Abstract:Atomically dispersed transition metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts are emerging as low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. However, a cost-effective and scalable synthesis strategy for these catalysts is still required, as well as a greater understanding of their mechanisms. Herein, iron, nitrogen co-doped carbon spheres (Fe@NCS) have been prepared via hydrothermal carbonization and high-temperature post carbonization. It is determined that FeN4 is the main form of iron existing in the obtained Fe@NCS. Two different precursors containing Fe2+ and Fe3+ are compared. Both chemical and structural differences have been observed in catalysts starting from Fe2+ and Fe3+ precursors. Fe2+@NCS-A (starting with Fe2+ precursor) shows better catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. This catalyst is studied in an anion exchange membrane fuel cell. The high open-circuit voltage demonstrates the potential approach for developing high-performance, low-cost fuel cell catalysts.
High‐Performance Intermetallic Pt3Co/C Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction Synthesized by Pre‐Lithiation Method

Abstract:Fuel cells are recognized as promising alternatives to existing conventional energy systems for a sustainable future. However, the synthesis of efficient and robust platinum (Pt) based catalysts remains a challenge for practical fuel cell applications. Herein, the Pt3Co/C nanoparticles with about 4.45 nm are firstly prepared by a pre–lithiation–deposition strategy on C carrier and used as efficient electrocatalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction. Notably, after heat treatment at 600 °C, the obtained Pt3Co/C–600 catalyst shows excellent mass and specific activities (MA and SA) of 0.69 A mgPt–1 and 1.01 mA cmPt–2, respectively, which are more than one order of magnitude higher than that of Pt/C–600. In particular, after accelerated durability testing with 20k cycles, the durability of the Pt3Co/C–600 catalyst (98.3% retention of MA) is much higher than that of Pt3Co/C–600 without pre–lithiation (42.5% retention of MA). The alloying of Pt and Co and the use of pre–lithiation to enable strong interactions between the carbon carriers and the Pt–Co nanoparticles contributed to the increased activity and excellent stability. This work provides a new perspective for the development of high–performance and low–cost Pt alloy electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract For the large-scale sustainable implementation of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells in vehicles, high-performance electrocatalysts with low platinum consumption are desirable for use as cathode material during the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. Here we report a carbon black-supported cost-effective, efficient and durable platinum single-atom electrocatalyst with carbon monoxide/methanol tolerance for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction. The acidic single-cell with such a catalyst as cathode delivers high performance, with power density up to 680 mW cm −2 at 80 °C with a low platinum loading of 0.09 mg Pt cm −2 , corresponding to a platinum utilization of 0.13 g Pt kW −1 in the fuel cell. Good fuel cell durability is also observed. Theoretical calculations reveal that the main effective sites on such platinum single-atom electrocatalysts are single-pyridinic-nitrogen-atom-anchored single-platinum-atom centres, which are tolerant to carbon monoxide/methanol, but highly active for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract:Fuel cells are a promising renewable energy technology that depend heavily on noble metal Pt-based catalysts, particularly for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The discovery of new, efficient non-precious metal ORR catalysts is critical for the continued development of cost-effective, high-performance fuel cells. The synthesized carbon material showed excellent electrocatalytic activity for the ORR, with half-wave potential (E1/2) and limiting current density (JL) of 0.88 V and 5.10 mA·cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte, respectively. The material has a Tafel slope of (65 mV dec-1), which is close to commercial Pt/C catalysts (60 mV dec-1). Moreover, the prepared materials exhibited excellent performance when assembled as cathodes for zinc-air batteries. The power density reached 110.02 mW cm-2 and the theoretical specific capacity was 801.21 mAh g-1, which was higher than that of the Pt/C catalyst (751.19 mAh g-1). In this study, with the assistance of Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O, we introduce an innovative approach to synthesize advanced carbon materials, achieving precise control over the material's structure and properties. This research bridges a crucial gap in material science, with potential applications in renewable energy technologies, particularly in enhancing catalysts for fuel cells.

Abstract:Abstract Efficient, durable and inexpensive electrocatalysts that accelerate sluggish oxygen reduction reaction kinetics and achieve high-performance are highly desirable. Here we develop a strategy to fabricate a catalyst comprised of single iron atomic sites supported on a nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur co-doped hollow carbon polyhedron from a metal-organic framework@polymer composite. The polymer-based coating facilitates the construction of a hollow structure via the Kirkendall effect and electronic modulation of an active metal center by long-range interaction with sulfur and phosphorus. Benefiting from structure functionalities and electronic control of a single-atom iron active center, the catalyst shows a remarkable performance with enhanced kinetics and activity for oxygen reduction in both alkaline and acid media. Moreover, the catalyst shows promise for substitution of expensive platinum to drive the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction in zinc-air batteries and hydrogen-air fuel cells.

Abstract:Exploring inexpensive and high-performance nonprecious metal catalysts (NPMCs) to replace the rare and expensive Pt-based catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for future low-temperature fuel cell devices. Herein, we developed a new type of highly efficient 3D porous Fe/N/C electrocatalyst through a simple pyrolysis approach. Our systematic study revealed that the pyrolysis temperature, the surface area, and the Fe content in the catalysts largely affect the ORR performance of the Fe/N/C catalysts, and the optimized parameters have been identified. The optimized Fe/N/C catalyst, with an interconnected hollow and open structure, exhibits one of the highest ORR activity, stability and selectivity in both alkaline and acidic conditions. In 0.1 M KOH, compared to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, the 3D porous Fe/N/C catalyst exhibits ∼6 times better activity (e.g., 1.91 mA cm-2 for Fe/N/C vs 0.32 mA cm-2 for Pt/C, at 0.9 V) and excellent stability (e.g., no any decay for Fe/N/C vs 35 mV negative half-wave potential shift for Pt/C, after 10000 cycles test). In 0.5 M H2SO4, this catalyst also exhibits comparable activity and better stability comparing to Pt/C catalyst. More importantly, in both alkaline and acidic media (RRDE environment), the as-synthesized Fe/N/C catalyst shows much better stability and methanol tolerance than those of the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. All these make the 3D porous Fe/N/C nanostructure an excellent candidate for non-precious-metal ORR catalyst in metal-air batteries and fuel cells.

Abstract:Developing economical and commercially available materials to replace precious and nondurable platinum based catalysts is a very important issue in contemporary fuel cell technology. Nanostructured carbon materials have the potential to reduce the costs, improve the fuel tolerance and scalability; however, they are limited presently by their relatively low catalytic activity. Herein, we have synthesized a new electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction derived from in situ growth of metal–organic frameworks on carbon nanotubes, followed by pyrolysis. The most efficient catalyst yielded comparable catalytic activity than commercial platinum-based catalysts and a low Tafel slope of 49mVdec−1. This excellent performance is attributable to the formation of 3D structured porous and N doped carbon/carbon nanotubular composites. High surface area and continuous catalytic layer on graphitic carbon boosts the active sites and reactivity during electrolysis.

Abstract:One of the critical issues in the industrial development of fuel cells (e.g., proton exchange membrane fuel cells, direct methanol fuel cells and biofuel cells) is the high cost, serious intermediate tolerance, anode crossover, sluggish kinetics, and poor stability of the platinum (Pt) as the preferred electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. The development of novel noble-metal-free electrocatalysts with low cost, high activity and practical durability for ORR has been considered as one of the most active and competitive fields in chemistry and materials science. In this critical review, we will summarize recent advances on engineering advanced carbon nanomaterials with different dimensions for the rational design and synthesis of noble-metal-free oxygen reduction electrocatalysts including heteroatom-doped carbon nanomaterials, transition metal-based nanoparticle (NP)-carbon nanomaterial composites and especially the stable iron carbide (Fe3C)-based NP-carbon nanomaterial composites. Introducing advanced carbon nanomaterials with high specific surface area and stable structure into the noble-metal-free ORR field has not only led to a maximized electrocatalyst surface area for the electron transfer but also resulted in enhanced electrocatalyst stability for long-term operation. Therefore, the rational design and synthesis of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts based on heteroatoms, transition metal-based NPs and Fe3C-based NP functionalized carbon nanomaterials are of special relevance for their ORR applications, and represents a rapidly growing branch of research. The demonstrated examples in this review will open new directions on designing and optimizing advanced carbon nanomaterials for the development of extremely active and durable earth-abundant cathodic catalysts for fuel cell applications.

Abstract:Searching for an efficient, durable, and low cost catalyst toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of paramount importance for the application of fuel cell technology. Herein, PtFeCoNiCu high-entropy alloy nanoparticles (PFCNC-HEA) is reported as electrocatalyst toward ORR. It shows remarkable ORR catalytic mass activity of 1.738 A mg-1 Pt at 0.90 V, which is 15.8 times higher than that of the state-of-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. It also exhibits outstanding stability with negligible voltage decay (3 mV) after 10k cycles accelerated durability test. High ORR activity is ascribed to the ligand effect caused by polymetallic elements, the optimization of the surface electronic structure, and the formation of multiple active sites on the surface. In the proton exchange membrane fuel cell setup, this cell delivers a power density of up to 1.380 W cm-2 with a cathodic Pt loading of 0.03 mgPt cm-2, demonstrating a promising catalyst design direction for highly efficient ORR.

Abstract:Catalysts composed of isolated single Fe atoms coordinated to graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) dispersed on hierarchical porous N-doped carbon polyhedra (Fe-g-C3N4/HPNCPs) were successfully prepared. The optimized catalyst, Fe-g-C3N4/HPNCP-0.8, showed excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction under alkaline conditions with a half-wave potential of 0.902 V, significantly outperforming commercial Pt/C, as well as high durability. The high performance stems from the synergistic effect of the atomically dispersed Fe-N2 sites and the advantages of the hierarchical porous structure for promoting mass transport and improving the accessibility of the active sites.

Abstract:Exploring non-precious-metal catalysts (NPMCs) for highly-efficient oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) in fuel cells holds great potential to ease the global energy challenge. Recent developments regarding stateof- the-art Fe-N-C catalysts in terms of precursor development, synthesis innovation, and active site identification are compelling. Here, an efficient and sustainable Fe-N-C catalyst was successfully synthesized by temperature-programmed N-2-pyrolysis from a ferrous ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelate. The unique structural properties were characterized by a wide existence of FeN4/C species encapsulated by a N-C coat, multiple porous morphologies, and a defective graphitic matrix, all of which greatly enhanced their intrinsic conductivities and prevented the aggregation of active moieties. The best Fe-N-C-800 catalysts promoted the ORR peak potential to -0.21 V with a nearly four-electron transfer pathway, only facilitating similar to 14% H2O2 production. Both the Mossbauer fingerprints and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis revealed the origin of the ORR features derived from the structural compositions and corresponding hyperfine interaction. Interestingly, the embedding of oxygen in the Fe-N-C structure was found favorable for boosting durability and methanol endurance, which also hints at a strategy for rationally designing and producing promising ORR electrocatalysts from proper approaches and precursors.

Abstract:Nitrogen-coordinated single atom iron sites (FeN 4 ) embedded in carbon (Fe–N–C) are the most active platinum group metal-free oxygen reduction catalysts for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. However, current Fe–N–C catalysts lack sufficient long-term durability and are not yet viable for practical applications. Here we report a highly durable and active Fe–N–C catalyst synthesized using heat treatment with ammonia chloride followed by high-temperature deposition of a thin layer of nitrogen-doped carbon on the catalyst surface. We propose that catalyst stability is improved by converting defect-rich pyrrolic N-coordinated FeN 4 sites into highly stable pyridinic N-coordinated FeN 4 sites. The stability enhancement is demonstrated in membrane electrode assemblies using accelerated stress testing and a long-term steady-state test (>300 h at 0.67 V), approaching a typical Pt/C cathode (0.1 mg Pt cm −2 ). The encouraging stability improvement represents a critical step in developing viable Fe–N–C catalysts to overcome the cost barriers of hydrogen fuel cells for numerous applications.

Abstract:The successful development of low-cost, durable electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at intermediate temperatures is critical for broad commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells. Here, we report our findings in design, fabrication, and characterization of a cobalt-free SrFeTiNiO cathode decorated with NiO nanoparticles. Exsolved from and well bonded to the parent electrode under well-controlled conditions, the NiO nanoparticles uniformly distributed on the surface of the parent electrode greatly enhance cathode performance, demonstrating ORR activity better than that of the benchmark cobalt-based BaSrCoFeO. Further, a process for regeneration of the NiO nanoparticles was also developed to mitigate potential performance degradation due to coarsening of NiO particles under practical operating conditions. As a general approach, this exsolution-dissolution of electrocatalytically active nanoparticles on an electrode surface may be applicable to the development of other high-performance cobalt-free cathodes for fuel cells and other electrochemical systems.
Durable and High-Power Iron-Based Cathodes in Competition with Platinum for Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:Atomically dispersed and nitrogen-coordinated single iron sites (FeN4) embedded in carbon (Fe-N-C) catalysts are the most promising platinum group metal (PGM)-free catalysts. However, they have yet to match their Pt counterparts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Here, we developed viable Fe-N-C catalysts, which, for the first time, demonstrated competitive activity to that of Pt/C catalysts and dramatically enhanced stability and durability under practical PEMFC operating conditions. The most active Fe-N-C catalyst achieved a record half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.915 V vs. RHE at 0.6 mgcatcm-2) and an ORR mass activity of 10.5 mA mgcat at 0.9 V in (RDE) tests, exceeding a Pt/C baseline catalyst (60 µgPt cm-2) by 40 mV in acidic electrolytes. This compelling activity of the Fe-N-C catalyst in aqueous acids on rotating disk electrode (RDE) was successfully transferred to a fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), generating an initial current density of 44.2 mA cm-2 exceeding the U.S. DOE 2025 target (i.e., 44 mA cm-2) at 0.9 VIR-free under O2. Under practical hydrogen-air conditions, record 151 mA cm-2 at 0.8 V and peak power density of 601 mW cm-2 were achieved. Importantly, we discovered that depositing nitrogen-carbon species on the catalyst surface via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) dramatically enhanced catalyst stability, evidenced by performance durability after accelerated stress tests (30 000 square-wave voltage cycles under H2/air) and long-term steady-state life tests (> 300 hours at 0.67 V). Innovative identical location-scanning transmission electron microscopy (IL-STEM) experiments confirmed that the CVD process leads to deposition of nitrogen-doped carbon onto the catalyst surfaces. Along with theoretical modeling, a reconstruction of the carbon structure adjacent to FeN4 sites leads to increased robustness against demetallation and carbon oxidation. This work opens new avenues for developing earth-abundant iron-based catalysts with extraordinary activity and stability, thus competing with Pt and addressing the cost barrier of current PEMFCs.

Abstract:Iron-based catalysts for the oxygen-reduction reaction in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells have been poorly competitive with platinum catalysts, in part because they have a comparatively low number of active sites per unit volume. We produced microporous carbon–supported iron-based catalysts with active sites believed to contain iron cations coordinated by pyridinic nitrogen functionalities in the interstices of graphitic sheets within the micropores. We found that the greatest increase in site density was obtained when a mixture of carbon support, phenanthroline, and ferrous acetate was ball-milled and then pyrolyzed twice, first in argon, then in ammonia. The current density of a cathode made with the best iron-based electrocatalyst reported here can equal that of a platinum-based cathode with a loading of 0.4 milligram of platinum per square centimeter at a cell voltage of ≥0.9 volt.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient, stable, and earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for practical energy conversion devices, especially for fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Electrocatalysts with porous structures, effective composition and easily accessible active sites are extremely desirable in this tri-phase reaction. Herein, a three-dimensional hierarchically porous N-doped carbon nanofibers anchored with well-dispersed FeCo site (FeCo@PCNF) composite electrocatalyst is fabricated by a scalable electrospinning method followed by carbonization. The hierarchically porous architecture filled with interconnected channels and interlaced porosity provides the large surface area and rich exposed active sites of FeCo@PCNFs, hence, achieving accelerated mass transfer and improved ORR electrocatalytic ability. The electrocatalyst displays a more positive onset potential of 0.97 V RHE (RHE: versus the reversible hydrogen electrode) and half-wave potential of 0.875 V RHE under alkaline conditions, superior to commercial Pt/C. Moreover, FeCo@PCNFs exhibits good stability and tolerance to methanol. Impressively, when being used as an air–cathode in primary zinc–air batteries, FeCo@PCNFs presents a higher peak power density of 289.5 mW cm −2 with excellent stability than Pt/C and most reported materials.

Abstract:The low activity and durability are still the critical barriers for non-precious metal electrocatalyst, mainly involving M-N/C (M=Fe, Co, Mn et al), applied in fuel cell. Constructing bimetallic sites has been explored as an effective method to boost the performance of the catalyst for the synergistic effect between metal atoms. However, this synergistic effect is always suppressed in acidic conditions and results in unstable catalytic performance. Here we create novel fluorinated iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co) bimetallic nanoparticles distributed on nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The fluorination strongly increased the charge density of the bimetallic catalyst and resulted in a remarkable catalytic performance with the half-wave potential of 804 mV in 0.1 M HClO4 and 1.6 times power density improvement for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell device. Importantly, the chemical and mechanical robust CNFs support improved the electric conductivity and stability of bimetallic catalysts, which leads to an ultra-stable electrocatalyst. The fuel cell voltage can keep stable even after 110 hours, instead of the continuingly decrease in the traditional M-N/C.

Abstract:Due to the excellent intrinsic activity, platinum-based materials are widely used to produce highly efficient electrocatalysts towards oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), but their ultrahigh price and poor stability severely hinder the mass production and further wide application. Alloying Pt with 3d transition metals through galvanic replacement is an effective way to reduce Pt loading based on the premise of outstanding ORR activity. In this work, to fabricate the optimal precursor for subsequent galvanic replacement, a series of carbon-supported Ni samples were firstly prepared by tuning the Ni loading amount and pyrolysis temperature. Then, the highly dispersed PtNi nanoparticles modified carbon nanohybrid (PtNi/C) with low Pt content of 2.29 wt% can be obtained, which exhibits remarkable and durable ORR activity with E1/2 of 0.841 V vs. RHE via efficient 4e- ORR process in acidic media. Moreover, it should be emphasized that the as-synthesized PtNi/C behaves the impressively high mass activity of 0.57 A/mgPt at 0.8 V, which is 9.4 times that of commercial Pt/C. It is confident that our work can offer constructive suggestions for the design and synthesis of high-performanced electrocatalysts fabricated through galvanic replacement method.
