Abstract:A brief description and results of the practical application of the test Eysenck's Personality Inventory (EPI) by H. J Eysenck are presented in the article. Hans Jürgen Eysenck was a German-born British psychologist creator of the factor theory of personality and author of a popular test to determine the level of intelligence. The personal questionnaire is designed to diagnose extraversion, introversion and determine the level of neuropsychological lability. Based on these data, the dominant type of temperament, predisposition to neurosis or psychosis is determined. The leading type of activity which is individually suitable for the person is defined, predicts velocity of social adaptation. The author rethought the terms introversion and extraversion, combined their pronounced indicators with neuroticism and thus identified the types of temperament. According to the results we can determine the level of neuro - mental instability of persons. This methodology is approved for use by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Research Center for Humanitarian Problems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, main department of educational and social - psychological work of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The methodology is selected by military psychologists, and can be used to diagnose long-term psychological readiness of conscripts, to activities as part of peacekeeping units. It can be used in the work of specialists in educational and socio - psychological work, related to the training of conscripts for military service. The results of the method are taken into account when compiling a psychological portrait of the individual, on the basis of which further individual work is built and recommendations are given to commanders (captain). The research of the test-questionnaire was conducted on the basis of the Shumsk district territorial center of staffing and social support.

Abstract:A Likert seven-choice response format for per sonality inventories allows finer distinctions by sub jects than the traditional two-choice format. The Eysenck Personality Inventory was employed in the present study to test the hypothesis that use of the expanded format would result in a clearer and more accurate indication of test structure. The sub jects, volunteers in a psychology course, took the standard two-choice version of the EPI and a seven- choice version one week apart, with the order counter-balanced. A principal components analysis with a varimax rotation yielded two components for the two-choice format, clearly identifiable as Eysenck's "Neuroticism" and "Extraversion" which together accounted for 18% of the variance. The seven-choice version resulted in six components ac counting for 46% of the variance. The expanded format suggested inadequacies in the structure of the EPI, defined the factor structure more clearly, and explained a greater proportion of the variance. It thus demonstrated the apparent advantages of the multiple-response format for scale construction.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: There is a growing consensus about the validity of human personality traits as important dispositions toward feelings and behaviors (Matthews, Deary, & Whiteman, 2003).MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here we examine the reliability of the Hindi translation of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Form (EPQR-S; Eysenck, Eysenck, & Barrett, 1985), which consists of 48 items that assess neuroticism, extraversion, psychoticism, and lying. The questionnaire was first translated into Hindi and then back translated. Subsequently, it was administered to 202 students (78 men and 124 women) from Banaras Hindu University. The internal consistency of the scale was evaluated.RESULTS: The findings provide satisfactory psychometric properties of the extraversion, neuroticism and lie scales. The psychoticism scale, however, was found to be less satisfactory.CONCLUSION: It can be proposed that due to satisfactory internal consistency scores, the EPQRS-H is a reliable scale for the measurement of various personality traits.

Abstract:The reliability and the validity of a Japanese version of the short-form Eysenck Personality Questionnaire—Revised were examined for 329 college students and 253 adults. Coefficient alpha reliabilities for the four scales (Psychoticism, Extraversion/Introversion, Neuroticism, and Lie) were greater than 0.71 except for Psychoticism. Test-retest reliability of the four scales over 6 months ranged from 0.70 to 0.85, indicating a substantial stability. A confirmatory factor analysis supported the original theoretical structure of the four personality dimensions as proposed by Eysenck, Eysenck, and Barrett in 1985. Concurrent validity of the revised short-form was evaluated through the comparison of the four scores with the scores on the Maudsley Personality Inventory and the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire. Over-all, the Japanese version of the revised short-form appears to be comparable to the original English version and would be useful for measuring personality in a wide range of settings.

Abstract:Personality psychologists from a variety of theoretical perspectives have recently concluded that personality traits can be summarized in terms of a 5-factor model. This article describes the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO–PI), a measure of these 5 factors and some of the traits that define them, and its use in clinical practice. Recent studies suggest that NEO–PI scales are reliable and valid in clinical samples as in normal samples. The use of self-report personality measures in clinical samples is discussed, and data from 117 “normal” adult men and women are presented to show links between the NEO–PI scales and psychopathology as measured by Jackson’s (1989) Basic Personality Inventory and Morey’s (1991) Personality Assessment Inventory. We argue that the NEO–PI may be useful to clinicians in understanding the patient, formulating a diagnosis, establishing rapport, developing insight, anticipating the course of therapy, and selecting the optimal form of treatment for the patient.

Abstract:Eysenck's PEN model is one of the most relevant and fruitful models with empirical support, and continues eliciting a large research corpus. Nevertheless, the systematic limitations regarding the psychoticism dimension and questionable inclusion of social desirability as a personality dimension have limited the model. The current research aimed to estimate an alternative PEN model including social desirability as a control and test its validity and reliability. This sample consists of 2969 Spanish young adults. Confirmatory factor analysis was carried out to test the fitting of four different models to the data. Once the best-fitting model was obtained, multiple-group analyses were carried out to assess the configural, metric, and scalar invariance of the model across sexes. The results showed that the three-dimension PEN model and two-dimension EN model controlling social desirability best fit the data and were invariant across sexes. Despite the apparent appropriateness of both models, the EN model controlling for social desirability is more appropriate due to the weakness of the P dimension.

Abstract:Since its publication, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) has endured much criticism of its psychometric properties. As the most stringent of these attacks has derived from hierarchical factor analytic studies it is reasonable to ask whether the inadequacies reported accrue to the questionnaire itself or to the problematic features of factor analysis as a method. A further feature of empirical studies that are critical of the EPQ is that they are, by-and-large, based upon non-British samples. As the EPQ was constructed in Britain it is quite conceivable that cultural artifacts are responsible for the inconsistent findings of Canadian and American researchers. This paper offers a brief review of some of the critical research and reports a study in which the item structure of the EPQ is explored by non-metric multidimensional scaling techniques upon a sample of Irish adolescents. The MDS configuration was then compared with the higher order factor analytic results of American researchers to examine invariance across method. A clear item structure emerges supporting the Eysencks' theoretical model although items of the P scale are less homogenous than would be ideal for a psychometric tool.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Personality measuring instrument plays an important role in many fields of human civilization and therefore, present study was aimed to find such an instrument for Bengali speaking juniors.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bengali translation of the short-form of the revised junior Eysenck personality questionnaire developed by Corulla was administered on a sample of 226 Bengali speaking students (99 boys and 127 girls) studying in class seven and eight taken from two urban and two rural schools. Internal consistency of each item under a subscale was calculated; internal consistency of each of the four subscales of the translated questionnaire was calculated; test-retest reliability was found with an interval of 3 months and inter-correlations between different subscales were found.CONCLUSION: The findings provided satisfactory psychometric properties of the extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism, and lie scale.

Abstract:This research investigated the possible association between two types of social behavior and personality as measured by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Junior. Children's ages ranged from 9 to 16 yr. The first study confirmed the test's validity and reliability for 109 boys and girls and approximated the data reported for normative samples. The second study, involving a total of 232 youngsters, concerned the presumed relationship between “prosocial” and “antisocial” behavior, as reported by the referring agency, and children's self-reports (Group 1) or ratings provided by both parents (Group 2). Concordance of judges was in the .7 and .8 range. The main findings were that there might be a relationship between prosocial and between antisocial behavior of youths and the personality sphere. Prosocial subjects were rated low on Psychoticism, low on Neuroticism, and high on the Lie scale. By contrast, antisocial children scored high on Psychoticism, high on Neuroticism, and low on the Lie scale. The contrasting groups did not differ on the measure of Extraversion. The present findings are interpreted as supporting the claims for reliability and discriminant validity of the test. The findings, in part, clarify the meaning of the Psychoticism scale and also suggest a new role for the Lie scale. Possibilities for further research are discussed.

Abstract:Background: Personality traits dispose individuals toward particular affective states and may therefore have an important role in the etiology of affective disorders in particular. Despite being one of the most widely used and well-researched personality instruments, few studies have studied bipolar spectrum disorders using the revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-R) (Eysenck HJ, Eysenck SBG. The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised. Sevenoaks: UK; Hodder & Stoughton, 1992). Methods: The EPQ-R was administered to 50 bipolar patients, 50 unipolar patients, and 50 controls matched on age and sex. Participants in clinical groups were euthymic, and participants in the control groups were screened for symptoms of depression. Results: The EPQ-R scores were most effective at discriminating unipolar patients from controls, such that unipolar patients were higher on neuroticism and lower on extraversion. Bipolar patients showed a similar personality profile to, but were not clearly distinguished from, unipolar patients. Conclusions: This research provides preliminary normative data for the EPQ-R that complement previous theoretical and empirical work in this area and suggests the usefulness of this tool in a clinical setting.
Development and Validation of a Short-Form Inventory to Identify Personality Types: The Personality Identity Estimator (PIE)

Abstract:The use of personality inventories has been limited because of their cost and the length. To overcome these limitations, this study created the Personality Identity Estimator (PIE), an easy-to-use inventory to estimate personality types that can be used at no cost. PIE is a categorical inventory containing 12 items with 3 items for each of the 4 personality-type dimensions in Jungian theory. A sample of 1,104 was used to create PIE. Validity was established through multivariate analyses using data from the administration of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to 553 of the sample. Reliability was established by test-retest. Consequently, PIE is a new short-form instrument to estimate personality type following Jung’s concept of personality types. PIE can be completed quickly, is easy to score and interpret, and can be used for self-assessment of personality types. PIE can be used to address individual differences, to increase self-awareness, and as an interactive instructional tool. Thus, PIE is a new valid and reliable tool that can be used in both instructional and research settings confidently and at no charge. Permission is granted to use the Personality Identity Estimator in practice and research. A printable copy of PIE is appended.

Abstract:Introduction. This article has two objectives: a) to examine the factorial structure of the Spanish version of the EPQR-A through an exploratory factor analysis and b) to perform a confirmatory factor analysis to determine the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the EPQR-A in terms of construct validity in an adult academic population. Method: The sample was 826 university undergraduate students volunteered to complete the Spanish version of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised-Abbreviated (EPQR-A) and to examine the concurrent validity of the EPQR-A, the Spanish version of the questionnaire Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DEX-Sp). We applied exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results. The instrument demonstrated good psychometric properties and reinforcing the original dimensional structure of the scale. The EPQR-A has psychometric characteristics comparable to longer questionnaires, such as the EPQ-R; therefore, it has great suitability when inserted into more extensive protocols. Conclusion. The differences between males and females allow us to affirm that in late adolescence and early youth, promotion, prevention, and intervention health strategies differentiated by gender should be conducted.

Abstract:Environmental attitudes (EA), a crucial construct in environmental psychology, are a psychological tendency expressed by evaluating the natural environment with some degree of favour or disfavour. There are hundreds of EA measures available based on different conceptual and theoretical frameworks, and most researchers prefer to generate new measures rather than organize those already available. The present research provides a cumulative and theoretical approach to the measurement of EA, in which the multidimensional and hierarchical nature of EA is considered. Reported are findings from three studies on the development of a psychometrically sound, multidimensional inventory to assess EA cross-culturally, the Environmental Attitudes Inventory (EAI). The EAI has twelve specific scales that capture the main facets measured by previous research. The twelve factors were established through confirmatory factor analyses, and the EAI scales are shown to be unidimensional scales with high internal consistency, homogeneity and high test-retest reliability, and also to be largely free from social desirability.

Abstract:A common question asked by researchers involved with large-scale, cross-cultural investigations is 'how can comparisons of personality factor scores (or other individual difference variables) be facilitated across many different countries?' Guided by this question, we examined the structure and function of two shortened versions of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (Colledani, Anselmi, & Robusto, 2019; Francis, Brown, & Philipchalk, 1992) using the data from Eysenck and Barrett (2013), which includes responses from over 43,000 individuals from 35 different countries. We leveraged the cutting-edge factor alignment method, which allowed us to gain comprehensive and nuanced insight into the cross-cultural measurement invariance of the EPQ's extraversion, psychoticism, neuroticism, and lie scales. Crucially, we found that observed scores would have weak comparability across countries had alignment not been applied. Together, our findings underscore several critical implications for researchers and practitioners, and suggest a number of future research initiatives.

Recent assessments of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Abstract:The present paper focuses on approximately two dozen recent published studies that examined reliability and validity of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) in clinical, counseling, and research settings. Several assessments of split-half and test-retest reliability of the standard Form F and shorter Form G of the Inventory have yielded generally satisfactory correlations for all four scales. A larger number of studies of construct validity of the MBTI have yielded support for research hypotheses in situations ranging from correlations of the MBTI with a personality inventory, to couples problems in a counseling setting, to line judgment in groups, and others. Therefore, the applications of the MBTI have been broad, although somewhat unsystematic, and with generally favorable validity assessment. Continued attempts to validate the instrument in a variety of settings are needed.
Psychometric properties of eysenck personality questionnaire-revised (EPQ-R) short scale in Arabic among undergraduates in Kuwait

Abstract:Introduction The 48-item EPQR-S is a short version of EPQ-R widely used to assess neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), psychoticism (P) and Lie scale (L) for research purposes. The EPQR-S was chosen for the Arab population because it is a well-established Eysenck theory of personality. Objectives To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic EPQR-S. Methods The EPQ-R S, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO–FFI-3) were administered to 1842 (538 males, 1304 females) Kuwait University undergraduates with a mean age = 20.42 ± 1.42. The internal consistency reliability, factor structure, and convergent validity of the EPQR-S with EPQ and NEO–FFI-3 were assessed. Results Cronbach’s alpha was satisfactory for N (0.76), E (0.72), L (0.70) and low for P. (0.60). The results revealed significant gender differences in P & E with a favor for males and in N & L a favor with females. PCA showed that EPQR-S four factors explains 52.48% of the total variance. Moreover, the high correlations between the EPQR-S and EPQ scales, with coefficients of (0.92) for the N, (0.88) for the E, (0.78) for the L, and (0.76) for the P as the majority of items of the dimensions of the EPQR-S are the same with those of the EPQ. Furthermore, there were high correlations between the same scales of the EPQR-S and NEO–FFI-3, with coefficients of (0.67) for the N scales, and (0.52) for the E scales. Conclusions The findings support the psychometric properties N, E, L scales only. Disclosure No significant relationships.

Abstract:Classical psychometrics held that scores on a personality measure were determined by the trait assessed and random measurement error. A new view proposes a much richer and more complex model that includes trait variance at multiple levels of a hierarchy of traits and systematic biases shaped by the implicit personality theory of the respondent. The model has implications for the optimal length and content of scales and for the use of scales intended to correct for evaluative bias; further, it suggests that personality assessments should supplement self-reports with informant ratings. The model also has implications for the very nature of personality traits.

Validation of an abbreviated Big Five personality inventory at large population scale: Psychometric structure and associations with common psychiatric and neurological disorders

Abstract:Background: The five-factor model of personality, as quantified using instruments such as the Big Five Inventory, consists of broad personality domains including Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism (emotional instability), and Openness. Such instruments typically include >40 items. However, instruments with many items can be unwieldly and a cause of measurement error in clinical and cohort studies where multiple scales are sequenced. Conversely, established 5- and 10-item versions of the Big Five Inventory have poor reliability. Here, we developed and validated an abbreviated 18-item Big Five Inventory that balances efficiency, reliability and sensitivity. Method: We analysed three datasets (N = 59,797, N = 21,177, and N = 87,983) from individuals who participated in the online Great British Intelligence Test (GBIT) study, a collaborative citizen science project with BBC2 Horizon. We applied factor analyses (FA), predictive normative modelling, and one-sample t-tests to validate the 18-item version of the Big Five and to investigate its associations with psychiatric and neurological conditions. Results: The 18-item version of the Big Five Inventory had higher validity and retest reliability compared to the other previously shortened versions in the literature, with comparable demographic associations to the full Big Five Inventory. It exhibited strong (i.e. large effect size) associations with psychiatric conditions, and moderate (small-medium) associations with neurological conditions. Neuroticism (emotional instability) was substantially higher in all psychiatric conditions, whereas Conscientiousness, Openness and Extraversion showed differential associations across conditions. Conclusion: The newly validated 18-item version of the Big Five provides a convenient means of measuring personality traits that is suitable for deployment in a range of studies. It retains psychometric structure, retest reliability and clinical-group sensitivity, as compared to the full original scale.
