Abstract:In this study, a narrow band gap semiconductor ZnFe2O4 is prepared first and then a wide band gap semiconductor ZnO is used to modify it by using hydrothermal method under the participation of the chelating agent nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), which will be removed in the process of high temperature baking. The structure and composition of ZnFe2O4/ZnO heterojunction were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). In order to improve the photocatalytic activity of ZnFe2O4/ZnO heterojunction under visible light irradiation Ag nanoparticles were loaded on its surface by using a very simple and special method namely silver mirror reaction at room temperature without agitation. The methyl orange (MO) was taken as model dyes to illustrate the photocatalytic performance of synthesized products on visible light irradiation. Maximum degradation of 84% for MO was achieved when one 85 W ordinary household energy-saving lamp was used as light source and ZnFe2O4/ZnO/Ag as multicomponent photocatalyst.

Abstract:Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs)/ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions were fabricated by a three-step method and investigated as photocatalysts. Experimental results showed that the novel material exhibited enhanced optical properties and a high degradation rate (for methyl orange) under UV light (109% compared to bare TiO2 NRAs). The high rate was attributed to an increase in the separation of electrons-holes induced by the introduction of the ZnO NPs and the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag QDs. The degradation mechanism was elucidated based on the band structure. It is suggested that the TiO2/ZnO/Ag nanostructure developed in our work can provide a new platform for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:As a metal-free semiconductor material, graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4), the high recombination rate of photogenerated charges and insufficient sunlight absorption limit its solar-based photocatalytic activity. Here, we reported the heterojunctions of C3N4–Cu2O with a p–n junction structure, which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The HR-TEM result revealed an intimate interface between C3N4 and Cu2O in the heterojunction, and UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra showed their extended spectral response in the visible region compared with pure C3N4. These excellent structural and spectral properties, as well as p–n junction structures, endowed the C3N4–Cu2O heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. The possible photocatalytic mechanism that photogenerated holes as the mainly oxidant species in photocatalysis was proposed base on the trapping experiments.

Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.

Abstract:A ZnO seed layer was formed on the fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate by magnetron sputtering, and then a ZnO nanorod was grown on the ZnO seed layer by a hydrothermal method. Next, we prepared a single-crystal Ag seed layer by magnetron sputtering to form a ZnO@Ag composite heterostructure. Finally, Ag3PO4 crystals were grown on the Ag seed layer by a stepwise deposition method to obtain a ZnO@Ag@Ag3PO4 ternary heterojunction. The composite heterostructure of the material has super strong hydrophilicity and can be combined with water-soluble pollutants very well. Besides, it has excellent anti-reflection performance, which can absorb light from all angles. When Ag exists in the heterojunction, it can effectively improve the separation of photo-generated electrons and holes, and improve the photoelectric conversion performance. Based on the above characteristics, this nano-heterostructure can be used in the fields of solar cells, sensors, light-emitting devices, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Heterojunction photocatalysts, which can alleviate the low carrier separation efficiency and insufficient light absorption capacity of a single catalyst, have received widespread attention. However, the specific interfacial structure of the heterojunction and its effect on the photocatalytic reaction is still unclear. Herein, a battery of zinc oxide/zinc sulfide () heterojunction microspheres with different degrees of sulfuration were successfully constructed via a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared photocatalysts shown decent aerobic nitric oxide (NO) oxidation performance under visible light irradiation, and the results of various characterization techniques illustrated that the superior photoactivity could be ascribed to the spatial separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs due to the synergy of the internal electric field and the band offset. More importantly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the heterojunction interface can significantly promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NO+ reaction intermediates and thus accelerate the photocatalytic reaction. Finally, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) technology was used to time-dependently monitor the NO oxidation process, revealing the photocatalytic mechanism. This work investigated the role of the heterojunction interface in the gas-phase catalytic reaction, broadening the practical application of the heterojunction.

Abstract:ZnO thin films were deposited using an electrodeposition method and porous morphologies could be achieved by annealing treatment. A variety of Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of the ZnO thin films. Surface morphology, chemical composition, crystal phase and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Evidence of Ag nanoparticles on the Ag-4/ZnO thin film was be verified by the SEM and XPS measurements. The XRD results indicated that the Ag nanoparticles had little effect on crystallinity of the thin films. The photoresponse and photocatalytic results indicated that the photocurrent and photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification on the surface of the ZnO thin film. The best photoresponse and photocatalytic activity in Ag-4/ZnO thin film results from the moderate Ag nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO thin film, which could enhanced separation and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.
Efficient CeO2/ZnO Heterojunction for Enhanced Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Application

Abstract:Organic pollutants pose a significant challenge due to their toxicity and potential carcinogenicity, thereby posing a severe threat to the environment and human health. Heterogeneous photocatalysts offer promising advantages over traditional water purification methods due to their tunable electronic properties such as bandgap, easy separation from the reaction solution and formidable nanostructures. Herein, we prepare a CeO2/ZnO heterostructure via simple hydrothermal synthesis. The electronic structure of this nanocomposite was tuned to achieve a band gap of ∼2.94 eV, which was between the individual bandgaps of CeO2 and ZnO nanoparticles. In addition, the mixed valence character of Ce further enhanced the electronic properties of the CeO2/ZnO heterostructure. The photocatalytic performance of CeO2, ZnO and CeO2/ZnO heterostructure was evaluated and it was found that CeO2/ZnO heterostructure with a Zn/Ce ratio of 0.2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, where the degradation efficiency was 99.28 % after irradiation for 60 min. It was mainly ascribed to the heterojunction structure of the CeO2/ZnO nanocomposite, leading to a higher separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs and generating more superoxide radicals, which in turn improved the photocatalytic activity effectively.

Abstract:Here we report the facile synthesis of Ag/Ag2O heterostructures, which exhibit excellent solar full spectrum (UV, visible and near-infrared) photocatalytic activity and an enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance under irradiation of near-infrared light. The improved photocatalytic property and PEC performance originated from the synergistic effect on the narrow band gap of Ag2O, plasmon enhancement of metallic Ag in-situ reduced from Ag2O, and metal-semiconductor (Ag-Ag2O) Mott-Schottky heterojunction.

Abstract:Constructing suitable heterojunction with interface engineering has been an effective way to boost charge separation of semiconductors, thus providing improved photocatalytic ability. In this work, a novel bimetallic framework (ZnCd-MOF) was prepared to construct heterojunction with Ag 3 PO 4 . The ZnCd-MOF nanosheets were dispersed around Ag 3 PO 4 particles with a close interface; as a result, the interface photo-charge separation was enhanced, and more photogenerated holes can be concentrated on the Ag 3 PO 4 for realizing a higher photocatalytic activity. The obtained ZnCd-MOF/Ag 3 PO 4 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic oxygen production activity than that of pure Ag 3 PO 4 . Furthermore, when the content of ZnCd-MOF in the composite increased from 1 to 10 wt%, the oxygen production increased from 1399 to 2458 μmol g −1 under simulated sunlight irradiation. This work provides a new way to design high-efficiency Ag 3 PO 4 -based heterojunction photocatalyst via taking full advantage of the interface engineering in the composite together with providing abundant active sites for photocatalytic oxygen production.

Abstract:Fabrication of heterojunction is an effective way of improving the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor in the photocatalytic wastewater treatment. ZnO/2O heterojunctions were successfully synthesised using Au nanoparticles loaded onto the surface of ZnO nanorods as heterostructural seeds to induce in situ growth of Cu2O shells. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical workstation and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectrograph were employed to analyze the structures, compositions and photoelectric properties of the synthesised photocatalysts. After 45–90 min of the photocatalysis of ZnO/2O heterojunctions under simulated sunlight, the degradation efficiencies of methyl orange and rhodamine B could reach 93.0% and 99.6%, respectively, which were much higher than those with mono- and bi-component catalysts. The photocatalytic system with ZnO/2O can achieve deep mineralization to decompose organic dye molecules into non-toxic products. The formation of heterostructures not only could expand the spectral absorption range to the visible region but also efficiently facilitate charge separation to transfer more photo-generated holes and electrons to generate oxidative hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. A Z-scheme charge separation mechanism was proposed according to the determination of radical species and energy band structures of ZnO–Cu2O.

Abstract:The rapid recombination of photoinduced charge carriers and poor redox ability seriously hinder the photocatalytic activity. In this study, a novel 0D/0D ZnS/Ag6Si2O7 heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal-calcination method, and its structure, morphology, etc. were characterized. The experimental results show that the photocatalytic performance of pure ZnS nanoparticles is very weak. However, the addition of Ag6Si2O7 greatly improves the photocatalytic performance, and the maximum hydrogen evolution within 4 h is 524 μmolg−1h−1, which is about 5 times of the original ZnS. The enhanced mechanism of high activity and high stability was studied by various characterization techniques. It was revealed that the construction of 0D/0D heterojunction and the close interfacial contact between ZnS and Ag6Si2O7 could accelerate the transfer and separation of photoexcited e−-h+ pairs, which can also improve its photocatalytic performance. In addition, the reasonable mechanism of improving photocatalytic activity was discussed, which also provides new insights for the design and application of 0D/0D heterojunction photocatalyst in the field of photocatalysis.

Abstract:Fe 2 O 3 has received a lot of attention due to its low cost, easy doping regulation, and convenient recovery. However, the low utilization of visible light, and higher transition energy and electron hole recombination rate make it difficult to be used in photocatalysis. Herein, ZnFe 2 O 4 with different Zn/Fe ratios (Z x FO, x is the ratio of zinc atoms to iron atoms) was synthesized by a co-precipitation method, and applied to reduce U( VI ) under visible light irradiation. Different ratios of zinc were deposited on iron oxide nanospheres to precisely regulate the growth of the ZFO spinel. ZFO exhibits a lower interfacial charge transfer resistance, meaning that it has a faster electron transfer rate at the solid–liquid interface. The uranium removal rate of ZFO can reach more than 94% within 80 h under sunlight (intensity = 88 000–95 000 LUX), and can even reach more than 90% at 28 h and 103 h on cloudy (intensity = 20 000–30 000 LUX) and rainy days (intensity < 10 000 LUX). The broadened visible light response enables ZFO to effectively absorb a wider spectrum of light, which is favorable for photocatalysis even under low light intensity. This study is of great significance for designing potential high efficiency photocatalysts to eliminate U( VI ) pollutants in different weathers.

Enhanced Photocatalysis of Electrospun Ag−ZnO Heterostructured Nanofibers

Abstract:A unique dimer-type heterostructure of Ag-ZnO nanofibers with a diameter of 80-150 nm and coupled Ag nanoparticles in the size range from several to 15 nm have been fabricated by a facile electrospinning method. Rhodamine B (RhB) was employed as a representative dye pollutant to evaluate the ultraviolet (UV) photocatalytic activity of Ag-ZnO nanofibers. It was found that the heterojunction structure promoted the charge separation as well as the photon efficiency, allowing both the photogenerated electrons and holes to participate in the overall photocatalytic reaction. The optimal photocatalytic activity of Ag-ZnO nanofibers exceeded that of pure ZnO nanofibers by a factor of more than 25. A possible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZnO by Ag was proposed.
Fabrication of novel Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient charge separation for highly enhanced visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution

Abstract:The construction of efficient and low-cost photocatalytic systems is a major challenge in the field of photocatalysis. An efficient heterojunction photocatalyst designed for water splitting is also an interesting prospect in energy conversion. In this study, a novel Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared via a simple solvothermal method. Mn0.43Cd0.57S was loaded on the surface the of noble metal-free transition metal oxide ZnCo2O4 to prevent the agglomeration of particles, resulting in efficiently improving the photocatalytic performance of the material. Due to the Fermi level balance, the band bending of the two materials constructs a p-n heterojunction, which stimulates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the CB of Mn0.43Cd0.57S to the CB of ZnCo2O4. The uniformly dispersed p-n heterojunction structure effectively suppresses the recombination of photoinduced charges and preserves stronger redox charges. As a result, the established Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 heterojunction showed the best photocatalytic hydrogen production concentration (92.1 mmol g−1 h−1), which was 4.7 times that of the original Mn0.43Cd0.57S (19.4 mmol g−1 h−1) and 54.2 times that of ZnCo2O4 (1.7 mmol g−1 h−1). This strategy will provide new insights into the development of new photocatalysts.

Abstract:In this study, branch-like SnO2@ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated via a simple two-step hydrothermal process. The optical and electronic properties were characterized in detail and the results indicated that SnO2@ZnO nanocomposites (TZNCs) exhibited superior photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation as compared to pure SnO2 and ZnO. The excellent photocatalytic performance of TZNCs can be ascribed to the heterojunction structure between ZnO and SnO2 which depresses the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In addition, the branch-like morphology can provide large specific surface. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) computation on the Fermi level results confirmed that heterojunction structure between ZnO and SnO2 is more favor of the transfer of photogenerated eletrons from ZnO to SnO2, effectively improving separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Noteworthy, this work would pave the route for the two semiconductor materials with a big work function difference which would lead to the high contact potential difference, surely contributing to improving the performance of photocatalysts.

In this paper, a direct Z-scheme Ag2O/Bi2MoO6 heterostructured microspheres with good interfacial properties were successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis-coprecipitation-calcination decomposition. Various techniques such as Transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) were used to reveal the structure, morphology, composition, electrochemical and optical properties of the target product. The catalytic activity of the as-prepared composite was evaluated by visible light degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and transient photocurrent. As expected, the results showed that 1:5 Ag2O/Bi2MoO6 exhibited the optimal catalytic performance. And the visible degradation efficiency is up to 86% in 90 min, which was 2.69 times higher than that of Bi2MoO6 (32%). And 1:5 Ag2O/Bi2MoO6 exhibited the highest photocurrent efficiency (0.8 μA/cm2). Meanwhile, the efficiency of 1:5Ag2O/Bi2MoO6 keep 90% after four cycles. The enhanced activity can be attributed to the formation of a good interfacial contact between Ag2O and Bi2MoO6. In addition, hole and superoxide were identified as the main active species. Eventually a possible direct Z-scheme mechanism was proposed to explain enhanced performance. This work may provide a new perspective for the rational design of excellent Bi2MoO6-based Z-scheme heterojunctions for environmental remediation.

Abstract:The ternary ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalysts has been fabricated by selecting effectiveness Au NPs as a solid electron mediator, via a chemical-deposition process for water splitting under simulated solar light irradiation. The designed photocatalysts exhibit high surface area and wide light absorption range, which significantly enhance photocatalytic efficiency. At an optimal ratio of 24 wt% Au NPs and 60 wt% ZnIn2S4, the obtained ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 photocatalysts achieve the highest H-2 production with the rate of 186.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), and the O-2 production rate is reached to 66.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1). It showed that the ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 composite structures exhibit significantly better photocatalytic activity than ZnIn2S4-TiO2 and Au-ZnIn2S4-TiO2 structure. Such an excellent performance should be attributed to the Au NPs in the Z-scheme system structure which favor to enhance the transfer rate of the photogenerated electrons and holes and remain strong redox ability of the photocatalysts. It is worth pointing out that the unique Z-scheme ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 heterostructure shows great solar activity toward water splitting into renewable hydrocarbon fuel.
Interface engineering of ZnO/In2O3 Z-scheme heterojunction with yolk-shell structure for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Photocatalytic activities based on charge transfer and separation at interfaces can be effectively promoted by matching chemical Z-scheme heterojunctions and electronic structures. However, the fabrication of morphology-controlled heterojunctions has been a challenge to many researchers. Herein, hollow spheres ZnO/In2O3 was constructed via hydrothermal strategy by fine-tuning the concentration of metal nitrate precursors, and special yolk-shell morphology was generated by the symmetrical Ostwald ripening process. The fabricated Z-Scheme heterojunction exhibited characteristic multi-channel charge transfer properties, which favors the spatial separation of carriers. The ZnO/In2O3 hollow spheres increased the utilization of light source, and the yolk-shell structure increased the interface area and the active sites. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the ZnO/In2O3 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activities for H2 production, which was comparatively 26.7 times that obtained using ZnO nanoparticles. From calculations based on DFT, the Z-scheme photogenerated charge transfer mechanism was proposed. The proposed mechanism was verified by analyzing the chemical properties (surface) and the •O2− and •OH free radical concentrations before and after the photoreaction. The mechanism presented the ZnO/In2O3 with strong capabilities for H2 production and elucidated the improved photocatalytic performances. This work creates an innovative route for constructing Z-scheme photocatalytic systems with great photocatalytic activities for H2 production.
