope distributions in rain and snow are chemical tracers that carry information about sources and history of precipitation. This information is useful for many applications in environmental and biological sciences, but measured values are often not available for a desired time and location. We developed a user-friendly model using machine learning that generates monthly time series of precipitation isotope values using a large compilation of readily available and routinely updated climate data. This allows monthly precipitation isotope records to be produced that span the entire duration of the available instrumental climate record. In addition to being easy to use and update, the prediction errors from direct comparison with measurements are substantially better than those of other available models.
