Abstract:With the development of science and technology,the scope of future war expands into outer space gradually.The space-based anti-satellite kinetic missile with the advantages of high accuracy,strong anti-interference,good mobility,light weight and small size,becomes one of the most important space weapons.It is a new concept weapon that launches from satellites or other spacecrafts,hits enemy satellite directly with high relative velocity,and destroys it by large kinetic energy.It can be considered as an extension of ammunition technologies on the space-based platform.By tracking the development of this kind of missile abroad,its system composition and principle are studied,and related key technologies,including launch and separation,space autonomous navigation,target detection and identification,accurate terminal guidance,etc.,are presented and analyzed.Some research foundation is established for following study on the anti-satellite kinetic missile.

China's ASAT Test: Motivations and Implications

Abstract:Abstract : China launched a direct-ascent ASAT weapon on January 11, 2007, which struck a Chinese FY-1 weather satellite in low Earth orbit (LEO). The ASAT's kinetic kill vehicle was likely boosted by a two-stage launcher based on a DF-21 medium-range ballistic missile, which may be mounted on a mobile launcher. China reportedly conducted several previous tests of the system; it is unclear if the same configuration was used for all the tests. The successful test demonstrates a Chinese capability to destroy a number of U.S. satellites in LEO used for reconnaissance, remote sensing, surveillance, electronic surveillance, and meteorology. The direct-ascent ASAT appears to be part of a larger Chinese ASAT program that includes ground-based lasers and jamming of satellite signals. People's Republic of China (PRC) analysts, scientists, and strategists have written extensively about ASAT weapons and potential means of countering U.S. military uses of space. The revelation by the director of the NRO that Chinese lasers have "painted" U.S. satellites indicates a capability to disrupt imaging satellites by dazzling or blinding them. Jamming can disrupt U.S. military communications and global positioning system (GPS) navigation and targeting signals. The exact performance characteristics of Chinese systems are unknown, but a range of ASAT capabilities would provide flexible options to temporarily or permanently deny U.S. space capabilities. The NDU's Institute for National Strategic Studies convened an unclassified roundtable to discuss the motivations and implications of China's direct-ascent ASAT weapons test. The roundtable was intended to highlight issues and perspectives that U.S. policy makers should consider in thinking about U.S. responses to the test. This report draws heavily on views expressed at the discussion, but the authors have added further analysis to provide a fuller explication of the relevant policy issues.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the maneuverability, capabilities, and survivability of Chinese DF-31 mobile missiles and the ability of a proposed U.S. Space Radar system to persistently track them. The author posits possible defense strategies for the Chinese military and concludes that the survivability of the mobile DF-31's is not guaranteed during a nuclear attack given the huge U.S. strategic arsenal, but also questions the ability of the proposed U.S. Space Radar system to persistently track the DF-31's if the Chinese military engages in relatively simple countermeasures. Neither China nor the United States can be completely confident of a strategic advantage. The two countries need strategic dialogues to improve relations on this topic.

Abstract:China has orbited a three-satellite constellation for space-based navigation known as Beidou. This article uses the constellation geometry, as determined by the NORAD space-surveillance system and publicly available from NASA, to estimate the accuracy available to a user of the Beidou system. Limited in terrestrial coverage to roughly the Asian subcontinent, this system requires a user either to go through an iterative procedure ill-suited to most military applications or to provide his or her own standard of time by carrying a high-precision clock. The iterative method does provide accuracies comparable to NAVSTAR/GPS over a restricted area of the Earth. Carrying an atomic clock, however, allows the system to be used in a mode that can provide sufficient accuracy to be used on MIRVed Chinese ICBMs en route to the United States and make a significant improvement in accuracy. Surprisingly, those modes of operation do not provide sufficient accuracy for most conventional military users.

Abstract:Understanding the motion of debris cloud produced by the anti-satellite test can help us to know the danger of these tests. This study presents the orbit status of 57 fragments observed by the CelesTrak and presented in the NORAD Two-Line Element Sets of India Anti-Satellite Test. There are 10 of these observed fragments have altitudes of the apogee larger than 1000.0km, the maximum one is 1725.7km. We also numerical calculated the number of debris, the results show that the number of debris with the diameter larger than 0.2m is 14, the number of debris with the diameter larger than 0.01m is 6587, and the number of debris with the diameter larger than 0.001m is 7.22e+5. The results of the secondary collision of the debris will produced more fragments in the space. The life time of the fragments depends on the initial orbit parameters and the sizes of the debris.

Abstract:The sensitivity of Chinese N-4 Type Emulsion is investigated. An approach to mechanism of latent image fading is reported. Nuclear emulsion tracks in Chinese satellite are analyzed. Several heavy nucleus tracks are identified and an event of heavy ion collision with a strangelet candidate is shown.

Abstract:The increasing space debris poses a great threat to in-orbit spacecraft and satellites, because its hypervelocity impact can bring about fatal mechanical and electrical damage to them. This work applies pulsed digital inline holography (DIH) to measure three-dimensional (3D) positions and shapes of the debris clouds generated by the hypervelocity impact in the Whipple shield. Detailed operation procedures of synchronizing the pulse DIH system with the impact event and removing the strong plasma radiation are presented, ensuring the successful capture of the transient state of ultrafast ejecta. Experiments on a 2.25 mm aluminum sphere impacting a 0.5 mm thickness aluminum target plate with a velocity of 3.6 km/s are carried out at the Hypervelocity Impact Research Center of the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, and results show that the holographic fringes are clearly recorded and the debris fragments are reconstructed and located accurately, agreeing well with the results measured by laser shadowgraph. This work demonstrates the powerful capability and great potential of DIH in the diagnostics of hypervelocity impact.

Abstract:On March 27, 2019, India tested its first anti-satellite (ASAT) missile against its own "live" satellite, Microsat-R, launched on 24 January, 2019, as part of "Mission Shakti". The test parameters were chosen with extreme caution to minimize the hazard of post-impact debris predicted to re-enter the earth`s atmosphere within 45 days. Of the 400 pieces of debris identified by NASA, more than 60 were large enough to be tracked by the US Air Force`s Space Surveillance Network and US Strategic Command`s Combined Space Operations Center. Much of the information provided in the press about the ASAT missile and Microsat-R was inaccurate or misleading and did not appear to be based on scientific analysis of the data available to the public. To better understand the circumstances of this event, this paper will calculated and present detailed analysis of the tracked post-impact orbit debris from Microsat-R. All results in the current paper are based on orbital data, in the form of the NORAD two-line element (TLE) dataset from <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://space-track.org" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and the own calculations of the CoLiTec group.

Abstract:Half of the risk to any satellite is from debris collision. The main body of the satellite, housing the main electronics is encapsulated by bulletproof outer layers but most satellites include solar panels as the only energy source and they cannot be covered with multiple kevlar layers or any safety material. As space junk keeps on increasing, we seek to mitigate the tragedies related to it. Every collision in turn creates many new space junk particles which drives a positive feedback chain reaction, which could ultimately lead to a phenomenon known as “Kessler Syndrome”[1], which can render whole space unusable altogether. Several private companies like “LEO-Space” and government agencies are working to help solve this issue, yet some countries perform anti-satellite operations for military purposes each of which creates more than tens of thousands of pieces greater than 0.5 centimetres (that cannot be stopped by layers of protective material) traveling at relative speeds of up to 12km/sec on an average(which usually stay in their orbits for more than 100 years, depending on their altitudes and orbit). China (in 2007), the USA (in 2009), India (in 2019), and Russia (in 2021) have performed these so-called “tests” in the orbits of the altitude of the international space station creating countless debris of various sizes that would stay as a threat in most used orbit i.e. LEO(roughly 160km to 2000km above the earth’s surface).

Abstract:The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracking of the SpaceX Starlink satellite launch on February 03, 2022 is reviewed. Of the 49 Starlink satellites released into orbit, 38 were eventually lost. Thirty-two of the satellites were never tracked by NORAD. There have been three articles written proposing physical mechanisms to explain the satellite losses. It is argued that none of the proposed mechanisms can explain the immediate loss of 32 of the 49 satellites. The non-availability of telemetry data from the lost satellites has hindered the search for a physical mechanism to explain the density increase observed in a short time interval.

At the same time, the chip industry has gradually become the main battlefield for the United States to suppress and curb China's scientific and technological fields. Whereas chips are an essential part of modern military equipment, communications facilities, nuclear power plants, transport systems and other critical infrastructure. Early mastery of the core chip technology can be early not to be constrained by others, to avoid the risk of being "necked".This paper will analyse the reasons why China makes the US feel that its national security is threatened, the impact of the US-China trade friction on China's science and technology sector, and find out the measures that China can take to deal with the US sanctions related to the science and technology sector, as well as the right way for China to get along with the US.
Building Small-Satellites to Live Through the Kessler Effect

Abstract:The rapid advancement and miniaturization of spacecraft electronics, sensors, actuators, and power systems have resulted in growing proliferation of small-spacecraft. Coupled with this is the growing number of rocket launches, with left-over debris marking their trail. The space debris problem has also been compounded by test of several satellite killer missiles that have left large remnant debris fields. In this paper, we assume a future in which the Kessler Effect has taken hold and analyze the implications on the design of small-satellites and CubeSats. We use a multiprong approach of surveying the latest technologies, including the ability to sense space debris in orbit, perform obstacle avoidance, have sufficient shielding to take on small impacts and other techniques to mitigate the problem. Detecting and tracking space debris threats on-orbit is expected to be an important approach and we will analyze the latest vision algorithms to perform the detection, followed by quick reaction control systems to perform the avoidance. Alternately there may be scenarios where the debris is too small to track and avoid. In this case, the spacecraft will need passive mitigation measures to survive the impact. Based on these conditions, we develop a strawman design of a small spacecraft to mitigate these challenges. Based upon this study, we identify if there is sufficient present-day COTS technology to mitigate or shield satellites from the problem. We conclude by outlining technology pathways that need to be advanced now to best prepare ourselves for the worst-case eventuality of Kessler Effect taking hold in the upper altitudes of Low Earth Orbit.

Abstract:Attitude is the important parameter for active debris removal and collision avoidance. This paper deduced the spin axis orientation and spin period of the rocket body, CZ-3B R/B (NORAD ID 38253), using the satellite laser ranging and light curve data measured with single-photon detector at Graz station. The epoch method and LC & SLR residuals fitting were combined to determine these values. The derived right ascension angle was around 220°, the declination angle was near 64° and the sidereal period was calculated to be 117.724 s, for 2017-07-03. The results derived from the two distinct methods were mutually validated. Rocket bodies are a major contributor to space debris and this work provides a reference for attitude determination and attitude modelling.

Abstract:Space debris is a major threat to the satellite infrastructure. A collision with even small particle, e.g. 1 cm of size, can cause a catastrophic event when the parent body, spacecraft or upper stage, will break up into hundreds of trackable fragments. Space debris research helps to discover, monitor and characterize these objects, identify their origin and support their active removal. Surveys with optical telescopes aim to discover new objects for cataloguing and to increase the accuracy of space debris population models. The follow-up observations are performed to improve their orbits or to investigate their physical characteristics. We will present the space debris population, its orbital and physical characteristics and we will discuss the role which the optical telescopes play in space debris research. We will also discuss the adopted astronomical techniques like astrometry, photometry and spectroscopy used in the space debris domain.

Abstract:China and the United States have developed a complex relationship. Facing common threats such as missile proliferation and regional instability, they tend to collaborate for mutual benefit. However, the two countries have hedged against each other for their respective national interests, often acting so as to reinforce each other's negative security perceptions. Their security dynamism in missile defense and antisatellite (ASAT) operations has furthered their mutual distrust. This article addresses their security dilemmas by suggesting that China and the United States take a more trusting view of each other's missile defense program, whether at the research and development stage or at deployment. They must develop such systems in an approach of mutual reassurance, allowing a degree of reciprocal vulnerability in order to avoid an arms race. An interim partial space security arrangement is also proposed here, namely, a limited ASAT ban for satellite security in outer space, to soothe respective security concerns and meet each country's present need.

Abstract:On 4 February 2022, 38 Starlink satellites were destroyed by the geomagnetic storm, which brought significant financial, aerospace and public influences. In this letter, we reveal the space weather process during 3–4 February 2022 geomagnetic disturbances, from the Sun all the way to the satellite orbiting atmosphere. Initiated by an M1.0 class flare and the following coronal mass ejection (CME), a moderate geomagnetic storm was stimulated on 3rd February by the CME arrival at Earth. Subsequently, another moderate storm was triggered on 4th February by the passage of another CME. Model simulations driven by solar wind show that the first geomagnetic storm induced around 20% atmospheric density perturbations at 210 km altitude on 3rd February. The unexpected subsequent storm on 4th February led to a density enhancement of around 20%–30% at around 210 km. The resulting atmospheric drag can be even larger, since the regional density enhancement was over 60% and the satellite orbits were continuously decaying. This event brings forth the urgent requirements of better understanding and accurate prediction of the space weather as well as collaborations between industry and space weather community.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the penetration effect of harpoons on space debris to ensure the sustainable development of the space environment and solve the increasingly serious space debris problem. Firstly, a harpoon system was designed to capture space debris. Secondly, based on the Johnson–Cook dynamic constitutive model and fracture failure criterion, the finite element models of aluminum alloy plates were established. Then, the ballistic limit theory for the aluminum alloy target predicted the minimum launch velocity of the harpoon. Finally, the validation experiment was set up to verify the correctness of the model. The results show that the error between the simulation results of the speed for the harpoon embedded in the target and the theoretical results of the ballistic limit is 9.1%, which provides guidance for active space debris removal technology.
