Abstract:At the dawn of the 20th Century, the underlying chemistry that produced the observed effects of ionizing radiation, e.g., X rays and Radium salts, on aqueous solutions was either unknown or restricted to products found postirradiation. For example, the Curies noted that sealed aqueous solutions of Radium inexplicably decomposed over time, even when kept in the dark. By 1928 there were numerous papers describing the phenomenological effects of ionizing radiation on a wide variety of materials, including the irradiated hands of early radiologists. One scientist who became intensely interested in these radiation effects was Hugo Fricke (Fricke Dosimetry) who established a laboratory in 1928 dedicated to studies on chemical effects of radiation, the results of which he believed were necessary to understand observed radiobiological effects. In this Platinum Issue of Radiation Research (70 years of continuous publication), we present the early history of the development of radiation chemistry and its contributions to all levels of mechanistic radiobiology. We summarize its development as one of the four disciplinary pillars of the Radiation Research Society and its Journal, Radiation Research, founded during the period 1952-1954. In addition, the work of scientists who contributed substantially to the discipline of Radiation Chemistry and to the birth, life and culture of the Society and its journal is presented. In the years following 1954, the increasing knowledge about the underlying temporal and spatial properties of the species produced by various types of radiation is summarized and related to its radiobiology and to modern technologies (e.g., pulsed radiolysis, electron paramagnetic resonance) which became available as the discipline of radiation chemistry developed. A summary of important results from these studies on Radiation Chemistry/Biochemistry in the 20th and 21st Century up to the present time is presented. Finally, we look into the future to see what possible directions radiation chemistry studies might take, based upon promising current research. We find at least two possible directions that will need radiation chemistry expertise to ensure proper experimental design and interpretation of data. These are FLASH radiotherapy, and mechanisms underlying the effects of low doses of radiation delivered at low dose rates. Examples of how radiation chemists could provide beneficial input to these studies are provided.

Abstract:In the late nineteenth century, Antoine Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity and thus the physics of weak interactions, well before atomic and quantum physics was known. The different types of radioactive decay, alpha, beta, and gamma decay, all are different types of interactions causing the same, spontaneous, and time-independent decay of an unstable nucleus into another and more stable nucleus. Nuclear reactions in cosmic sites re-arrange the basic constituents of atomic nuclei (neutrons and protons) among the different configurations which are allowed by Nature, thus producing radioactive isotopes as a by-product. Throughout cosmic history, such reactions occur in different sites, and lead to rearrangements of the relative abundances of cosmic nuclei, a process called cosmic chemical evolution, which can be studied through the observations of radioactivity. The special role of radioactivity in such studies is contributed by the intrinsic decay of such material after it has been produced in cosmic sites. This brings in a new aspect, the clock of the radioactive decay. Observational studies of cosmic radioactivities intrinsically obtain isotopic information which are at the heart of cosmic nucleosynthesis. They are best performed by precision mass spectroscopy in terrestrial laboratories, which has been combined with sophisticated radiochemistry to extract meteoritic components originating from outside the solar system, and by spectroscopy of characteristic gamma-ray lines emitted upon radioactive decay in cosmic environments and measured with space-based telescopes. This book describes where and how specific astronomical messages from cosmic radioactivity help to complement the studies of cosmic nucleosynthesis sites anad of cosmic chemical evolution.

Abstract:Radioactivity was discovered as a by-product of searching for elements with suitable chemical properties. Understanding its characteristics led to the development of nuclear physics, understanding that unstable configurations of nucleons transform into stable end products through radioactive decay. In the universe, nuclear reactions create new nuclei under the energetic circumstances characterising cosmic nucleosynthesis sites, such as the cores of stars and supernova explosions. Observing the radioactive decays of unstable nuclei, which are by-products of such cosmic nucleosynthesis, is a special discipline of astronomy. Understanding these special cosmic sites, their environments, their dynamics, and their physical processes, is the `Astrophysics with Radioactivities' that makes the subject of this book. Abstract:Atomic physics techniques for the determination of ground-state properties of radioactive isotopes are very sensitive and provide accurate masses, binding energies, Q-values, charge radii, spins, and electromagnetic moments. Many fields in nuclear physics benefit from these highly accurate numbers. They give insight into details of the nuclear structure for a better understanding of the underlying effective interactions, provide important input for studies of fundamental symmetries in physics, and help to understand the nucleosynthesis processes that are responsible for the observed chemical abundances in the Universe. Penning-trap and and storage-ring mass spectrometry as well as laser spectroscopy of radioactive nuclei have now been used for a long time but significant progress has been achieved in these fields within the last decade. The basic principles of laser spectroscopic investigations, Penning-trap and storage-ring mass measurements of short-lived nuclei are summarized and selected physics results are discussed.

A variety of new diagnostic experiments were fielded in an effort to understand the detailed performance of the nuclear device. This article describes a series of radiochemical experiments that were designed to measure the efficiency and neutron fluence of the test. These experiments, and the scientists who led them, laid the foundation of weapons radiochemistry for decades to come.

Abstract:Radionuclides with half-lives ranging from some years to billions of years presumably synthesized outside of the solar system are now recorded in `live' or `fossil' form in various types of materials, like meteorites or the galactic cosmic rays. They bring specific astrophysical messages the deciphering of which is briefly reviewed here, with special emphasis on the contribution of Jerry Wasserburg and his collaborators to this exciting field of research. A brief mention is also made to $\gamma$-ray line astrophysics. It provides an interesting information on live short-lived radionuclides in the present interstellar medium, and thus complements in a very important way the study of extinct radionuclides in meteorites.

Abstract:The most important contributions of radiation chemistry to some selected technological issues related to water-cooled reactors, reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive wastes, and fuel evolution during final radioactive waste disposal are highlighted. Chemical reactions occurring at the operating temperatures and pressures of reactors and involving primary transients and stable products from water radiolysis are presented and discussed in terms of the kinetic parameters and radiation chemical yields. The knowledge of these parameters is essential since they serve as input data to the models of water radiolysis in the primary loop of light water reactors and super critical water reactors. Selected features of water radiolysis in heterogeneous systems, such as aqueous nanoparticle suspensions and slurries, ceramic oxides surfaces, nanoporous, and cement-based materials, are discussed. They are of particular concern in the primary cooling loops in nuclear reactors and long-term storage of nuclear waste in geological repositories. This also includes radiation-induced processes related to corrosion of cladding materials and copper-coated iron canisters, dissolution of spent nuclear fuel, and changes of bentonite clays properties. Radiation-induced processes affecting stability of solvents and solvent extraction ligands as well oxidation states of actinide metal ions during recycling of the spent nuclear fuel are also briefly summarized.

Reactions at polymer interfaces: A Monte Carlo Simulation

Abstract:Reactions at a strongly segregated interface of a symmetric binary polymer blend are investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. End functionalized homopolymers of different species interact at the interface instantaneously and irreversibly to form diblock copolymers. The simulations, in the framework of the bond fluctuation model, determine the time dependence of the copolymer production in the initial and intermediate time regime for small reactant concentration $\rho_0 R_g^3=0.163 ... 0.0406$. The results are compared to recent theories and simulation data of a simple reaction diffusion model. For the reactant concentration accessible in the simulation, no linear growth of the copolymer density is found in the initial regime, and a $\sqrt{t}$-law is observed in the intermediate stage.

Abstract:Molecules containing short-lived, radioactive nuclei are uniquely positioned to enable a wide range of scientific discoveries in the areas of fundamental symmetries, astrophysics, nuclear structure, and chemistry. Recent advances in the ability to create, cool, and control complex molecules down to the quantum level, along with recent and upcoming advances in radioactive species production at several facilities around the world, create a compelling opportunity to coordinate and combine these efforts to bring precision measurement and control to molecules containing extreme nuclei. In this manuscript, we review the scientific case for studying radioactive molecules, discuss recent atomic, molecular, nuclear, astrophysical, and chemical advances which provide the foundation for their study, describe the facilities where these species are and will be produced, and provide an outlook for the future of this nascent field.

Abstract:Abstract Radiochemistry in India essentially blossomed under the auspices of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) for the last 55 years or so. Major activities in this area are centred at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (BARC) and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (IGCAR). Though there were several centers of excellence which were established by renowned radiochemists during the 1960s at the academic institutions in different parts of the country and nurtured by their close associates during the eighties and nineties, their glamour did not last long and only very few have sustained the challenges presented by social and technological upheaval of last five decades. Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), an organ of DAE has been in the forefront for promotion of education and research in nuclear sciences at academic institutions. It sponsors symposia in Nuclear and Radiochemistry (NUCAR), Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (NAC) and Applications of Radioisotopes in Chemistry, Environment and Biology (ARCEB) which are organized periodically to provide a platform for interaction of the radiochemists within and outside DAE. A professional body, viz. Indian Association of Nuclear Chemists and Allied Scientists (IANCAS), formed in early eighties at BARC, Mumbai has been spearheading the campaign to popularize the subject of radiochemistry in schools and colleges through workshops and publishing monographs and thematic bulletins regularly in the area of interest to the radiochemists. During the last five decades, radiochemistry programme at BARC has centered around attaining excellence in basic research utilizing radiations and radioisotopes to unravel various nuclear and chemical phenomena, related to actinides and fission products. This programme encompassed a number of research and development areas such as nuclear fission, nuclear reactions, nuclear probes for materials study, nuclear and chemical properties of actinides, actinide spectroscopy, separation science of actinides, thermodynamics and characterization of fuels, post irradiation examination, chemical and non destructive assay techniques for nuclear materials. Production and application of radioisotopes in societal benefit activities in agriculture, industry and health science was another facet of the radiochemistry programme at BARC. The radiochemistry programme at IGCAR has been focused on chemistry of fast reactor and fuel cycle related materials such as sodium and boron, in addition to the chemistry of actinides, fission products and pyrochemical studies related to processing of spent fuels. Publication of about 2000 peer reviewed papers in international journals of repute and award of Ph.D. degrees to more than 150 scientists is an evidence of the front line research activities pursued under this programme. All along the 55 years, sustained efforts were made to meet the growing challenges of closed nuclear fuel cycle (both thermal as well as fast). After five decades of continuous research and development perhaps one can feel satisfied that the programme could fulfil not only the dreams of its founders but is also ready to take on the future challenges related to the second and third stage of Indian nuclear power programme.

Abstract:The quest for the origin of matter in the Universe had been the subject of philosophical and theological debates over the history of mankind, but quantitative answers could be found only by the scientific achievements of the last century. A first important step on this way was the development of spectral analysis by Kirchhoff and Bunsen in the middle of the 19$^{\rm th}$ century, which provided first insight in the chemical composition of the sun and the stars. The energy source of the stars and the related processes of nucleosynthesis, however, could be revealed only with the discoveries of nuclear physics. A final breakthrough came eventually with the compilation of elemental and isotopic abundances in the solar system, which are reflecting the various nucleosynthetic processes in detail. This review is focusing on the mass region above iron, where the formation of the elements is dominated by neutron capture, mainly in the slow ($s$) and rapid ($r$) processes. Following a brief historic account and a sketch of the relevant astrophysical models, emphasis is put on the nuclear physics input, where status and perspectives of experimental approaches are presented in some detail, complemented by the indispensable role of theory.

The main subjects covered by this topical collection are: high-precision mass measurements both with Penning traps and storage rings for neutrino physics, nuclear structure, astrophysics, and decay studies. Laser spectroscopy is applied for the determination of other ground state properties like spins, moments, and nuclear charge radii. Abstract:This book provides a self-contained and systematic introduction to classical electron theory and its quantization, non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics. The first half of the book covers the classical theory. It discusses the well-defined Abraham model of extended charges in interaction with the electromagnetic field, and gives a study of the effective dynamics of charges under the condition that, on the scale given by the size of the charge distribution, they are far apart and the applied potentials vary slowly. The second half covers the quantum theory, leading to a coherent presentation of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics. Topics discussed include non-perturbative properties of the basic Hamiltonian, the structure of resonances, the relaxation to the ground state through emission of photons, the non-perturbative derivation of the g-factor of the electron and the stability of matter.

Abstract:Studies of the classical theory of charged particles and their radiation initiated by Lorentz and Abraham have attracted our attention over a century. Nevertheless, the correct equation to describe the motion of a point charged particle is still a matter of controversy. And what about a charge "living" inside Flatland, a hypothetical world of two spatial dimensions? What is the equation of motion of a point charge in six dimensions? This book provides a self-contained and systematic introduction to problems of radiation and radiation reaction in classical field theory.
