Abstract:Reading-comprehension abilities are critical for student success because, in academic contexts, reading serves as a primary means for conveying informational content (Author, 2018). The information (and related vocabulary) that students learn from reading is typically needed for a grasp of course content; academic writing, speaking, and listening tasks; student projects; and student-conducted research. Instructors in tertiary-level EFL settings can safely assume that students are reading some combination of print and digital materials when reading to learn. Yet, EFL curricula, generally, do not adequately prepare students for the reading-to-learn tasks that they must engage in, with print and digital texts, as they progress in their academic studies. These issues led to our study of reading habits of Vietnamese university students in English-related majors. A 22-item online survey was developed to investigate students’ reading habits (a) with print and digital texts and (b) in Vietnamese and English in addition to their attitudes toward reading. A total of 836 undergraduate and graduate English majors, from 17 Vietnamese universities in the southern, central, and northern parts of the country, completed the survey. Study findings provide a snapshot of Vietnamese university English majors’ reading habits and their academic reading needs. In our poster, we will provide background on the study, report select results, and explore implications for students’ reading-skill development in both language and content classes in Vietnam and similar EFL contexts.
