Abstract:Hydration-based techniques involve hydrate formation in complicated systems containing ions and organics. Consequently, it is necessary to understand the molecular behavior of hydrate nucleation and growth in such solutions. This work shows that the hydrate-growth rate in a system containing methylene blue molecules does not necessarily accelerate on increasing the subcooling. Unexpected amorphous cage clusters were observed at a lower temperature of 240 K. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to propose that these amorphous clusters act as mass transfer barriers disturbing the agglomeration of solutes. Herein, hydrate growth was accompanied with the exclusion of methylene blue molecules. Although methylene blue can instantaneously reside in the cavity a half-cage structure, they were subsequently replaced by CO2 molecules. Notably, chloride ions were observed to participate in cage building (4(2)5(10), 5(12) , and 5(12)6(2) cages) by bonding with the oxygen atoms of the surrounding water molecules. This phenomenon shows an interaction between the methylene blue molecules and hydrate cages during the exclusion process. These results support the current understanding on hydrate formation in the presence of ion-containing organics and could help improve kinetics-dependent applications in separation process.
Molecular simulation of imperfect structure I CO2 hydrate growth in brine

Abstract:In order to investigate the viability of carbon dioxide (CO2) storage in seawater, molecular dynamics techniques were employed to study the dynamic evolution of CO2 hydrate in saline water. The simulation was conducted under specific conditions: a temperature of 275 K, a pressure of 10 MPa and a simulated marine environment achieved using a 3.4 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. The total simulation time was 1000 ns. The results of the simulation indicate that the pre-existence of CO2 hydrate crystals as seeds leads to rapid growth of CO2 hydrate. However, analysis of the F3 and F4 order parameters reveals that the hydrate does not meet the standard values of the perfect structure I (sI) type, confirming the existence of an imperfect structure during the simulation. Additionally, the changes in the number of different phase states of water molecules during the hydrate growth process shows that there are always some liquid water molecules, which means some water molecules fail to form solid water cages. Further investigation suggests that the presence of Na+ and Cl- hampers the hydrogen bonds between water molecules, resulting in incomplete cage structures. By analyzing the density variations in the system, it is observed that CO2 hydrate, with a density of around 1.133 g cm-3, forms rapidly, surpassing the average density of seawater. This density increase facilitates the efficient and swift containment of CO2 on the seabed, thereby supporting the feasibility of the CO2 storage theory.

Abstract:CO2 hydrate technology can be applied to seawater desalination. However, the kinetics of CO2 hydrate formation were inhibited in the aqueous solution with inorganic salts, and the kinetic mechanism of CO2 hydrate formation for inorganic salts with different metal cations and anions was still unclear. In this work, CO2 hydrate nucleation and growth were studied in aqueous solutions of metal chlorides. Instead of Na+ and K+ ions, CO2 hydrate nucleation was promoted in the presence of Ni2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ and Fe3+ ions due to the co‐ordination bonds between transition metal ions and water molecules to enhance the formation of the critical crystal nuclei. The induction time was increased by 61.1% in aqueous solution with 0.32 mol/L NaCl, while it was shortened by 55.6% in FeCl3 aqueous solution at the same concentration of Cl− anions. In the process of CO2 hydrate growth, Cl− ions played a more important role than the metal ions in affecting the stability of CO2 hydrate cages. The gas storage capacity was reduced by 10.3% in the presence of NaCl, and was lower than that of other metal chlorides. Cl− anions were absorbed on the hydrate surface and involved in hydrate cages to inhibit the hydrate growth due to the hydrogen bonds between the Cl− ions and water molecules of the hydrate cages. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The climate system is changing and becoming warmer due to the consumption of fossil energy, which results in a large quantity of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. The hydrate formation process can encapsulate guest molecules in hydrate cages, enabling a promising storage of CO2 in the form of hydrate under the seafloor. Here, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to validate the hydrate-based gas storage method for low-concentration flue gas. The direct phase method was applied at four target pressures to obtain the melting temperature of mixed gas hydrate in the presence of SI hydrate seeds that are fully occupied by CO2 molecules. Hydrate growth simulations showed that a proper subcooling can improve the hydrate growth rate and final occupancy of CO2 molecules in newly formed hydrate cages. The mass transfer process could impact the hydrate growth rate, with a higher pressure improving the concentrations of N-2 and CO2 in the free water. This enhanced the hydrate growth at both 260 K and low subcooling temperatures. The influence of pressure and subcooling on cage selectivity presented a different tendency for CO2 and N-2. A higher pressure decreased the selectivity of CO2 for 5(12)6(2), and lower subcooling assisted CO2 in entering 5(12)6(2) cages easily. Interestingly, the CO2 occupancy at 260 K is larger than that of the simulations at the melting temperature. The results could be of help in revealing the behavior of case filling during hydrate formation from a gas mixture.
Effect of MgCl2 on CO2 Sequestration As Hydrates in Marine Environment: A Thermodynamic and Kinetic Investigation with Morphology Insights

Abstract:Oceanic hydrate-based CO2 sequestration (HBCS) holds great promise for achieving carbon neutrality. However, the presence of inorganic salts, particularly MgCl2 besides NaCl, in seawater can significantly impact the formation rate and the stability of CO2 hydrate. In this study, experimental investigations were conducted to examine the thermodynamics, kinetics, and the resulting morphological features of CO2 hydrate in the presence of MgCl2, covering mass fractions ranging from 0 to 5.0 wt%. The experimental findings reveal that MgCl2 exerts a thermodynamic inhibitory effect with its inhibitory capacity increasing with higher mass fractions. The solubility model of CO2 in MgCl2 solution was modified, demonstrating a gradual weakening of CO2 solubility as MgCl2 mass fraction increases. Additionally, the growth kinetics of CO2 hydrate decreases with increasing MgCl2 mass fraction. Regarding CO2 hydrate morphology, it was observed that at low mass fractions of MgCl2 (<1.0 wt%), a dense hydrate film rapidly formed at the gas-liquid interface after CO2 hydrate nucleation, hindering the further conversion of CO2 into hydrate. Conversely, at higher mass fractions (>3.0 wt%), CO2 hydrate exhibits a more porous and slurry-like structure, facilitating more gas-liquid contact and mass transfer, thereby enhancing the conversion of CO2 into hydrate. During hydrate dissociation, a salt-removal effect associated with CO2 hydrate formation was observed, leading to the accumulation of concentrated electrolyte (MgCl2) and facilitating CO2 hydrate dissociation. These findings have implications for understanding the CO2 hydrate formation and dissociation in the presence of MgCl2 relevant in the subsea environment and can contribute to the development of effective hydrate-based CO2 sequestration strategies.

Abstract:The current greenhouse effect caused by massive CO2 accumulation must be addressed urgently. Because of the ocean's enormous capacity, the high density of CO2 hydrate, and the high stability of CO2 sequestration in hydrate form, the process of hydrate generation can trap CO2 molecules into the lattice of water molecules and is considered for the sequestration of CO2 in hydrate form in the ocean. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to investigate the kinetic behavior of CO2 hydrate growth in ion-containing electrolyte solutions. The mechanism of salt ion effect on hydrate growth during pressure changes is investigated. The simulations show that in the presence of salt ions, the hydrate growth rate fluctuates significantly, despite the fact that a greater driving force can facilitate the hydrate growth process. Higher pressures increase guest molecule occupancy in the hydrate cage, while the saline environment causes competition for water molecules between the hydrate cage and salt ions, increasing the proportion of empty cages. Lower pressures and the presence of salt ions reduce CO2 molecules' selectivity for the smaller 512 cages, creating a barrier to hydrate growth. The findings of the study look at the microscopic mechanism of CO2 hydrate generation in seawater and serve as a guide for future implementation of hydrate method CO2 sequestration technology in the marine environment.
Mechanical Properties of CH4–CO2 Heteroclathrate Hydrates

Abstract:The geomechanical stability of CO2-injected gas-hydrate-bearing sediments is dictated by the mechanical stability of CH4-CO2 heteroclathrate hydrates. Herein, tensile mechanical properties of CH4-CO2 heteroclathrate hydrates are for the first time explored using classical molecular dynamics simulations. It is revealed that CH4-CO2 heteroclathrate hydrates show apparent variations in mechanical properties with the ratio of CO2-to-CH4 and loading direction. As the stretching is perpendicular to the heterointerface, both the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio follow the rule of mixture. Intriguingly, as the straining is parallel to the heterointerface, heteroclathrate hydrates exhibit higher Young's modulus over mechanically robust CH4 hydrate, originating from nonuniform Poisson effect induced transverse tension in the CO2 hydrate region. Depending on the loading direction, heteroclathrate hydrates are able to show brittle or ductile fracture behavior, and fracture initiates via the dissociation of water cages at the weak CO2 hydrate region instead of heterointerfaces. This study provides a key database of mechanical properties of CO2 injected CH4 hydrates and molecular insights into the mechanical stability of CO2 -contained CH4 hydrate under reservoir deformation. The formation of heteroclathrate hydrates occurs when carbon dioxide replaces part of the methane molecules in the clathrate hydrate. Also, it has unusual mechanical properties.
Effects of the CO₂ Guest Molecule on the sI Clathrate Hydrate Structure

Abstract:This paper analyzes the structural, energetic and mechanical properties of carbon dioxide hydrate clathrates calculated using finite cluster and periodic ab initio density-functional theory methodologies. Intermolecular interactions are described by the exchange-hole dipole moment method. The stability, gas saturation energetics, guest-host interactions, cage deformations, vibrational frequencies, and equation of state parameters for the low-pressure sI cubic phase of the CO₂@H₂O clathrate hydrate are presented. Our results reveal that: (i) the gas saturation process energetically favors complete filling; (ii) carbon dioxide molecules prefer to occupy the larger of the two cages in the sI structure; (iii) blue shifts occur in both the symmetric and antisymmetric stretching frequencies of CO₂ upon encapsulation; and (iv) free rotation of guest molecules is restricted to a plane parallel to the hexagonal faces of the large cages. In addition, we calculate the librational frequency of the hindered rotation of the guest molecule in the plane perpendicular to the hexagonal faces. Our calculated spectroscopic data can be used as signatures for the detection of clathrate hydrates in planetary environments.
The coexistence of multiple hydrates triggered by varied H2 molecule occupancy during CO2/H2 hydrate dissociation

Abstract:The participation of small H2 molecules in hydrate formation generally includes single and multiple occupancy, and the state could vary frequently due to their high fluidity. In this study, distinctly split DSC peaks for hydrate dissociation in constant CO2/H2 gas phase systems were found, which generally means the coexistence of several hydrates with different phase equilibrium temperatures. Based on the results of hydrate equilibrium decomposition conditions and decomposition enthalpies, we attributed the occurrence of this peculiar phenomenon mainly to different occupation patterns of H2 molecules in hydrate cages. However, several occupancies in the mild conditions of this study may be metastable, which was significantly related to H2 escape. Raman results demonstrated the existence of single occupancy of H2 molecule in both of the 512 and 51262 cages. In addition, co-existing of CO2 and H2 in 51262 cage may also be detected. The effects of hydrate formation time and morphology on the split DSC peaks further indicated the occupation-related H2 molecule aggregation and probabilistic escape. The discovery in this work may provide some new insights into the deeper understanding of the physical/chemical properties behind clathrate hydrate in the future.

Abstract:CO 2 carbon sequestration in marine gas hydrate occurrence areas is a potential way to mitigate the continued growth of CO 2 in the atmosphere. The organic matters of marine sediment can affect the phase equilibrium conditions of CO 2 hydrate in salt system, and the organic salt system in pore medium has effect on the nucleation growth of CO 2 hydrate. The organic matters on the surface of the sediment is mainly composed of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and unsaturated hydrocarbon organic compounds, and these polar functional groups weaken the inhibitory effect of salt ions on hydrates through coordination bonds and Ca ion complexation. The nucleation kinetics of CO 2 hydrate under organic salt system in pore medium in marine environment is an important parameter determining the carbon sequestration of hydrate. In addition, experimental results show that clay surface organic matters (CSOM) can reduce the surface tension of pore water, and thus pore water migration occurs during hydrate growth and expansion. The basic background in our findings will bring a much better recognition of phase equilibrium conditions among the offshore marine sediment CO 2 sequestration process and further assess the location of potential marine CO 2 storage sites.

Abstract:The storage of CO2 in the form of gas hydrate is becoming common place in the field of carbon capture and storage. Natural gas hydrate deposits are typically rich in clay minerals, yet their potential effect on CO2 hydrate nucleation and dissociation is rarely elucidated. In the present work, the nucleation and dissociation of CO2 hydrate in the inter- and intra-particle pores of dioctahedral smectite particles were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the hydrate nucleation clearly occurred in the inter-particle pores, whereas clathrate-like structures were formed in the intra-particle pores or on the edge surface of smectite. The properties of smectite, specifically the layer charge distribution and the type of exchangeable cations, are the main factors affecting the nucleation and dissociation of CO2 hydrate by changing the structural ordering of water molecules. The diffusion of CO2 molecules into the intra-particle pores enhances the formation of clathrate-like structures with increasing water content, but it does not increase the structural ordering of water molecules. Increasing the temperature or adding electrolytes in the smectite particles have accelerated the CO2 hydrate dissociation. Overall, the nucleation and dissociation mechanisms of CO2 hydrate in the linked inter- and intra-particle pores of dioctahedral smectite particles not only substantially affects the carbon storage and methane extraction in hydrate reservoirs, but also have potentially important impacts on pore fluids transportation in marine sediments.

Abstract:The clathrate hydrate memory effect is a fascinating phenomenon with potential applications in CCUS, gas separation, and gas storage as it can accelerate the secondary formation of clathrate hydrate. However, the underlying mechanism of this effect remains unclear. To gain a better understanding of the mechanism, we conducted molecular dynamic simulations to simulate the initial formation and reformation processes of methane hydrate. In this work, we showed the evolution process of hydrate residual structures into hydrate cages. The simulation results indicate that the residual structures are closely related to the existence of hydrate memory effect, and the higher the contribution of hydrate dissociated water to the hydrate nucleation process, the faster the hydrate nucleation. After hydrate dissociation, the locally ordered structures still exist after hydrate dissociation and can promote the formation of cluster structures, thus accelerating hydrate nucleation. Additionally, the nucleation process of hydrate and the formation process of clusters are inseparable. The size of clusters composed of cup-cage structures is critical for hydrate nucleation. The residence time at high temperature after hydrate decomposition will affect the strength of the hydrate memory effect. Our simulation results provide microscopic insights into the occurrence of the hydrate memory effect and shed light on the hydrate reformation process at the molecular scale.

Abstract:Knowledge of the microscopic behavior of CO2 hydrates in oceanic sediments is crucial to evaluate the efficiency and stability of hydrate-based CO2 sequestration in oceans. Here, systematic molecular dynamics simulations are executed to investigate the growth and dissociation of CO2 hydrates, and the mechanical instability of CO2 hydrate-Illite interface in the brine-urea-Illite system. Simulation results show that the CO2 hydrate growth is jointly affected by the confined space, Illite surface properties, and presence of urea. Specifically, the interfacial H2O and the ion layer on the Illite surface hinder the growth of CO2 hydrate crystals toward Illite surfaces. Urea molecules can bind salt ions and increase CO2 concentrations in the water, thus kinetically promoting CO2 hydrate growth. The dissociation of the CO2 hydrate is affected by Illite surface properties and the CO2 hydrate structure. CO2 hydrate starts from the regions where hydrate particles are minimally in contact and extends on both sides. The mechanical tension and compression of the CO2 hydrate-Illite interface exhibit nonlinear characteristics by changing the hydrogen bonds and the CO2 hydrate structure. The molecular insight into the microscopic behavior of CO2 hydrates in the brine-urea-Illite system contributes to a broader understanding of hydrate-based CO2 sequestration.

Abstract:Due to high efficiency and low cost, hydrate-based desalination is investigated as a pretreatment method for seawater desalination. To improve the formation rate of hydrates, the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on CO2 hydrate formation from a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was measured at 275 K and 3 MPa. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cryo-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) were used to measure the crystal structure and micromorphology of the formed hydrates. The results showed that the induction time of CO2 hydrate formation reduced from 32 to 2 min when SDS concentration increased from 0.01 to 0.05%, the hydrate conversion rate increased from 12.06 to 23.32%, and the remaining NaCl concentration increased from 3.997 to 4.515 wt.%. However, as the SDS concentration surpassed 0.05 wt.%, the induction time increased accompanied by a decrease in the hydrate conversion rate. XRD showed that the CO2 hydrate was a structure I hydrate, and SDS had no influence on the hydrate structure. However, cryo-SEM images revealed that SDS promoted the formation of hydrates by increasing the specific surface area of the formed hydrates and folds; rods and clusters could be found on the surface of the CO2 hydrate. Thus, the best SDS concentration for promoting CO2 hydrate formation was approximately 0.05 wt.%; desalination was most efficient at this concentration.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations were used to compare the importance of the molecular diffusion process and the Ih ice interface for CO2 hydrate nucleation under mild conditions. CO2 molecules were adsorbed on the ice surface, resulting in an increasing number of CO2 molecules around the ice interface for a short time. However, as a result of the low driving force, the ice interface vanished quickly. The 512 and 51262 cages accounted for the majority of hydrate cages. In the case of empty cages, the 512 cage was more likely to exist in the hydrate cluster. Furthermore, only the largest hydrate cluster grew and existed in the system, while separate small clusters had shorter lifetimes and eventually vanished. Our theoretical findings served as a useful guideline for understanding the molecular diffusion behaviors of guest molecules during the CO2 hydrate growth process at a mild simulation condition with the ice interface.

Abstract:CO 2 storage in marine sediments in the form of solid hydrates with high storage capacity and stability is a promising approach for the control of greenhouse gas pollution. Specifically, clay is much abundant in marine minerals, and multiple forces exist between fine clay particles suspended in seawater, significantly affecting the hydrate formation and dissociation behavior. This study investigates the phase transition performance of CO 2 hydrates with or without montmorillonite and illite particles using low-field nuclear magnetic resonance. According to the DLVO theory, the total interaction potential between the montmorillonite particles reached 358 k b T, with that between illite particles being only 43 k b T. It was found that water in large pores was preferentially consumed during hydrate formation, with clay particles significantly promoting the conversion of water into hydrate. In seawater-montmorillonite and seawater-illite solutions, a higher number of water molecules was detected in the small and medium pores, respectively. Notably, the initial pore structure changed upon hydrate dissociation, with more medium pores formed. This effect was enhanced in the seawater-montmorillonite solutions and weakened in seawater-illite solutions. The findings could further clarify the formation and dissociation kinetics of CO 2 hydrates in the presence of clay particles, as well as the geological structure evolution and safety of CO 2 hydrate storage under the seafloor.

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the hydration mechanism of salt ions on the methane hydrate formation would be beneficial for the interpretation of the reservoir formation mechanism and the development and utilization of natural gas hydrate. In this work, the hydration of salt ions (Na + and Cl - ) on the methane hydrate formation is investigated using experiments, quantum mechanics (QM) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results show the salts ions firstly influence the orientation of the H 2 O molecules and then influence the OH symmetrical stretching vibrations by impacting the tetrahedral arrangement of H 2 O molecules after attaching the hydration-shell layers. The coupling process of the hydration and the mass transfer of salt ions influence the methane hydrate formation.

Abstract:CO2 hydrate nucleation on the surfaces of clay minerals is important because it is related to CO2 storage in marine sediments. In this study, heterogeneous nucleation of CO2 hydrates on the external surfaces of clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and talc) was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that hydrate nucleation occurred far away from the surfaces of montmorillonite and illite. No hydrate nucleation occurs on the siloxane surface of kaolinite and talc due to the formation of CO2 nanodroplets. Of particular interest is that the clathratelike structures formed on the siloxane surface of chlorite due to its electric charge. Additionally, the clathratelike structures were also formed between the interfacial water and hydroxyl surfaces of kaolinite and chlorite. The results of this study clearly indicate that the surface groups of clay minerals significantly affect CO2 hydrate nucleation by changing the distribution of CO2 and water molecules, which finally influences CO2 storage in deposits and have profound impacts on related geochemical processes, such as interfacial interactions between water molecules and clay surfaces.
