Abstract:Background. The central regions of Vietnam are of strategic importance for the Republic, being, in fact, the gateway to the ASEAN countries. Investing in the exploration and evaluation of mineral resources, in particular ore minerals hidden at great depths, is a specific and necessary task for the country. Aim. To clarify the structural-tectonic scheme of the analysed area and to identify the main fault systems and zoning of the Central Vietnam area by the gravitational field based on classification algorithms. Materials and methods. The objectives were achieved by assessing the total gradient of the gravitational field, analysing the distribution of the field variance and the results of tracing the axes of the gravitational field anomaly. Interpretation processing of gravity data was carried out using the “COSCAD 3D” computer technology of statistical and spectral correlation data analysis. Results. The defined fault systems, which play an important role in the processes of mineral formation, have a northwestern, northeastern and latitudinal strike. The zoning of the study area according to the gravitational field, its characteristics and available geological information made it possible to identify 13 homogeneous areas. Each area is characterised by a certain level of gravitational field, the values of dispersion and total field gradient, as well as correlations between attributes. The classification results confirms the complexity of the geological structure of the area under study and the presence of three main strikes of the systems of tectonic dislocations – northwestern, northeastern and latitudinal. Conclusions . A large number of tectonic dislocations of various strikes and intensities, revealed using the methods of the probabilistic-statistical approach, implemented in the “COSCAD 3D” computer technology, indicates that the area under study is promising in terms of ore deposits.
Integrating geospatial data and multi-criteria analysis for mapping and evaluating the mineralization potential of the Dschang pluton (Western Cameroon)

Abstract:The Dschang area has substantial mineral and geological exploration potentialities. However, its basement is unclear due to lack of studies on mineral and lithology mapping, and other mineralization indices. The lithological units and potential hydrothermal alteration zones in the Dschang area are investigated here using remote sensing; geographic information systems (GIS); and statistical analysis which are essential method for geological exploration. Landsat 9 OLI, ASTER data using False Color Composites (FCC), Band Ratios (BRs), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), fuzzy-logic methods, and field observations are used to identify the rocks units and potential mineralization. The integration o these multiple methods allowed the identification of orthogneiss, granites and basalts with iron-oxides, hydroxyl and ferrous bearing as potential mineralization in the Dschang area. The Evaluation of the fuzzy membership of each alteration mineral from Landsat 9 OLI and ASTER data indicates that the highest favorability index varies from 0.8 to 1 indicating a rating index related to iron mineralization. From the statistical analysis of the geochemical data, the calcic, alkaline-calcic, and metaluminous to weakly peraluminous I-type character of the Dschang granites prove their parent magma was fertile for mineralization in Rare Earths, Cu, Sn, Mo, Zn, and Pb. In addition, analysis of lineaments illustrated three structural directions in the area (ENE-WSW to NE-SW, N-S to NNE-SSW, and NW–SE). The innovative aspect of this research is the integration and processing of Landsat 9 OLI, Fuzzy, ASTER, statistical geochemical analysis of previous data, and field investigations, which allows for the identification of rock units and potentially mineralized rock formations and defining exploration targets as well.

Abstract:Modern geosciences have to deal with large quantities and a wide variety of data, including 2-D, 3-D and 4-D seismic surveys, well logs generated by sensors, detailed lithological records, satellite images and meteorological records. These data serve important industries, such as the exploration of mineral deposits and the production of energy (Oil and Gas, Geothermal, Wind, Hydroelectric), are important in the study of the earth crust to reduce the impact of earthquakes, in land use planning, and have a fundamental role in sustainability. The volume of raw data being stored by different earth science archives today makes it impossible to rely on manual examination by scientists. The data volumes resultant of different sources, from terrestrial or aerial to satellite surveys, will reach a terabyte per day by the time all the planned satellites are flown. In particular, the oil industry has been using large quantities of data for quite a long time. Although there are published works in this area since the 70s, these days, the ubiquity of computing and sensor devices enables the collection of higher resolution data in real time, giving a new life to a mature industrial field. Understanding and finding value in this data has an impact on the efficiency of the operations in the oil and gas production chain. Efficiency gains are particularly important since the steep fall in oil prices in 2014, and represent an important opportunity for data mining and data science.

Abstract:Despite the crisis, oil and gas is still an irreplaceable energy resource. However, it is a non-renewable resource, so in addition to expanding the search, the rational exploitation of the existing fields is a challenge for the oilfield exploration and production. Combining methods including collecting, processing and analyzing existing documents and data; the results of the article have determined the workflow of building a parametric model suitable for the research object and applying geostatistics simutaneously to interpolate geological features as well as assess reliability and reduce risks. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) geological model is established according to updated datas, including geological, seismic, well log, well testing, and using as the data base for oil initially in place estimation. Specially, effectively supported establishing economic and technical plans for field development. The model results have clarified the reservoir parameters in Miocene formation, predicting potential reservoirs; expression the characteristics of reservoir distribution in 3D space. The 3D geological model of Dong Duong oilfield with a cycle is established on the basis application of geostatistical methods, stochastic simulation and is applied to describe the homogeneity of the reservoir as well as build up parameter models. The process of checking the accuracy of the model is conducted by comparing the data from the model and the input data: seismic, geological, reserve apprisal report,... illustrates that there is no difference any deviation beyond the allowable limit.

These minerals are fundamental raw materials for electronic information technologies, emerging materials, batteries, energy infrastructure, aerospace, national defense, and various industries. They play an irreplaceable role in supporting economic development, industrial transformation, and national security.There is an urgent need to intensify and enhance the exploration of critical minerals to ensure a safe and reliable supply. Geophysical methods are crucial in the exploration of mineral resources. However, critical minerals differ significantly from bulk minerals in terms of physical properties, reserves, and occurrence. Traditional geophysical exploration methods encounter numerous challenges when applied to the prospecting of critical minerals.We extend our special thanks to Geophysics for providing this valuable opportunity. As the special section editors, we are privileged to have collectively organized this "Critical minerals in geophysics" special section.Geophysical experts have contributed their research results to this section, showcasing their work in the following areas: (1) geophysical methods for critical minerals exploration; (2) modeling and data processing; (3) integrated interpretation with geophysics, geology, and geochemistry; and (4) case studies. In this section, we have included seven articles.Xue et al. define the location and shape of mineralized dolomite using a multisource geophysical data fusion technique, resulting in comprehensive geophysical profiles in the Bayan Obo mining area. Polychronopoulou et al. introduce a passive seismic methodology based purely on earthquakes for mineral exploration. It was used to delineate the location of bauxite-bearing formations and reprocess legacy active seismic data. Zhu et al. present a study using ambient noise tomography to investigate the subsurface velocity structure of the Bayan Obo deposit, revealing intricate velocity variations and potential mineralization characteristics within the mining area, offering valuable insights into deep resource exploration potential, and a better understanding of tectonic events and ore-controlling structures. Zheng et al. apply a composited processing workflow to 2D seismic data collected at the Bayan Obo REE-Nb-Fe deposit in China. The obtained subsurface images provide important information to explore local geologic features and mineral endowment. Xue et al. develop a set of techniques for determining the most effective geophysical approach for exploring Cu-Ni-Co deposits in China. Hu et al. describe an efficient deep-learning-based approach designed to cooperatively invert airborne magnetic and gravity gradient data. A well-trained network provides more accurate initial models for individual inversions, where the structural similarity is imposed through the design of the training data set without predefining relationships between physical properties. Alexander Prikhodko et al. introduce an innovative update of the airborne geophysical method audio frequency magnetotellurics for exploring territories rich in critical minerals. By measuring variations in natural magnetic and electric fields, this approach expands resistivity detection and depth of investigation beyond traditional methods, offering a comprehensive understanding of complex geologic systems, including hydrothermal-magmatic structures containing critical minerals.Finally, we extend our special thanks to the editors for their invaluable assistance and express our gratitude to our four collaborating experts. Abstract:Inadequate geological sampling information is a major constraint for 3D geological modeling of the deep geological body.Since it is relatively easier to acquire the deep geophysical data,the visualization model of the geophysical data can be formed effectively.In this study,a 3D geological modeling method by the geophysical data collected in the geological survey is proposed.It involves firstly extracting the mapping function from geophysical data to the geological property by geophysical ex-periment on the samples,and then integrating the visualization models constructed from multi-source geophysical data for inter-pretation,and finally converting the interpreted visualization model to the 3D geological model.The method proves feasible for solutions on 3D modeling concerning deep geological bodies in the project.

Abstract:Geophysical methods are very popular in Vietnam and have been applied for several decades in deep-earth investigations such as geological mapping, mineral resource searching, and especially oil and gas exploration. In the world, they have proven to be great tools in agriculture as well for soil characterization and monitoring thanks to their notable advantages including rapid data acquisition, large data coverage, high data density, non-destructive and inexpensive survey implementation. However, in Vietnam, the applications of geophysical methods in agriculture have received little attention probably due to the lack of suitable equipment and data processing techniques. This article gives an overview of popular geophysical methods being applied in agriculture in several countries to characterize and monitor soil properties such as moisture, salinity, density, texture, structure, porosity, etc. The main uses of each method are summarized, and relevant publications are given for reading recommendations with the aim of suggesting similar applications in Vietnam. Accordingly, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) are the most versatile with minimum field crew for data acquisition. They should be prioritized to try in Vietnamese agriculture. Since EMI equipment is not currently available in Vietnam, only a GPR test survey was implemented in the Agricultural Academy experimental field by the authors of Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. The preliminary result shows that the biggest challenge is to find reliable techniques to accurately infer soil properties from measured geophysical parameters, which have no explicit relationship with soil properties. Noise suppression is another problem that needs to be addressed to ensure sufficient data quality.

Abstract:Highlights • Application of geophysical well logs in various geological fields is reviewed. • Gaps between geology and geophysical well logs are identified. • AI and advanced well logs are introduced to extend the applications of geophysical well logs. Geophysical well logs are widely used in geological fields, however, there are considerable incompatibilities existing in solving geological issues using well log data. This review critically fills the gaps between geology and geophysical well logs, as assessed from peer reviewed papers and from the authors' personal experiences, in the particular goal of solving geological issues using geophysical well logs. The origin and history of geophysical logging are summarized. Next follows a review of the state of knowledge for geophysical well logs in terms of type of specifications, vertical resolution, depth of investigations and demonstrated applications. Then the current status and advances in applications of geophysical well logs in fields of structural geology, sedimentary geology and petroleum geology are discussed. Well logs are used in structural and sedimentary geology in terms of structure detection, in situ stress evaluation, sedimentary characterization, sequence stratigraphy division and fracture prediction. Well logs can also be applied in petroleum geology fields of optimizing sweet spots for hydraulic fracturing in unconventional oil and gas resource. Geophysical well logs are extending their application in other fields of geosciences, and geological issues will be efficiently solved via well logs with the improvements of advanced well log suits. Further work is required in order to improve accuracy and diminish uncertainties by introducing artificial intelligence. This review provides a systematic and clear descriptions of the applications of geophysical well log data along with examples of how the data is displayed and processed for solving geologic problems. Abstract:As the world's demand for energy continues to increase, the efficiency and accuracy of exploration and exploitation of oil and gas resources have become increasingly important. The development of GIS and RS technologies has provided unprecedented convenience and opportunities for the exploitation of oil and gas resources. GIS and RS technologies have played a revolutionary role in pinpointing potential oil and gas fields, evaluating exploration risks, and monitoring the environmental impacts of exploitation activities. This paper focuses on the application of GIS and RS technologies in the field of oil exploration, focusing on the application of novel data sources such as LiDAR, high-resolution remote sensing imagery, UAV, and satellite remote sensing technologies, and the role of these technologies in assessing the environmental impacts of oil exploitation. This paper concludes that GIS and RS technologies not only enhance the accuracy of oil and gas field detection but also play a non-negligible role in environmental protection. Accurately detecting changes in surface water and groundwater helps to identify and prevent the occurrence of pollution that may be caused by exploration activities at an early stage. The significance of this paper is not only to improve the efficiency and accuracy of oil exploration but also to promote environmental protection and sustainable development.

Abstract:Petroleum exploration and exploitation are important parts of the petroleum industry. In the process of oil exploration and exploitation, a great deal of data can be collected. These data form 3D data sets. The aim of using these data is that it reappears oil distributions and parameter dynamic change intuitively and truly in course of petroleum exploration and exploitation. The article applies 3D data sets visualization technique to the geological modeling and numerical value simulation in course of petroleum exploration and exploitation and by using visualization technology realizes the construction of 3D image from 3D data sets visualization technology. The article uses envelopment box technique and bedding storage structure in algorithm for enhancing speed of algorithm, and to achieve a better effect. It reappears oil distributions and parameter dynamic change truly in course of petroleum exploration and exploitation, and directs the designers to make sure of the wells' locations and to improve the effectveness of oil production.

Abstract:The study of the primary dikes in a given region is essential for comprehending its geological evolution. This study focuses on the offshore region in the state of Espírito Santo (ES), which encompasses one of the major oil sedimentary basins in the country, namely the Espírito Santo Basin. The study area is considered structurally complex due to the presence of numerous structural features, and the present work focuses on the Colatina Lineament. Despite several decades of oil and rock prospecting studies, the lateral and depth boundaries of the lineament are still unknown. Therefore, this study aims to utilize geophysical methods, including magnetic. and gravity, obtained from aerial and terrestrial surveys, respectively, to characterize the Colatina Lineament structurally. The study generated thematic maps using highlight filters to investigate the structural importance of the zone of influence. Additionally, 2.5D forward modeling was performed from gravity data, revealing numerous geological structures generated by crustal movements. To visualize the geological encompassed by the Colatina Lineament, a 3D inversion of the magnetic data was performed. The outcomes facilitated the visualization and mapping of the dike bundle and confirmed the impact of tectonic processes in the region.

Abstract:Mapping the boundaries of subsurface geological structures constitutes a fundamental aspect of interpreting gravity data. Various methods relying on gravity derivatives have been introduced to delineate these boundaries. However, these approaches are not without their limitations, often leading to the generation of false edges or resulting in divergent outcomes. This article introduces a novel method that utilizes the power law approach and balanced total horizontal derivative for mapping gravity data edges. To assess the robustness of the proposed technique, we conducted tests on model examples and applied it to a real case study in northwest Vietnam. The results demonstrate that our method can accurately and clearly map edges in comparison to existing methodologies, while also preventing the generation of spurious edges in the output maps.

Abstract:Remote sensing, as a direct adjunct to field, lithologic and structural mapping, and more recently, GIS have played an important role in the study of mineralized areas. A review on the application of remote sensing in mineral resource mapping is attempted here. It involves understanding the application of remote sensing in lithologic, structural and alteration mapping. Remote sensing becomes an important tool for locating mineral deposits, in its own right, when the primary and secondary processes of mineralization result in the formation of spectral anomalies. Reconnaissance lithologic mapping is usually the first step of mineral resource mapping. This is complimented with structural mapping, as mineral deposits usually occur along or adjacent to geologic structures, and alteration mapping, as mineral deposits are commonly associated with hydrothermal alteration of the surrounding rocks. In addition to these, understanding the use of hyperspectral remote sensing is crucial as hyperspectral data can help identify and thematically map regions of exploration interest by using the distinct absorption features of most minerals. Finally coming to the exploration stage, GIS forms the perfect tool in integrating and analyzing various georeferenced geoscience data in selecting the best sites of mineral deposits or rather good candidates for further exploration.

3D inversion of 2D electrical resistivity data for geotechnical analysis

Abstract:Geophysical methods are effective tools for geotechnical analysis. In particular, the two-dimensional electrical resistivity method is widely applied in the determination of broken, cracked, and karst cave structures in many countries around the world. The information given by this method plays an important role in preventing and mitigating the risk of geological hazards caused by geological structures. Geotechnical analysis is also an important step in civil construction. However, the interpretation of two-dimensional problems with individual sections still has certain limitations, such as the delineation of the spatial distribution of interesting objects in the entire survey area. We propose a new data processing procedure for the two-dimensional electrical resistivity methods based on rearranging the data as the input of three-dimensional inversion. If the distribution of survey lines is dense enough, we can use two-dimensional data to solve the three-dimensional inverse problems. This inversion will give us a diagram of resistivity distribution in three-dimensional space, which is intuitive and high detail in identifying interesting objects. In this study, the authors have solved the three-dimensional inverse problems from the two-dimensional electrical resistivity survey carried out in the Hoa Lac area, west of Hanoi city. The result shows that the resistivity distribution in three-dimensional space not only increases the intuition but also the accuracy in reflecting the spatial distribution of hidden underground objects. This also defines the localization and determination of fracture zones in the study area as more reliable than explained in each section according to the results of solving two-dimensional inverse problems. The effectiveness of this new method has been proven when compared with drilling results in the studied area.
