Abstract:Tritium,as a natural environmental isotope,can be broadly applied in hydrogeology.The application of tritium is greatly limited by the scarcity observations.We have developed,selecting the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) tritium data set in area from 50 S to 70 N,a modified global model for predicting the annual mean tritium concentration in atmospheric precipitation by using factor analysis method.Three random representative stations have been chosen to verify the model with direct calibrated parameters,and one station for the model with interpolated parameters.Moreover,Nanjing station has been taken as an example to explain the application of the global model.The application of factor analysis method for recovering the tritium concentration in rain has its own obvious characteristics,such as its definite meaning in physics,extensive range in application,simple process in operation,few variables in influence and well modeling the shape and peak value of the history curve.Through the analysis of the results,it shows the tritium contents in precipitation restored by the global model fit the observations very well.It also indicates that the new model is not only appropriate for the global but also improves the accuracy to some extent.In short,it provides a new idea to reconstruct the tritium concentration in atmospheric precipitation in scarcity even no data area between 1960 and 2005.However,problems of application have also been proposed,discussed and put to solutions.

Abstract:A modified global model for predicting the tritium concentration in precipitation has been developed using the dataset of International Atomic Energy Agency/the World Meteorological Organization (IAEA/WMO) over the period from 1960 to 2005. The tritium concentration in precipitation and its history can be estimated at any location using the model. The modified global model of tritium in precipitation (MGMTP) here presented has higher accuracy than the global model of tritium in precipitation (GMTP) developed by Doney et al. ( 1992 ). The new model is not only more appropriate for a particular station but also applicable for the un‐normalized observations directly. Another advantage of MGMTP is that it can estimate a longer history (from 1960 to 2005) of tritium content in precipitation than GMTP (from 1960 to 1986). The seasonal cycle of tritium in precipitation has also been modelled in the form of a simple cosine function with five parameters. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Tritium as hydrological tracer in Mediterranean precipitation events

Abstract:Abstract. Climate models are in need of improved constraints for water vapor transport in the atmosphere and tritium can serve as a powerful tracer in the hydrological cycle. Although general principles of tritium distribution and transfer processes within and between the various hydrological compartments are known, variation on short timescales and aspects of altitude dependence are still under debate. To address questions for tritium sources, sinks and transfer processes, sampling of individual precipitation events in Corte on the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea was performed between April 2017 and April 2018. Tritium concentrations of 46 event samples were compared to their moisture origin and corresponding air mass history. Air mass back-trajectories were generated from the novel high-resolution ERA 5 data set of the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). Geographical source regions of similar tritium concentrations were predefined using generally known tritium distribution patterns, such as a continental effect, and from data records derived at long-term measurement stations of tritium in precipitation across the working area. Our model-derived source region tritium concentrations agreed well with annual mean station values. Moisture that originated from continental Europe and the Atlantic Ocean was most distinct regarding tritium concentrations with values up to 8.8 TU and near 0 TU, respectively. Seasonality of tritium values ranged from 1.6 TU in January to 10.1 TU in May and exhibited well-known elevated concentrations in spring and early summer due to increased stratosphere-troposphere exchange. However, this pattern was interrupted by extreme events. The average altitude of trajectories correlated with tritium concentrations in precipitation, especially in spring and early summer and if outlier values of extreme tritium concentrations were excluded. However, in combination with the trajectory information, these outlier values proved to be valuable for the understanding of tritium movement in the atmosphere. Our work shows how event-based tritium research can advance the understanding of its distribution in the atmosphere.
The global distribution of natural tritium in precipitation simulated with an Atmospheric General Circulation Model and comparison with observations

Abstract:The description of the hydrological cycle in Atmospheric General Circulation Models (GCMs) can be validated using water isotopes as tracers. Many GCMs now simulate the movement of the stable isotopes of water, but here we present the first GCM simulations modelling the content of natural tritium in water. These simulations were obtained using a version of the LMDZ General Circulation Model enhanced by water isotopes diagnostics, LMDZ-iso. To avoid tritium generated by nuclear bomb testing, the simulations have been evaluated against a compilation of published tritium datasets dating from before 1950, or measured recently. LMDZ-iso correctly captures the observed tritium enrichment in precipitation as oceanic air moves inland (the so-called continental effect) and the observed north-south variations due to the latitudinal dependency of the cosmogenic tritium production rate. The seasonal variability, linked to the stratospheric intrusions of air masses with higher tritium content into the troposphere, is correctly reproduced for Antarctica with a maximum in winter. LMDZ-iso reproduces the spring maximum of tritium over Europe, but underestimates it and produces a peak in winter that is not apparent in the data. This implementation of tritium in a GCM promises to provide a better constraint on: (1) the intrusions and transport of air masses from the stratosphere and (2) the dynamics of the modelled water cycle. The method complements the existing approach of using stable water isotopes.

Abstract:Tritium present in deep vadose zones is a useful tracer for estimating groundwater recharge, but its full utility is constrained by not knowing where and for how long the tritium tracing method remains applicable. We obtained 44 tritium profiles from 17 globally distributed sites with vadose zone thicknesses of 12–624 m and used transport models to estimate the number of years that tritium may still be useful. Results show that the method may still be usable for 26 of 44 soil profiles surveyed, mainly in China, Australia, the United States, South Africa, and Senegal, with a remaining useful period of between 6 and 83 years. We also developed a statistical model that uses outputs from a hydrological model to predict the applicability of the tritium tracing method. Global implementation of the statistical model showed that the method remains usable at 20% of Earth's land mass (excluding Antarctica and Greenland) over the next few decades.

Abstract:Abstract Modeling tritium content in water presents a meaningful way to evaluate the representation of the water cycle in climate models as it traces fluxes within and between the reservoirs involved in the water cycle (stratosphere, troposphere, and ocean). In this study, we present the implementation of natural tritium in water in the atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) MIROC5‐iso and its simulation for the period 1979–2018. Owing to recently published tritium production calculations, we were able to investigate, for the first time, the influence of natural tritium production related to the 11‐yr solar cycle on tritium in precipitation. MIROC5‐iso correctly simulates continental, latitudinal, and altitude effects on tritium in precipitation. The seasonal tritium content peaks, linked to stratosphere‐troposphere exchanges, are accurately simulated in terms of timing, even though MIROC5‐iso underestimates the amplitude of the changes. Decadal tritium concentration variations in precipitation owing to the 11‐yr solar cycle are well simulated in MIROC5‐iso, in agreement with the observations at Vostok in Antarctica for example, Finally, our simulations revealed that the internal climate variability plays an important role in tritium in polar precipitation. Owing to its influence on the south polar vortex, the Southern Annular Mode enhances the effect of the production component on tritium in East Antarctic precipitation. In Greenland, we found an east‐west contrast in the detection of the 11‐yr solar cycle in tritium in precipitation owing to the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation on humidity conditions.

Characteristics of tritium distribution in precipitation in Nanjing

Abstract:We have improved,using the World Meteorological Organization/International Atomic Energy Agency (WMO/IAEA) tritium dataset,a global model function for predicting the annual mean concentration of decay-corrected bomb tritium in precipitation over the time period 1960-2005. The model consists of two reference time histories or factors,calculated from a factor analysis of the zonally averaged global data set,and global maps of the two spatial coefficient values with the factors. By combining the reference curves with the appropriate coefficent values taken from these maps,an estimate of the tritium time history for the Nanjing region can be produced.In this paper diagnostic analysis of the samples of precipitation amount was measured in Nanjing from 1988 to 1990 and from 2005 to 2007. From 1988 to 1990,the samples of precipitation are monitored by WMO/IAEA. And from 2005 to 2007,the samples of precipitation are monitored by us. From 2005 to 2007,there are 19 samples. It is because no rain in some months. The following useful information about the distribution characteristics of the atmospheric precipitation tritium of Nanjing and the time-space variation law of the concentration field of the atmospheric precipitation. The results show that:3H (tritium),which was from atmospheric nuclear weapon tests,has been reduced to natural value through natural attenuation and precipitation. Rainfall amount has a significant effect on 3H content in precipitation in monsoon seasons. In the other seasons,the relationship between 3H content and rainfall amount is not clear. We could also find that 3H content changes with season by comparing the each month content in precipitation in one year. The reasons of these phenomena are discussed in this paper. There are two reasons why rainfall amount sometimes has no obvious effect on 3H content. The first reason is moisture that affects rainfall amount is from different sources. When kinds of moisture take different paths to reach Nanjing at same time,the relationship between 3H content in precipitation and rainfall amount is very confused. The other reason is data shortage in winter. Seasonal effect is composed by many factors. The percolation effect in tropopause leads to the peak value of 3H content in spring. The rainfall amount effect leads to the valley value of 3H content in summer. Temperature is another important factor. Local evaporation changes with temperature. The evaporation changes lead to the changes of the precipitation-evaporation balance in different seasons. These variations have a significant impact on isotopic fractionation.In this paper,we summarized comprehensively the progress and result for tritium in Nanjing precipitation and analyzed systematically regularity of space-time distribution on the basis of monitoring information from the concentration of tritium in Nanjing precipitation. This research provided the base data and theoretical basis for environmental isotope that is applied to oceanography,hydrometeorology,climatology and hydrogeology.

Abstract:Tritium is a powerful tool for hydrograph separation. Significant differences in tritium contents exist between precipitation and groundwater. 3H enters the hydrologic cycle after oxidizing in the 3H1HO molecule and it constitutes a very useful tracer for hydrological studies. One of these applications is streamflow component separation, which provides useful information to understand the hydrological cycle. This application is based on the fact that the contents in precipitation (runoff) tend to be markedly higher than those in groundwater (baseflow) because of decreasing activity in the last as a consequence of radioactive decay. The main objective of this paper is to test 3H for hydrograph separation in sub‐tropical South America, where it is favoured by high values in precipitation. The catchment of the Quequén Grande River, in Argentina, was selected. Total flow in surface water is a mixing between the baseflow and the event flow portion; the separation was done in three sections of the drainage network, and the proportion of baseflow were 36%, 88% and 47%.

Abstract:This article discusses tritium concentrations in monthly precipitation in part of the Difficult-to-Return Zone in Namie Town during 2012–2021. The tritium concentrations, which were measured with a low background liquid scintillation counter after carrying out an enrichment procedure, fluctuated seasonally from 0.10 ± 0.02 to 0.85 ± 0.02 Bq L −1 . This range of concentrations is concluded to not be unusual based on comparisons with the concentrations at other sites and estimates of the past range of the concentrations. Moreover, no significant variations in observed tritium concentrations were observed due to decommissioning work at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. These results contribute to understanding the background level of tritium concentration in precipitation before the oceanic discharge of treated water from the Fukushima plant. In addition, this article evaluates the amount of tritium supplied to the ocean by terrestrial rainwater pouring into the Pacific Ocean via Ukedo River, which flows through Namie Town; this information will contribute to the discussion on the impact of the oceanic discharge of treated water.

Abstract:Tritium (3H) is one of the most critical nuclides for environmental monitoring, yet it is challenging to measure. Its high natural mobility and its potential to enter the human body through the food chain underscore the importance of not overlooking the radiation safety risks associated with tritium. The need for the online measurement of tritium at low concentrations is becoming increasingly apparent. This review examines the two principal stages of current measurement methodologies: sample preparation and radiation signal detection. It provides a summary of the tritium sample preparation and detection techniques, highlighting advances in the research with potential applications in online monitoring. The review concludes with an analysis of the issues inherent in the current techniques and offers perspectives on possible technological enhancements and future trajectories for the development of online monitoring systems for trace tritium levels.

Abstract:Anthropogenic release of tritium from nuclear facilities is expected to increase significantly in the coming decades, which may cause radiation exposure to humans through the contamination of water and food chains. It is necessary and urgent to acquire detailed information about tritium in various environments for studying its behavior and assessing the potential radiation risk. In the atmosphere, although the passive sampling technique provides a low-cost and convenient way to characterize the dynamics of tritiated water vapor (HTO), a single, simple sampler configuration makes it difficult to collect sufficient and representative samples within the expected period from different environments. In this study, we systematically studied the impacts of sampler configurations on sampling performance and proposed a modifiable sampler design by scaling sampler geometry and adjusting absorbent to achieve different monitoring demands. The samplers were subsequently deployed at five sites in China and Germany for the field calibration and the measured results exhibited a good agreement between the adsorption process obtained in sites corrected with diffusion coefficient and the one calibrated in Shanghai. This suggests the feasibility of predicting sampling performance in the field based on known data. Finally, we developed a strategy for sampler modification and selection in different environments and demonstrated that using easily obtainable environmental data, our sampler can be optimized for any area without any time-consuming preliminary experiments. This work provides a scientific basis for establishing high-resolution atmospheric HTO database and expands the conventional empirical sampler design paradigm by demonstrating the feasibility of using quantitative indices for sampler performance customization.

Levels and Behavior of Environmental Tritium in East Asia

Abstract:For a more systematic understanding of the levels of environmental tritium and its behavior in East Asia, a database on environmental tritium was established based on the literature published in the past 30 years.Subsequently, the levels and behavior of the environmental tritium were further studied by statistical analyses. The results indicate that the distribution of environmental tritium is inhomogeneous and complex. In areas without nuclear facilities, the level of environmental tritium has decreased to its background level, even though a certain number of atmospheric nuclear tests were performed before 1980. In general, the level of atmospheric tritium was marginally higher than the levels in precipitation and surface water; the levels in shallow groundwater and seawater were considerably lower. Furthermore, the levels of tritium in the atmosphere, precipitation, and inland surface water were strongly correlated with latitude and distance from the coastline. In soil and living organisms, the level of tissue-free water tritium(TFWT) was comparable to the tritium levels in local rainfall, whereas the persistence of organically bound tritium(OBT) in the majority of organisms resulted in an OBT/TFWT ratio greater than one. Conversely, extremely high levels of environmental tritium were observed near certain nuclear power plants and the Fukushima accident sites. These results highlight the requirement to know the tritium baseline level and its behavior in the environment beforehand to better assess the impact of tritium discharge. Further investigations of environmental tritium in East Asia using more efficient and adequate monitoring methods are also required.

Abstract:Environmental isotopes are essential in hydrogeological studies, thanks to their contribution to the understanding of aquifers dynamics, vulnerability, water resources assessment, and management issues. The environmental isotopic approach plays a vital role in tracing the hydrological cycle and identifying various sources of contamination in the environment and gives independent information concerning what can be determined by a traditional hydrogeological study. Even in the framework of COP-26, isotopes have been indicated as fingerprints of climate change and therefore suitable for the evaluation of water balance and assessment of processes involved therein; in pollution studies they are used as fundamental support of traditional geochemical measures. Tritium, in particular, has been used since the 1960s to identify potential leaks in the containment walls of waste disposal sites, since its presence in the leachate (at very high levels in some cases) depends on the incorrect waste disposal of some peculiar items. Its use as a tracer of pollution by landfills is highlighted and emphasized by the very low concentrations of tritium in the natural environment. By comparing tritium content of leachate to that of water downflow from the waste disposal site, it is therefore possible to establish with a good success rate whether leachate have migrated or not out of the landfill, in the surrounding environment. An additional potential of tritium is to give a prompt indication of pollution risk in the environment indicating leaching even before the chemical indicator of pollution can be detected. This article wants to provide a contribution to the scientific community, collecting all the existing research in this field and providing data and benchmarks about this method, in particular stressing the role of tritium as an indicator of leachate transfer out of waste disposal sites.
Source Term Analysis of Tritium in HTR-10

Abstract:The Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) is one of the six proposed Generation IV reactor concepts. The HTR-10, a 10 MW high temperature gas-cooled reactor was a helium cooled, graphite-moderated, and thermal neutron spectrum reactor. Since tritium (H-3) has an effect on the environment and public radiation dose, it has received more and more attention in the environmental impact assessment of nuclear facilities. Recently, several experiments on source terms in HTR-10 have been run, of which preliminary measurements indicated H-3 was an important nuclide in the primary loop of HTR-10. The production mechanism, distribution characteristic, reduction route, and release type of total H-3 in HTR-10 were analyzed and discussed in this technical note. A theoretical model was established to calculate the total activity of H-3 in the reactor core and activity concentration of H-3 in the primary loop of HTR-10. This model indicated that the majority of total H-3 was produced by ternary fission reactions and H-3 in the primary helium was mainly generated from activation reactions of impurities in the reactor core. The research results can provide useful information for the experimental measurement of H-3 in HTR-10, and promote the study of H-3 in high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs).

Adequacy of TRMM Satellite Rainfall Data in Driving the SWAT Modeling of Tiaoxi Catchment (taihu Lake Basin, China)

Abstract:Spatial rainfall data is an essential input to Distributed Hydrological Models (DHM), and a significant contributor to hydrological model uncertainty. Model uncertainty is higher when rain gauges are sparse, as is often the case in practice. Currently, satellite-based precipitation products increasingly provide an alternative means to ground-based rainfall estimates, in which case a rigorous product assessment is required before implementation. Accordingly, the twofold objective of this work paper was the real-world assessment of both (a) the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rainfall product using gauge data, and (b) the TRMM product's role in forcing data for hydrologic simulations in the area of the Tiaoxi catchment (Taihu lake basin, China). The TRMM rainfall products used in this study are the Version-7 real-time 3B42RT and the post-real-time 3B42. It was found that the TRMM rainfall data showed a superior performance at the monthly and annual scales, fitting well with surface observation-based frequency rainfall distributions. The Nash-Sutcliffe Coefficient of Efficiency (NSCE) and the relative bias ratio (BIAS) were used to evaluate hydrologic model performance. The satisfactory performance of the monthly runoff simulations in the Tiaoxi study supports the view that the implementation of real-time 3B42RT allows considerable room for improvement. At the same time, post-real-time 3B42 can be a valuable tool of hydrologic modeling, water balance analysis, and basin water resource management, especially in developing countries or at remote locations in which rainfall gauges are scarce. Abstract:The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Reactor accident generated a large data set of global radionuclide observations. Frequent observations of xenon, caesium and iodine radioisotopes provided an opportunity to examine the performance of inter-continental scale meteorological models, in particular, the important mechanisms of in-cloud scavenging, precipitation, and deposition. Previous studies investigated these phenomena over short range, but this is the first time a global, coordinated surveillance system and in particular, a non-scavenged noble gas data set was available for use in such a study. Since particle size distributions are very different at long range, the parametrization of the deposition is important for accurate atmospheric modelling. The accuracy of these models are crucial in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) context where discrimination of local and distant civilian sources from a potential nuclear test is a challenging problem. Beyond the CTBT context, accurate prediction of deposition is important for emergency and consequence management of nuclear emergencies, allowing a small set of data, combined with an appropriate model to represent a much larger domain, even up to continental scales. The modelling results for ground deposition and airborne activity of radiocaesium and radioiodine are presented and validated against the actual measurements.

Abstract:Abstract. After the nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s and 1960s, the atmospheric tritium levels have almost returned to natural levels (pre-1950 levels), which means that tritium is becoming more effective in determining transit times in hydrological systems. It has also been demonstrated that tritium is a non-reactive noble gas and in water is not subject to chemical reactions, absorption, or dissolution/precipitation processes, so it is conservative of the geochemical fingerprint of the source. In addition, it is used as an effective tracer of water contamination by landfill leachate, allowing to detect mixing percentages of the leachate up to levels not achievable with normal chemical analyses (less than 1 %). The purpose of the present work is to deepen the knowledge of the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the aquifers in the pedemontana area of the Venetian plain, and to formulate a conceptual framework of underground water circulation, aimed at understanding phenomena of contamination by toxic metals, harmful to human health. Tritium concentration analyses were performed on selected samples of groundwater collected in different wells in the south part of Treviso city to correlate the young age of the water recharge. The abundance of young waters, in fact, indicates a vulnerability of the aquifer to climate change with respect to possible contributions of surface waters, in particular to prolonged drought periods which could induce salinization dynamics.

Abstract:As a special and dominant radionuclide released from the nuclear industry, tritium is a "superstar" radionuclide receiving significant concerns from the scientific community, regulators and even the public. This characteristic gradually becomes more and more prominent along with the rapid development of fusion energy research in particular and operations of fission nuclear reactors as well. Various aspects of tritium studies including, but not limited to, the tritium resource, fusion tritium technology (such as extraction, separation and fueling), tritium management and discharge, tritium environmental behavior, radiation dose and health effects have been and are being conducted. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to detail the tritium production, inventory and discharge of nuclear facilities from the perspectives of both practices and regulatory requirements, (2) to illustrate tritium environmental behavior & modeling in both the terrestrial and aquatic systems, in which an airwater transfer behavior (deposition and evaporation) was specifically explained, (3) to identify and discuss the radiation dose to a person under normal and accidental tritium discharges, (4) to review the health effects and risks in relation to tritium exposure. The main contribution is to comprehensively recognize the anthropogenic tritium from its generation to the possible damage to human health. It is expected to be instrumental for the beginners in the related fields and attract more scholars' attention to the tritium safety issue when performing directly or related studies so as to ensure the safe operation of nuclear systems, in particular the future fusion energy system.

Abstract:Tritium is released to the environment by nuclear industries in various forms, mainly HTO. In impact studies leading to estimated doses for the population, atmospheric discharges are mainly taken into consideration because they generally lead to values higher than those related to liquid discharges. However, the tritium released in liquid environments can be transferred to the atmosphere by evaporation and then be transported to terrestrial ecosystems by wind. This study was carried out in France near a fuel reprocessing plant (RP) which discharges tritium into the western English Channel. We highlighted the influence of a mass of water enriched with tritium on the HTO levels in atmospheric water vapour downwind through 18 field campaigns. A hydrodynamic model able to simulate tritium activity in the water was coupled with an evaporation an atmospheric transport model. It allows to reconstitute variations in atmospheric tritium on the coast, depending on liquid discharges of tritium from the reprocessing plant. On this basis, when seawater containing 20–100 Bq.L −1 of tritium flows between 0 and 10 km off the coast, variations in atmospheric activity onshore can increase of 2–15 Bq.L −1 . Mean tritium quantities released by the sea into the atmosphere in the Western English Channel reached 130 TBq.y −1 over the 2017–2020 period. Emissions were estimated at 0.9–11.3 GBq km −2 .y −1 and depends principally on the distance from the liquid discharge point. If we compare the "marine" source term, in HTO form, with the direct source term for gaseous discharges, the marine source term is one order of magnitude greater for the marine region affected by liquid discharges. Finally, we estimate that approximately 1.1% of tritium stock discharged at sea (regulated and controlled) return to the atmosphere each year at the scale of the Western English Channel.

Abstract:Tritium (H-3) has been increasingly researched when assessing the environmental impact of nuclear reactors and other nuclear facilities because it is widely present in nuclear systems and can easily enter the environment. The first pebble-bed gas-cooled test reactor in China, the 10 MW high temperature gas-cooled test reactor (HTR-10), uses helium, graphite, and graphite spheres containing embedded tristructural-isotropic-coated particles as primary coolant, reflectors, and fuel elements, respectively. Several experiments that involved the H-3 source term in HTR-10 were performed, and they measured the H-3 specific activity and its distribution in the irradiated graphite spheres from the core, H-3 activity concentration in the primary helium, H-3 activity concentration during the regeneration of the molecular sieve adsorber in the helium purification system, and H-3 amount in the gaseous effluent discharge from the stack. The experimental data were summarized and compared with the theoretical predictions. The balance diagram of the H-3 source term in HTR-10 is introduced in this paper. Sensitivity analysis was performed to illustrate the effect of the He-3 abundance in the primary helium and Li content in the graphite reflectors on the H-3 activity concentration in the primary coolant of HTR-10. The interactions between graphite and different hydrogen isotopes (H-1, H-3, H-1(2), (HH)-H-1-H-3, and H-3(2)) were investigated using first-principles calculations and the diffusion theory. The results indicated that molecular H-3 tended to diffuse in graphite.
