Abstract:Efficient clean energy harvesting, conversion, and storage technologies are of immense importance for the sustainable development of human society. To this end, scientists have made significant advances in recent years regarding new materials and devices for improving the energy conversion efficiency for photovoltaics, thermoelectric generation, photoelectrochemical/electrolytic hydrogen generation, and rechargeable metal ion batteries. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a platform for research scientists and engineers in these areas to demonstrate and exchange their latest research findings. This thematic topic undoubtedly represents an extremely important technological direction, covering materials processing, characterization, simulation, and performance evaluation of thin films used in energy harvesting, conversion, and storage.

Abstract:Modern societies thrive on an unprecedented level of energy consumption, which places a tremendous amount of stress on our environment.Indeed, energy renewability and environmental sustainability stand to be some of the most pressing challenges of our time.Continuous efforts have been devoted to the development of renewable alternative energies, particularly via environmentally friendly green synthesis methods, in order to address these two critically important and interconnected issues.This special issue to be published in 2017 aims at reporting recent progresses in renewable energies and green synthesis method.We have selected seven papers, representing three different technical frontiers of this topic: three on photovoltaics for solar energy conversion, two on sensor materials, and two on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Energy generation and preservation are significant difficulties that can be met using fuel cells, solar cells, and batteries. Micro- and nanomaterials with exciting chemical and physical characteristics offer a new avenue for addressing these issues. Nanostructured materials (NSMs) have attracted more attention due to their excellent electrical, optical, and thermal properties. In this paper, the innovative research on the synthesis, development, and classification of NSMs for various applications has been reviewed comprehensively. Furthermore, highlights the most recent research status on the structure and properties of NSMs and concludes the prospects and future difficulties in this area.

Abstract:The application of electric energy has profoundly transformed human civilization, and driven the development of modern society.The increasing number of electrical equipment has led to an extraordinary increase in demand for electricity.Concurrently, clean and sustainable methods to produce and use electricity are urgently needed to alleviate further damage to the Earth's climate from legacy energy sources.These necessities have spurred significant research in energy conversion, storage, and conservation, and great progress has been achieved in both fundamental research and application exploration.On the other hand, numerous new challenges remain in a variety of key areas, including effective and safe electrical energy storage, efficient production of electrical energy, convenient transmission of electrical energy, optimization of output under limited electrical energy use, and the transition away from carbon-based energy generation.The progress of energy research is inseparable from the support of development of materials.Nanomaterials, in particular, possess intriguing promise in the field of energy research because of the appealing advantages carried by their size.Some of these advantages include their high specific surface area, unique surface properties, high capacity for energy storage, and high energy conversion efficiency.Nanomaterials bridge between electrical, chemical, thermal, mechanical, and solar energies, thereby rendering humans with the ability to obtain and capitalize on electrical energy more efficiently and sustainably.Nanomaterials and nanotechnology have become one of the basic foundations of energy research.Consequently, nanomaterials and nanotechnology for energy have formed a dynamic new field that is constantly receiving more attention.

Advanced Sustainable Systems

Abstract:This article delineates the state of the art for several materials used in the harvest, conversion, and storage of energy, and analyzes the challenges to be overcome in the decade ahead for them to reach the market and benefit society. The materials covered have had a special interest in recent years and include perovskites, materials for batteries and supercapacitors, graphene, and materials for hydrogen production and storage. Looking at the common challenges for these different systems, scientists in basic research should carefully consider commercial requirements when designing new materials. These include cost and ease of synthesis, abundance of precursors, recyclability of spent devices, toxicity, and stability. Improvements in these areas deserve more attention, as they can help bridge the gap for these technologies and facilitate the creation of partnerships between academia and industry. These improvements should be pursued in parallel with the design of novel compositions, nanostructures, and devices, which have led most interest during the past decade. Research groups are encouraged to adopt a cross‐disciplinary mindset, which may allow more efficient use of existing knowledge and facilitate breakthrough innovation in both basic and applied research of energy‐related materials. A selection of materials is surveyed that could soon revolutionize how energy is transformed and stored. For each material, a brief account is provided on past key advances and the current state of the art. The research challenges that remain for these materials to reach commercialization are then discussed and views on how to address them are given.

Abstract:This study explores the domain of developing material categories for the purpose of sustainable energy storage, with the objective of addressing the constraints inherent in existing technologies and facilitating the development of inventive resolutions. The research examines the potential of nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), polymers, and two-dimensional (2D) materials as a means to overcome the obstacles presented by current energy storage systems. This study investigates the qualities and potential of various materials, examining them in conjunction with a range of thorough characterization techniques. These approaches include electrochemical analysis, structural methodologies, nanoscale observations, and computer modelling. In the next analysis, this study will examine the future direction of research on energy storage materials, including prospective advancements and the critical obstacles related to scalability, cost-efficiency, and integration within energy systems. In general, this investigation highlights the significant impact of new materials on the development of a more environmentally friendly energy infrastructure. The present study focuses on the investigation of emerging materials for sustainable energy storage. Specifically, the research explores the potential of nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, polymers, and two-dimensional materials in this context. By examining the properties and characteristics of these materials, this study aims to contribute to the understanding and development of efficient and environmentally friendly energy storage solutions.

Abstract:This review paper investigates the synthesis and energy applications of the new materials of MXenes and carbon dots in a nanocomposite form. MXenes are relatively new to the world of science and has a lot of interesting properties that endears them to researchers. Carbon dots are also of interest in recent times due to unique and exciting properties such as biocompatibility, inertness, and low toxicity. The choice of these two materials is due to the inherent flexibility involved in their surface groups which makes them excellent materials that can be machined for some required properties. Both MXene and carbon dots could either be hydrophilic or hydrophobic, mechanically, thermally and chemically stable and exhibit large surface area and great electrical conductivity. Their nanocomposite materials are envisaged to be enhanced in these properties. The composite formation of the carbon dots with MXenes using their functional groups is an interesting property for energy purposes. Energy conversion and storage has been a hot topic and changes in lifestyle emphasizes the need for portable electronics and other materials or gadgets. On that note, MXene-Carbon dots nanocomposites could be materials of choice as electrocatalysts in fuel cells, electrode materials in metal-ion batteries, supercapacitors, photovoltaic cells, photodetectors to name but a few. This material of interest (MXene‑carbon dots) will no doubt demonstrate higher efficiency and great durability compared to other investigated materials.

Abstract:The utilization of renewable energy is the ultimate way to meet the increasing energy demands of our modern society. The efficient storage and utilization of the energy in different ways are the current hot topics in the research community. Among them, the solar water splitting, photocatalysis, and lithium–sulfur batteries are with great application promise. The research will provide strategies for the production, storage, and application of energy for industry.This special issue focuses on "Challenges and Possibilities of Energy Storage". Abstract:The decreasing cost of electricity worldwide from wind and solar energy, as well as that of end-use technologies such as electric vehicles, reflect substantial progress made toward replacing fossil fuels with alternative energy sources. But a full transition to clean energy can only be realized if numerous challenges are overcome. Many problems can be addressed through the discovery of new materials that improve the efficiency of energy production and consumption; reduce the need for scarce mineral resources; and support the production of green hydrogen, clean ammonia, and carbon-neutral hydrocarbon fuels. However, research and development of new energy materials are not as aggressive as they should be to meet the demands of climate change.

Abstract:<p>Electrochemical energy storage (EES) plays a critical role in tackling climate change and the energy crisis, unfortunately it faces several challenges. Unlike conventional electrode materials which are gradually approaching their capacity limit, the emerging atomically thin 2D materials can potentially open up various new possibilities for design and fabrication of novel EES devices. The studies in this area to date have laid the groundwork in understanding fundamental physics and chemistry of 2D materials, enabling a toolbox of engineering strategies to be used to improve the EES performance. This report reviews recent progress in engineering 2D materials for EES applications. Both theoretical and experimental investigations in this area are summarized, and pathways toward improved EES performance and their novel applications are highlighted based on appropriate integration of promising strategies such as the surface activation, chemical doping, phase engineering, and hybrid structures.</p>
