These minerals are fundamental raw materials for electronic information technologies, emerging materials, batteries, energy infrastructure, aerospace, national defense, and various industries. They play an irreplaceable role in supporting economic development, industrial transformation, and national security.There is an urgent need to intensify and enhance the exploration of critical minerals to ensure a safe and reliable supply. Geophysical methods are crucial in the exploration of mineral resources. However, critical minerals differ significantly from bulk minerals in terms of physical properties, reserves, and occurrence. Traditional geophysical exploration methods encounter numerous challenges when applied to the prospecting of critical minerals.We extend our special thanks to Geophysics for providing this valuable opportunity. As the special section editors, we are privileged to have collectively organized this "Critical minerals in geophysics" special section.Geophysical experts have contributed their research results to this section, showcasing their work in the following areas: (1) geophysical methods for critical minerals exploration; (2) modeling and data processing; (3) integrated interpretation with geophysics, geology, and geochemistry; and (4) case studies. In this section, we have included seven articles.Xue et al. define the location and shape of mineralized dolomite using a multisource geophysical data fusion technique, resulting in comprehensive geophysical profiles in the Bayan Obo mining area. Polychronopoulou et al. introduce a passive seismic methodology based purely on earthquakes for mineral exploration. It was used to delineate the location of bauxite-bearing formations and reprocess legacy active seismic data. Zhu et al. present a study using ambient noise tomography to investigate the subsurface velocity structure of the Bayan Obo deposit, revealing intricate velocity variations and potential mineralization characteristics within the mining area, offering valuable insights into deep resource exploration potential, and a better understanding of tectonic events and ore-controlling structures. Zheng et al. apply a composited processing workflow to 2D seismic data collected at the Bayan Obo REE-Nb-Fe deposit in China. The obtained subsurface images provide important information to explore local geologic features and mineral endowment. Xue et al. develop a set of techniques for determining the most effective geophysical approach for exploring Cu-Ni-Co deposits in China. Hu et al. describe an efficient deep-learning-based approach designed to cooperatively invert airborne magnetic and gravity gradient data. A well-trained network provides more accurate initial models for individual inversions, where the structural similarity is imposed through the design of the training data set without predefining relationships between physical properties. Alexander Prikhodko et al. introduce an innovative update of the airborne geophysical method audio frequency magnetotellurics for exploring territories rich in critical minerals. By measuring variations in natural magnetic and electric fields, this approach expands resistivity detection and depth of investigation beyond traditional methods, offering a comprehensive understanding of complex geologic systems, including hydrothermal-magmatic structures containing critical minerals.Finally, we extend our special thanks to the editors for their invaluable assistance and express our gratitude to our four collaborating experts. We also appreciate the contributions of several authors. Abstract:Editor’s note: The Geology and Mining series, edited by Dan Wood and Jeffrey Hedenquist, is designed to introduce early-career professionals and students to a variety of topics in mineral exploration, development, and mining, in order to provide insight into the many ways in which geoscientists contribute to the mineral industry. Abstract For economic geologists, mineral exploration has a specific objective: the discovery of mineral concentrations that can be recovered economically to provide resources essential for society. This was achieved consistently until the first decade of the current century, but exploration since then has been wealth destructive. This outcome is a major issue for the mining industry unless reversed. We believe the technologies presently used to discover ore deposits will be as useful in making future discoveries as they were previously. However, we argue that a new approach is required in how exploration is conducted and in how these and emerging technologies are applied. The required changes in approach include improved business models for conducting exploration and acceptance that fewer deposits are likely to be discovered near the surface. We argue that discovery of deeper deposits will be facilitated if exploration teams (1) seek to identify subtle evidence of mineralized rock recognizable within 500 m of the surface, (2) conduct follow-up investigations with a clear understanding of the volumetric dimensions of the discovery target, and (3) drill boldly as a critical exploration tool. We propose that improving the way geoscientists think when exploring—being more predictive—is the immediate key to increasing the number of discoveries.

Abstract:Population growth and technological progress in the last 50 years have resulted in the global demand for mineral resources increasing by 400% since 1970, and it is further expected to almost double by 2050. This context forecasts a never-seen-before market for some specific mineral commodities, termed critical metals. The resource and supply flow of critical metals would be decisive for the economic well-being of economies in near future. Carbonatites are the most prospective host rocks for Rare Earth Elements (REEs), which constitute some of the most important critical elements. This special issue aims to contribute to the debate on understanding the genesis of carbonatites and their prospectivity for REEs (including exploration strategies), by presenting a wide variety of studies on carbonatites from around the globe.

Advances in ICP-MS technology and the application of multi-element geochemistry to exploration

Abstract:There have been several advances in inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) analytical technologies in the last decade. Collision/reaction cell ICP-MS and triple quadrupole ICP-MS techniques can produce lower detection limits for select elements that experience interferences with a standard quadrupole (e.g. Se and As). Triple quadrupole ICP-MS, in particular, can eliminate virtually all polyatomic or isobaric interferences for highly accurate measurements of some element isotopes systematics that are of great interest in mineral exploration, namely Pb/Pb. Laser ablation ICP-MS has become more popular as an effective analytical tool to measure mineral grain trace elements, which could assist in vectoring to mineralization or exploration drill targets. The ablation of a spot on a Li-borate fused glass disk paired with XRF analysis has also gained popularity as an alternative to total whole rock characterization packages that employ several separate digestions and analytical methods. While there have been several advancements in ICP-MS technologies in exploration geochemistry, they have not been widely accepted or implemented. This slow adaptation could be due to the extended recession in the mining industry between 2012 and 2017. It is also possible that standard ICP-MS data (i.e. no collision/reaction cell) is still fit for purpose. This stands in stark contrast to implementation of ICP-MS in the previous decade (1997–2007), which was transformational for the industry.Consideration of all elements from large multi-element ICP-MS analytical suites for mineral exploration can be an extremely powerful tool in the exploration toolkit. The discovery of the White Gold District, Yukon, is a prime example of how the utilization of soil geochemical data, when plotted spatially, can vector to gold mineralization. The presence of Au + As + Sb soil anomalies were key to delineating mineralization, especially when accompanied by publicly available geological, geographical and geophysical data. Additionally, elements and element ratios not typically considered in Au exploration, including Ni and U, were utilized to determine the lithological and structural controls on mineralization. The availability of multi-element ICP-MS data was also useful in the discovery of the Cascadero Copper Taron Caesium deposit. Ore-grade Cs was discovered only because Cs was included in the multi-element ICP-MS exploration geochemistry suite. Geothermal Resource Exploration in Magmatic Rock Areas Using a Comprehensive Geophysical Method

Abstract:Geothermal resources have significant development and usage potential. It is critical to conduct geological investigation of geothermal resources prior to mining, so as to deepen our knowledge and comprehension of geothermal resources. Ground water is heated by magmatic rocks and geothermal resources can be created in magmatic rock areas. However, their communication is weak, and the depth of burial is typically great. It is difficult for traditional geophysical methods, such as induced polarization method, to achieve useful exploration depths, and they have low accuracy. In this article, a comprehensive geophysical method, based on the controlled source audio-frequency magnetotelluric method (CSAMT) and transient electromagnetic method (TEM), is applied to geothermal exploration in a magmatic rock area. This method compensates for the shortcomings of a single method and achieves a good exploration effect, thereby providing a reliable geological foundation for further development and utilization of geothermal resources.
