Abstract:We present a systematic development of inductive limits in the categories of ordered *-vector spaces, Archimedean order unit spaces, matrix ordered spaces, operator systems and operator C*-systems. We show that the inductive limit intertwines the operation of passing to the maximal operator system structure of an Archimedean order unit space, and that the same holds true for the minimal operator system structure if the connecting maps are complete order embeddings. We prove that the inductive limit commutes with the operation of taking the maximal tensor product with another operator system, and establish analogous results for injective functorial tensor products provided the connecting maps are complete order embeddings. We identify the inductive limit of quotient operator systems as a quotient of the inductive limit, in case the involved kernels are completely biproximinal. We describe the inductive limit of graph operator systems as operator systems of topological graphs, show that two such operator systems are completely order isomorphic if and only if their underlying graphs are isomorphic, identify the C*-envelope of such an operator system, and prove a version of Glimm's Theorem on the isomorphism of UHF algebras in the category of operator systems.

Abstract:In this article we propose a conception of mixed limits of functional spaces as the case, when the upper limit (projective limit of inductive limits) and the lower limit (inductive limit of projective limits) coincide as topological spaces, which are generalization of inductive and projective limits of functional spaces. We show a cases where these mixed limits are naturally obtained as the limit spaces of non-commutative $L_p$-type spaces associated with the sequence of operators. Also, we obtain results on the properties of limit spaces, we show that limit spaces of Banach algebras are (LF)-spaces, if they converge.

Abstract:In the present paper we study necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a semicontinuous and finite Richter-Peleg multi-utility for a preorder. It is well know that, given a preorder on a topological space, if there is a lower (upper) semicontinuous Richter-Peleg multi-utility, then the topology of the space must be finer than the Upper (resp. Lower) topology. However, this condition does not guarantee the existence of a semicontinuous representation.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an arbitrary set. Then a topology $t$ on $X$ is said to be completely useful if every upper semicontinuous linear (total) preorder $\precsim$ on $X$ can be represented by an upper semicontinuous real-valued order preserving function. In this paper, appealing, simple and new characterizations of completely useful topologies will be proved, therefore clarifying the structure of such topologies.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish several new fixed point results in the framework of topological spaces endowed with a partial order. Special attention is paid to the case that the topology is induced by a metric. Our conclusions generalize many well-known results. Several examples and illustrative applications are provided to support the exposed results.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of relative topological principality for a family of open subgroupoids of a Hausdorff étale groupoid G . The C*-algebras of the groupoids embed in and we show that if G is topologically principal relative to then a representation of is faithful if and only if its restriction to each of the subalgebras is faithful. This variant of the ideal intersection property potentially involves several subalgebras, and gives a new method of verifying injectivity of representations of reduced groupoid C*-algebras. As applications we prove a uniqueness theorem for Toeplitz C*-algebras of left cancellative small categories that generalizes a recent result of Laca and Sehnem for Toeplitz algebras of group-embeddable monoids, and we also discuss and compare concrete examples arising from integer arithmetic.

Abstract:Given a topological space X , there is a natural relation ≤ on the set E∘(X) of all, up to equivalence, zero-dimensional one-point extensions of X which makes it a partially ordered set. We present results on the partially ordered set 〈E∘(X),≤〉 . We associate with each zero-dimensional one-point extension of X , a clopen bornology on X which makes it possible to single out some properties of the partially ordered set 〈E∘(X),≤〉 . For instance, we characterize the maximal (resp., minimal) elements of E∘(X) . We prove that 〈E∘(X),≤〉 is always a lower semi-lattice. For each Y∈E∘(X) , the principal up-set ↑ Y is shown to be a complete partially ordered set, while the principal down-set ↓ Y is a distributive lattice. We show that if X is also locally compact, the partially ordered set E∘(X) determines the topology of the remainder ζX∖X , where ζX is the Banaschewski compactification of X . Finally, we describe the Banaschewski compactification of every zero-dimensional one-point extension of X by means of its associated clopen bornology.

Finite combinatorics implicit in the basic definitions of topology

Abstract:We explain how to see finite combinatorics of preorders implicit in the {text} of basic topological definitions or arguments in (Bourbaki, General topology, Ch.I), and define a concise combinatorial notation such that complete definitions of connectedness, compactness, contractibility, having a generic point, subspace, closed subspace, fit into $2$ or $4$ bytes. This notation is homotopy theoretic in nature, and is based on the following observation: A number of basic properties of continuous maps and topological spaces are defined using a single category-theoretic operation, taking left or right orthogonal complement with respect to the Quillen lifting property, repeatedly applied to a simple example illustrating the definition or its failure. Moreover, for most of these definitions this example can be chosen to be a map of finite topological spaces (=preorders) of size at most $5$. This includes the properties of a space being connected, compact, contractible, discrete, having a generic point, and a map having dense image, being the inclusion of an (open or closed) subspace, or of a component into a disjoint union, and others. Our reformulations illustrate the generative power of the lifting property as a means of defining basic mathematical properties starting from their simplest or typical example. The exposition is accessible to a student.

Abstract:Given an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ on the nonnegative integers $\omega$ and a Polish space $X$, let $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ be the family of subsets $S\subseteq X$ such that $S$ is the set of $\mathcal{I}$-limit points of some sequence taking values in $X$. First, we show that $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ may attain arbitrarily large Borel complexity. Second, we prove that if $\mathcal{I}$ is a $G_{\delta\sigma}$-ideal then all elements of $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ are closed. Third, we show that if $\mathcal{I}$ is a simply coanalytic ideal and $X$ is first countable, then every element of $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ is simply analytic. Lastly, we studied certain structural properties and the topological complexity of minimal ideals $\mathcal{I}$ for which $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ contains a given set.

Abstract:The emerging theory of graph limits exhibits an analytic perspective on graphs, showing that many important concepts and tools in graph theory and its applications can be described more naturally (and sometimes proved more easily) in analytic language. We extend the theory of graph limits to the ordered setting, presenting a limit object for dense vertex-ordered graphs, which we call an orderon. As a special case, this yields limit objects for matrices whose rows and columns are ordered, and for dynamic graphs that expand (via vertex insertions) over time. Along the way, we devise an ordered locality-preserving variant of the cut distance between ordered graphs, showing that two graphs are close with respect to this distance if and only if they are similar in terms of their ordered subgraph frequencies. We show that the space of orderons is compact with respect to this distance notion, which is key to a successful analysis of combinatorial objects through their limits. We derive several applications of the ordered limit theory in extremal combinatorics, sampling, and property testing in ordered graphs. In particular, we prove a new ordered analogue of the well-known result by Alon and Stav [RS\&A'08] on the furthest graph from a hereditary property; this is the first known result of this type in the ordered setting. Unlike the unordered regime, here the random graph model $G(n, p)$ with an ordering over the vertices is not always asymptotically the furthest from the property for some $p$. However, using our ordered limit theory, we show that random graphs generated by a stochastic block model, where the blocks are consecutive in the vertex ordering, are (approximately) the furthest. Additionally, we describe an alternative analytic proof of the ordered graph removal lemma [Alon et al., FOCS'17].

Abstract:We introduce a natural two-cardinal version of Bagaria's sequence of derived topologies on ordinals. We prove that for our sequence of two-cardinal derived topologies, limit points of sets can be characterized in terms of a new iterated form of pairwise simultaneous reflection of certain kinds of stationary sets, the first few instances of which are often equivalent to notions related to strong stationarity, which has been studied previously in the context of strongly normal ideals. The non-discreteness of these two-cardinal derived topologies can be obtained from certain two-cardinal indescribability hypotheses, which follow from local instances of supercompactness. Additionally, we answer several questions posed by the first author, Peter Holy and Philip White on the relationship between Ramseyness and indescribability in both the cardinal context and in the two-cardinal context.

Abstract:We introduce and examine order convergence and the interval topology on partially ordered sets in general. Problem 76 of Birkhoff's "Lattice Theory" asks whether for complete Boolean algebras the order topology and the interval topology coincide. We answer this question in the negative.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to define a notion of cardinal utility function called measurable utility and to define it on a connected and separable subset of a weakly ordered topological space. The definition is equivalent to the ones given by Frisch in 1926 and by Shapley in 1975 and postulates axioms on a set of alternatives that allow both to ordinally rank alternatives and to compare their utility differences. After a brief review of the philosophy of utilitarianism and the history of utility theory, the paper introduces the mathematical framework to represent intensity comparisons of utility and proves a list of topological lemmas that will be used in the main result. Finally, the article states and proves a representation theorem for a measurable utility function defined on a connected and separable subset of a weakly ordered topological space equipped with another weak order on its cartesian product. Under some assumptions on the order relations, the main theorem proves existence and uniqueness, up to positive affine transformations, of an order isomorphism with the real line.

Abstract:Many features of physical systems, both qualitative and quantitative, become sharply defined or tractable only in some limiting situation. Examples are phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit, the emergence of classical mechanics from quantum theory at large action, and continuum quantum field theory arising from renormalization group fixed points. It would seem that few methods can be useful in such diverse applications. However, we here present a flexible modeling tool for the limit of theories: soft inductive limits constituting a generalization of inductive limits of Banach spaces. In this context, general criteria for the convergence of dynamics will be formulated, and these criteria will be shown to apply in the situations mentioned and more.

Abstract:We construct a complete lattice $Z$ such that the binary supremum function $\sup:Z\times Z\to Z$ is discontinuous with respect to the product topology on $Z\times Z$ of the Scott topologies on each copy of $Z$. In addition, we show that bounded completeness of a complete lattice $Z$ is in general not inherited by the dcpo $C(X,Z)$ of continuous functions from $X$ to $Z$ where $X$ may be any topological space and where on $Z$ the Scott topology is considered.
