Abstract:We explain how following the representation of 3D crystallographic space groups in geometric algebra it is further possible to similarly represent the 162 socalled subperiodic groups of crystallography in geometric algebra. We construct a new compact geometric algebra group representation symbol, which allows to read off the complete set of geometric algebra generators. For clarity we moreover state explicitly what generators are chosen. The group symbols are based on the representation of point groups in geometric algebra by versors (Clifford group, Lipschitz elements).

Abstract:Already Hermann Grassmann's father Justus (1829, 1830) published two works on the geometrical description of crystals, influenced by the earlier works of C.S. Weiss (1780-1856) on three main crystal forces governing crystal formation. In his 1840 essay on the derivation of crystal shapes from the general law of crystal formation Hermann established the notion of a three-dimensional vectorial system of forces with rational coefficients, that represent the interior crystal structure, regulate its formation, its shape and physical behavior. In the Ausdehnungslehre 1844 (Paragraph 171) he finally writes: I shall conclude this presentation by one of the most beautiful applications which can be made of the science treated, i.e. the application to crystal figures (Scholz, 1996). The geometry of crystals thus certainly influenced the Ausdehnungslehre. In this paper we see how Grassmann's work influenced Clifford's creation of geometric algebras, which in turn leads to a new geometric description of crystal symmetry suitable for modern computer algebra graphics.

A Clifford Algebraic Framework for Coxeter Group Theoretic Computations

Abstract:Real physical systems with reflective and rotational symmetries such as viruses, fullerenes and quasicrystals have recently been modeled successfully in terms of three-dimensional (affine) Coxeter groups. Motivated by this progress, we explore here the benefits of performing the relevant computations in a Geometric Algebra framework, which is particularly suited to describing reflections. Starting from the Coxeter generators of the reflections, we describe how the relevant chiral (rotational), full (Coxeter) and binary polyhedral groups can be easily generated and treated in a unified way in a versor formalism. In particular, this yields a simple construction of the binary polyhedral groups as discrete spinor groups. These in turn are known to generate Lie and Coxeter groups in dimension four, notably the exceptional groups D4, F4 and H4. A Clifford algebra approach thus reveals an unexpected connection between Coxeter groups of ranks 3 and 4. We discuss how to extend these considerations and computations to the Conformal Geometric Algebra setup, in particular for the non-crystallographic groups, and construct root systems and quasicrystalline point arrays. We finally show how a Clifford versor framework sheds light on the geometry of the Coxeter element and the Coxeter plane for the examples of the twodimensional non-crystallographic Coxeter groups I2(n) and the threedimensional groups A3, B3, as well as the icosahedral group H3. Projective Spacetime Symmetry of Spacetime Crystals

Abstract:Wigner's seminal work on the Poincaré group revealed one of the fundamental principles of quantum theory: symmetry groups are projectively represented. The condensed-matter counterparts of the Poincaré group could be the spacetime groups of periodically driven crystals or spacetime crystals featuring spacetime periodicity. In this study, we establish the general theory of projective spacetime symmetry algebras of spacetime crystals, and reveal their intrinsic connections to gauge structures. As important applications, we exhaustively classify (1,1)D projective symmetry algebras and systematically construct spacetime lattice models for them all. Additionally, we present three consequences of projective spacetime symmetry that surpass ordinary theory: the electric Floquet-Bloch theorem, Kramers-like degeneracy of spinless Floquet crystals, and symmetry-enforced crossings in the Hamiltonian spectral flows. Our work provides both theoretical and experimental foundations to explore novel physics protected by projective spacetime symmetry of spacetime crystals.

Abstract:We introduce a class of Lie superalgebras, called spin c supersymmetry algebras, constructed from spinor representations. The construction is motivated by supersymmetry algebras used by physicists. On a Riemannian manifold, a Kahler manifold, and a hyperkahler manifold respectively, it is known that some natural operators on the space of differential forms generate certain Lie superalgebras. It turns out that they correspond to spin(c)(2), spin (c)(3), and spin (c)(5) supersymmetry algebras respectively. Motivated by Mirror Symmetry Conjecture, we also consider supersymmetries on Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Abstract:Recently there has been an increasing interest in the study of generalized symmetries in dimensions higher than two. This has lead to the discovery of various manifestations of generalized symmetries, notably higher-group and non-invertible symmetries, in four dimensions. In this paper we shall examine what happens to this structure when the 4d theory is compactified to lower dimensions, specifically to 3d and 2d, where we shall be mainly interested in generalized symmetry structures whose origin can be linked to mixed flavor-gauge anomalies. We discuss several aspects of the compactification, and in particular argue that under certain conditions the discussed generalized symmetry structure may trivialize in the infrared. Nevertheless, we show that even when this happens the presence of the 4d generalized symmetry structure may still leave an imprint on the low-energy theory in terms of additional 't Hooft anomalies or by breaking part of the symmetry. We apply and illustrate this using known examples of compactifications from four dimensions, particularly, the reduction of 4d = 1 U( N c ) SQCD on a circle to 3d and on a sphere to 2d.

Abstract:We define a CR structure on a distinguished hyperplane in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ and the CR sub-Laplacian on this CR manifold. We also define symmetries of the CR sub-Laplacian in general and for this special case construct all of them using the ambient construction. Then we investigate the algebra structure of the symmetry algebra of the sub-Laplacian. For this purpose we derive the decomposition of $S^{k}_{0}\mathfrak{sl}(V)$ under the action of $SL(V)$.

Abstract:We present a recent definition of symmetry generating vector fields on manifolds equipped with a first-order reductive Cartan geometry. We apply this definition to a number of spacetime geometries used in gravity theories and show that it agrees with the usual notions of symmetry of affine, Riemann-Cartan, Riemannian, Weizenböck and Finsler spacetimes.

Remarks on Geometric Engineering, Symmetry TFTs and Anomalies

Abstract:Geometric engineering is a collection of tools developed to establish dictionaries between local singularities in string theory and (supersymmetric) quantum fields. Extended operators and defects, as well as their higher quantum numbers captured by topological symmetries, can be encoded within geometric engineering dictionaries. In this paper we revisit and clarify aspects of these techniques, with special emphasis on 't Hooft anomalies, interpreted from the SymTFT perspective as obstructions to the existence of Neumann boundary conditions. These obstructions to gauging higher symmetries are captured via higher link correlators for the SymTFT on spheres. In this work, we give the geometric engineering counterpart of this construction in terms of higher links of topological membranes. We provide a consistency check in the context of 5D SCFTs with anomalous 1-form symmetries, where we give two independent derivations of the anomaly in terms of higher links, one purely field theoretical and the other purely geometrical. Along the way, we also recover the construction of non-invertible duality defects in 4D $\mathcal N=4$ SYM from a geometric engineering perspective.

A Symmetry-centric Perspective on the Geometry of the String Landscape and the Swampland

Abstract:As famously observed by Ooguri and Vafa nearly twenty years ago, scalar field moduli spaces in quantum gravity appear to exhibit various universal features. For instance, they seem to be infinite in diameter, have trivial fundamental group, and feature towers of massive particles that become light in their asymptotic limits. In this essay, we explain how these features can be reformulated in more modern language using generalized notions of global symmetries. Such symmetries are ubiquitous in non-gravitational quantum field theories, but it is widely believed that they must be either gauged or broken in quantum gravity. In what follows, we will see that the observations of Ooguri and Vafa can be understood as consequences of such gauging or breaking.

Gauging Spacetime Symmetries on the Worldsheet and the Geometric Langlands Program

Abstract:We study the two-dimensional twisted (0,2) sigma-model on various smooth complex flag manifolds G/B, and explore its relevance to the geometric Langlands program. We find that an equivalence - at the level of the holomorphic chiral algebra - between a bosonic string on G/B and a B-gauged version of itself on G, will imply an isomorphism of classical W-algebras and a level relation which underlie a geometric Langlands correspondence for G=SL(N,C). This furnishes an alternative physical interpretation of the geometric Langlands correspondence for G=SL(N,C), to that demonstrated earlier by Kapustin and Witten via an electric-magnetic duality of four-dimensional gauge theory. Likewise, the Hecke operators and Hecke eigensheaves will have an alternative physical interpretation in terms of the correlation functions of local operators in the holomorphic chiral algebra of a quasi-topological sigma-model without boundaries. A forthcoming paper will investigate the interpretation of a ``quantum'' geometric Langlands correspondence for G=SL(N,C) in a similar setting, albeit with fluxes of the sigma-model moduli which induce a ``quantum'' deformation of the relevant classical algebras turned on.

Generalized Minkowski spacetime with geometric algebra

Abstract:We begin from the generalised eight-dimensional Minkowski spacetime structure, previously developed in Clifford geometric algebra $ C\ell(\Re^3) $. We propose that this is the correct algebraic representation for physical three-dimensional space. We find that this representation incorporates spin and helicity directly into spacetime, in a Lorentz invariant manner. From this foundation, based on purely algebraic arguments, we derive Minkowski spacetime, the properties of electromagnetic radiation and Maxwell's equations. These results being achieved all without physical arguments, showing that these physical laws are actually purely geometric effects. This approach also leads to a generalization of complex mass and proper time. Several insight about time are produced, including an arrow of time, which ultimately becomes a five-dimensional property. We also provide a new argument explaining the non-existence of magnetic monopoles. We suggest that the rotational freedoms, inherent in three-dimensional physical space are an important aspect of nature, not properly addressed in physics, as they are not incorporated within the spacetime background, as achieved in this paper.

Unified Theory of Quantum Crystalline Symmetries

Abstract:Symmetry groups are projectively represented in quantum mechanics, and crystalline symmetries are fundamental in condensed matter physics. Here, we systematically present a unified theory of quantum mechanical space groups from two complementary aspects. First, we provide a decomposition form for the space-group factor systems to characterize all quantum space groups. It consists of three factors, the factor system for the translation subgroup $L$, an in-homogeneous factor system for the point group $P$, and a factor connecting $L$ and $P$. The three factors satisfy three consistency equations, which are exactly solvable and can completely exhaust all factor systems for space groups. Second, since factors systems are classified by the second cohomology group, we show the (co)homology groups for space groups can be derived from Borel's equivariant (co)homology theory, which leads to an algorithm that can compute all (co)homology groups for space groups. To demonstrate the general theory, we explicitly present quantum wallpaper groups with the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge group. Furthermore, as a primitive application, we find the time-reversal invariant quantum space groups with inversion symmetry can lead to a novel clifford band theory, where each band is fourfold degenerate to represent certain real Clifford algebras with topologically nontrivial pinor structures over the Brillouin zone. Our work serves as a foundation for exploring quantum mechanical space groups, and can find applications in spin liquids, unconventional superconductors, and artificial lattice systems, including cold atoms, photonic and phononic crystals, and even LC electric circuit networks.

Abstract:Abstract A peculiar feature of quantum states is that they may embody so-called projective representations of symmetries rather than ordinary representations. Projective representations of space groups-the defining symmetry of crystals-remain largely unexplored. Despite recent advances in artificial crystals, whose intrinsic gauge structures necessarily require a projective description, a unified theory is yet to be established. Here, we establish such a unified theory by exhaustively classifying and representing all 458 projective symmetry algebras of time-reversal-invariant crystals from 17 wallpaper groups in two dimensions-189 of which are algebraically non-equivalent. We discover three physical signatures resulting from projective symmetry algebras, including the shift of high-symmetry momenta, an enforced nontrivial Zak phase, and a spinless eight-fold nodal point. Our work offers a theoretical foundation for the field of artificial crystals and opens the door to a wealth of topological states and phenomena beyond the existing paradigms.

Abstract:We define and investigate a geometric object, called an associative geometry, corresponding to an associative algebra (and, more generally, to an associative pair). Associative geometries combine aspects of Lie groups and of generalized projective geometries, where the former correspond to the Lie product of an associative algebra and the latter to its Jordan product. A further development of the theory encompassing involutive associative algebras will be given in subsequent work.

Abstract:We survey the development of Clifford's geometric algebra and some of its engineering applications during the last 15 years. Several recently developed applications and their merits are discussed in some detail. We thus hope to clearly demonstrate the benefit of developing problem solutions in a unified framework for algebra and geometry with the widest possible scope: from quantum computing and electromagnetism to satellite navigation, from neural computing to camera geometry, image processing, robotics and beyond.

Abstract:We extend a classification of irreducible, almost-commutative geometries whose spectral action is dynamically non-degenerate, to internal algebras that have six simple summands. We find essentially four particle models: An extension of the standard model by a new species of fermions with vectorlike coupling to the gauge group and gauge invariant masses, two versions of the electro-strong model and a variety of the electro-strong model with Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:The formalism for histories-based generalized quantum mechanics developed in two earlier papers is applied to the treatment of histories (of particles or fields or more general objects) in curved spacetimes (which need not admit foliation in spacelike hypersurfaces). The construction of the space of temporal supports (a partial semigroup generalizing the space of finite time sequences employed in traditional temporal description of histories) employs spacelike subsets of spacetime having dimensionality less than or equal to three. Definition of symmetry is sharpened by the requirement of continuity of mappings (employing topological partial semigroups). It is shown that with this proviso, a symmetry in our formalism implies a conformal isometry of the spacetime metric.

Classifying Order-Two Spatial Symmetries in Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians: Point-gapped AZ and AZ$^†$ Classes

Abstract:Crystalline topological insulators and superconductors have been a prominent topic in the field of condensed matter physics. These systems obey certain crystalline (spatial) symmetries that depend on the geometry of the lattice. The presence of spatial symmetries can lead to shift in the classification of ten fold Altland Zirnbauer class, given rise to new symmetry protected topological phases. If the constraint of Hermiticity is broken, the classification expand into 38 fold. In this paper, following procedures in Hermitian systems, we classify all possible types of order-two spatial symmetries for point gapped non Hermitian systems within 16 out of 38 non Hermitian topological classes. These 16 classes are denoted by AZ and AZ^$†$ classes. We show that, similar to the Hermitian case, spatial symmetries will also lead to a shift in the classification of AZ and AZ^$†$ classes. There also exist novel symmetry protected topological phases exclusive to point gapped non Hermitian Hamiltonians. Toy models are also given based on our classifications.
