Abstract:Studies investigating field independence‐dependence and reading are reviewed. A meta‐analysis of 25 correlational studies revealed a moderate relationship which indicated that field independent children tend to be more efficient readers than field dependent children. Additional research showed that some measures of field dependence are successful in identifying good and poor readers at beginning stages of learning to read, and that field dependent children are likely to develop more severe reading problems. It was suggested that the influence of field independence‐dependence is greatest during the initial acquisition of many reading skills. Some possible instructional implications of the research are discussed.
