Abstract:The hardware industry is desperate for a modern way to do mechanical design. A new CAD program created for the modern world would lower the barrier to building hardware, decrease the time of development, and usher in a new era of building. The tools used to build with today are supported on the shoulders of giants, but a lot could be done to make them even better. At some point, mechanical CAD lost some of its roots of innovation. Let's dive into a few of the problems with the CAD programs that exist today and see how to make them better.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem existing in the computer aided design process that how to express the design intents with high-level engineering terminologies,a mechanical product self-organized semantic feature evolution technology for axiomatic design is proposed, so that the constraint relations between mechanical parts could be expressed in a semantic form which is more suitable for designers.By describing the evolution rules for semantic constraint information,the abstract expression of design semantics in mechanical product evolution process is realized and the constraint relations between parts are mapped to the geometric level from the semantic level;With semantic feature relation graph,the abstract semantic description,the semantic relative structure and the semantic constraint information are linked together;And the methods of semantic feature self-organized evolution are classified.Finally,combining a design example of domestic high-speed elevator,how to apply the theory to practical product development is illustrated and this method and its validity is described and verified.According to the study results,the designers are able to represent the design intents at an edvanced semantic level in a more intuitional and natural way and the automation,recursion and visualization for mechanical product axiomatic design are also realized.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel, next-generation, cloud-native parametric and associative platform for digital knowledge, services and automation, and the rationalisation behind the development of and the need for this platform in relation to the history of computational design and engineering, and the advantages and limitations of each step in this evolution: Computer Aided Design (CAD), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Parametric and Associative Design (PAD), Generative Design and programming approaches to design and engineering. The paper discusses some of the key functionalities in relation to why they are useful as a next step in the digital transformation of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. The paper concludes with some of the challenges for the near future of this platform.

User Perspectives on Branching in Computer-Aided Design

Abstract:Branching is a feature of distributed version control systems that facilitates the ``divide and conquer'' strategy present in complex and collaborative work domains. Branching has revolutionized modern software development and has the potential to similarly transform hardware product development via CAD (computer-aided design). Yet, contrasting with its status in software, branching as a feature of commercial CAD systems is in its infancy, and little research exists to investigate its use in the digital design and development of physical products. To address this knowledge gap, in this paper, we mine and analyze 719 user-generated posts from online CAD forums to qualitatively study designers' intentions for and preliminary use of branching in CAD. Our work contributes a taxonomy of CAD branching use cases, an identification of deficiencies of existing branching capabilities in CAD, and a discussion of the untapped potential of CAD branching to support a new paradigm of collaborative mechanical design. The insights gained from this study may help CAD tool developers address design shortcomings in CAD branching tools and assist CAD practitioners by raising their awareness of CAD branching to improve design efficiency and collaborative workflows in hardware development teams.

Abstract:Computer-aided design (CAD) has become indispensable to increasingly collaborative hardware design processes. Despite the long-standing and growing need for collaboration with CAD models and tools, anecdotal reports and ongoing researcher efforts point to a complex and unresolved set of challenges faced by designers when working with distributed CAD. We aim to close this academic-practitioner knowledge gap through the first systematic study of professional user-driven CAD collaboration challenges. In this work, we conduct semi-structured interviews with 20 CAD professionals of diverse industries, roles, and experience levels to understand their collaborative workflows with distributed CAD tools. In total, we identify 14 challenges related to collaborative design, communication, data management, and permissioning that are currently impeding effective collaboration in professional CAD teams. Our systematic classification of CAD collaboration challenges presents a guide for pressing areas of future work, highlighting important implications for CAD researchers, practitioners, and tool builders to target new advancement in CAD infrastructure, management choices, and modelling best practices. With the insights gained from this work, we hope to ultimately improve collaboration efficiency, quality, and innovation for future product design teams.

Abstract:Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) is a consolidated engineering activity that suffers a real integration with 3D CAD systems. DfMA principles are currently applied downstream of the 3D modelling, by following the well-known rules available from the literature and company's know-how. The paper provides a method to acquire, elaborate and represent DfMA rules sets to aid designers and engineers in developing mechanical products. This research work wants to define a general method able to couple DfMA design guidelines (knowledge-based design) with geometrical product features available by the investigation of the 3D model. The analysis of the 3D CAD model allows to anticipate manufacturing issues and to control manufacturing cost during product design. Moreover, a framework to embed this approach within a 3D CAD system is presented for future development in a software tool. Two case studies, a simple casing made of six parts and a centrifugal pump made of sixty-eight parts, highlight how the proposed method allows easy deployment of this approach in DfMA projects. Several benefits are recognized: (i) anticipation of manufacturing and assembly issues, (ii) reduction of manufacturing and assembly cost and, (iii) reduction of effort and time required by designers during the product development process.

Abstract:Abstract. This paper details the progress toward the development of the ideal mechanical engineering design support system. It attempts to look at the gap between the needs of a mechanical engineer and what is currently available on CAD systems. Since the term CAD emphasizes that the computer is an aid to the human designer, this paper is designer-centric. It is based heavily on the activities performed by designers and the types of information developed by them. Seventeen goals for the ideal mechanical design support system are listed. These are directed at the types of information developed during the design process and the activities used to develop them. For each of the seventeen, background information, the current state-of-the-art, and opportunities for future development are itemized.

Abstract:With the rapid development of science and technology and the emergence of new technologies, the speed of product upgrading has accelerated, and the life cycle has been significantly shortened, leading to increasingly fierce market competition. Through the analysis of the enterprise product development process, combined with CAD-based product rapid design technology and parametric design technology, this paper proposes a product configuration editor based on three-dimensional software with a visual interface, and combines it with the PDM system. A software system that can be applied to actual product development is formed. Finally, the feasibility of a vehicle steering gear product design process is proved in practice. The research of this article mainly has the following two aspects of academic significance: this article describes the process of product development and design by enterprises under the mass customization production mode. After analyzing the application of CAD technology in the product design process, we studied how to use advanced design knowledge to combine specific three-dimensional CAD software for rapid product design, which can guide manufacturing companies to better carry out product design work. It is proposed to improve and perfect the initial configuration results of products in a specific three-dimensional design environment, and it can communicate with data management systems such as PDM. The configuration results can be edited and modified in the 3D design environment, and when specific parts need to be modified and designed, the parametric module embedded in the 3D design software can be used to design directly, avoiding multiple heterogeneous systems switching back and forth between, shorten the development cycle. In addition, for enterprises, the research in this article is also of great application significance.

Abstract:In 2016, Fusion 360, a productintroduced byAutodesk and integrating industrial design, structural design, mechanical simulation, and CAM, turns out a design platform supportingcollaboration and sharing both cross-platform and via the cloud. In previous products, design and manufacturing use to be isolated. In the course of design, research and development, the communication between designers and engineers used to go on through different software products, tool commands, and even industry terms. Moreover, difficulty also lies with the communication between design thoughts and machining strategies. Naturally, a difficult product design and R & D process would trigger a noticeable gap between the design model and the actual product. A complete product development process tends to cover several major areas, such as industrial design, mechanical design, rendering and animation, computer aided emulation (CAE), and computer aided manufacturing (CAM). Fusion 360, a perfect design solving the technical problems of cross-platform data exchange, realizes the effective control of cross-regional collaboration and presents an overview of collaboration and breaks the barriers between art and manufacturing, andblocks between design and processing. The "Eco-development of Fusion360 Industrial Chain" is both a significant means to and an inevitable trend forthe manufacturers and industrial designers to carry out innovation in China.

Abstract:Integrating modern artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly generative AI, holds the promise of revolutionizing computer-aided design (CAD) tools and the engineering design process. However, the direction of "AI+CAD" remains unclear: how will the current generation of intelligent CAD (ICAD) differ from its predecessor in the 1980s and 1990s, what strategic pathways should researchers and engineers pursue for its implementation, and what potential technical challenges might arise? As an attempt to address these questions, this paper investigates the transformative role of modern AI techniques in advancing CAD towards ICAD. It first analyzes the design process and reconsiders the roles AI techniques can assume in this process, highlighting how they can restructure the path humans, computers, and designs interact with each other. The primary conclusion is that ICAD systems should assume an intensional rather than extensional role in the design process. This offers insights into the evaluation of the previous generation of ICAD (ICAD 1.0) and outlines a prospective framework and trajectory for the next generation of ICAD (ICAD 2.0).

Abstract:Analyzing multi-vendor mechanical system designs requires a significant amount of manual work, resulting in a design paradigm where analysis is conducted only after the design is locked and components are selected. This leads to a suboptimal design with compatibility issues, over-dimensioned components, inferior performance, poor energy efficiency, and a lack of collaboration between OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and system integrators. To overcome these issues, this paper proposes Co-Des (collaborative design) framework for automated and collaborative multi-vendor system design. The framework relies on standardized digital twin documents (DTD) of system designs, components, and analyses. The discoverability and distribution of these DTDs are enabled with digital twin web (DTW). Co-Des framework allows for finding suitable components for the design task by automatically running selected analyses employing component digital twins. In addition, OEMs can provide customized components for system integrators using the initial system design defined in the system design DTD. The use of the Co-Des framework was demonstrated with a windmill powertrain design use case, and the applicability of the automated assembly analysis for component selection was verified with performance measurements. The adoption of the proposed framework will lead to a paradigm shift from manual and siloed work relying on the exchange of PDFs to a more automated and collaborative design of mechanical systems. The adoption rate is defined by the willingness of system integrators to publish their initial system designs and OEMs their components as public digital twins.

Abstract:Abstract Within the context of modern industries, additive manufacturing (AM) plays a critical role. Design for AM (DfAM) requires defining design actions related to the product’s geometry under development. DfAM affects design choices such as the type of process, the material, the geometry, and the model’s features. Knowledge-based engineering (KBE) is promising for integrating DfAM principles in the early phases of product development. Still, few limitations are noticed, such as the real interoperability between DfAM and 3D CAD systems, leading to the application of proper DfAM rules downstream of the 3D modeling. This paper aims to describe a method to formalize AM engineering knowledge used as a repository to develop a CAD-integrated decision support tool by acknowledging the current gap. The method uses, as input, geometrical data retrieved by the feature analysis of the 3D CAD model (feature recognition approach) and manufacturing information related to AM processes. The method will allow closing the gap between the design and production departments by creating a knowledge-based system. The outcome of this system does not concern the possibility of predicting the AM process parameters. The system will support engineers in delivering product designs compliant with AM processes. Based on this system, a CAD-integrated DfAM tool can be developed in the future.

Abstract:Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer-based software to aid in design modeling, design analysis, design review, and design documentation. Nevertheless, the benefits of CAD can be elevated in combination with artificial intelligence (AI), extended reality, and manufacturing. AI can create an intelligent graphics interface and change tedious design processes into sophisticated ones. In extended reality technology, simulation can take place in a 3D virtual environment, thereby providing excellent interaction and better analysis. In manufacturing, as seen in 3D printing technology, CAD systems can be directly connected to manufacturing to produce complex parts easily and rapidly. In this paper, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in CAD, as well as CAD application in extended reality and 3D printing is examined. The primary aim of this review is to present an overview of current state-of-the-art CAD and its applications, as well as to forecast its future prospects. The article is written using a systematic review of journal papers with a focus on a wide spectrum of potentially relevant researches on CAD. The benefits of incorporating AI into the CAD systems, the use of CAD in extended reality and 3D printing, and finally a brief discussion of issues that are pushing CAD to new levels are all discussed. Finally, the review concluded that the demand for several varied products based on a single object input, immersive and interactive simulation, and direct design-to-manufacturing integration is driving CAD to new levels.

Abstract:AbstractThe integration of emerging technologies into a complete digital thread promises to disrupt design and manufacturing workflows throughout the value chain to enable efficiency and productivity transformation, while unlocking completely new design freedom. A particularly appealing aspect involves the simultaneous design and manufacture of the macroscale structural topology and material microstructure of a product. Here we demonstrate such a workflow that digitally integrates: design automation – conception and automation of a design problem based on multiscale topology optimization; material compilation – computational geometry algorithms that create spatially-variable, physically-realizable multimaterial microstructures; and digital fabrication – fabrication of multiscale optimized components via voxel-based additive manufacturing with material jetting of multiple photo-curable polymers. We validate the digital design and manufacturing workflow by designing, fabricating, and testing a series of structures that illustrate capabilities, show how it empowers the exploitation of new design freedom, and even challenges traditional design principles relating form, structure, and function.

Abstract:The launching integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) and materials genome engineering (MGE) has led the transformation of empirical and theoretical design paradigm into the rational computational one that further provides the basis for the data-driven design paradigm by integrating the high-throughput techniques in experiments and computations, the big data science with general principles, the informatics with knowledge discovery based on data mining and machine learning, and ultimately enabling the possibility of materials intelligence design (MID) via artificial intelligence. In this perspective article, we highlight the intelligent solution to acquire the property-structure-process-performance relationship of multilevel-structured materials by emphasizing modularization, automation, standardization, integration and intelligence, following the hierarchical relationship of data, information, knowledge and wisdom, which is essentially different from the past empirical, theoretical and computational paradigms. The new era of MID is expected to fundamentally reform the material innovation mode through an integrated infrastructure guided by novel concepts that is radically distinguished from the way of thinking and doing in the past, providing a perspective scientific vision and direction for future materials design.
