Abstract:Global hydrological models are increasingly being used for operational flood forecasting and monitoring. However, due to data limitations, computational cost, and uncertainty in model forcing, many of the global flood models use parameters that are not calibrated against streamflow observations. In this chapter, the calibration practices of global hydrological models are presented, focusing on the Global Flood Awareness System and other systems that are part of the Global Flood Partnership. Using the example of the recently calibrated operational flood forecasting system, the main challenges of calibrating a global hydrological model are discussed. Finally, emerging opportunities to overcome these challenges, such as advanced Earth observations for hydrological monitoring, improved precipitation forecasts, and the increased computational efficiency are highlighted. With this progress, global hydrological models may fulfill their potential of producing locally relevant information, and thereby advance operational forecasting and scientific understanding of hydrological processes across different scales.
