Abstract:The damaged male holotype of Hydrobaenus glacialis Lundström, 1915 is redescribed and transferred to the genus Chaetocladius Kieffer. The male imago is readily distinguished by the reduced antenna with 10–11 flagellomeres and by hypopygial features. The similarities with the H. lugubris group in all likelihood are due to common adaptations to ground mating.

Abstract:Abstract. Orthocladius (Orthocladius) is a subgenus of one of the more speciose genera amongst the Holarctic chironomids of the subfamily Orthocladiinae. Although many names have been applied, adult males are difficult to distinguish. However, the immature stages often are known, and pupae discriminate taxa reliably. Based predominantly upon examination of exuviae, Orthocladius atripluma Kieffer and Orthocladius mitisi Goetghebuer are syn.n. of Orthocladius glabripennis (Goetghebuer); Orthocladius smolandicus Brundin a syn.n. of Orthocladius holsatus Goetghebuer; Orthocladius lenzi Kieffer a syn.n. of Orthocladius oblidens (Walker); Orthocladius rhyacobius Kieffer, Orthocladius rhyacophilus Kieffer and Orthocladius excavatus Brundin are syn.n. of Orthocladius obumbratus Johannsen; Orthocladius saxicola Kieffer and Orthocladius curtiseta Sæther are syn.n. of Orthocladius rubicundus (Meigen). Orthocladius (Orthocladius) vaillanti is described as sp.n., based upon distinctive pupal exuviae. Lectotypes are designated for Orthocladius rhyacobius Kieffer, Orthocladius rhyacophilus Kieffer, Orthocladius rivinus Kieffer, Chironomus rubicundus Meigen and Orthocladius saxicola Kieffer. A key to the thirteen western palaearctic species is given.

Abstract:The male imago of Chaetocladius longivirgatus sp. n. is described and diagnosed against a refined characterization of the species understood as C. suecicus (Kieffer) since Edwards (1929). The two species are separated by both morphology and partial COI sequences (DNA barcodes). An additional single male specimen shows pairwise genetic distances to C. suecicus and C. longivirgatus sp. n. as high as those between the latter two species, thus may represent a third European member in this species group. Morphologically, however, that male is inseparable from those of C. suecicus.

Abstract:Four new species belonging to the genus Chaetocladius, known to occur in Italy, are here described as adult males: C. aedeagovirgatus sp. nov., C. subalpinus sp. nov., C. ticinoi sp. nov., and C. valdostanus sp. nov. C. aedeagolobatus is characterized by a robust aedeagal lobe, C. subalpinus and C. valdostanus by a characteristic inferior volsella, C. ticinoi by a tubercle on the basis of gonostylus. Abstract:Four new species of the genus Chaetocladius s. str. (C. berythensis sp. n., C. callauensis sp. n., C. guardiolei sp. n. and C. parerai sp. n.) are diagnosed and described based on material collected in some glacial springs and small streams located at high altitude (1800-2300 m). While C. berythensis sp. n. is described only as male adult from the upper basin of the Beirut River (Lebanon Mount, Western range, Mount Sannine), C. callauensis sp. n. C. guardiolei sp. n. and C. parerai sp. n. are described as male adult accompanied by descriptions of tentatively associated male pupal exuviae from the upper basin of the Mantet River and Soques stream (eastern Pyrenees, West France). Additional taxonomic notes including illustrations and brief descriptions of 10 taxa/species based on male adults, male pharate adults and pupal exuviae collected in glacial springs, peat bogs and streams located at high altitude are provided. On the basis of characters in the male adult, only C. berythensis sp. n. keys to the laminatus-group, which is reported for the first time from the Levantine sub-region. Based on the unusual shape of both inferior volsella and gonostylus, the four new Chaetocladius species each belong to local biogeographic elements: C. berythensis sp. n. to a ‘Levantine element’, while C. callauensis sp. n., C. guardiolei sp. n. and C. parerai sp. n. belong to a ‘Pyrenean element’. All of the four new species are considered to be relict representatives of glacial helocrenes and cold stenothermic streams. Such species may be biological indicators and biogeographic representatives of global warming and local climate change.

Abstract:Chironomids of the subgenus Chaetocladius s. str. from the Amur River basin are revised using both morphological characters and molecular data. Three new species, C. egorych sp. nov., C. lopatinskiy sp. nov. and C. yavorskayae sp. nov., are described and figured. The pupa of C. fedotkin is described for the first time. Adult males of C. ligni and C. piger, little-known in the Far East, are redescribed and annotated, and key to males of the Chaetocladius s. str. from the Amur River basin is provided. A reference 658 bp barcode sequence from a fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) was used as a tool for species delimitation. Comparisons with corresponding regions of COI between 5 species in the subgenus produced K2P genetic distances of 8.3–12.6%, values well associated with interspecific variation. Molecular data were also used for the reconstruction of the phylogenetic relationships within the subgenus Chaetocladius s. str.

Abstract:The new species Chaetocladius makarchenkovi, subfamily Orthocladinae, is described on the basis of examination of adult males found on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago (Yuzhnyi Island, Pankov Peninsula, Gribovaya Bay). According to the structure of the head, thorax, and anal point of the hypopygium, the species is closely related to Ch. perennis (Meigen), but differs from it in the form and structure of the lower inner volsella, gonostylus, virga of the hypopygium, in the presence of shortened setae on the antennal flagellum, in the lower antenna index AR, and in the smaller number of Ac and Dc setae on the mesonotum.

Abstract:North American specimens of the chironomid midge, Chaetocladius stamfordi (Johannsen), were found to fall within the range of morphological variation of a Palaearctic species, Chaetocladius piger (Goetghebuer). Chaetocladius stamfordi was determined to be a junior synonym, and a lectotype and paralectotype were designated for C. piger. A wide Holarctic distribution was documented and some aspects of ecology briefly discussed.

Abstract:The recent description of the scolopendromorph centipede Scolopendra paradoxa Doménech, 2018 raised questions concerning the morphological limits of its closest relative S. spinosissima Kraepelin, 1903. Following the works of this author and other evidence, the specimens making up the type series of S. spinosissima and a lectotype are fixed, redescribed, and illustrated; these are then compared with this species' unique available voucher and with S. paradoxa type material. Specimens making up the S. spinosissima type series are fixed including only four of the five individuals stored in the collection of Zoological Museum of Hamburg and, the voucher is identified as S. spinosissima. Its sister species, S. paradoxa , is confirmed as a morphologically and molecularly distinguishable taxon. Additionally, new data on the S. spinosissima type series are provideda and observations involving the excluded original type, reidentified as Ethmostigmus rubripes rubripes (Brandt, 1840), are given. Finally, the presence of S. multidens Newport, 1844 in the Philippines is proposed as dubious and a revised key for the Scolopendra of this archipelago is presented.

Abstract:The description of Acnemia sibirica was published by G.P. Ostroverkhova in her 1979 monograph. The species, however, was mistakenly given as it had been described in 1978. Moreover, it was not explicitly indicated as a new species (except in the legend for the figure of male terminalia), and type specimens were not designated. Evidently, due to confusion with the original description, the species was not mentioned in the recent literature and was not included in the online taxonomic databases. Anyway, the name complies with the availability criteria according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, and hence the species should be treated as Acnemia sibirica Ostroverkhova, 1979. The identity of the species can be reliably established based on the original figures by G.P. Ostroverkhova and on preserved slides. The species is here redescribed, and illustrations of the male terminalia for both type and new specimens are provided. Lectotype and paralectotypes are designated. New data on species’ distribution are reported.

Abstract:A new subgenus, Nothorthocladius, of the genus Orthocladius v. d. Wulp and a new genus Yaethauma which bears a superficially resemblance to Collartomyia Goethgebuer of the subfamily Chironominae are erected, and the subgeneric and generic diagnoses are provided here. Orthocladius (Nothorthocladius) brevistylus sp. n. is described based on a single male and Yaethauma longiligulata sp. n. is described in both sexes. The former species is characterized from any other orthoclads by having the short gonostylus fused to gonocoxite. The species is treated as a member belonging to the genus Orthocladius based on various morphological features. The latter species is distinguishable from two other members of Collartomyia species by having the antepronotal lobe distinctly narrowed dorsally, the long ligula being sclerotized on the dorsolateral surface along outer margin, and the distinctly bifurcated pulvilli. Furthermore, in the male, the long and spindle-shaped anal point, the short and ovoid gonostylus, the long and distally expanded median appendage, the short and dorsolaterally elongate laterosternite, the plate-like apodeme lobe and the spermatheca bearing sclerotized neck in the female will be sufficiently separated from any described genera clearly.

Abstract:Pampacladius gaucho Donato, Zanotto, Arpellino et Siri gen. nov., sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on all life stages from the Pampean province in Central Argentina. This genus can be separated from all other male adult Orthocladiinae by absence of virga; anal point placed slightly forward on tergite IX with apical part short and reduced to a hump with posterior elongation; more than two scalpellate median acrostichals; bare wings; straight Cu 1 ; presence of a squamal fringe; and well developed pulvilli. Molecular analyses support the status of Pampacladius as a new genus within Orthocladiinae. The analyses place the new form closely related to Echinocladius Cranston, Paulfreemania Cranston and Krosch, genus 'Australia' (called by Cranston after Brundin's notebook name for two very distinctive pupae), Tonnoirocladius Cranston, and Naonella Boothroyd. Event-based biogeographical analysis found this clade as part of a major clade whose ancestral distribution was on continents that were part of Gondwana. This 'late Gondwanan' clade was dated in 76.4 Mya (95% HPD: 90.4–61.5 Mya) and in such scenario several events took place linking Pampacladius gaucho with other species belonging to Austral areas, mainly Australia and New Zealand. Abstract:Two new species of the genus Chaetocladius are described, C. (s. str.) coppai sp. nov. as male adult and C. (s. str.) diai sp. nov. as male adult and pupa. The descriptions are based on the material collected at glacial alpine springs and small streams located in the Maritime French Alps and the Swiss Alps for C. coppai sp. nov., and the Mount Lebanon range for C. diai sp. nov. According to the characters of the adult males, C. coppai sp. nov. belongs to the laminatus-group, while C. diai sp. nov. is close to C. elegans Makarchenko et Makarchenko, 2001. The comments on the taxonomic position, ecology and geographical distribution of the new species are given.

Abstract:A new genus Acoptodera gen. n. is described to place Coptodera piligera Chaudoir, 1883 previously attributed to genus Trichocoptodera Louwerens, 1958, as well as new subgenus Pericalocephala subgen. n. to place remarkable new species from Vietnam: Acoptodera (Pericalocephala) paradoxa sp. n. By the presence of hairs on head, pronotum and elytra, new genus is similar with Trichocoptodera Louwerens, 1958, but can be easely distinguished by flattened pronotum with wide lateral margins and by rounded elytra with serrate edges and fringe of setae on the sides. The status and characters of genera thought to be near relatives of Coptodera genus-group, are briefly discussed. Images of habitus and genitalia are provided.

Abstract:Nearctic species of Incertella Sabrosky, 1980 are transferred to Microcercis Beschovski, 1978 due to the synonymy of the type species I. incerta (Becker, 1912) with M. albipalpis (Meigen, 1830). The ten species treated are M. albipalpis (Meigen) = M. incerta (Becker) syn. n., M. bispina (Malloch), M. dorsata (Loew), M. infesta (Becker), M. insularis (Malloch), and M. minor (Adams), [all are new combinations], and the four new species: M. laytoni sp. n., M. murphyi sp. n., M. johanni sp. n. and M. trifeminarum sp. n. A generic diagnosis is provided, as are species diagnoses and descriptions and a key to Nearctic Microcercis. Lectotypes are designated for M. infesta, and M. insularis. Incertella ovalis (Adams) is moved to Conioscinella Duda comb. n. Photographs illustrating the habitus of all species, male genitalia photos of most species, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) photos of specific features are provided. Material from Canada, the United States, and Mexico is recorded.

Abstract:The taxonomic identities of the two largely neglected Scolopendra Linnaeus, 1758 species from continental Spain, S. viridipes Dufour, 1820 and S. chlorotes L. Koch in Rosenhauer, 1856, are examined in this paper. After efforts in locating both species' type series in eight European institutions, the specimens are considered to be lost. Consequently, the identifications of both taxa were approximated by collating their descriptions with the morphology of all other sympatric Scolopendromorpha . Then, compatible topotypes for both species were collected, and among these a neotype for each taxon were selected and compared with the type series of their respective closest relatives. Finally, both S. viridipes and S. chlorotes are proposed to be conspecific with S. oraniensis Lucas, 1846. Therefore, the name S. viridipes is here established as (senior) syn. nov. and nomen oblitum of S. oraniensis , S. oraniensis is declared as nomen protectum , and S. chlorotes (junior) syn. nov. is reallocated to S. oraniensis . Moreover, the specimens making up the type series of S. oraniensis are also indicated and redescribed, the genitalia are illustrated for the first time, and its specific epithet is briefly reviewed, remaining unaltered in respect of its original spelling.
