Abstract:We define chirality in the context of chiral algebra. We show that it coincides with the more general chirality definition that appears in the literature, which does not require the existence of a quadratic space. Neither matrix representation of the orthogonal group nor complex numbers are used.

Abstract:The definition of the term chirality by Lord Kelvin in 1893 and 1904 is analyzed by taking crystallography at that time into account. This shows clearly that chirality is a relational geometric-physical property, i.e., two relations between isometric objects are possible: homochiral or heterochiral. In scientific articles the relational term chirality is often mistaken for the two valued measure for the individual (absolute) sense of chirality, an arbitrary attributive term.

Abstract:General features of microscopic and macroscopic chiral structures can be discussed under the standard of orthogonal group theory. Configuration space of systems, not physical space, is taken into account. This change of perspective allows to overcome traditional shortcomings related to true and false chirality, statistical realization of mirror images, classification of objects as more or less chiral. From this viewpoint, a chiral object is a physical system whose configurations are described by the O(N) algebra in an abstract N-dimensional space. A quantum mechanical interpretation is straightforward due to the fact that combinations of chiral states give rise to parity states which can be interpreted as energy eigenstates.
On Quantitative Assessment of Chirality: Right- and Left-Handed Geometric Objects

Abstract:Two methods for quantitatively assessing the chirality of a set are considered. As a measure of the noncoincidence between two sets, one method uses the area of the symmetric difference between them, and the other, the Hausdorff distance between them. It is shown that these methods, generally speaking, do not provide a correct quantitative estimate for a fairly wide class of sets, such as bounded Borel sets. Using examples of flat triangles and convex quadrangles, we consider the problem of dividing geometric objects into right- and left-handed ones. For triangles, level lines of two versions of the chirality measure are calculated on the plane of angular parameters. For a spatial helix, the values of two versions of the chirality index are found by calculating the mixed product of vectors and the Hausdorff distance between two sets, respectively.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of quadratic duality for chiral algebras. This can be viewed as a chiral version of the usual quadratic duality for quadratic associative algebras. We study the relationship between this duality notion and the Maurer-Cartan equations for chiral algebras, which turns out to be parallel to the associative algebra case. We also present some explicit examples.

Abstract:On the basis of empirical Fischer projections, we developed an algebraic approach to central molecular chirality of tetrahedral molecules. The elements of such an algebra are obtained from the 24 projections which a single chiral tetrahedron can generate in S and R absolute configurations. They constitute a matrix representation of the O(4) orthogonal group. According to this representation, given a molecule with n chiral centres, it is possible to define an index of chirality, where n is the number of stereogenic centres of the molecule and p the number of permutations observed under rotations and superimpositions of the tetrahedral molecule to its mirror image. The chirality index, not only assigns the global chirality of a given tetrahedral chain, but indicates also a way to predict the same property for new compounds, which can be consistently built up

Abstract:A natural generalization of a Lie algebra connection, or Yang-Mills field, to the case of a Lie-Kac superalgebra, for example SU(m/n), just in terms of ordinary complex functions and differentials, is proposed. Using the chirality χ which defines the supertrace of the superalgebra: STr (...) = Tr ( χ... ), we construct a covariant differential: D = χ ( d + A ) + Φ, where A is the standard even Lie-subalgebra connection 1-form and Φ a scalar field valued in the odd module. Despite the fact that Φ is a scalar, Φ anticommutes with ( χA ) because χ anticommutes with the odd generators hidden in Φ. Hence the curvature F = DD is a superalgebra-valued linear map which respects the Bianchi identity and correctly defines a chiral parallel transport compatible with a generic Lie superalgebra structure.

Abstract:In this article, we determine the non-real elements--the ones that are not conjugate to their inverses--in the group $G = G_2(q)$ when $char(F_q)\neq 2,3$. We use this to show that this group is chiral; that is, there is a word w such that $w(G)\neq w(G)^{-1}$. We also show that most classical finite simple groups are achiral

Abstract:We explain how following the representation of 3D crystallographic space groups in geometric algebra it is further possible to similarly represent the 162 socalled subperiodic groups of crystallography in geometric algebra. We construct a new compact geometric algebra group representation symbol, which allows to read off the complete set of geometric algebra generators. For clarity we moreover state explicitly what generators are chosen. The group symbols are based on the representation of point groups in geometric algebra by versors (Clifford group, Lipschitz elements).

Abstract:We study chiral algebra in the reduction of 3D $\mathcal{N} = 2 $ supersymmetric gauge theories on an interval with the $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ Dirichlet boundary conditions on both ends. By invoking the 3D ``twisted formalism'' and the 2D $\beta\gamma$-description we explicitly find the perturbative $\overline{Q}_+$ cohomology of the reduced theory. It is shown that the vertex algebras of boundary operators are enhanced by the line operators. A full non-perturbative result is found in the abelian case, where the chiral algebra is given by the rank two Narain lattice VOA, and two more equivalent descriptions are provided. Conjectures and speculations on the nonperturbative answer in the non-abelian case are also given.

Abstract:Chiral de Rham complex introduced by Malikov et al. in 1998, is a sheaf of vertex algebras on any complex analytic manifold or non-singular algebraic variety. Starting from the vertex algebra of global sections of chiral de Rham complex on the upper half plane, we consider the subspace of $\Gamma$-invariant sections that are meromorphic at the cusps. The space is again a vertex operator algebra, with a linear basis consisting of lifting formulas of meromorphic modular forms. We will describe two types of lifting formulas, and generalize the Rankin-Cohen bracket to the meromorphic modular forms. As an application, we will show that the vertex algebras constructed by congruence subgroups are simple.

Abstract:The distinction of chiral and mirror symmetric objects is straightforward from a geometrical point of view. Since the biological as well as the optical activity of molecules strongly depend on their handedness, chirality has recently attracted high interest in the field of nano-optics. Various aspects of associated phenomena including the influences of internal and external degrees of freedom on the optical response have been discussed. Here, we propose a constructive method to evaluate the possibility of observing any chiral response from an optical scatterer. Based on solely the T-matrix of one enantiomer, planes of minimal chiral response are located and compared to geometric mirror planes. This provides insights into the relation of geometric and optical properties and enables identifying the potential of chiral scatterers for nano-optical experiments.

Abstract:The chiral algebra of a 4D ≥ 2 superconformal field theory is a vertex operator algebra generated by the Schur subsector of the 4D theory and its rigid (yet rich) structure has been useful in constraining and classifying 4D = 2 SCFTs. We study how the chiral algebra arises from the worldsheet perspective. In the worldsheet CFT dual of 4D = 4 SYM at the free point, we extract the subsector that corresponds to the spacetime Schur operators at generic coupling, and show how they generate the chiral algebra. The result can be easily generalized to 4D = 2 superconformal field theories that arise as orbifolds of 4D = 4 SYM.

Abstract:We introduce the chiral domain of an arrangement of cameras $\mathcal{A} = \{A_1,\dots, A_m\}$ which is the subset of $\mathbb{P}^3$ visible in $\mathcal{A}$. It generalizes the classical definition of chirality to include all of $\mathbb{P}^3$ and offers a unifying framework for studying multiview chirality. We give an algebraic description of the chiral domain which allows us to define and describe a chiral version of Triggs' joint image. We then use the chiral domain to re-derive and extend prior results on chirality due to Hartley.

Two-component Pseudovectoral Chirality Function for Tetrahedra

Abstract:Chirality, the lack of inversion symmetry, is a geometrical property critical to chemistry, biology and material sciences. In the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$ chriality can ususally be characterized with four-point structrual information. Various functions have therefore been proposed to quantify chirality of tetrahedra, which can be extended to other 3D objects, including molecules. However, existing functions are scalars or pseudoscalars and are unable to simultaneously possess all the desirable properties of chirality functions: detectability of chirality, inversion antisymmetry and continuity. We observe that to avoid this difficulty, any chirality function for tetrahedra must be a pseudovector with at least two components. In light of this, we propose a two-component pseudovectoral chirality function for tetrahedra that satisfies all the desirable properties. We plan to use this function to map the "chiral zeros" of existing pseudoscalar chirality functions and to design a microstructure descriptor for the chirality of many-body systems and multi-phase media in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Abstract:Chirality is solely a concept with respect to geometry,it is a pseudo-scalar without any connection to the physical world.On the basis of my analysis,molecules not only have a spatial arrangement of atoms but also possess a spatial arrangement of electric dipoles.Therefore,any simple geometric figure is insufficient to describe the physical properties of molecules.Chiral arrangement of intrinsic dipoles is specified in chiral molecules.The chiral dipolar field,larger than the molecule itself,can be defined as a physical state that may guarantee the connection to the physical world.A pair of enantiomers actually is a two-state system with respect to chiral fields.Logically,the intrinsic chiral fields rather than the chiral geometry are responsible for optical rotations of enantiomers in ground state,since fields are physical reality and they possess intrinsic directions.
$\hbar$-Vertex algebras and chiralization of star products

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a $\hbar$-vertex algebra, which is an algebraic structure similar to a vertex algebra, with a deformed translation covariance axiom. We study the structure theory of $\hbar$-vertex algebras, highlighting similarities with the structure theory of vertex algebras. We prove results analogous to Goddard's Uniqueness Theorem, Reconstruction Theorem, Borcherds Identity and OPE Expansion Formula. We also introduce the related notions of a $\hbar$-Lie conformal algebra and of a $\hbar$-Poisson vertex algebra. The main example of $\hbar$-vertex algebras are vertex algebras with deformed vertex operators $Y_\hbar(a,z)=(1+\hbar z)^{\Delta_a}Y(a,z)$, where $\Delta_a$ is the eigenvalue of a Hamiltonian operator $H$. We simplify the construction of the Zhu algebra using the formalism of $\hbar$-vertex algebras. As a further application of the theory developed in the first part of the paper, we discuss the chiralization of classical star-products. We compute explicit formulae for the chiralization of a class of star-products, including the Moyal-Weyl and the Gutt star-products. Putting $\hbar=0$, these formulae yield explicit formulae for deformation quantizations of a class of Poisson vertex algebras.
