Abstract:Shixia's earlier work focuses on topic-based visual text analysis, which aims to address the challenge of diverse meanings of natural language expressions.She and her coworkers tightly integrated sophisticated analytical techniques with powerful interactive interfaces to allow people to incrementally explore and understand analysis results that would otherwise not be possible using traditional approaches.Her landmark work, TIARA, is the first to combine sophisticated, topic-based text summarization techniques with interactive visualization to support iterative and progressive text analysis.TIARA was followed by TextFlow for analyzing topic merging/splitting.It is based on a hierarchical Dirichlet process mixture of multinomial distributions and a river metaphor.Later, she and her coworkers demonstrated the usefulness of visual analytics for streaming text analysis and heterogeneous text analysis.She received 4 honorable mentions, and had 2 IEEE TVCG spotlight articles and an IEEE PacificVis Top 1 cited paper in the past decade.Her IEEE VIS paper on TextFlow is highlighted as one of the representative works in the 25 years' history of IEEE VIS.Her topicbased text visualization technology has been used in mass-market products, including IBM Cognos, Microsoft Bing, and Microsoft Power BI.

Abstract:Dr. Geraldine McGinty is no stranger to both political accolades and medical honors. As an internationally recognized expert in health economics and an advocate for patient centered care, Dr. McGinty has gained global impact as an influential decision maker and leading figure in radiology and imaging informatics. In May 2018, McGinty became the first woman chair of the American College of Radiology(ACR), and in 2020 became the 97th ACR President (ACR, n.d.). 1 During her tenure, she spearheaded numerous initiatives from data science to health equity. In addition, she advocated for new governance structures to further the organization's mission of "empowering the radiologists of the future". 2 This year, we have the honor of highlighting her accomplishments and outlook towards the field's future as the 2024 American College of Radiology Gold Medal recipient– only the 15th female in over 100 years of ACR history to receive this most prestigious award.

The award was initiated in 2001, and until last year when ASHG discontinued the use of proper names for its awards, it was called the "Cotterman Award," named for C.W. Cotterman, the first AJHG editor-in-chief. I'd like to use this opportunity to provide some background about the process whereby the awardees are identified and the significance of the award.

Abstract:This paper describes the usage of Computer Graphics and Interactive, Digital Storytelling Concepts within the Virtual Human project and its technical platform. Based on a brief overview of the Virtual Human approach, global aims and first R&D results, the Virtual Human platform is introduced. Hereby, methods and concepts for the authoring environment, the narration engine and the avalon player as rendering platform are provided as well as an overview of the Direction and Player Markup Language used for interfaces purposes between these components. Finally, our current Virtual Human demonstrator recently presented at CeBIT 2004 in Hannover using these methods and concepts is described and further R&D activities are pointed out within a brief summary and outlook.

What Kind of Person Wins the Turing Award?

Abstract:Computer science has grown rapidly since its inception in the 1950s and the pioneers in the field are celebrated annually by the A.M. Turing Award. In this paper, we attempt to shed light on the path to influential computer scientists by examining the characteristics of the 72 Turing Award laureates. To achieve this goal, we build a comprehensive dataset of the Turing Award laureates and analyze their characteristics, including their personal information, family background, academic background, and industry experience. The FP-Growth algorithm is used for frequent feature mining. Logistic regression plot, pie chart, word cloud and map are generated accordingly for each of the interesting features to uncover insights regarding personal factors that drive influential work in the field of computer science. In particular, we show that the Turing Award laureates are most commonly white, male, married, United States citizen, and received a PhD degree. Our results also show that the age at which the laureate won the award increases over the years; most of the Turing Award laureates did not major in computer science; birth order is strongly related to the winners' success; and the number of citations is not as important as one would expect.

Abstract:Future Time Traveller is a European project that aims at transforming career guidance of generation Z through an innovative, games-based scenario approach and to prepare the next generation for the jobs of the future. The pro-ject objective is to foster innovative thinking and future-oriented mindset of young people, through an innovative game-based virtual world environment. This environment helps them explore the future world, understand the trends that shape the future world of work, the emerging jobs, and the skills they will require. The Future Time Traveller project is implemented by a team of experts in 7 European countries (Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, and United Kingdom). The project target groups include young people (genera-tion Z), career guidance practitioners and experts, and policymakers. This paper presents, in brief, the Future Time Traveller project and introduces the reader to the main features and functionalities of the 3-dimensional virtual world and the games developed in this environment.
