Abstract:Augustus Waller, whose name is associated with the regressive changes in severed nerves, was born on a farm in Kent, England. However, most of his childhood was spent with his family in the south of France.1 Upon the death of his father, when Augustus was only 14 years of age, he returned to England, eventually living and studying under Dr. William Lambe, a practicing vegetarian. Waller began the study of medicine in Paris and, in 1840, obtained the degree of doctor of medicine, presenting a graduation thesis entitled Percussion Médiate. The following year he was admitted a licentiate by the Society of Apothecaries in London and, in 1842, entered into general medical practice in Kensington, England.Waller soon acquired a substantial following; however, a desire for original investigation drew him into experimental work and, after presenting two important studies to the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, he was

After the French revolution, a new legislation establishes a law of recognition of the property of the inventors on their inventions. This paper describes the content of patents and certificates deposited in the XIXth century at the INPI, french national institute of the industrial property, by the creators of Guerlain, a luxury brand of perfumes and cosmetics. This paper allows to discover the variety of the inventions which recovers whitening lotion, soaps, ingenious devices and new perfume substances.

Abstract:Samuel Holden Parsons Lee practised medicine at a time when the germ theory of disease had not yet been proposed and antibiotics remained undiscovered. In 1798 he served selflessly as the only physician in town who was willing to battle the Yellow Fever outbreak of New London, Connecticut. Because he practised at the dawn of the age of patent medicine, unfortunately his name also came to be associated with medical quackery. We argue that his contributions have been grossly underestimated. He compounded and vended medications - including bilious pills and bitters - that were gold standards of the day. Moreover, one preparation for treatment of kidney stones led to his sub-specialization in this field and was met with such success that its sale continued for nearly 100 years after his death. While a talented medical man, Lee also had a knack for business, finding success in trading, whaling and real estate.

Abstract:The 1887 introduction of electrocardiography as a noninvasive investigative technique on man by Augustus Waller, and Wilhelm Einthoven's electrocardiograph from 1901 remain the two major landmarks in the 100-year history of electrocardiography. The progress in our knowledge of the mechanism and interpretation of the ECG has evolved throughout these 100 years in a succession of relatively small steps contributed by many unsung heroes, although often even relatively minor contributions by a few dominant "stars", notably Thomas Lewis and Frank Wilson, are perceived as giant leaps. The gradual evolution of our concepts of the ECG are reviewed against the historical background of the events involved from the time of Waller's discovery to the end of the second world war.

Abstract:British-born Dr Edward Waldegrave Wardley (MRCSL, 1842) is an unacknowledged pioneer in the history of mental health care in Australia. Between 1857 and 1872, he assisted in the development of a policy of non-restraint across lunatic asylums in New South Wales (NSW). He then went on to extend this approach to the treatment of NSW's criminally insane patients. In addition, he trialled experiments to intellectually engage educated psychiatric patients across the colony. A prolific writer, and sufferer of chronic depression, Dr Wardley serves as a unique example of a nineteenth-century alienist with lived experience of mental illness.
Historical aspects of electrocardiography

Abstract:One hundred years ago, Augustus Desiré Waller recorded the human electrocardiogram for the first time, using a capillary electrometer. Electrocardiography only became clinically relevant in 1901 when Willem Einthoven devised his string galvanometer for this purpose. Sir Thomas Lewis was the key figure in showing the value of the electrocardiography for the diagnosis of disorders of cardiac rhythm and conduction, but many others amplified the technique to encompass the assessment of structural heart disease, especially when due to ischemia. Knowledge of their role and work gives us a better perspective when considering the development of surface electrocardiography.

Abstract:After referring to certain modifications in his former method of working at high pressures, the author describes some preliminary experiments which were undertaken to determine the change of capacity in the capillary bore of the glass tubes under the pressures employed. From these experiments it appears that, on raising the pressure from 5 to 110 atmospheres, the capacity was increased for each atmosphere by only 0·0000036, and that this change of capacity was chiefly due to compression of the internal walls of the glass tube. Another set of experiments was made to ascertain whether air or carbonic-acid gas is absorbed at high pressures to any appreciable extent by mercury. For the method of operating and other details reference must be made to the original memoir; but the general result is that no absorption whatever takes place, even at pressures of 50 or 100 atmospheres. The pressures are given according to the indications of the air-manometer in the absence of sufficient data (which the author hopes will be soon supplied) for reducing them to true pressures. In the mean time it is probable, from the experiments of Cailletet, that the indications of the air-manometer are almost exact at 200 atmospheres, and for lower pressures do not in any case deviate more than from the true amount. In a note which was published last year in the ‘Proceedings’ of the Society (No. 163), it was staffed that the coefficient of expansion ( a ) for heat under constant pressure changes in value both with the pressure and with the temperature. The experiments on this subject are now completed, and are described at length in this paper. The final results will be found in the two following Tables. In the first Table the values of a are referred to a unit volume at 0o and under one atmosphere. In the first column the pressure p in atmospheres is in terms of the air-manometer.

Abstract:Advances in information technology have enabled design and development of innovations in business methods. This is particularly felt with IT enabled innovations such as Sun Microsystems' stateless shopping Cart for web which is a Web shopping cart system that does not require any data files to be maintained on either client or server.Firms attempt to leverage these innovations to gain competitive advantages through cost reduction and other quality improvements, which may also pass some benefits on to consumers. However, such competitive advantages are increasingly difficult to sustain because business method innovations are often easy to copy or imitate. Quick and cheap imitation of innovative products and processes may reduce incentives for firms to invest further in innovation. Thus, patent protection for business method inventions became a live issue with different on outcomes as between US and Europe. At present, in US business method patents are legally recognised since State Street Bank decision, 149 F. 3d 1368 (US Court of Appeals for Federal Circuit 1998). However, European Patent Office (EPO) still is noncommittal although some business method-related inventions have been granted de factoprotection by EPO suchas Hitachi Ltd’s automatic trading method and apparatus (EP 567 291), Western Union Company’s method and system for performing money transfer transactions (EP 848 361) etc.. John Stuart Mill (1909) said the superiority of one country over another, in a branch of production, often arises only from having begun it sooner.1 So it seems that uncertainty of EPO's attitude to business method patents may result in a serious negative impact in European industry and economy. This thesis sets out to examine what precisely are attitudes of US and European institutions to business method patents and to explain what is present law and how it has arisen. The author thereafter carries out an evaluation of rationed economic and social effects of allowing / disallowing Business Method Patents and to address question of whether Europe should adopt patent protections for business method–related inventions. To address these questions, research focuses on following questions: (1) under current legal framework provided by EPC what business method–related inventions can be granted European patent? (2 )whether business method –related inventions are worth protecting by patents in Europe. To answer latter question, thesis not only analyses predictable economic and social effects of allowing or alternatively disallowing business method protections generally, but we also discuss “patent quality” which is used by US patent economists to analyse whether business method inventions have a sufficient value to justify granting of exclusive patent rights in return for disclosure of inventions’ specifications to public. In analysing predictable and likely economic and social effects of allowing or alternatively disallowing business method protections, US position in patenting business method –related inventions needs to be considered, therefore thesis also evaluates US patent legal framework for business method patents and contrasts it with European position. Through analysis of relevant provisions and decisions, research has concluded that under current legal framework business method apparatus inventions are patentable in Europe if they can meet patentability requirements of European Patent Convention (EPC). To effect that if a business method process invention is achieved by a technical means, solves a technical problem, or achieves a technical effect, it is often patentable in Europe provided it meets EPC patentability requirements. However, turning to evaluation of economic effects of business method patents, economic analysis cannot find strong evidence to support increasing current protections for business method patents. At same time, economic analysis also cannot find strong evidence to oppose present protections for business method patents. But when US position is considered, infringement risk would favour it for it appears on balance that there may be some reason to think that Europe should adopt stronger protections for business method patents. Furthermore, value of disclosing patented business method–related inventions’ specifications seems also to show that accepting business method patents is an appropriate choice for Europe. 1 Mill, J. Abstract:Louis Pasteur is perhaps the most globally recognized French scientist. His groundbreaking discoveries in molecular chirality and advancements in fermentation greatly benefited brewers and winemakers. Pasteur introduced the process of pasteurization to sterilize wines and significantly contributed to the development of germ theory, which made Joseph Lister's antiseptic surgical techniques possible. Despite initially disproving Antoine Béchamp's theory that silkworm disease was caused by a microbial infection, Pasteur tackled this issue effectively. Building on the work of Henri Toussaint and Pierre Victor Galtier, he developed vaccines for pig erysipelas, chicken cholera, anthrax, and rabies. Pasteur also coined the term "vaccination," which Richard Dunning had used before Edward Jenner expanded upon it. Although Robert Koch criticized Pasteur's vaccination methods as ambiguous, historians have clarified many of the myths surrounding Pasteur. This review explores Pasteur's career, his undeniable achievements, and the realities behind the legendary figure who strove to make a significant impact on science and medicine.

Abstract:In 1766, The Bordeaux's apothecary Marc-Hilaire Vilaris (1719-1792) identified with certainty a kaolin's deposit at Saint-Yrieix, in the country of Limousin, allowing so the porcelain manufacture in France and the development of a china clay's and porcelain's dough trade. Archives documents give evidence of regularly supplies of limousin's raw materials by the pharmacist Frantz Heinrich Müller (1732-1820), Director of the Royal china's Manufactury of Denmark, some time before production of the famous table service Flora Danica.
Centenary of tele-electrocardiography and telephonocardiography

Abstract:In the history of electrocardiography the names of two physiologists stand out: Augustus Waller (1865-1922) and Willem Einthoven (1860-1927). Waller was the first to show that the beating heart produces a weak electric potential, which can be registered by a measuring device connected to electrodes attached to the skin. Einthoven developed a 'string' galvanometer, which was much faster and more sensitive than the system used by Waller. Einthoven's electrocardiograph was ready for use in 1903. To facilitate investigations of patients Einthoven connected his instrument to the Academic Hospital in Leyden, by a telephone line, as suggested by his engineering colleague Johannes Bosscha in Delft. The first successful tele-electrocardiogram was transmitted on Sunday 22 March 1905. The heart tones were registered by wiring a specially developed microphone placed on the subject's chest to another string galvanometer. The event was therefore a first both for tele-electrocardiography and for telephonocardiography. We are still awaiting the full-scale implementation of these achievements, 100 years later.

Abstract:Leopold Auenbrugger (1722-1809), the inventor of percussion, joins René Laennec as the father of modern physical examination. On the occasion of the bicentennial of the invention of the stethoscope (1816), I went in search of the material footprints left by Auenbrugger in his homeland, Austria. This attempt led me to construct a rather fragmented picture, with some disillusionment (e.g. about his tomb) and some pleasant surprise (e.g. a new interpretation of the extant iconography). Apparently, posterity has not been sufficiently mindful of or grateful towards this great innovator of medical science. All the more reason for knowing and protecting what is left of him: buildings, monuments, portraits… Anyway, Leopold Auenbrugger is honored and implicitly remembered today, as he was in the past, every time a doctor practices the percussion on the chest of a patient (i.e. billions of times each year).

Abstract:BackgroundThe Wellcome Trust, the World Health Organization, and cardiologists have advocated for the idea of a “polypill” containing multiple cardiovascular drugs to be co-formulated into a single pill for over a decade. Some cardiologists have asserted that the drugs commonly considered for inclusion into such a polypill are older and therefore free of patent protection. We tested this assertion. This project was requested by the World Heart Federation (WHF).Methods, data and materialsTwo cardiologists from the WHF provided a list of 48 cardiovascular drugs for evaluation. We designated the United States and Canada as the base jurisdictions for this patent study. We linked patent data from these countries’ national medicine patent registers to patent information in over 96 other countries using Derwent and INPADOC via Thomson Innovation. We expanded our study beyond the aforementioned data linkage through a systematic search of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s PatentScope, which was based primarily upon the drugs’ active ingredient names.ResultsIn the United States and Canada, eight of the drugs were only available in the patent-protected, brand name formulation in one or both countries. Another 21 drugs had relevant patents, but generic equivalents were nevertheless available. Only 19 drugs (40 %) appeared entirely post-patent. Broadening the co-formulation searches globally, the overwhelming majority of drugs (40/48) were mentioned in patent applications for cardiovascular drug combinations.ConclusionThe assertion that most of these cardiovascular drugs are post-patent is accurate, but only in the sense that many of the original patents on these active ingredients have expired and that generic alternatives are usually available. The landscape of patents covering novel (co-) formulations is far more complex, however. Most research and development for cardiovascular combination medicines are likely to be undertaken by companies whose original patents on the active ingredient will soon expire or have recently expired. Cardiologists looking to accelerate polypill development may consider approaching such companies to partner.

Abstract:Warts, small skin protuberances caused by human papillomavirus, are not life-threatening, but can be unsightly, embarrassing, uncomfortable and potentially contagious. They may regress naturally but over a prolonged time. Hence wart-afflicted people seek prescribed or over-the-counter therapies. Out of the innumerable marketable anti-wart medications, only a few are effective. Besides, frequent applications over months and certain undesirable side effects limit their success rates. Recurrences are also known. Hence the search for an effective, safe, cheap and quick medicine that is easy to apply continues. A number of patents for anti-wart therapies have been filed in the last few years. In this article, we enlist the recent anti-wart patents and find out those holding promise in the future.

Abstract:ON July 1, 1858, Sir Charles Lyell and Dr. J. D. Hooker communicated to the Linnean Society a remarkable paper entitled “On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection,” by Mr. Charles Darwin and Mr. Alfred Wallace. The history of this paper is familiar to every student of biology. Darwin had for many years been studying the question of natural selection and its bearing upon the origin of species, but, although his views were well known to several intimate friends, he had refrained from publishing them, and was still occupied in the collection of evidence when he received from Wallace a manuscript essay “On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart indefinitely from the Original Type,” in which the same ideas were set forth. At the request of the author this manuscript, after perusal, was forwarded by Darwin to Sir Charles Lyell, with the added suggestion that the essay should be published as soon;. possible. After consultation with Hooker, Darwin was induced to allow an extract from his own work on the subject to be published simultaneously.

Abstract:To understand the status and development trend in the field of characteristic fruit wines,all the published papers and pa-tents in Web of Science database and incoPat from 2000-2021,and the visualization research for the literatures and patents were carried out.Among the characteristic fruit wines,literature on apple ciders ranks first,and major research interests are the exploration of apple varieties,fermentation strains,components,and functions.The effects of fermentation on the sensory qualities of characteristic fruit wines are the research hotspot.Visualization analysis of the patents shows that the number of patent applications for cider,mulberry wine,and blueberry wine rank among the top three.China's patent applications rank first in the world,accounting for 75％of all applications.The research interests of fruit wine processing mainly focus on brewing processes and microbial strains.

Abstract:Wall effect in non-intrusive ultrasound Doppler velocimetry (UDV) measurements was investigated experimentally to modify the measurement error due to the wall effect in the Doppler angle and measurement location by a commercial ultrasound Doppler velocimetry. A modified analytical procedure using the time information provided by the UDV system was developed which considers the ultrasound propagation and refraction and the measurement volume. The Doppler angle and the measurement location given by the system software were modified to eliminate the measurement error caused by the wall effect.
