Abstract:The Chinese Social Citation Index (CSSCI) covers over 500 scholarly Chinese journals in the humanities and social sciences. CSSCI provides an efficient tool for people to obtain information about Chinese social science research. Its CD-ROM disks have been manufactured and a Web site has been set up for people to search for information about it. In this article the authors introduce the goals, significance and functions of CSSCI and a detailed explanation of the data structure and the direction of data flow is provided.

Abstract:From the application point of view, this article introduces the framework of the Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI). It expounds the idea of designing the CSSCI system, and its major functions and features in particular. The data organization as well as data encoding methods of the CSSCI system is well explained. Moreover, this article elaborates on how the citation index data can be used in analyzing discipline features, exploring research hotspots and developing trends, identifying important academic works and constructing academic network. Such efforts are supposed to help the readers better understand the application value of citation index system. It also provides the academic circle with a new understanding of citation index system.

Abstract:Based on analyses on existing indicators for evaluating journals in the humanities and social sciences and our experience in constructing the Chinese Social Science Citation Index（CSSCI）,we proposed a comprehensive system for evaluating Chinese academic journals in the humanities and social sciences.This system constitutes 8 primary indicators and 17 sub-indicators for multidisciplinary journals and 19 sub-indicators for discipline-specific journals.Each indicator or sub-indicator is assigned a suitable weight according to its importance in terms of measuring a journal’s academic quality and/or impact.

Abstract:As an important part of academic papers which comply with the norms of social science research,citations themselves are of great research value.On the basis of the collection of citation data from top Chinese journals in economics,sociology,law and politics and on the basis of internal and international comparison research,we find that economics and sociology are more open to research abroad while law and politics are less open.And in these subjects,the level of citations to other social sciences is comparatively low.We also find that the percentage of self-citation in economics decreased significantly while that in sociology,law and politics increased moderately between 1998 and 2008 according to the results of the comparison of interdisciplinary citations.On the other hand,the percentage of interdisciplinary citation of sociology and law to economics are quite high,while the percentage of interdisciplinary citation of politics to economics is low.We think that the lack of interdisciplinary journals and the lack of researchers are two key reasons for the underdevelopment of interdisciplinary research in China.

Abstract:Social Science Citation Index(SSCI)is a comprehensive social science literature database,estab-lished in the 1960s by the Institute for Scientific Information. Many Chinese universities have adopted SSCI publi-cations as an important indicator in academic evaluation system,which measures the research quality and capability of university faculties. This approach contributes to the internationalization of Chinese universities,as well as the establishment of an objective academic evaluation system. However,this approach has in practice adversely affect-ed the development of Chinese social science research. The reflection on SSCI indicators is related to the issue of academic internationalization,especially in developing countries. A diversified and localized evaluation system should be established in China,which could evaluate the academic achievements in social sciences more effectively and objectively.

Abstract:Purpose - This paper is written as an attempt to employ the Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI) in the evaluation of Chinese humanities and social science research.Design/methodology/approach - This paper uses statistics in the CSSCI (2000-2004) to analyze the academic impact of researchers, papers and works, institutions and regions on Chinese humanities and social science research.Findings - The authors identify 100 highly cited people, 50 highly cited papers, 50 highly cited works, 20 highly productive institutions and 20 highly cited institutions. Also provided is some regional information about Chinese humanities and social science research.Originality/value - It is hoped that the CSSCI, as well as the analysis and evaluation based on it, will give researchers a better understanding of Chinese humanities and social science research.

Abstract:The phenomenon of China's rise as an emerging scientific power has been well documented, yet the development of its social science is less explored. Utilizing up-to-date Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) publication data (1978–2013), this paper probes the patterns and dynamics of China's social science research via bibliometric analyses. Our research indicates that despite the national orientation of social science research and the linguistic obstacle of publishing for an international audience, China's publications in the SSCI dataset have been rising in terms of volume, world share, and global ranking. But China is still not yet a major player in the arena of social sciences, as is evidenced by the number of Chinese journals indexed in SSCI and the lack of Olympic players. Team research features China's international publishing in social science, but the research outputs are highly unbalanced at regional and institutional levels.

Abstract:Purpose The research in this paper aims to investigate the development of Library and Information Science in Chinese universities. Specifically, it focuses on understanding the spatial and temporal aspects of subject knowledge output and providing a more comprehensive explanation of the imbalance in subject research. Design/methodology/approach This study applies the bibliometric method to analyze 131,112 papers published by 51 universities in mainland China from 1977 to 2021, as recorded in the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI). The study classifies the evolution trends of the discipline and quantifies the published article data of the universities using the index of published articles. Additionally, it examines the development status, structural situation, influencing factors and prospects of universities in different categories and regions. Findings The field of Library and Information Science is gaining momentum in Chinese universities, but there are significant differences in its development. While the relative gap among universities in a regional context is diminishing, the absolute gap in the category perspective is increasing. The development of Library and Information Science is influenced by various factors, including the academic environment, geographical position, scientific research projects and academic traditions. The uneven development of the discipline is maintained in the short term. Originality/value This paper proposes a new quantitative index of discipline development, the university publication index. This index allows for an examination of the temporal and spatial trends of discipline development using domestic universities as the subject of research. The paper presents an overview of discipline development through four aspects: academic participation practice, discipline governance mechanisms, education and teaching systems and discourse construction within the discipline. The theoretical support provided by this study can help facilitate innovative development in the discipline.

Abstract:The study explores the characteristics of China's independent research articles published from 1980 to 2011, based on the database of Science Citation Index Expanded. The publication outputs of seven major industrialized countries including Canada, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA were compared with China. Annual production, field performance, research emphases and trends, top articles, as well as main institutional and individual contributors by its top cited articles were analyzed. Some newly developed indicators related to words in title, author keywords, KeyWords Plus, first author, corresponding author, and Y-index were employed to provide in-depth information on topic and author contributions. Results showed that China has been closing the gap with the USA with the greatest growth, and has stood the second since 2006. Most top cited articles were published in 2000s, made up approximately seven tenths of total articles. Pronounced activities were found in chemistry and physics related categories. The core categories included multidisciplinary chemistry, physical chemistry, multidisciplinary materials science, and applied physics. Moreover, China's performance of nanotechnology and science, especially carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanostructures showed dramatic growth. Six top articles with at least 1000 citations were examined, and were observed to concern medicine, nanotube, and adsorption. In addition, main contributing institutions and authors were also revealed and evaluated. Chinese Academy of Sciences played a dominant role, and Tsinghua University, Peking University and five universities in Hong Kong showed good scientific performance.

Abstract:Purpose: This review demonstrates how to position Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) papers reasonably in order to promote the reform and development of the system for evaluating social sciences research (E-SSR) in China. Design/Approach/Methods: This review examines the contributions made by SSCI papers after such papers became a tool in the E-SSR system in Chinese universities, and the resultant issues. This review analyzes documents pertaining to the E-SSR systems of more than 50 world-class universities with consideration to the inherent characteristics and historical mission of social sciences research in China. The findings serve as the basis from which to examine the future trends in the reform of the E-SSR system in Chinese universities. Findings: The application of SSCI papers as an E-SSR tool is not common in world-class universities. To date, the reform of the E-SSR system in Chinese universities has involved: (i) establishing a pluralistic evaluation mechanism, with equal importance placed on SSCI papers and other research achievements; (ii) emphasizing the need for caution in using SSCI papers as an E-SSR tool and instituting distinct treatments for various disciplines; (iii) reducing the importance attached to journal language and ranking, while emphasizing innovation quality and practical contributions; and (iv) establishing China’s E-SSR standards in order to achieve an equilibrium between internationalization and localization. Originality/Value: This review argues that although SSCI papers constitute an indicator of E-SSR system, their importance must not be overstated. The main purpose of the E-SSR system is to facilitate the development of social sciences with a style and characteristics unique to China.

Abstract:Journal impact factor is one of indicators of evaluation of academic journals.Time distribution of citations of CSSCI is very similar to that of SSCI.Based on statistics of time distribution of cited Chinese journals,Chinese academic journals of humanities and social sciences and source journals of CSSCI in citations of CSSCI,the cited peak-years of journals is the 2nd and 3rd year after publication.It is all the same to that of international journals.Thereby,the method of calculation of international journals is completely applicable to that of Chinese academic journals of humanities and social sciences.

Abstract:The Science Citation Index (SCI) was introduced primarily as a method of information retrieval but has alsobeen used as an objective measure of the quality of an academic article. The SCI also provides the scientific communitywith a citations database indicating the number of cited references in indexed articles. In fact the impact factor is awidespread used and acknowledged source for judging the quality of a researcher. For several reasons, the SCI seems to bemore relevant. Because of this importance, there have been many pros and cons regarding the feasibility and potentialutility of the SCI as a mean of academic evaluation in the Chinese scientific community. Overall, China' s share in theworld scientific literature is much less than that of many other countries. Data on the observed citation impact of Chineseresearch in different fields, including medicine, show that the work done in China in general is not integrated well intointernational research. This article intended to introduce some basic aspects with respect to the SCI and to present apersonal view on its role as an international stage of academic merit.

Abstract:Purpose:In relation to the boom in China's SCI-indexed publications, this opinion piece examines this phenomenon and looks at future possible directions for the reform of China's research evaluation processes. Design/Approach/Methods:This opinion piece uses bibliographic data for the past decade (2010-2019) from the Science Citation Index Expanded in the Web of Science Core Collection to examine the rise in China's SCI-indexed publications. Findings: China has surpassed the United States and been the largest contributor of SCI publications since 2018. However, while the impact of China's SCI publications is rising, the scale of this impact still lags behind that of other major contributing countries. China's SCI publications are also overrepresented in some journals. Originality/Value: Reporting the latest facts about China's SCI-indexed publications, this article will benefit the reform of China's research evaluation system.
