Abstract:Reflection on and criticism of enlightenment reason is an indispensable part of the Enlightenment itself. It is an important counterbalance to the Enlightenment myth and the crisis of modernity, as well as being a major theoretical subject for political philosophy in the age of globalization. This reflection and criticism must be grasped and examined from both the external perspective of socio-historical requirements and the internal perspective of intellectual history. While giving full credit to the achievements of Enlightenment reason and modernity, we need to review their inherent conflicts, reveal the resultant social crisis, and sort out, reflect on and reference postmodernism's denunciation of Enlightenment reason and the crisis of modernity in order to provide a more far-reaching solution to these issues. Marx turned the critique of Enlightenment reason and modernity into a critical reconstruction of the logic of capital and the capitalist mode of production, seeing the resolution of these evils as lying in transcendence of capitalist private ownership. In this way, he brought the critique of Enlightenment reason to a climax and showed modern society a way to more advanced development.

Abstract:Marx's state theory is not only an important component of historical materialism, but also a necessary part of his political thought. After long years of silence, Marxist state theory revived after WWII and developed anew in the era of globalization. Study of its main ideas, historic fate, further development and new agenda can confirm its explanatory power in the present day and promote its reconstruction and enrichment in the era of globalization. However, some questions in the intellectual structure of Marxism are still open to further study: for instance, the relations between civil society and the state and between the economic foundation and superstructure, the withering away of the state as the end of politics, human emancipation and its conditions, the economic and political forms of the transition from a capitalist to a communist society, and particularly the form of organizational system adopted by the dictatorship of the proletariat, and the ideology of the crucial link of the reproduction of social relations. At the same time, we need to learn from and integrate new social science theories and actively respond to the great changes in political organization and structure brought about by globalization, while actively participating in the great theoretical debates of today.

Abstract:Marxism as an ideology and mode of practice continues to exist in the twenty first century. It is not as orthodox and dogmatic as it used to be in the mid twentieth century. It has absorbed and reformulated many contemporary critical trends like post-Marxism and has reappeared in different theoretical garbs. Marxist literary criticism is by no means a bygone critical mode; it is very much in practice and has taken on different forms of enquiry like post-colonialism and cultural studies. Given the all-pervasive nature and presence of Marxist literary criticism in academic and research world and its usefulness in exploring hidden aspects of texts, it is significant to know its basics and recent developments in its pursuits. As long as people are still thinking dialectically, they are still disagreeing with each other, and as long as people are still disagreeing with philosophers, Marxist literary criticism will be important. Marxism, in particular, had several modifications. It is important to note that someone who really believes in and supports Marxist political theory ought to put it into reality. The present paper tries to briefly sketch its basic assumptions and its mode of enquiry. Researchers and students need to get their ideas and views about Marxist literary criticism clear so that they can apply its tenets to texts for insightful understanding.

Abstract:This article provides an introduction to the special issue, ‘Marxism and Postcolonial Theory: What’s Left of the Debate?’ It casts a critical glance at the long history of engagements between Marxism and postcolonial theory that have been both collaborative and antagonistic. The authors argue that far from materializing the end of either postcolonial theory or of Marxist approaches, these exchanges have been productive and have underscored the continuing currency of both, pointing to ways that go beyond the impasse. The article also provides a critical overview of the debates within different disciplines and suggests new and creative ways of reconceptualizing Marxism and postcolonial theory for the current conjuncture.

Abstract:Founded on a criticism of cultural paradigms, social critical theories display a level of profundity in realizing that only the objective reality mediated through cultural paradigms can affect realistic individuals. However, due to a lack of enquiry after the origin of specific cultural paradigms, social critical theories have obvious limitations in theoretical logic. The empiricist tradition of thinking only sees the material existence of economic facts while ignoring other social forms of existence, thus being incomparable to historical materialism in theoretical height. The methodological selfconsciousness of historical materialism is a precondition both for an accurate understanding of classic Marxists’ thoughts and the organic links among three component parts of Marxism, and for the construction of our own social critical theory.

Abstract:Since Karl Korsch's "Marxism and philosophy" came out,the question of relationship between Marxism and philosophy has been a hot issue.There are two representative views for this issue.One thinks that Marxism is mainly an experiential theory of history,a neutral,objective and functional explication to human history and modern social structure.Another insists that Marxism is a philosophy essentially,and a cultural and political criticism of social alienation and the reification in social life and culture.Both of the directions are reasonable to some extent,otherwise are one-sided.As McClellan noted,by effectively integrating history,philosophy,sociology and economics,Marx's social theory has made greatest achievement in the history of human thoughts in 19th century.If we view in terms of this position,Marx's contribution to our age is not that he set up a new philosophy in ordinary sense or he put forward a special doctrine in any social science,but that he was the first man who consciously succeeded in overcoming antagonism between philosophy and science,opened up a new practice of philosophy,namely integrating all scientific knowledge to form a unified social critical theory from normative perspective of human self-creation and liberation.As a critical social theorist,Marx has made most influential criticism and diagnosis of modern society and capitalism based on the norms of modernity and ideal of human emancipation.The new way of which takes Marxism as the critical theory of modern society has its own merits,by the way we not only can go beyond the so-called dualistic constellation between 'scientific Marxism' and 'Critique of Marxism',but also would be beneficial to well grasp the intrinsic unity and its contemporary significance of Marx's thought.

Abstract:In the historical transformation over decades, Frankfurt School of Critical Theory experienc?es three stages of development, that is, from“old Critical Theory”to“new Critical Theory”to“post Critical Theory”. As for their relation with Marxism, the first stage is represented by Horkheimer and Adorno’s“interdisciplinary materialism”and enlightenment dialectics, which is gradually away from traditional Marxism; the second stage is represented by Habermas’s re-construction of historical materialism, which is beyond recognition; the third stage is represented by Honneth’s reinterpretation of early Critical Theory and Marxism, which turns out to be“another Marxism”. Therefore, generally speaking, the attitudes of the three generations of Frankfurt School are: from appreciation, belief to doubt, criticism, to surpassing and reconstruction of Marxism.

Abstract:Lucia Pradella, Globalization and the Critique of Political Economy: New Insights from Marx's Writings (London: Routledge, 2015), 218 pages, $160, hardback. In 2012, the second section of the new historical-critical edition of Marx and Engels's complete writings, the Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA), was finally completed, and all the editions and manuscripts of Capital became available in order to trace Marx's own theoretical development and Engels's editorial works. The remaining three sections are, however, only halfway completed, and it will likely take at least another twenty years before all the work is finished.… What is more, a great number of them are Marx's journal fragments and excerpts, which have not yet been published in any language. In this sense, the distinct importance of continuing the MEGA project is the further publication of these unknown notebooks, which promise to reveal Marx's unfinished undertaking, the critique of political economy.… It is therefore no coincidence that a new trend has emerged in the last few years of scholars studying Marx's notebooks. Works like Kevin Anderson's Marx at the Margins , Heather Brown's Marx on Gender , and my own article on Liebig in Monthly Review have shown the underestimated theoretical dimensions of anti-colonialism, gender, and ecology in Marx's thought. Abstract:Marx does not neglect the importance of cultural criticism.and develops three kinds of theories of cultural criticism as follows: the theory of alienation criticism;ideology criticism mentioned in German Ideology;and the criticism of daily consciousness.The later two theories belong to the cultural criticism theroy of historical materialism.Cultural criticism is closely connected with economic criticism and politic revolution.Therefore,any cultural criticism,separating from economic criticism and proletarian revolution,run counter to the essence of historical materialism.In this sense,both western Marxism and western left economics fail to sticks to the essence of historical materialism.
