Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a PQ-norm and discuss the condition number of the generalized inverse AT,S(2). We get some results on the condition numbers with respect to AT,S(2) and constrained linear systems Ax=b,x ∈ T which are similar to the regular inverse A-1 and nonsingular linear systems Ax = b. A contribution to the condition number of the total least squares problem

Abstract:This paper concerns cheaply computable formulas and bounds for the condition number of the TLS problem. For a TLS problem with data $A$, $b$, two formulas are derived that are simpler and more compact than the known results in the literature. One is derived by exploiting the properties of Kronecker products of matrices. The other is obtained by making use of the singular value decomposition (SVD) of $[A \,\,b]$, which allows us to compute the condition number cheaply and accurately. We present lower and upper bounds for the condition number that involve the singular values of $[A \,\, b]$ and the last entries of the right singular vectors of $[A \,\, b]$. We prove that they are always sharp and can estimate the condition number accurately by no more than four times. Furthermore, we establish a few other lower and upper bounds that involve only a few singular values of $A$ and $[A \,\, b]$. We discuss how tight the bounds are. These bounds are particularly useful for large scale TLS problems since for them any formulas and bounds for the condition number involving all the singular values of $A$ and/or $[A \ b]$ are too costly to be computed. Numerical experiments illustrate that our bounds are sharper than a known approximate condition number in the literature.

Abstract:In this note, we present a unified representation and an approximation theorem for the outer inverse A\"T\",\"S^(^2^) of a matrix A, which is the matrix X satisfying XAX=X, R(X)=T, N(X)=S. Based on the new approximation theorem, we can develop several expressions and computational procedures for the generalized inverse A\"T\",\"S^(^2^), which improve the recent work on this topic.

Abstract:In this article, new upper and lower bounds for the spectral condition number are obtained. These bounds are constructed based on the Frobenius norm of some matrices related to the given matrix and its inverse. Hence, unlike some existing bounds, these new bounds are smooth functions with respect to the elements in the matrix. It is theoretically established that the new bounds are also sandwiched by the true value of the spectral condition number and its estimates using the Frobenius norms. Moreover, the bounds give the exact value of the spectral condition number when the matrix is unitary or of order less than 3. The new upper bound provided, via statistical numerical comparison, is shown to be the best when compared with existing results.

Abstract:We study ill-conditioned positive definite matrices that are disturbed by the sum of $m$ rank-one matrices of a specific form. We provide estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. When the condition number of the initial matrix tends to infinity, we bound the values of the coordinates of the eigenvectors of the perturbed matrix. Equivalently, in the coordinate system where the initial matrix is diagonal, we bound the rate of convergence of coordinates that tend to zero.

Abstract:The generalized inverse A T,S (2) of a matrix A is a {2}-inverse of A with the prescribed range T and null space S. A representation for the generalized inverse A T,S (2) has been recently developed with the condition σ (GA| T)⊂(0,∞), where G is a matrix with R(G)=T andN(G)=S. In this note, we remove the above condition. Three types of iterative methods for A T,S (2) are presented if σ(GA|T) is a subset of the open right half-plane and they are extensions of existing computational procedures of A T,S (2), including special cases such as the weighted Moore-Penrose inverse A M,N † and the Drazin inverse AD. Numerical examples are given to illustrate our results.

Abstract:It is well known the concept of the condition number $\kappa(A) = \|A\|\|A^{-1}\|$, where $A$ is a $n \times n$ real or complex matrix and the norm used is the spectral norm. Although it is very common to think in $\kappa(A)$ as "the" condition number of $A$, the truth is that condition numbers are associated to problems, not just instance of problems. Our goal is to clarify this difference. We will introduce the general concept of condition number and apply it to the particular case of real or complex matrices. After this, we will introduce the classic condition number $\kappa(A)$ of a matrix and show some known results.

Spectral Condition-Number Estimation of Large Sparse Matrices

Abstract:We describe a randomized Krylov-subspace method for estimating the spectral condition number of a real matrix A or indicating that it is numerically rank deficient. The main difficulty in estimating the condition number is the estimation of the smallest singular value \sigma_{\min} of A. Our method estimates this value by solving a consistent linear least-squares problem with a known solution using a specific Krylov-subspace method called LSQR. In this method, the forward error tends to concentrate in the direction of a right singular vector corresponding to \sigma_{\min}. Extensive experiments show that the method is able to estimate well the condition number of a wide array of matrices. It can sometimes estimate the condition number when running a dense SVD would be impractical due to the computational cost or the memory requirements. The method uses very little memory (it inherits this property from LSQR) and it works equally well on square and rectangular matrices.

Abstract:Abstract For any bounded linear operator A in a Banach space, two generalized condition numbers, k(A) and k(A) are defined in this paper. These condition numbers may be applied to the perturbation analysis for the solution of ill-posed differential equations and bounded linear operator equations in infinite dimensional Banach spaces. Different expressions for the two generalized condition numbers are discussed in this paper and applied to the perturbation analysis of the operator equation.

Abstract:This paper concerns singular value decomposition (SVD)-based computable formulas and bounds for the condition number of the Total Least Squares (TLS) problem. For the TLS problem with the coefficient matrix A and the right-hand side b, a new closed formula is presented for the condition number. Unlike an important result in the literature that uses the SVDs of both A and [A,b], our formula only requires the SVD of [A, b]. Based on the closed formula, both lower and upper bounds for the condition number are derived. It is proved that they are always sharp and estimate the condition number accurately. A few lower and upper bounds are further established that involve at most the smallest two singular values of A and of [A, b]. Tightness of these bounds is discussed, and numerical experiments are presented to confirm our theory and to demonstrate the improvement of our upper bounds over the two upper bounds due to Golub and Van Loan as well as Baboulin and Gratton. Such lower and upper bounds are particularly useful for large scale TLS problems since they require the computation of only a few singular values of A and [A, b] other than all the singular values of them.
Multiscale estimates for the condition number of non-harmonic Fourier matrices

Abstract:This paper studies the extreme singular values of non-harmonic Fourier matrices. Such a matrix of size $m\times s$ can be written as $\Phi=[ e^{-2\pi i j x_k}]_{j=0,1,\dots,m-1, k=1,2,\dots,s}$ for some set $\mathcal{X}=\{x_k\}_{k=1}^s$. Its condition number controls the stability of inversion, which is of great importance to super-resolution and nonuniform Fourier transforms. Under the assumption $m\geq 6s$ and without any restrictions on $\mathcal{X}$, the main theorems provide explicit lower bounds for the smallest singular value $\sigma_s(\Phi)$ in terms of distances between elements in $\mathcal{X}$. More specifically, distances exceeding an appropriate scale $\tau$ have modest influence on $\sigma_s(\Phi)$, while the product of distances that are less than $\tau$ dominates the behavior of $\sigma_s(\Phi)$. These estimates reveal how the multiscale structure of $\mathcal{X}$ affects the condition number of Fourier matrices. Theoretical and numerical comparisons indicate that the main theorems significantly improve upon classical bounds and recover the same rate for special cases but with relaxed assumptions.

Abstract:I revisit the condition number of computing left and right singular subspaces from [J.-G. Sun, Perturbation analysis of singular subspaces and deflating subspaces, Numer. Math. 73(2), pp. 235--263, 1996]. For real and complex matrices, I present an alternative computation of this condition number in the Euclidean distance on the input space of matrices and the chordal, Grassmann, and Procrustes distances on the output Grassmannian manifold of linear subspaces. Up to a small factor, this condition number equals the inverse minimum singular value gap between the singular values corresponding to the selected singular subspace and those not selected.

Abstract:Reliable estimates for the condition number of a large, sparse, real matrix $A$ are important in many applications. To get an approximation for the condition number $\kappa(A)$, an approximation for the smallest singular value is needed. Standard Krylov subspaces are usually unsuitable for finding a good approximation to the smallest singular value. Therefore, we study extended Krylov subspaces which turn out to be ideal for the simultaneous approximation of both the smallest and largest singular value of a matrix. First, we develop a new extended Lanczos bidiagonalization method. With this method we obtain a lower bound for the condition number. Moreover, the method also yields probabilistic upper bounds for $\kappa(A)$. The user can select the probability with which the upper bound holds, as well as the ratio of the probabilistic upper bound and the lower bound.

Abstract:In this paper, we present explicit expressions for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers of the truncated total least squares (TTLS) solution of $A\boldsymbol{x} \approx \boldsymbol{b} $ under the genericity condition, where $A$ is a $m\times n$ real data matrix and $\boldsymbol{b}$ is a real $m$-vector. Moreover, we reveal that normwise, componentwise and mixed condition numbers for the TTLS problem can recover the previous corresponding counterparts for the total least squares (TLS) problem when the truncated level of for the TTLS problem is $n$. When $A$ is a structured matrix, the structured perturbations for the structured truncated TLS (STTLS) problem are investigated and the corresponding explicit expressions for the structured normwise, componentwise and mixed condition numbers for the STTLS problem are obtained. Furthermore, the relationships between the structured and unstructured normwise, componentwise and mixed condition numbers for the STTLS problem are studied. Based on small sample statistical condition estimation (SCE), reliable condition estimation algorithms for both unstructured and structured normwise, mixed and componentwise are devised, which utilize the SVD of the augmented matrix $[A~\boldsymbol{b} ]$. The efficient proposed condition estimation algorithms can be integrated into the SVD-based direct solver for the small and medium size TTLS problem to give the error estimation for the numerical TTLS solution. Numerical experiments are reported to illustrate the reliability of the proposed estimation algorithms, which coincide with our theoretical results.
