Abstract:The classical thermodynamics reflects the significant relationship between the heat and the temperature. On the basis of the relationships, according to the mathematical derivation, this paper structures the conceptions of generalized heat, generalized thermodynamic temperature, generalized entropy and so on. The series of conceptions in the classical thermodynamics is merely a special case of the generalized thermodynamics. Based on these conceptions of generalized thermodynamics, this paper presents the new expressions of the first law and the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, these expressions are endued with new explanations. The Eq. LZ = kTS given by this paper provides theoretical basis for these new expressions.

Abstract:<p>Thermodynamics is a science concerning the state of a system, whether it is stable, metastable or unstable, when interacting with the surroundings. In this overview, fundamentals of thermodynamics are briefly reviewed through the integration of first and second laws of thermodynamics for open and nonequilibrium systems to demonstrate that the reversible equilibrium and irreversible nonequilibrium thermodynamics can be integrated to enhance the power and utilities of thermodynamics. The recent progresses in computational thermodynamics, the remaining challenges, and potential impacts in broad scientific fields are discussed. It is shown that computational thermodynamics enables the modeling of thermodynamics of a state as a function of both external and internal variables and enables quantitative calculations of a broad range of properties of a multicomponent system in terms of first and second derivatives of energy, including not only equilibrium states when there are no driving forces for any internal processes and but also non-equilibrium states with driving forces for internal processes. Consequently, external constraints such as fixed strain and internal degree of freedoms such as ordering and defects can be described in a coherent framework and applied to materials design. Furthermore, two important but largely overlooked aspects in thermodynamics will be discussed, i.e. the rigorous application of statistical thermodynamics with the probability of configurations and their contributions to system properties, and the applications of second derivatives of energy with respect to either two extensive variables or two potentials or a mixture of them in terms of understanding and predicting emergent behaviors, critical phenomena, kinetic coefficients, and mechanical properties.</p>

Abstract:On the basis of new, concise foundations, this paper establishes the four laws of thermodynamics, the Maxwell relations, and the stability requirements for response functions, in a form applicable to global (homogeneous), local (hydrodynamic) and microlocal (kinetic) equilibrium. The present, self-contained treatment needs very little formal machinery and stays very close to the formulas as they are applied by the practicing physicist, chemist, or engineer. From a few basic assumptions, the full structure of phenomenological thermodynamics and of classical and quantum statistical mechanics is recovered. Care has been taken to keep the foundations free of subjective aspects (which traditionally creep in through information or probability). One might describe the paper as a uniform treatment of the nondynamical part of classical and quantum statistical mechanics ``without statistics'' (i.e., suitable for the definite descriptions of single objects) and ``without mechanics'' (i.e., independent of microscopic assumptions). When enriched by the traditional examples and applications, this paper may serve as the basis for a course on thermal physics.

Abstract:Momentum work enables a complete shift from kinematics to dynamics. This involves changes in the very fundamentals of physics, not only in mechanics, statistical mechanics, and special relativity, as shown in Papers I–III [G. Kalies and D. D. Do, AIP Adv. 13(6), 065121 (2023); G. Kalies, D. D. Do, and S. Arnrich, AIP Adv. 13(5), 055317 (2023); and G. Kalies and D. D. Do, AIP Adv. (in press) (2023)] of this series, but also in thermodynamics. In this paper, we challenge the narrative that classical phenomenological thermodynamics is completed and show that it represents an efficient interim solution that hides essential information. The essence of heat transfer and entropy is revealed, and an answer is given to the question of why entropy had to remain abstract and elusive in the past. Furthermore, we uncover the specific forms of energy behind thermodynamic state variables, such as enthalpy, Helmholtz free energy, and Gibbs free energy, which play a central role in describing chemical reactions and phase transitions. We thereby lay the foundation for thermodynamics to evolve from a framework theory valid for macroscopic systems to vivid quantum-process thermodynamics.

International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer

Abstract:Oxford's Peter Atkins emphasizes that there are two histories, and two corresponding modern formulations, of thermodynamics. The Clausius, Boltzmann, Gibbs history and mechanistic formulation has dominated. But as Manchester's Cardwell comments, this mechanistic Newtonian-based tradition 'may be to take to narrow a view'. The other history usually traces from Sadi Carnot's new understanding engines. Although appreciated piecemeal by practicing engineers in problems of design in heat and fluid flow systems, the broader foundations of engineering thermodynamics have remained unclear. Since 1996, Duke engineer Adrian Bejan's seminal contributions have renewed and clarified the engineering thermodynamics of the Carnot tradition. In his engineering thermodynamics, Bejan opens us to an understanding of the nature and evolution of the structures and functions of reality. In the mechanistic, analytic thermodynamics both the nature and evolution of reality had been represented as largely chance-governed and tending to a maximum entropic disorganization. Bejan stresses that in the engineering thermodynamic worldview practicing engineers are participants, in the irreversible, constructive evolution of the organizational design of reality. This essay reports my investigation into Bejan's Constructal insight, my attempt to understand it in the context of the philosophical and historical foundations of engineering thermodynamics and the engineering worldview.

Abstract:Based on Thermodynamics and its well-established First and Second Laws, this work presents and explores their economics counterparts, introducing new concepts, variables, and equations. This includes, among others, the economic counterparts of temperature, reversibility and irreversibility, and entropy and entropy generation resulting from economic irreversibility. The meaning of the new concepts, variables, equations, and their messages are introduced and discussed considering simple yet relevant economic processes. The economic counterparts of the First and Second Law balance equations are set in addition to the base concepts and Laws. These are effective and valuable tools for the analysis of economic processes. Observations from selected economic activities are analyzed using the new concepts, variables, and equations.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, to make clear (and de-mystify) the basic concepts of classical thermodynamics, and thus to enable the integration of thermodynamics within systems modeling and control. Second, to demonstrate that systems and control theory provides a natural context for the formulation and understanding of classical thermodynamics. This is not so surprising since classical thermodynamics, firmly rooted in engineering with questions such as the maximal efficiency of steam engines, deals from the very start with systems in interaction with their surrounding (by heat flow, mechanical work, flow of matter, etc.). In particular, it will be shown that dissipativity theory is key in the formulation and interpretation of the First and Second Law of thermodynamics. Also a geometric view on the state properties and the dynamics of thermodynamic systems will be emphasized, thereby unifying and simplifying different representations of thermodynamic systems. On the other hand, I will also argue that thermodynamics motivates paradigm shifts within systems and control; in particular, the use of non-minimal state space formulations, and a geometric view on them. Furthermore, while systems and control theory has been primarily based on linear systems with quadratic cost criteria, in line with basic system models in electrical and mechanical engineering (RLC-circuits, mass-spring-damper systems, etc.), thermodynamics necessitates to go beyond this linear-quadratic paradigm.

Abstract:We report on several specific student difficulties regarding the Second Law of Thermodynamics in the context of heat engines within upper-division undergraduates thermal physics courses. Data come from ungraded written surveys, graded homework assignments, and videotaped classroom observations of tutorial activities. Written data show that students in these courses do not clearly articulate the connection between the Carnot cycle and the Second Law after lecture instruction. This result is consistent both within and across student populations. Observation data provide evidence for myriad difficulties related to entropy and heat engines, including students' struggles in reasoning about situations that are physically impossible and failures to differentiate between differential and net changes of state properties of a system. Results herein may be seen as the application of previously documented difficulties in the context of heat engines, but others are novel and emphasize the subtle and complex nature of cyclic processes and heat engines, which are central to the teaching and learning of thermodynamics and its applications. Moreover, the sophistication of these difficulties is indicative of the more advanced thinking required of students at the upper division, whose developing knowledge and understanding give rise to questions and struggles that are inaccessible to novices.

Investigating introductory and advanced students' difficulties with entropy and the second law of thermodynamics using a validated instrument

Abstract:We use the Survey of Thermodynamic Processes and First and Second Laws-Long (STPFaSL-Long), a research-based survey instrument with 78 items at the level of introductory physics, to investigate introductory and advanced students' difficulties with entropy and the second law of thermodynamics. We present analysis of data from 12 different introductory and advanced physics classes at four different higher education public institutions in the US in which the survey was administered in-person to more than 1000 students. We find that a widespread unproductive tendency for introductory students to associate the properties of entropy with those of energy leads to many errors based on an idea of "conservation of entropy," in which entropy increases are always balanced by equal entropy decreases. For many of the more advanced students (calculus-based and upper level), we detect a tendency to expect entropy increases even in processes in which the entropy does not change. We observed a widespread failure to correctly apply the relationship {\Delta}S = {\delta}Qreversible/T, either by using it for irreversible processes to which it does not apply, or by applying it incorrectly or completely neglecting it in reversible processes to which it does apply. We also noted that many introductory students are simply not aware that total entropy must increase in any "spontaneous" heat transfer process. Students at all levels were very frequently found to be confused that while net entropy (system + reservoir) in reversible isothermal processes does not change, the entropy of the working substance itself does indeed increase or decrease depending on whether the process is an expansion or compression. Our findings are broadly consistent with prior research findings in this area, expanding upon them and revealing previously unreported aspects of students' thinking.
