Abstract:Reflection on and criticism of enlightenment reason is an indispensable part of the Enlightenment itself. It is an important counterbalance to the Enlightenment myth and the crisis of modernity, as well as being a major theoretical subject for political philosophy in the age of globalization. This reflection and criticism must be grasped and examined from both the external perspective of socio-historical requirements and the internal perspective of intellectual history. While giving full credit to the achievements of Enlightenment reason and modernity, we need to review their inherent conflicts, reveal the resultant social crisis, and sort out, reflect on and reference postmodernism's denunciation of Enlightenment reason and the crisis of modernity in order to provide a more far-reaching solution to these issues. Marx turned the critique of Enlightenment reason and modernity into a critical reconstruction of the logic of capital and the capitalist mode of production, seeing the resolution of these evils as lying in transcendence of capitalist private ownership. In this way, he brought the critique of Enlightenment reason to a climax and showed modern society a way to more advanced development.

This revised edition reflects changes based on further comparisons with eighteenth-century texts and an extensive reworking of the index.

Abstract:This paper presents an approach to the thoughts and characteristics of Adam Smith's ethics, who's more often regarded as"The Father of Economics".By comparing the ethics thoughts of Adam Smith,predecessors and other men of his age,the author concludes that Smith's points were apparently different from those of Hobbes,Mandeville,Hutchinson and Hume in the following three basic issues:"the nature of virtue","the ground of moral judgment"and"the basic method to study moral philosophy". Smith's ethics oriented from"sympathy",developed to"virtue"and finally formed a complete ideological system of which the core is"propriety".His virtue theory,conscience theory,justice theory and utility theory were all strictly built on the basis of"sympathy",which is the characteristic and value of his ethics system.It is indicated that exploring his moral theory features will help to recognize Smith's special importance in the Scottish Enlightenment thinkers and to comprehend his present-day values.

Abstract:As an important pioneering figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, Hutcheson exhibited his particular Enlightenment attributes regarding ideas of the science of man by questioning the Calvinist notion of human nature and replacing Christian original sin with Stoic spiritual virtue. Hutcheson emphasized the spontaneous effect of human senses and the basis of morality beyond rationality and advocated empirical approaches in observing and enquiring into the nature of man, elaborating on the human psychological mechanism comprising internal sense, moral sense, public sense and sense of honor as well as its relation with human behavior. He pointed out that the senses and desires in human constitution enabled people to be unselfishly concerned about the happiness of others and welfare of society while attending to their own interests and that natural law was but the behavioral codes in general concluded from the observation of human nature. The theories of the science of man proposed by Hutcheson proved to be the burgeoning of the human science of the Scottish Enlightenment.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to explore the interconnections between Hume's thought as a philosopher, a historian and an economist, illustrated with respect to his thought on history, development and happiness. It is argued that differences in the interpretation of Hume have an epistemological origin, reflecting either a closed-system approach or some kind of open-system approach. These differences are explored in relation to Hume's own epistemology, historiography, theory of economic development and theory of happiness. Patterns are identified in Hume's thought which support a particular, open-system, interpretation of his contributions in each area in terms of interdependent processes.

Abstract:This article reveals the fundamental meaning of the concept of Enlightenment from nine aspects, and thus points out that Enlightenment is still a task not yet completed. Since the modern, the obstacles to reason have been transformed from external shackles into internal constraints: human’s freedom formerly was based on the premise of invariable human nature, but in the circumstances of variability of human nature, relating to reason, freedom opens out a whole new meaning. Having courage or being free to use your own understanding does not signify some particular use of reason, but its general use. All of possible forms and modes of reason are ways and means of continual transcendence of thought. The spirit of Enlightenment is just the principle of full spreading of a reason.

Abstract:The last few decades have witnessed intense debates in Hume scholarship concerning Hume’s account of causation. At the core of the “old–new Hume” debate is the question of whether causation for Hume is more than mere regularity, in particular, whether Hume countenances necessary connections in mind-independent nature. This chapter assesses this debate against the background of Hume’s “foundational project” in the Treatise. The question of the role and import of Hume’s account of the idea of cause is examined and compared with Hume’s treatment of other ideas. David Hume introduces his “foundational project” in his first philosophical work, the Treatise, and it is in this text that he articulates the project most fully and carries it out most deliberately. Against the background of Hume’s foundational project, New Humeans are right that Hume’s examination of ideas is not meant to provide metaphysical accounts of the nature of reality. The traditional reading takes Hume’s account of our idea of cause to yield the metaphysical conclusion that all that causation amounts to in a mind-independent world is constant conjunction or mere regularity. The step or inference from Hume’s account of the idea of ‘cause’ to the metaphysical, regularity theory is supported by a certain theory of meaning. The idea of causation is not just fundamental to all science and philosophy; it also plays an essential role within Hume’s own system.

Abstract:This paper interprets the interaction between Protestantism and commercial spirit in David Hume's account of English development, mostly drawing from The History of England. Hume saw Protestant theology—especially the more enthusiastic strains of English Puritanism—as having fortuitously shifted the landscape of political and economic sensibilities in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by affecting believers' political, social, and economic psychologies. Those shifting psychologies exhibited affinities with concurrent developments, especially the decline of feudalism, the rise of consumerism, and the creation of an independent middle class of merchants. The peculiar synergy between such changes and Protestant theological innovations led to the emergence of England, by the eighteenth century, as a polite and commercial people—a people for whom commerce became, Hume claimed, more honorable than in any other nation. Hume, like Max Weber, saw a distinctive Protestant spirit as having contributed to the modern commercial order.

Abstract:This paper addresses three fundamental features of John Locke's educational philosophy, crucial to understanding the philosophical underpinnings of Locke's theory of education and the conduct of the understanding. These three features are 1) intimate connection between education and epistemology, 2) role of sensory faculties in the attainment of knowledge, and 3) the nature of ideas. In the first section, I will examine Locke's conception of epistemology and its relation to his theory of education. Being more akin to the corpuscularian view of reality, Locke believes that one should not bother about the knowledge of those things for which one is not capable due to the limits of one's sensory capacities. The second section is devoted to explaining those factors mentioned by Locke in his educational writings, which are crucial to understanding the conduct of understanding and play an important role in a child's mental development. Such as thinking habits, ideas as an object of understanding, the flexibility of mind, history, culture, language, and morality. The third section aims to clarify the meaning and nature of ideas as they are the cornerstone of Locke's epistemology which is intimately connected to his educational philosophy. Being an empiricist philosopher, he reduces man to an experiential plane of life and believes that education aims not to know all things except those that affect our conduct.

Abstract:With Kant's enlightening maxims as the starting point, the author analyses the complicated relationship between enlightenment and reason, reason and rationalism, and reaches the following conclusion: when reason is defined as a kind of rationalism, enlightenment is separated from this very rationalism. Thus, it is not that enlightenment does not need rationalism but that rationalism confines itself and hinders the development of enlightenment.

Abstract:This work is a critical exposition of the core aspects of Hume’s empiricist epistemological views. The epistemological problem of the origin, scope and certainty of knowledge was a subject of fierce debate between the Continental Rationalists and the British Empiricists. While the rationalists argued for the supremacy of reason, the empiricists stood for experience. As an empiricist Hume believed that certain knowledge is only gained through experience which consists of sensations, emotions and passions. Hume reduced the contents of the mind to perception which he divided into impressions and ideas. He also copiously addressed the idea of causality questioning the impressions that provide one with such an idea. This work employing the critical and expository methods surveyed the key points in Hume’s discussion on perception and the association of ideas as well as Hume’s analysis of the idea of causality. It gave a background of the empiricists project before presenting his epistemological theory of perception. The work further treated Hume’s position with regard to the association of ideas and his analysis of causality. In the area of causality, the work critically looked at Hume’s consideration of temporal succession, contiguity and necessary connection. In conclusion the work praised Hume’s courageous, rigorous and consistent empiricist stance whose intensity led to a skeptic logical conclusion which is a necessary “antidote to dogmatism and fanaticism.”Key Words: Causality, Empiricism, Ideas, Impression, Perception

Abstract:Kant's conception of the Enlightenment, contrary to Mendelssohn's, cannot be limited or constrained by designating a special sphere where 'enlightened' claims are applicable and another special sphere where 'enlightened' claims are not applicable. In contrast to some of the literature, I show that no single domain concerning human affairs is beyond Kant's conception of the Enlightenment to the extent that no single domain is outside of reason. I show this to be the case by looking, first, at Mendelssohn's conception of Enlightenment and its links to his understanding of moral progress and conscience. Because 'Enlightenment' designates the correct use of one's own theoretical faculties, it is the task of formation ( Bildung) to prevent the Enlightenment from extending beyond its legitimate domain. Thus, for Mendelssohn, the sphere of formation stands in stark opposition to the sphere of Enlightenment. I then look at Kant's response to the question of what Enlightenment is and show that his deceptively simple answer is in fact underpinned, on the one hand, by a rather complex account of reason's universality, public nature and communicability and, on the other hand, by a complex account of reason's historical development. Kant's conception of Enlightenment, unlike Mendelssohn's, does not stand in opposition to a practical sphere insofar as Enlightenment designates the process of breaking away from immaturity ( Unmündigkeit), a process the scope of which is necessarily unlimited.

Abstract:This paper attempts to trace the evolution of reason to reveal the specific features of reason’s unfolding.Review and reflection of the reason’s process focus on ideas as well as the real things sufficient to form such ideas.The unfolding of reason and their main parts consist of several processes,which could occur dispersedly in different periods and regions.This paper shows that:by reviewing previous ideas about man and nature referring to the corresponding universal concept of the Enlightenment in Europe,we will find that the idea of nature was at the outset,unfolded in its universal form in ancient Greek,and the idea of universal human has been gradually formed in the eighteenth century in Europe,while the pre-Qin thinkers in China had definitely made out the thought of universal human being,even though they lacked universal reflection and metaphysical exploration of nature and its law.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to explicate the theological and epistemological elements of John Locke's moral philosophy as presented in the ‘Essay Concerning Human Understanding’ and ‘The Reasonableness of Christianity’. Many detractors hold that Locke's moral philosophy is internally inconsistent due to his seeming commitment to both the intellectualist position that divinely instituted morality admits of pure rational demonstration and the competing voluntarist claim that we must rely for our moral knowledge upon divine revelation. In this paper I argue that Locke is guilty of no such contradiction. In doing so, I attempt to accommodate Locke's position in the ‘Essay’ that moral principles are demonstrable a priori with his views on the sanctity of Christian revelation. I then consider Locke's conception of moral ideas as a species of mixed modes, or arbitrarily constructed complex ideas, and attempt to navigate the mechanism whereby human understanding can recognize these ideas as conforming to, or straying from, divinely appointed natural law. I conclude that despite Locke's failure to actually provide a full-fledged moral theory, he lays a rationally coherent groundwork for the fulfilment of such a project that accommodates a-priori rational reflection and divine revelation as complementary paths to moral understanding.
