Abstract:Biodegradable magnesium alloys are advantageous in various implant applications, as they reduce the risks associated with permanent metallic implants. However, a rapid corrosion rate is usually a hindrance in biomedical applications. Here we report a facile two step procedure to introduce multifunctional, anti-corrosive coatings on Mg alloys, such as AZ31. The first step involves treating the NaOH-activated Mg with bistriethoxysilylethane to immobilize a layer of densely crosslinked silane coating with good corrosion resistance; the second step is to impart amine functionality to the surface by treating the modified Mg with 3-amino-propyltrimethoxysilane. We characterized the two-layer anticorrosive coating of Mg alloy AZ31 by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, static contact angle measurement and optical profilometry, potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance measurements. Furthermore, heparin was covalently conjugated onto the silane-treated AZ31 to render the coating haemocompatible, as demonstrated by reduced platelet adhesion on the heparinized surface. The method reported here is also applicable to the preparation of other types of biofunctional, anti-corrosive coatings and thus of significant interest in biodegradable implant applications.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the potential of an exclusive hybrid coating, based on a silane network, which was developed by sol-gel technique and embedded with nano ZnO to protect the corrosion of an AZ31 magnesium alloy intended for use as biodegradable implants. The coated substrates were subjected to various characterization techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDS) analysis, and contact angle measurements. The corrosion resistance of applied coatings were evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in a PBS solution at physiological temperatures. The chemical composition of the coatings was examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was carried out to examine the surface topography of the alloy after the polarization test. The results revealed that these coatings significantly improved the anti-corrosion behavior of AZ31 alloy. It was observed that a mixture of silanes offered superior corrosion protection performance owing to the development of a dense cross-linked layer that developed at the interface between the coating and the substrate. The existence of ZnO nanoparticles further enhanced the protective barrier characteristics of the coatings. The outcomes offer a novel approach to the design of hybrid silane coatings with suitable corrosion resistance for biodegradable Mg alloys used as implants.

Abstract:Orthopaedic implants often make use of magnesium and its alloys. These alloys are more mechanically compatible with bone tissue than other alloys, such as titanium, cobalt, and nickel, but a loss of implant mechanical strength can occur due to their low corrosion resistance. The plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method was used to modify the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy in this study. The effects of varying concentrations of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles (1, 3, and 5 g/l) on the morphology and corrosion characteristics of coatings were examined using phosphate-based electrolytes. The elemental composition was determined using Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), elemental map analysis (MAP) and phase X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Field emission-SEM was employed to investigate the surface morphology and cross-section of the coatings. The corrosion characteristics of all samples were evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) in Ringer's solution. The sample with 3 g/l HA showed the best anti-corrosion performance, as it had the smallest average pore size (8.7 μm), the thickest coating (22.5 μm) and the lowest corrosion current density (0.034 μA/cm 2 ) among all the samples tested.

Abstract:Mg alloys can be used as bioresorsable metallic implants. However, the high corrosion rate of magnesium alloys has limited their biomedical applications. Although Mg ions are essential to the human body, an excess may cause undesirable health effects. Therefore, surface treatments are required to enhance the corrosion resistance of magnesium parts, decreasing its rate to biocompatible levels and allowing its safe application as bioresorbable metallic implants. The application of biocompatible silane coatings is envisaged as a suitable strategy for retarding the corrosion process of magnesium alloys. In the current work, a new glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) based coating was tested on AZ31 magnesium substrates subjected to different surface conditioning procedures before coating deposition. The surface conditioning included a short etching with hydrofluoric acid (HF) or a dc polarisation in alkaline electrolyte. The silane coated samples were immersed in Hank's solution and the protective performance of the coating was studied through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS data was treated by new equivalent circuit models and the results revealed that the surface conditioning process plays a key role in the effectiveness of the silane coating. The HF treated samples led to the highest impedance values and delayed the coating degradation, compared to the mechanically polished samples or to those submitted to dc polarisation.

Abstract:This study was aimed to improve of the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of Mg/15TiO2/5HA nanocomposite by silicon and magnesium oxide coatings prepared using a powder metallurgy method. The phase evolution, chemical composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of uncoated and coated samples were characterized. Electrochemical and immersion tests used to investigate the in vitro corrosion behavior of the fabricated samples. The adhesion strength of ~36MPa for MgO and ~32MPa for Si/MgO coatings to substrate was measured by adhesion test. Fabrication a homogenous double layer coating with uniform thicknesses consisting micro-sized particles of Si as outer layer and flake-like particles of MgO as the inner layer on the surface of Mg/15TiO2/5HA nanocomposite caused the corrosion resistance and ductility increased whereas the ultimate compressive stress decreased. However, after immersion in SBF solution, Si/MgO-coated sample indicates the best mechanical properties compared to those of the uncoated and MgO-coated samples. The increase of cell viability percentage of the normal human osteoblast (NHOst) cells indicates the improvement in biocompatibility of Mg/15TiO2/5HA nanocomposite by Si/MgO coating.

Abstract:The biodegradability of magnesium (Mg) metal implants necessitates surface modification to mitigate the high corrosion rate in the body's physiological environment. This study focuses on synthesizing and applying a nanocomposite coating of polydimethylsiloxane-nanosized bioactive glass (PDMS-nBG) on the surface of a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-modified AZ91 Mg alloy. The PDMS-1 wt% nBG nanocomposite coating was deposited on the PEO-treated substrate using the dip-coating method. Surface and cross-sectional morphologies of the nanocomposite coatings were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Corrosion behavior of the AZ91 substrate, PEO coating, and double-layer PEO/PDMS-nBG coating was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) tests. Results showed that the corrosion resistance and corrosion current density of Mg substrates increased and decreased from 4815 Ω.cm 2 and 8.96 μA.cm − 2 to 18 MΩ.cm 2 and 0.00016 μA.cm − 2 for AZ91 and PEO/PDMS-nBG coating, respectively. Additionally, the morphology and adhesion of cultured human mesenchymal cells on the PEO-modified AZ91 substrates with a single PDMS polymer coating and a PDMS-nBG nanocomposite coating were investigated using fluorescent light microscopy and FESEM. The PEO/PDMS-nBG bilayer coating effectively addressed the limitations of magnesium alloys and holds potential for biomedical applications, particularly in orthopedic implants, due to the enhanced biocompatibility and bioactivity of Mg alloys.

Abstract:Magnesium and its alloys have been introduced as innovative orthopedic implants due to their potential in serving lightweight, bio-active, degradable, and biocompatible properties. Mg and its alloys corrode rapidly in a biological environment and result in losing mechanical properties. However, to enhance corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, Mg alloy was plasma-sprayed with pure hydroxyapatite (HA) and HA-reinforced with strontium (Sr) powder at three levels (4, 8, and 12 wt.%). Surface parameters such as microhardness, surface roughness, and wettability were examined. The electrochemical technique was used to study the corrosion behavior in Ringer's solution. The outcomes confirmed that with the rise in Sr content in pure HA coatings, the surface properties as well as the corrosion resistance improved significantly. The contact angle of substrates under examination exhibits hydrophilic nature. Collectively, the findings of this study signify HA/Sr reinforced coatings are a promising approach to improve surface properties and corrosion behavior of Mg alloys for future bone implant applications.

Abstract:In the present article, mesoporous SiO2/hydroxyapatite (HA) composite particles were produced via employing CTAB as a template, and then co-electrodeposited on Nitinol biomedical alloy with HA. Characterization results showed the formation of about 200 nm spheres with numerous plate-like particles and slit-shaped pores. The composite coatings were applied by using different concentrations of particles in the deposition electrolyte (500, 750, 1000, and 1250 mg/L). Morphological observations revealed that with an increase in particle concentration, the film exhibited greater compactness, leading to the formation of particle agglomerates in certain regions. This was further proved by the atomic force microscopy analysis where the porosity of the layers decreased, and the roughness diminished by raising particle concentration. This made composite coatings a little more hydrophobic than pure HA coating. Furthermore, the incorporation of these particles significantly enhanced the corrosion protection of the composite coatings. Specifically, the corrosion current density for the sample coated with a solution containing 1000 mg/L of particles decreased to nearly one-fifth of that observed in the pure HA coating. Last but not least, MG-63 osteoblasts were provided with a convenient environment on composite coatings since they fed on Si nutritious element to reproduce and proliferate more aggressively than on pure HA layer.

Abstract:In the exploration of next-generation biocompatible implant materials, magnesium (Mg) alloys have great potential due to their inherent biodegradability. The current study delineates the development of dual-functional coatings for Mg alloys, incorporating zinc (Zn) and calcium (Ca), characterized by both anti-bacterial and anti-corrosion attributes. These coatings were synthesized by integrating surface groups of magnesium hydroxide/magnesium oxide with surface atoms of nano‐silicon dioxide (nano-SiO 2 ) particles, leading to the formation of magnesium silicate junctions. Subsequently, these interfacial surfaces were functionalized using organofluorosilanes. With the application of the coating, a notable enhancement in the static contact angle of water from 43.7° ± 1.1° to 158.4° ± 1.3° was observed. The anti-adhesive properties of the coating against bacteria were assessed through inoculation assays with Staphylococcus aureus , a predominant agent of implant-associated infections. No bacterial colonization on the Mg4Zn0.5Ca alloy surface was detected when the dual-functional coatings were applied. While a hydrogen evolution (HE) of 4.78 mL/cm 2 was measured on uncoated surfaces, the HE reduced significantly to 0.35 mL/cm 2 for coated alloy surfaces. Analysis using Nyquist plots unveiled a polarization resistance of coated surfaces that was an order of magnitude higher than uncoated surfaces. As a result, Mg alloys covered with a dual-functional nanocoating layer demonstrate favorable characteristics, such as diminished corrosion rates and enhanced resistance against bacterial adhesion. Such coatings negate the necessity for subsequent surgical removal of bone implants, consequently mitigating potential bacterial infections and the concomitant medical expenses.

Corrosion resistance of a composite polymeric coating applied on biodegradable AZ31 magnesium alloy

Abstract:The high corrosion rate of magnesium alloys is the main drawback to their widespread use, especially in biomedical applications. There is a need for developing new coatings that provide simultaneously corrosion resistance and enhanced biocompatibility. In this work, a composite coating containing polyether imide, with several diethylene triamine and hydroxyapatite contents, was applied on AZ31 magnesium alloys pre-treated with hydrofluoric acid by dip coating. The coated samples were immersed in Hank's solution and the coating performance was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the behavior of MG63 osteoblastic cells on coated samples was investigated. The results confirmed that the new coatings not only slow down the corrosion rate of AZ31 magnesium alloys in Hank's solution, but also enhance the adhesion and proliferation of MG63 osteoblastic cells, especially when hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were introduced in the coating formulation.

Abstract:The major obstacle to the clinical use of magnesium alloys is their fast degradation behaviors. In the present study, the triethoxy(octyl)silane coatings were electrodeposited on magnesium alloy to improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The effects of the electrodeposition potential on the corrosion properties of the silane coatings were investigated. The resulted coatings were characterized by SEM, FTIR, surface hydrophobicity, in addition, the corrosion behaviors and biocompatibilities were also evaluated. The results indicated that the coatings deposited at -2.0 V were more corrosion resistant than the other two silane coatings. Furthermore, the silane coatings showed good biocompatibilities, as demonstrated by significant increased cell viability, reduced hemolysis and platelet adhesion. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The bacterial infection of bone implants is a vital factor leading to implant failure. Superhydrophobic surface with low adhesion can effectively enhance corrosion resistance and antibacterial adhesion properties of magnesium alloy. Herein, the superhydrophobic composite coating of hydroxyapatite (HA)/stearic acid was successfully prepared on magnesium alloy (AZ31B) using hydrothermal method and followed modification of stearic acid. The wettability, corrosion resistance and antibacterial adhesion capacity of the composite coating were studied. The composite coatings confer excellent superhydrophobicity with a contact angle about 152.52° and a sliding angle about 2°, and showed good long-term superhydrophobic stability in air. Meanwhile, during immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF), the superhydrophobic composite coating was converted to hydrophilicity in a short time and exposed the micro-/nano-scale structure surface of HA, which could induce the fast deposition of the mineralized apatite layer. The characteristics endowed the composite coating with the short-term antibacterial adhesion property and long-term corrosion resistance in SBF, which will afford a surface modification strategy for the application of magnesium alloy implants in orthopedics and dentistry.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of excessive degradation rate and insufficient biocompatibility of magnesium‐based bone implants, a polyphenol (EGCG) induced hydroxyapatite (HA) coating was prepared on the surface of AZ31 alloy. The physical and chemical properties and corrosion resistance of the coating were analysed in depth, and its biocompatibility was preliminarily explored in vitro. The results showed that the polyphenol (EGCG) conversion coating constructed on the AZ31 could successfully induce the formation of HA by complexing the phenolic hydroxyl group with calcium ions. The electrochemical and long‐term immersion experiments showed that the corrosion resistance of EGCG/HA composite coating was significantly improved. The self‐corrosion current density, hydrogen evolution and the increase of pH value of AZ31‐EGCG/HA were significantly lower than those of AZ31. On the basis of inhibiting the excessive corrosion of the substrate, the composite coating significantly improves the compatibility of pre‐osteoblasts, supports the adhesion and spreading and effectively reduces the haemolysis rate to less than 5%. The preparation method of the coating is simple, low cost and suitable for complex shape surfaces, which can significantly improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of the AZ31 substrate. It is expected to provide a solution for the surface modification of magnesium‐based bone implants.
Preparing a Bioactive (Chitosan/Sodium Hyaluronate)/SrHA Coating on Mg–Zn–Ca Alloy for Orthopedic Implant Applications

Abstract:The uncontrollable rapid degradation rate of the Mg alloy substrate limited its clinical application, and implant-associated infections have been reported to be the main reason for the secondary surgery of orthopedic implantation. The aim of this study was to produce a multifunctional coating on magnesium-based alloys that have improved corrosion resistance, bioactivity, and antibacterial properties through the preparation of polyelectrolytic multilayers (PEMs) consisting of chitosan (CS) and sodium hyaluronate (HA) on silane-modified strontium-substituted hydroxyapatite (hereafter referred to as Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA). The multifunctional coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed the polyelectrolyte complex SH/CS layer to be uniformly and tightly attached on to the surface of silane-treated SrHA. At the same time, a potentiodynamic polarization test and hydrogen evolution test showed the Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA coatings to exhibit superior corrosion resistance than bulk Mg-based alloys. The results of the cell–surface interactions revealed Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA coatings to be in favor of cell initial adhesion and more beneficial to the proliferation and growth of cells with the processing of co-culture. In addition, antibacterial tests demonstrated the strong bactericidal effect of Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA coatings against both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus ( S. aureus ), suggesting that Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA coatings can successfully achieve multifunctionality with enhanced corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties.

A wettability-transformable superhydrophobic composite coating of hydroxyapatite/bismuth sulfide/lauric acid on AZ31B Mg alloy with dual-function of antibacterial and osteogenic properties

Abstract:Recently, superhydrophobic magnesium (Mg)-based implants are attracting extensive interest due to their superior corrosion resistance and specific anti-bacterial adhesion characteristics. Nevertheless, the superhydrophobic surface is not conducive to cell adhesion and proliferation, which limits the application of superhydrophobic medical Mg alloys. Herein, the superhydrophobic composite coating of hydroxyapatite (HA)/bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3)/lauric acid (LA) was prepared on AZ31B Mg alloys via hydrothermal and impregnation methods, and the water contact angle of the composite coating was up to 156°, endowing Mg alloys with excellent corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties. Furthermore, the surface of the superhydrophobic coating can be transformed to hydrophilicity upon 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, due to the photothermal effect of Bi2S3 that led to the phase transition of the lauric acid on the surface of the composite coating. After 5 min NIR light irradiation, the contact angle decreased from 156° to 60.6°, and the electrochemical tests showed that the superhydrophobic composite coating with wettability-transformable could provide effective protection for Mg alloy substrate. The antibacterial efficiency of the coated Mg alloy reached 99.9% against Staphylococcus aureus and 95.8% against Escherichia coli, respectively. Meanwhile, the superhydrophobic composite coating with wettability-transformable had good biocompatibility with over 81.2% cell viability on MC3T3-E1 cells and good early cell growth and adhesion. This work provides a strategy for preparing wettability-transformable superhydrophobic hydroxyapatite coatings on Mg-based implants with dual-function of antibacterial ability and osteogenic activity.

Hydroxyapatite/palmitic acid superhydrophobic composite coating on AZ31 magnesium alloy with both corrosion resistance and bacterial inhibition

Abstract:The coating-modified magnesium (Mg) alloys exhibit controllable corrosion resistance, but the insufficient antibacterial performance limits their clinical applications as degradable implants. Superhydrophobic coatings show excellent performance in terms of both corrosion resistance and inhibition of bacterial adhesion and growth. In this work, a hydroxyapatite (HA)/palmitic acid (PA) superhydrophobic composite coating was fabricated on the Mg alloy by the hydrothermal technique and immersion treatment. The HA/PA composite coating showed superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of 153° and a sliding angle of 2°. The coated Mg alloy exhibited excellent corrosion resistance in the simulated body fluid, with high polarization resistance (77.10 kΩ·cm 2 ) and low corrosion current density ((0.491 ± 0.015) μA·cm −2 ). Meanwhile, the antibacterial efficiency of the composite coating was over 98% against E. coli and S. aureus in different periods. The results indicate that the construction of such superhydrophobic composite coating (HA/PA) on the Mg alloy can greatly improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloy implants within the human body and avoid bacterial infection during the initial stages of implantation.

Abstract:In order to decrease the corrosion rate and improve the bioactivity of magnesium alloy, phytic acid/saline hybrid coatings were synthesized on AZ31 magnesium alloys by sol–gel dip-coating method. It was found that the mole ratio of phytic acid to γ-APS had a great influence on coating morphology and the corresponding corrosion resistance of the coated magnesium alloys. When the mole ratio of phytic acid to γ-APS was 1:1, the obtained hybrid coating was integral and without cracks, which was ascribed to the strong chelate capability of phytic acid and Si-O-Si network derived from silane. Electrochemical test result indicated that the corrosion resistance of the coated magnesium alloy was about 27 times larger than that of the naked counterpart. In parallel, immersion test showed that the phytic acid/silane hybrid coating could induce CaP-mineralized product deposition, which offered another protection for magnesium alloy.

Abstract:Bacterial infection and excessive corrosion rate are two major concerns of Mg alloy orthopedic implants. Compared with single-function antibacterial coating, dual-function antibacterial coatings with both bacteria-resisting and bacteria-killing properties exhibit excellent performance in anti-bacterial adhesion and preventing biofilm formation. In this work, a dual-function antibacterial composite coating of hydroxyapatite (HA)/hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) was successfully prepared on Mg alloy by hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. Electrochemical tests and immersion experiments have shown that the dense composite coating could provide effective protection for Mg alloy. Compared with the naked Mg alloy, the composite coating exhibited superhydrophilicity with a contact angle of 4°, which significantly reduced protein adsorption and bacterial adhesion. Meanwhile, HACC had excellent bactericidal properties, due to the presence of the quaternary ammonium groups in the molecular chain that changed bacterial cell membrane permeability. The bacterial-killing efficiency of the composite coating was 99.9% against S. aureus and 94.7% against E. coli. Moreover, the cell viability experiments indicated that the composite coating had good biocompatibility on MC3T3-E1 cells with above 84% cell viability. This work provided a strategy for designing surface coatings on Mg alloy implants with desirable corrosion resistance and antibacterial property simultaneously.
