Abstract:For a few decades running task-based language teaching appears to have been a helping hand for teachers and educators worldwide in arranging classroom agenda. For some time it has even been considered the paragon of modern educational methodology in foreign languages teaching. With this purpose an array of valuable textbooks has been created worldwide for both the teachers and language learners. Bearing in mind the statement that there is always room for perfection, this paper offers the analysis of possible benefits and drawbacks through the prism of university students’ perception of task-based language teaching and learning in terms of its effectiveness in acquiring English for academic purposes. The authors of the studies conducted a research based on a questionnaire composed for the 3-rd and 4-th year bachelor's degree students of Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University). The subject of the research is a questionnaire database filled in by 137 senior students of MGIMO University concerning their perception of task-based language teaching and learning approach as well as its applicability at various aspects of their university language classes. The study has got a number of limitations though. Firstly, it is based on one university students’ questionnaires only. Secondly, bachelor senior students exclusively participated in the research. Thirdly, only the students’ perception of task-based language teaching approach was considered, no academia participated in the survey under the consideration of the researches. The methods applied are: a questionnaire, content analysis, sampling and categorization. The findings of this study imply that MGIMO senior students are highly concerned about the task-based teaching and learning approach and consider it to be an essential part of the studies. Nevertheless, despite the worthiness of this approach students believe that at their level of language studies the role of such assignments is minor, its abuse may result in poor acquisition of the language structure and ignoring grammatical errors.
