Abstract:The synthetic-rubber O-ring seal is being used successfully for aircraft parts and general hydraulic systems in the cold district. However, satisfactory ones to be used for those conditions have not yet been produced in Japan. Therefore, tests or performance tests of trial productions have been made frequently and it is quite difficult to make these tests when the temperature is thirty or forty degrees below zero.According to JIS the cold flexibility of O-ring for industries in general is to be examined through the cold bending test, and as for those for aircrafts, that is to be tested through the cold elongation method. But both of these methods are not helpful to systematically find out the influence of temperature. The authors has made an apparatus utilizing the cold bending device. According to the experimental results, we obtained that the ratio of the diametral deflexion of O-ring to the load is connected with the hardness of O-ring measured by the JIS hardness tester for the rubber materials. Making use of this results, we propose to represent the so-called “cold flexibility” with variations of the hardness due to the difference of temperature.
