Abstract:AIM: To investigate the effect of psychological counseling training on the mental health and self-consistency of the trainees. METHODS: A cluster sampling was used to take 137 subjects who were the second-term trainees of Southwest Psychological Counseling Training Center in Sichuan in September 2003. The subjects of the control group were chosen from the colleagues of the traines matched by genders, age, occupation and educational levels. All the subjects signed a contract to consent with the research. The training group had been trained for the skills of the psychological counseling for 4 months, and the mental health levels were evaluated before and after training in groups with demographic data form, symptom checklist-90 (SCL-90), self-consistency and congruence scale (SCCS). Those in the control group were evaluated twice by the same questionnaires with an interval of 4 months. SCL-90 was composed of ten factors, which were somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hosdility, photic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychoticism and additional items, scored by 4 grades. SCCS was made of three factors, which were the disharmony between ego and experience, mobility of ego and stereotypy of ego. The observed indexes included the total score of SCL-90, the number of positive symptoms, distress level of positive symptom and factor scores of SCL-90 and SCCS, the total score and each factor of SCCS in both groups. The results were analyzed with the chi-square test and t test. RESULTS: Totally 137 and 106 questionnaires were sent out to the subjects in the training group and control group respectively, 106 and 98 qualified ones were collected back, and the effective rate was 77.4% and 92.5% respectively. ① In the first evaluation, there were no significant differences in the factor scores of SCL-90 between the two groups. But in the second evaluation, the factor scores of SCL-90 in the training group were all significantly lower than those in the control group. The factor scores of SCL-90 in the training group after training were all significantly lower than those before training, but the scores of depression and anxiety in the control group were significantly higher in the second evaluation than in the first one. ② In the first evaluation, there were no significant differences in the total score of SCCS between the two groups. In the second evaluation, the total score of SCCS and scores of disharmony between ego and experience and stereotypy of ego in the training group were all significantly lower than those in the control group. The total score of SCCS and scores of disharmony between ego and experience and stereotypy of ego in the training group after training were all significantly lower than those before training, but the factor scores of SCCS in the control group were close without significant differences between the two evaluations. CONCLUSION: The program of the psychological counseling training does not only make for trainees to promote the counseling skills, but also has the benefit for the trainees to make ego to be harmonious with experience and increase the mental health level.
