Abstract:This review focuses on Leonardo da Vinci's work and thought related to fluid mechanics as it is presented in a lifetime of notebooks, letters, and artwork. It shows how Leonardo's remaining works offer a complicated picture of unfinished, scattered, and frequently revisited hypotheses and conclusions. It argues that experimentation formed an important mechanism for Leonardo's thought about natural fluid flows, which was an innovation to the scientific thinking of his day, but which did not always lead him to the conclusions of modern fluid mechanics. It highlights the multiple and ambiguous meanings of turbulence in his works. It examines his thinking suggestive of modern concepts such as the no-slip condition, hydraulic jump, cardiovascular vortices, conservation of volume, and the distinctive path of ascending bubbles we now term Leonardo's paradox, among others. It demonstrates how Leonardo thought through analogies, building-block flow patterns, and synthesis, leading both to successes—especially in the management of water—and to failures, perhaps most obviously in his pursuit of human flight.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, Ahead of Print. This article provides the first comprehensive study of the material relating to sliding bearings, lubrication and wear within the writings of Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519). While in many instances he was evidently describing contemporary practice, in other cases he demonstrated great innovation and insight. His descriptions of plain journal and pivot bearings and their materials are far richer than those of any other Renaissance engineer. His ability to classify and analyse his observations led him to highly perceptive conclusions about the effect of loading direction on wear rate and the mechanisms of wear in sliding contacts. In deducing the dependence of wear on load and sliding duration, Leonardo's thinking anticipated that of Reye, Preston and Archard by more than 350 years.

Abstract:In the early 18th century, J. E. E. Bessler, known as Orffyreus, constructed several wheels that he claimed could keep turning forever, powered only by gravity. He never revealed the details of his invention, but he conducted demonstrations (with the machine's inner workings covered) that persuaded competent observers that he might have discovered the secret of perpetual motion. Among Bessler's defenders were Gottfried Leibniz, Johann Bernoulli, Professor Willem 's Gravesande of Leiden University (who wrote to Isaac Newton on the subject), and Prince Karl, ruler of the German state of Hesse-Kassel. We review Bessler's work, placing it within the context of the intellectual debates of the time about mechanical conservation laws and the (im)possibility of perpetual motion. We also mention Bessler's long career as a confidence man, the details of which were discussed in popular 19th-century German publications, but have remained unfamiliar to authors in other languages.

Abstract:Leonardo’s mathematical notes bear witness to a work in progress and allow us to look directly into the mind of the writer. In Leonardo we find two of the three fundamental classical geometric problems: the duplication of the cube and the quadrature of the circle. While Leonardo is extremely familiar with two-dimensional geometry problems, and proposes playful graphic exercises of adding and subtracting polygonal surfaces of all kinds, he is still unable to solve the problem of the duplication of the cube. Numerous pages testify of the attempt to rise above planar geometry and reach the realm of the third dimension, but Leonardo always bumps against the limits of quantity calculation possibilities of his age.

Abstract:For a real sense of history, nothing beats the immediacy of a primary source. I'm sitting in the MD's office of the West Country engineering company Green & Carter Ltd simply mesmerised by a patent document of 1820. It's the name on the patent that's such a jolt to the system: Francoise Montgolfier, son of Joseph Montgolfier (famous as the inventor of the hot air balloon). Not that the patent has anything to do with the 70m-tall Chinese lantern employed by Joseph to send the first man skyward in 1783. It's for something completely different: an improved version of his ram pump, invented around 1797. Outside the confines of a patent office, the ram pump is the closest you'll ever get to a perpetual motion machine, capable of raising water to a height of 100m for years on end, fuelled solely by the power of a flowing water source. In a world of increasing water scarcity and rising energy costs, the ram pump shows every sign of having greater long-term practical benefits.

Abstract:The benefits of self-excited motion include the capacity to draw energy directly from the external environment, as well as autonomy and portability, and the creation of additional self-oscillating systems holds the promise of finding applications in various fields, including medical devices, autonomous robotics, energy harvesting, sensors, and more. Inspired by the magnetic perpetual motion, this paper introduces a conceptual perpetual motion machine utilizing liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) and steady illumination. The system consists of a turntable and multiple motion ducts, each containing a mass block. A nonlinear dynamics model for the LCE-based perpetual motion machine operating under steady illumination is established, considering the dynamic LCE model. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, employing the classical fourth-order Runge-Kutta method, are employed to examine the system's dynamic behaviors. The system exhibits a supercritical Hopf bifurcation between static and self-rotation patterns. Notably, the external environment's energy input counteracts damping dissipation, preventing the system from halting due to damping and other factors. Theoretical condition for Hopf bifurcation in the perpetual motion machine's self-rotation is derived and validated via numerical computations. Extensive quantitative investigations are conducted to determine the influence of system parameters on self-rotation frequency. The results illustrate that through parameter adjustments, the motion pattern and frequency of the system can be controlled effectively. The proposed system offers continuous rotation in a zero-energy mode, presenting remarkable benefits, including energy efficiency, reduced noise, decreased wear, and robust stability. These attributes position it for significant future applications in power generation, energy harvesting, sensors, and various other fields.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of population and huge energy demand, fossil fuels, which are the most widely used fuel, are running low. One of the things that can be a solution to deal with this problem is utilizing alternative energy sources. The article describes an idea of a perpetual motion machine as one of the options to find alternative energy sources. Using Neodymium magnets as the main component of the machine, the authors built and analyzed the performance of a perpetual motion machine. The method allows improving the machine's performance to generate electricity and its possibilities of future enhancements. The results show that the utilization of neodymium magnets on the machine is considered a better option and effective in generating electricity. However, proper arrangement of the component must be made carefully and accurately to improve the project's performance.

Abstract:The following translation of Leonhard Euler's "Examination of an Artifice for Propelling a Ship by the Principle of Internal Motion," originally published in 1750, offers a glimpse into a fascinating historical debate in the field of mechanics. This work critically examines a proposal by Jacob Bernoulli, one of the foremost mathematicians of the 17th century, who suggested that a ship could be propelled by forces entirely confined within the vessel itself-a concept that contradicts the principles of classical mechanics. This translation is intended to make Euler's insights accessible to a modern audience, highlighting the enduring relevance of these foundational principles. The commentary provided offers context and clarification, drawing parallels between Euler's work and contemporary understandings of mechanics. By examining the arguments of two of the greatest minds in the history of science, readers are invited to appreciate the depth and precision of classical mechanics as it was developed during the Enlightenment.

Abstract:This book collects contributions by some of the leading scholars working on seventeenth-century mechanics and the mechanical philosophy. Together, the articles provide a broad and accurate picture of the fortune of Galileo\u0027s theory of motion in Europe and of the various physical, mathematical, and ontological arguments that were used in favour and against it. Were Galileo\u0027s contemporaries really aware of what Westfall has described as \"the incompatibility between the demands of mathematical mechanics and the needs of mechanical philosophy\"? To what extent did Galileo\u0027s silence concerning the cause of free fall impede the acceptance of his theory of motion? Which methods were used, before the invention if the infinitesimal calculus, to check the validity of Galileo\u0027s laws of free fall and of parabolic motion? And what sorts of experiments were invoked in favour or against these laws? These and related questions are addressed in this volume.

Abstract:The Atwood Machine, a classic apparatus in physics education, has historically been pivotal in demonstrating Newtonian mechanics, specifically Newton's Second Law. This study introduces an innovative adaptation, the circular Atwood machine, aimed at exploring circular motion and angular dynamics and integrating emerging technologies, specifically smartphone sensors. Through a rotating disc subjected to controlled external torque, the experiment delves into the relationship between the torque applied and the resulting angular momentum. The study not only presents the theoretical framework but also outlines a practical setup using readily available materials, emphasizing the potential for contemporary technology to enhance the comprehension and teaching of fundamental physical concepts.

Abstract:We describe the physics of the “Windkessel effect” and its role in smoothing the output of water produced by piston-driven pumps found in early fire engines and modern residential well houses. We also construct a simple, analytical model of its operation and apply this model to the Windkessel in Richard Newsham's 1725 fire engine. We find that Newsham's Windkessel reduces the variations in the pump output stream from a high of 80% to a low of 16%.

Abstract:This study is based on Roman wooden force pumps. It appears that they were used in small numbers to raise water from wells, and more commonly as portable pumps to fight fires. The force pump is attributed to Ctesibius of Alexandria (fl. c.270 B.C.). The earlier examples were made in bronze, but the original design was cleverly re-engineered in Roman times to make pumps easier and cheaper to make and maintain, by cutting apertures in a large block of wood, and making internal spaces pressure proof by plugging their extremities. Eighteen wooden pumps have been found, mostly in wells, and remains of thirteen survive. This study is based on examination of the remains, and of the reports of the Perigueux pump (Dordogne, France). Archaeologists want to fully study the pump, tacking into consideration its efficiency and the mechanical calculations of the possible performance and of the manpower required to drive it. Technical considerations affecting construction, operation, and performance are discussed and requires connections with knowledge fields such as mechanics. A detailed Report is provided on the pump, giving, so far as possible, a complete description of it and all that is currently known about it. Moreover, a model, size 1:1 of the pump had been built in order to validate the hypothesis. This paper will present the different sides of the multi-expertise for this archaeology and experimental archaeology validation.

Alice and the Foucault Pendulum: the land of action-angle variables

Abstract:Since the pioneering works of Newton $(1643-1727)$, Mechanics has been constantly reinventing itself: reformulated in particular by Lagrange $(1736-1813)$ then Hamilton $(1805-1865)$, it now offers powerful conceptual and mathematical tools for the exploration of the most complex dynamical systems, essentially via the action-angle variables formulation and more generally through the theory of canonical transformations. We give the reader an overview of these different formulations through the well-known example of Foucault's pendulum, a device created by Foucault $(1819-1868)$ and first installed in the Panthéon (Paris, France) in 1851 to display the Earth's rotation. The apparent simplicity of the Foucault pendulum is indeed an open door to the most contemporary ramifications of Classical Mechanics. We stress that the action-angle variable formalism is not necessary to understand Foucault's pendulum. The latter is simply taken as well-known simple dynamical system used to exemplify modern concepts that are crucial in order to understand more complicated dynamical systems. The Foucault pendulum installed in the collegiate church of Sainte-Waudru (Mons, Belgium) will allow us to numerically estimate the different quantities introduced. A free adaptation of excerpts from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" will offer the reader some poetic breaths.

Abstract:In 1632, Galileo described his experience of motion aboard a large ship and exposed in detail the invariance principle, which was then rightly named after him. I suggest that more than three centuries earlier, in The Divine Comedy, his fellow countryman Dante Alighieri intuitively grasped what Galileo was later to establish as one of the pillars of modern science.

Abstract:Many instruments of the Historical Collection of the Physics Instruments of the University of Palermo date back to the early nineteenth century, when experimental Physics begun to be taught in university studies by using instruments and apparatuses in the classroom to illustrate the laws of Physics. Among the various instruments belonging to the Collection, there are also the so-called 'paradoxes', instruments with surprising properties that do not seem to follow the laws of Physics. In this article we analyze two 'mechanical paradoxes' of the Collection and discuss their possible educational use.

Abstract:In this article Denis Diderot's Fifth Memoir of 1748 on the problem of a pendulum damped by air resistance is discussed. Diderot wrote the Memoir in order to clarify an assumption Newton made without further justification in the first pages of the Principia in connection with an experiment to verify the Third Law of Motion using colliding pendulums. To explain the differences between experimental and theoretical values of momentum in the collision experiments he conducted Newton assumed that the bob was retarded by an air resistance $F_R$ proportional to the velocity $v$. By giving Newton's arguments a mathematical scaffolding and recasting his geometrical reasoning in the language of differential calculus, Diderot provides a step-by-step solution guide to the problem and proposes experiments to settle the question about the appropriate form of $F_R$, which for Diderot quadratic in $v$, that is $F_R \sim v^2$. The solution of Diderot is presented in full detail and his results are compared to those obtained from a Lindstedt-Poincare approximation for an oscillator with quadratic damping. It is shown that, up to a prefactor, both coincide. Some results that one can derive from his approach are presented and discussed for the first time. Experimental evidence to support Diderot's or Newton's claims is discussed together with the limitations of their solutions. Some misprints in the original memoir are pointed out.

Abstract:This paper concerns a simple extension of Lord Kelvin’s observation that energy decays in a dissipative mechanical system. The global limit behavior of such systems can be made essentially equivalent to that of much simpler gradient systems by the introduction of a “navigation function” in the role of an artificial field. This recourse to the mechanical system’s natural motion helps transform the open-ended problem of autonomous machine design into the more structured problem of finding an appropriate “cost function” in the many situations that the goal may be encoded as a setpoint problem with configuration constraints.

Abstract:A new model for mechanical computing is demonstrated that requires only two basic parts: links and rotary joints. These basic parts are combined into two main higher level structures: locks and balances, which suffice to create all necessary combinatorial and sequential logic required for a Turing-complete computational system. While working systems have yet to be implemented using this new approach, the mechanical simplicity of the systems described may lend themselves better to, e.g., microfabrication, than previous mechanical computing designs. Additionally, simulations indicate that if molecular-scale implementations could be realized, they would be far more energy-efficient than conventional electronic computers.

Abstract:The developments in the field of engineering have an eclectic structure. During ancient times, the works carried out at the School of Mechanical Engineering in Alexandria were transmitted to the Islamic world through translations at the House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikmah). Following this process, engineering studies became the focus of research in the Islamic world, both from theoretical and practical perspectives. Prominent researchers in this context include the Banu Musa brothers (9th century), Al-Farabi (875-950), Al-Hazini (1100s), and Al-Jazari (13th century). The renowned Turkish philosopher Al-Farabi conducted research on air and vacuum, expressing his views in the treatise "Risale li-Ebi Nasr al-Farabi fi’l-Hala" (On Vacuum). Al-Hazini's book "Mizanu’l Hikme" (The Balance of Wisdom) sheds light on the concept of balance, with Hazini turning the water balance into an extraordinary equilibrium device and creating a balance called "Mizânü'l-Câmî" (The Collector).The Banu Musa brothers presented valuable machine and mechanical system designs in their work "Kitab al-Hiyal" (The Book of Ingenious Devices). Al-Jazari, born in 1153 in Cizre, served as the chief engineer of the Artuklu palace for 32 years. During this time, he designed many mechanical and automation-based systems. Upon examining the designs in Al-Jazari's book "Kitab-ül Cami Beyn-el-İl ve'l-Amel el-Nâfi fi Sınaât el Hiyel," it becomes apparent that he elevated the designs made before him to a completely different level. Some of today's engineering designs can trace their origins to the drawings found in this book. In this study, the design features of Al-Jazari's 4-bucket water-lifting machine are examined, and its value in contemporary engineering is explored. Al-Jazari designed a mechanical timer to ensure the continuity of water flow in his design. This timer allowed each bucket to discharge water one after the other, maintaining a continuous flow of water. He achieved this through a shaft with quarter-toothed gears. This design can be considered the precursor to the eccentric and crankshafts found in modern internal combustion engines. The eccentric shaft controls the mechanical timing of valves in engines, while crankshafts ensure the continuous transmission of the force generated by four pistons in a four-stroke engine over a quarter of the cycle to the flywheel gear.

Abstract:This synopsis presents the state‐of‐the‐art of peristaltic pump systems in biomimetics and living nature, and allows for a comparison by highlighting the differences in structure and function, as well as advantages and drawbacks for technical implementation. For the first time, data of selected biological examples are collected in one study to give a comprehensive overview of the performance of biological peristaltic pumps. The developed biomimetic pumping systems not only mimic the biological principle and by this inherit its advantages, but also show the usability of the principle in various pumping applications and medical research. A direct comparison of peristaltic pump systems in nature, biomimetics, and technology highlights their similarities, differences, and allows for proposing new fields of application. A topical overview about the current state‐of‐the‐art peristaltic pumping systems of nature, techniques, and biomimetics is given. For the first time, pump performance data of natural peristaltic pumping systems are presented as a compendium for future work. For comparison of the natural systems to technical as well as biomimetic soft‐robotic pumping systems, a flow coefficient is used.
