Abstract:Abstract A meeting of experts was held in November 2021 to review and discuss available data on performance of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)–based approaches to screen for early stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and methods for the investigation and management of screen-positive individuals. Serum EBV antibody and plasma EBV DNA testing methods were considered. Both approaches were found to have favorable performance characteristics and to be cost-effective in high-risk populations. In addition to endoscopy, use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate screen-positive individuals was found to increase the sensitivity of NPC detection with minimal impact on cost-effectiveness of the screening program.

Abstract:BackgroundNasopharyngeal carcinoma is common in China, where the incidence is as high as 2·44 per 100 000 people per year, and usually presents at advanced stage when the prognosis is poor. The human Epstein-Barr tumour virus is thought to be an important cause of this cancer. Screening programmes using the Epstein-Barr virus-specific IgA immunoglobulin antibody subtype as the principle screening test can result in early diagnosis, but the long-term effects have not been ascertained.MethodsIn a mass screening programme between August, 2009, and December, 2014, three townships of Zhongshan city in southern China were randomly assigned: one as the screening town and two as control towns. 16 695 residents of the screening town aged 30–59 years were enrolled, and each was randomly matched for age, sex, and date of enrolment with two residents of the control towns, resulting in 33 390 control participants in total. Participants of the screening group were tested for serum anti-Epstein-Barr virus IgA concentrations using two ELISAs. Those with moderate antibody concentrations or higher (≥0·65 probability of nasopharyngeal carcinoma units [logit P]) were invited to be retested annually in the following 3 years, and those with high antibody concentrations (≥0·98 logit P) were referred to otorhinolaryngologists for diagnostic work-up.Findings43 nasopharyngeal carcinoma cases, with two deaths, were reported in the screening group, compared with 52 cases, with eight deaths, in the control group. The sensitivity of the screening triage was 95%, specificity was 94%, positive predictive value was 3·4%, and negative predictive value was 99·9%. Cumulative incidence was 0·26% per person for the screening group and 0·013% for those yielding a negative result, compared with 0·16% for the control group. 35 (82%) cases identified by the screening triage were localised disease, compared with 9 (19%) control cases (p<0·0001). Overall survival in the screening group is significantly greater than that in the control group (95·3% vs 78·8%; p=0·0014).InterpretationBy detecting future cases, the screening programme resulted in 1·65 times more diagnosis than the control group and conferred 81% protection against nasopharyngeal carcinoma for 5 years. Abstract:PURPOSE Two Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)–based testing approaches have shown promise for early detection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Neither has been independently validated nor their performance compared. We compared their diagnostic performance in an independent population. METHODS We tested blood samples from 819 incident Taiwanese NPC cases (213 early-stage, American Joint Committee on Cancer version 7 stages I and II) diagnosed from 2010 to 2014 and from 1,768 controls from the same region, frequency matched to cases on age and sex. We compared an EBV antibody score using immunoglobulin A antibodies measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EBV antibody score) and plasma EBV DNA load measured by real-time PCR followed by next-generation sequencing (NGS) among EBV DNA–positive individuals (EBV DNA algorithm). RESULTS EBV antibodies and DNA load were measured for 2,522 (802 cases; 1,720 controls) and 2,542 (797 cases; 1,745 controls) individuals, respectively. Of the 898 individuals positive for plasma EBV DNA and therefore eligible for NGS, we selected 442 (49%) for NGS testing. The EBV antibody score had a sensitivity of 88.4% (95% CI, 86.1 to 90.6) and a specificity of 94.9% (95% CI, 93.8 to 96.0) for NPC. The EBV DNA algorithm yielded significantly higher sensitivity (93.2%; 95% CI, 91.3 to 94.9; P = 1.33 × 10 −4 ) and specificity (98.1%; 95% CI, 97.3 to 98.8; P = 3.53 × 10 −7 ). For early-stage NPC, the sensitivities were 87.1% (95% CI, 82.7 to 92.4) for the EBV antibody score and 87.0% (95% CI, 81.9 to 91.5) for the EBV DNA algorithm ( P = .514). For regions with a NPC incidence of 20-100/100,000 person-years (eg, residents in southern China and Hong Kong), these two approaches yielded similar numbers needed to screen (EBV antibody score: 5,656-1,131; EBV DNA algorithm: 5,365-1,073); positive predictive values ranged from 0.4% to 1.7% and 1.0% to 4.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION We demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity of EBV antibody and plasma EBV DNA for NPC detection, with slightly inferior performance of the EBV antibody score. Cost-effectiveness studies are needed to guide screening implementation.

Abstract:PURPOSE Screening for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has shown an improvement in early detection and survival rates of NPC in endemic regions. It is critical to evaluate whether NPC screening can reduce NPC-specific mortality in the population. METHODS Sixteen towns in Sihui and Zhongshan cities, China, were selected; eight were randomly allocated to the screening group and eight to the control group. Residents age 30-69 years with no history of NPC were included from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2015. Residents in the screening towns were invited to undergo serum Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) viral capsid antigen/nuclear antigen 1-immunoglobulin A antibody tests; others received no intervention. The population was followed until December 31, 2019. Nonparametric tests and Poisson regression models were used to estimate the screening effect on NPC mortality, accounting for the cluster-randomized design. The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (identifier: NCT00941538 ). RESULTS A total of 174,943 residents in the screening group and 186,263 residents in the control group were included. NPC incidence and overall mortality were similar between the two groups. A total of 52,498 (30.0% of 174,943) residents participated in the serum EBV antibody test. The overall compliance rate for endoscopic examination and/or biopsies among baseline and ever-classified high-risk participants was 65.9% (1,110 of 1,685) and 67.6% (1,703 of 2,518), respectively. A significant 30% reduction in NPC mortality was observed in the screening group compared with the control group (standardized NPC-specific mortality rate of 8.2 NPC deaths per 1,000 person-years versus 12.5; adjusted rate ratio [RR], 0.70 [95% CI, 0.49 to 0.997]; P = .048). This benefit was most evident among individuals age 50 years and older (RR, 0.56 [95% CI, 0.37 to 0.85]; P = .007) compared with those younger than 50 years (RR, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.64 to 1.46]; P = .856). CONCLUSION In this 12-year trial, EBV antibody testing resulted in a significant reduction in NPC mortality.

Abstract:Reports about the oncogenic mechanisms underlying nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) have been accumulating since the discovery of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in NPC cells. EBV is the primary causative agent of NPC. EBV-host and tumor-immune system interactions underlie the unique representative pathology of NPC, which is an undifferentiated cancer cell with extensive lymphocyte infiltration. Recent advances in the understanding of immune evasion and checkpoints have changed the treatment of NPC in clinical settings. The main EBV genes involved in NPC are LMP1, which is the primary EBV oncogene, and BZLF1, which induces the lytic phase of EBV. These two multifunctional genes affect host cell behavior, including the tumor-immune microenvironment and EBV behavior. Latent infections, elevated concentrations of the anti-EBV antibody and plasma EBV DNA have been used as biomarkers of EBV-associated NPC. The massive infiltration of lymphocytes in the stroma suggests the immunogenic characteristics of NPC as a virus-infected tumor and, at the same time, also indicates the presence of a sophisticated immunosuppressive system within NPC tumors. In fact, immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown promise in improving the prognosis of NPC patients with recurrent and metastatic disease. However, patients with advanced NPC still require invasive treatments. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop an effective screening system for early-stage detection of NPC in patients. Various modalities, such as nasopharyngeal cytology, cell-free DNA methylation, and deep learning-assisted nasopharyngeal endoscopy for screening and diagnosis, have been introduced. Each modality has its advantages and disadvantages. A reciprocal combination of these modalities will improve screening and early diagnosis of NPC.

Abstract:Significance We identified differentiating molecular characteristics of plasma EBV DNA between nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients and non-NPC subjects. Sequencing-based analysis revealed higher amounts of plasma EBV DNA and generally longer fragment lengths of plasma viral molecules in NPC patients than in non-NPC subjects. Based on these findings, we have developed a highly accurate blood-based test for screening of NPC. Such an approach is shown to enhance the positive predictive value and demonstrate a superior performance for NPC screening. It also obviates the need of a follow-up blood sample and therefore allows single time-point testing. We believe that this more clinically practical protocol would facilitate NPC screening on a population scale.

Abstract:Abstract Background Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) DNA detection in the nasopharynx is considered a biomarker for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We evaluated its performance as a reflex test to triage EBV seropositives within an NPC screening program in China. Methods The study population was embedded within an ongoing NPC screening trial and included 1111 participants who screened positive for anti-EBV VCA (antibodies against EBV capsid antigens)/EBNA1 (EBV nuclear antigen1)-IgA antibodies (of 18 237 screened). Nasopharynx swabs were collected/tested for EBNA1 gene EBV DNA load. We evaluated performance of EBV DNA in the nasopharynx swab as a reflex test to triage EBV serological high-risk (those referred to endoscopy/MRI) and medium-risk (those referred to accelerated screening) individuals. Results By the end of 2019, we detected 20 NPC cases from 317 serological high-risk individuals and 4 NPC cases from 794 medium-risk individuals. When used to triage serological high-risk individuals, nasopharynx swab EBV DNA was detected in 19/20 cases (positivity rate among cases: 95.0%; 95% CI, 75.1%–99.9%), with a referral rate of 63.4% (201/317, 95% CI, 57.8%–68.7%) and NPC detection rate among positives of 9.5% (19/201, 95% CI, 5.8%–14.4%). The performance of an algorithm that combined serology with triage of serology high-risk individuals using EBV DNA testing yielded a sensitivity of 72.4% (95% CI, 3.0%-81.4%) and specificity of 97.6% (95% CI, 97.2%-97.9%). When used to triage EBV serological medium-risk individuals, the positivity rate among cases was 75.0% (95% CI, 19.4%-99.4%), with a referral rate of 61.8% (95% CI, 58.4%-65.2%) and NPC detection rate among positives of 0.6% (95% CI, 0.1%-1.8%). Conclusions Nasopharynx swab EBV DNA showed promise as a reflex test to triage serology high-risk individuals, reducing referral by ca. 40% with little reduction in sensitivity compared to a serology-only screening program.

Abstract:Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a B-lymphocytes herpes virus and can transform B lymphocytes to malignant tumor cells if infected. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is strongly associated with EBV. Circulating EBV DNA in plasma has been recognized as an important biomarker of NPC. Much work has been done to validate the ability of circulating EBV DNA for screening, diagnosis, risk stratification, monitoring, and predicting prognosis. This chapter reviews the clinical progress of circulating cell-free EBV DNA in NPC.

Abstract:Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a complex disease caused by a combination of Epstein-Barr virus chronic infection, the environment and host genes in a multi-step process of carcinogenesis. The identity of genetic factors involved in the development of chronic Epstein-Barr virus infection and NPC remains elusive, however. Here, we describe a two-phase, population-based, case-control study of Han Chinese from Guangxi province, where the NPC incidence rate rises to a high of 25-50 per 100,000 individuals. Phase I, powered to detect single gene associations, enrolled 984 subjects to determine feasibility, to develop infrastructure and logistics and to determine error rates in sample handling. A microsatellite screen of Phase I study participants, genotyped for 319 alleles from 34 microsatellites spanning an 18-megabase region of chromosome 4 (4p15.1-q12), previously implicated by a linkage analysis of familial NPC, found 14 alleles marginally associated with developing NPC or chronic immunoglobulin A production (p = 0.001-0.03). These associations lost significance after applying a correction for multiple tests. Although the present results await confirmation, the Phase II study population has tripled patient enrolment and has included environmental covariates, offering the potential to validate this and other genomic regions that influence the onset of NPC.

Abstract:Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a pathogen that infects more than 90% of global human population. EBV primarily targets B-lymphocytes and epithelial cells while some of them infect monocyte/macrophage, T-lymphocytes, and dendritic cells (DCs). EBV infection does not cause death by itself but the infection has been persistently associated with certain type of cancers such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL), and Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL). Recent findings have shown promise on targeting EBV proteins for cancer therapy by immunotherapeutic approach. Some studies have also shown the success of adopting EBV-based therapeutic vaccines for the prevention of EBV-associated cancer particularly on NPC. In-depth investigations are in progress to refine the current therapeutic and vaccination strategies. In present review, we discuss the highly potential EBV targets for NPC immunotherapy and therapeutic vaccine development as well as addressing the underlying challenges in the process of bringing the therapy and vaccination from the bench to bedside.
Utility of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antibodies as screening markers for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a narrative review

Abstract:Background and objective: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a tumor of the head and neck that arises from the mucosal epithelium of the nasopharynx. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a human herpes virus and the necessary cause for NPC. The 5-year survival rate for NPC patients is higher when diagnosed at an earlier stage of disease. Therefore, NPC screening should be prioritized for early detection. The objective of this narrative review is to synthesize the existing literature from the past decade describing evaluations of EBV-based serological markers for NPC screening. Methods: We performed a literature search in PubMed for studies published from 2010 to 2020. Studies were required to be English-language articles. Twelve articles fulfilled all inclusion criteria, including eight studies conducted among the general population in southeastern China, three studies in genetically high-risk Taiwanese families, and one study comparing EBV serology versus circulating EBV DNA for NPC prediction. Key content and findings: Studies suggest that EBV-based serology has the potential to be an effective tool to aid in early detection of NPC. The synthesized research also collectively suggests that incorporation of antibody against multiple EBV targets, as well as efforts to optimize assay output, can improve the ability of EBV serological markers to detect NPC. Finally, recent data from the only randomized trial provide preliminary evidence that screening using anti-EBV immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibody may achieve the goal of reducing mortality from NPC. Conclusions: Late diagnosis is one of the reasons for poor survival after an NPC diagnosis. In high-risk areas, early diagnosis aided by EBV antibody could therefore improve survival.

Abstract:Background and purpose:Early diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma is an important method to improve the survival rate.However,the sensitivity and specificity of the screening protocols now widely used in clinic are considered unsatisfactory.Epstein-Barr virus(EBV)-encoded latent membrane protein-1(LMP-1) is one of the protein that has been suggested to be a classic oncogene with transformation properties.The current study was set out to discuss the clinical significance of LMP-1 on the screening of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).Methods:Three hundred patients who visited our institution with ENT symptoms between 2007 and 2008 were involved in this study,all of them were agreed to be involved in this investigation.Not only did they undergo nasopharyngeal swab to obtain cells for the LMP-1 polymerase chain reaction(PCR) analysis,but also were taken nasopharyngeal biopsy to identify the diagnosis.Results:An amount of DNA that was sufficient for PCR was extracted from 243(81%) swab samples,the positive rate of LMP-1 of those with non-nasopharyngeal carcinoma was 3.70%(4/108),which was much lower than those with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(P<0.05).By detecting LMP-1 in nasopharyngeal swabs,NPC was diagnosed with a sensitivity of 88.15%(119 of 135 patients),specificity of 96.30%(104 of 108 patients),a positive predictive value of 96.75%(119 of 123 patients),a negative predictive value of 86.67%(104 of 120 patients),accuracy of 91.77%,and Youden index of 84.45%.Conclusion:The nasopharyngeal swab coupled with PCR-based EBV LMP-1 detection has high sensitivity and specificity,as well as good repeatability,which could be served as part of a screening program for high-risk populations.
Blind Brush Biopsy: Quantification of Epstein-Barr Virus and Its Host DNA Methylation in the Detection of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Abstract:Background: The nasopharyngeal brush sampling can effectively collect samples from the nasopharynx. The blind brush sampling does not require the guidance of endoscopy, which is favorable for implementation and dissemination in the community. This study explored methylation markers for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) at both Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and its host genome levels, aiming to construct a blind brushing diagnostic method. Methods: EBV DNA capture and methylation sequencing and GEO Illumina 450K methylation array data were used respectively for the discovery of EBV and host methylation markers. The diagnostic method was built in training cohort (n = 347) and validated in an independent validation cohort (n = 155). Results: A total of 1 EBV methylation marker (BILF2) and 6 host methylation markers (ITGA4, IMPA2, ITPKB, PI9, AMIGO2, and VAV3) were identified. Both EBV and host methylation markers were almost exclusively detected in NPC samples, with negligible detection in control samples. In validation cohort, the diagnostic method that included only the EBV BILF2 marker showed a sensitivity and specificity of 80.22% and 98.44%, respectively. When combining the EBV-derived marker BILF2 with the host-derived marker IMPA2, the diagnostic method's sensitivity increased to 84.62%, while the specificity remained unchanged (IDI = 4.4%, P = 0.0419). Conclusion: Overall, the blind nasopharyngeal brushing diagnostic method, combining EBV and host methylation markers, showed great potential in NPC detection and could promote its application in nonclinical screening of NPC.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: We previously conducted a prospective study to show that nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) screening with circulating Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) DNA analysis can improve survival. However, the long-term significance of positive results in individuals without cancer was unclear. METHODS: We conducted a second-round screening at a median of 43 months after the initial screening. Participants with detectable plasma EBV DNA were retested in 4 weeks, and those with persistently positive results were investigated with nasal endoscopy and magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: Of the 20,174 volunteers who participated in the first-round screening, 17,838 (88.6%) were rescreened. Among them, 423 (2.37%) had persistently detectable plasma EBV DNA. Twenty-four patients were identified as having NPC. A significantly higher proportion of patients had stage I/II cancer than in a historical cohort (67% vs. 20%; chi-square test, P<0.001), and they had superior 3-year progression-free survival (100% vs. 78.8%). Compared with participants with undetectable plasma EBV DNA in the first round of screening, participants with transiently and persistently positive results in the first round were more likely to have a cancer identified in the second round, with relative risks of 4.4 (95% confidence interval, 1.3 to 15.0) and 16.8 (95% confidence interval, 5.7 to 49.6), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with detectable plasma EBV DNA but without an immediately identifiable NPC were more likely to have the cancer identified in another round of screening performed 3 to 5 years later. Abstract:Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a major cause of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and measurement of different EBV antibodies in blood may improve early detection of NPC. Prospective studies can help assess the roles of different EBV antibodies in predicting NPC risk over time. Methods: A case-cohort study within the prospective China Kadoorie Biobank of 512 715 adults from 10 (including two NPC endemic) areas included 295 incident NPC cases and 745 subcohort participants. A multiplex serology assay was used to quantify IgA and IgG antibodies against 16 EBV antigens in stored baseline plasma samples. Cox regression was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for NPC and C-statistics to assess the discriminatory ability of EBV-markers, including two previously identified EBV-marker combinations, for predicting NPC. Results: Sero-positivity for 15 out of 16 EBV-markers was significantly associated with higher NPC risk. Both IgA and IgG antibodies against the same three EBV-markers showed the most extreme HRs, i.e. BGLF2 (IgA: 124.2 (95% CI: 63.3-243.9); IgG: 8.6 (5.5-13.5); LF2: [67.8 (30.0-153.1), 10.9 (7.2-16.4)]); and BFRF1: 26.1 (10.1-67.5), 6.1 (2.7-13.6). Use of a two-marker (i.e. LF2/BGLF2 IgG) and a four-marker (i.e. LF2/BGLF2 IgG and LF2/EA-D IgA) combinations yielded C-statistics of 0.85 and 0.84, respectively, which persisted for at least 5 years after sample collection in both endemic and non-endemic areas. Conclusions: In Chinese adults, plasma EBV markers strongly predict NPC occurrence many years before clinical diagnosis. LF2 and BGLF2 IgG could identify NPC high-risk individuals to improve NPC early detection in community and clinical settings.

Abstract:Abstract While Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is ubiquitous globally, a high-risk EBV subtype associated with the extremely high incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) was found in southern China, but the evolution history of EBV in humans and the origin of this high-risk subtype remains enigmatic. By obtaining one of the largest datasets of EBV genomes across the world, we found that EBV had an evolutionary history matching the out-of-Africa migration of humans. Within the high-risk subtype from southern China, we identified a rapidly expanding clonal strain originated from a recombination event between EBV strains from northern and southern Chinese around 4000 years ago, followed by strong Darwinian evolution with a fitness advantage of 4%. The clonal strain has almost doubled the risk for NPC compared to the high-risk subtype and explained around 66% of the NPCs, representing the highest risk factor for NPC identified so far. Taken together, we unraveled a strong co-evolution history between EBV and humans where human migration and admixture triggered subsequent recombination and expansion of a highly advantageous EBV strain, leading to a cancer epidemic in southern China.

Abstract:Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant epithelial tumor ubiquitously associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is highly prevalent in South China, Southeast Asia, and North Africa. Despite being a highly radio-sensitive and treatable cancer, a majority of NPC patients are diagnosed in their advanced stage, and locoregional and distant relapses following definitive treatment contribute largely to cancer-specific mortality among these patients. Given that EBV-driven NPC is the predominant variant seen in endemic regions, various EBV detection methods have been developed and are utilized in screening, prognostication, and post-treatment surveillance of NPC patients. While the Immunoglobulin A (IgA) serology assay is the most extensively studied EBV detection method, the detection of plasma EBV DNA released during replication or cellular apoptosis has shown superior outcomes in endemic population screening, prognostication, and detection of distant relapse. Furthermore, there is emerging evidence on the use of circulating tumor cells, microRNAs, DNA hypermethylation, and combination assays in various clinical scenarios. Herein, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the relevant studies using various EBV detection techniques in the management of NPC. Specifically, the recent advances, clinical evidence, and challenges associated with the clinical application of EBV liquid biopsies in population screening, prognostication, and surveillance of NPC are presented.

Abstract:Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is associated with multiple types of human cancer, including lymphoid and epithelial cancers. The closest association with EBV infection is seen in undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), which is endemic in the southern Chinese population. A strong association between NPC risk and the HLA locus at chromosome 6p has been identified, indicating a link between the presentation of EBV antigens to host immune cells and NPC risk. EBV infection in NPC is clonal in origin, strongly suggesting that NPC develops from the clonal expansion of a single EBV-infected cell. In epithelial cells, the default program of EBV infection is lytic replication. However, latent infection is the predominant mode of EBV infection in NPC. The establishment of latent EBV infection in pre-invasive nasopharyngeal epithelium is believed to be an early stage of NPC pathogenesis. Recent genomic study of NPC has identified multiple somatic mutations in the upstream negative regulators of NF-κB signalling. Dysregulated NF-κB signalling may contribute to the establishment of latent EBV infection in NPC. Stable EBV infection and the expression of latent EBV genes are postulated to drive the transformation of pre-invasive nasopharyngeal epithelial cells to cancer cells through multiple pathways. Abstract:Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an oncogenic herpes virus that is closely associated with the initiation and development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), lymphoma and other malignant tumors. EBV encodes 44 mature miRNAs that regulate viral and host cell gene expression and plays a variety of roles in biological functions and the development of cancer. In this review, we summarized the biological functions and molecular mechanisms of Epstein-Barr virus-encoded microRNAs (EBV miRNAs) in tumor immune evasion, proliferation, anti-apoptosis, invasion, metastasis and as a potential biomarker for NPC diagnosis and prognosis. The knowledge generated by EBV miRNAs can be used for EBV miRNA-based precision cancer treatments in the near future.
