Abstract:Although emulsion applications of microscale graphene sheets have attracted much attention recently, nanoscale graphene platelets, namely, graphene quantum dots (GQDs), have been rarely explored in interface science. In this work, we study the interfacial behaviors and emulsion phase diagrams of hydrophobic-functionalized graphene quantum dots (C 18 -GQDs). Distinctive from pristine graphene quantum dots (p-GQDs), C 18 -GQDs show several interesting surface-active properties including high emulsification efficiency in stabilizing dodecane-in-water emulsions. We then utilize the C 18 -GQDs as surfactants in miniemulsion polymerization of styrene, achieving uniform and relatively small polystyrene nanospheres. The high emulsification efficiency, low production cost, uniform morphology, intriguing photoluminescence, and extraordinary stability render C 18 -GQDs an attractive alternative in surfactant applications.

Abstract:The production of graphene with open band gaps for the manufacturing of graphene-based electronic and optical devices requires synthesis methods to either control the number of layers to enrich AB-stacked bilayer or trilayer graphene or control the extent of functionalization of monolayer graphene. Solution-phase dispersion of graphene is promising for both methods to create printable electronics and nanocomposites. However, both methods face common challenges, including controlling the surface morphology, reducing the turbostratic layering, and enhancing the dispersion stability. To address these challenges at the molecular level, we successfully combined molecular simulations, theoretical modeling, and experimental measurements. First, we probed the surface structure and electrostatic potential of monolayer graphene dispersed in a sodium cholate (SC) surfactant aqueous solution, which exhibits 2D sheets partially covered with a monolayer of negatively charged cholate ions. Similar to the case of carbon nanotube functionalization, one may regulate the binding affinity of charged reactants for graphene functionalization by manipulating the surface morphology. Subsequently, we quantified the interactions between two graphene-surfactant assemblies by calculating the potential of mean force (PMF) between two surfactant-covered graphene sheets, which confirmed the existence of a metastable bilayer graphene structure due to the steric hindrance of the confined surfactant molecules. The traditional Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory was found to be adequate to explain the long-range electrostatic repulsions between the ionic surfactant-covered graphene sheets but was unable to account for the dominant, short-range steric hindrance imparted by the confined surfactant molecules. Interestingly, one faces a dilemma when using surfactants to disperse and stabilize graphene in aqueous solution: on the one hand, surfactants can stabilize graphene aqueous dispersions, but on the other hand, they prevent the formation of new AB-stacked bilayer and trilayer graphene resulting from the reaggregation process. Finally, the lifetime and time-dependent distribution of various graphene layer types were predicted using a kinetic model of colloid aggregation, and each graphene layer type was further decomposed into subtypes, including the AB-stacked species and various turbostratic species. The kinetic model of colloid aggregation developed here can serve as a useful tool to evaluate the quality of graphene dispersions for subsequent substrate-transferring or functionalization processes.

Abstract:Printing techniques using nanomaterials have emerged as a versatile tool for fast prototyping and potentially large-scale manufacturing of functional devices. Surfactants play a significant role in many printing processes due to their ability to reduce interfacial tension between ink solvents and nanoparticles and thus improve ink colloidal stability. Here, a colloidal graphene quantum dot (GQD)-based nanosurfactant is reported to stabilize various types of 2D materials in aqueous inks. In particular, a graphene ink with superior colloidal stability is demonstrated by GQD nanosurfactants via the pi-pi stacking interaction, leading to the printing of multiple high-resolution patterns on various substrates using a single printing pass. It is found that nanosurfactants can significantly improve the mechanical stability of the printed graphene films compared with those of conventional molecular surfactant, as evidenced by 100 taping, 100 scratching, and 1000 bending cycles. Additionally, the printed composite film exhibits improved photoconductance using UV light with 400 nm wavelength, arising from excitation across the nanosurfactant bandgap. Taking advantage of the 3D conformal aerosol jet printing technique, a series of UV sensors of heterogeneous structures are directly printed on 2D flat and 3D spherical substrates, demonstrating the potential of manufacturing geometrically versatile devices based on nanosurfactant inks.
Graphene-philic surfactants for nanocomposites in latex technology

Abstract:Graphene is the newest member of the carbon family, and has revolutionized materials science especially in the field of polymer nanocomposites. However, agglomeration and uniform dispersion remains an Achilles' heel (even an elephant in the room), hampering the optimization of this material for practical applications. Chemical functionalization of graphene can overcome these hurdles but is often rather disruptive to the extended pi-conjugation, altering the desired physical and electronic properties. Employing surfactants as stabilizing agents in latex technology circumvents the need for chemical modification allowing for the formation of nanocomposites with retained graphene properties. This article reviews the recent progress in the use of surfactants and polymers to prepare graphene/polymer nanocomposites via latex technology. Of special interest here are surfactant structure-performance relationships, as well as background on the roles surfactant-graphene interactions for promoting stabilization.
Surfactant-Free Stabilization of Aqueous Graphene Dispersions Using Starch as a Dispersing Agent

Abstract:Attention to graphene dispersions in water with the aid of natural polymers is increasing with improved awareness of sustainability. However, the function of biopolymers that can act as dispersing agents in graphene dispersions is not well understood. In particular, the use of starch to disperse pristine graphene materials deserves further investigation. Here, we report the processing conditions of aqueous graphene dispersions using unmodified starch. We have found that the graphene content of the starch-graphene dispersion is dependent on the starch fraction. The starch-graphene sheets are few-layer graphene with a lateral size of 3.2 μm. Furthermore, topographical images of these starch-graphene sheets confirm the adsorption of starch nanoparticles with a height around 5 nm on the graphene surface. The adsorbed starch nanoparticles are ascribed to extend the storage time of the starch-graphene dispersion up to 1 month compared to spontaneous aggregation in a nonstabilized graphene dispersion without starch. Moreover, the ability to retain water by starch is reduced in the presence of graphene, likely due to environmental changes in the hydroxyl groups responsible for starch-water interactions. These findings demonstrate that starch can disperse graphene with a low oxygen content in water. The aqueous starch-graphene dispersion provides tremendous opportunities for environmental-friendly packaging applications.

Abstract:The capability of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), cationic-rich and anionic-rich mixtures for dispersion of graphene nanosheets in an aqueous medium was assessed through both experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation methods. The experimental results, especially measurements of ζ-potential showed that the dispersing power of pure SDS and the anionic-rich mixture is more than that of pure CTAB and cationic-rich mixture due to the smaller size of the SDS and more adsorption of it on the surface of graphene compared with CTAB. Nonetheless, stable dispersed graphene nanosheets were obtained at a lower total surfactant mixture concentration compared to when used alone, suggest the synergistic effect of catanionic mixtures. Regarding environmental impacts and costs, using surfactant mixtures for dispersing graphene nanosheets is promising. Moreover, MD simulations were used to examine surfactant mixture assemblies’ structure on graphene and explain the experimental results, which showed that the random adsorption model first changes to the monolayer model and then the hemispherical model with an increased surfactant concentration. The ζ-potential about surfactant mixture-graphene assemblies was estimated using the results of MD simulation and Poisson's theory, and the results conformed to the experimental results favorably. Eventually, interactions between two surfactant mixture-graphene assemblies were evaluated through calculating the potential of mean force (PMF), and it was found that increasing surfactant surface coverage would lead to an enhanced repulsive barrier of PMF. Understanding the mechanism of interactions will help the design and selection of appropriate surfactants, the optimization of the process and the improvement of graphene dispersion in aqueous solutions of surfactants.

Abstract:Amphiphilic carbon-based nanoparticles have recently attracted much attention in stabilizing Pickering emulsions owing to their low cytotoxicity, cost-effectiveness and biocompatibility. In this work, a facile and aqueous synthesis method was developed for the preparation of amphiphilic graphene quantum dots by modifying hydrophilic GQDs (GQDs-COOH) with hydrophobic hexylamine. Distinctive from pristine GQDs-COOH, amphiphilic GQDs show interesting surface-active properties and can stabilize water-in-cyclohexane Pickering emulsions. As efficient particle surfactants, amphiphilic GQDs could be applied in a mini-emulsion polymerization system to synthesize submicron-sized polystyrene particles. Particularly, the as-prepared PS particles were highly luminescent as produced by the highly fluorescent amphiphilic GQDs.

Abstract:The influence of surfactants on polymer nanocomposites has revealed noteworthy performance in the properties of mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical. Incorporating graphene filler with small wt. (%) into polymer, matrices demonstrate enhancement in properties and avoid flocculation of graphene particles. In this report, we have comprehensively examined various methodologies for synthesizing surfactant‐modified graphene and subsequently incorporating it into polymer matrices. Our review provides a consolidated overview of these approaches. Parameters required for the dispersion of nanofiller graphene are also emphasized. Surfactant‐modified graphene poured into polymer composites is preferred for applications in the domain of electrical, sensing technology, and high elevated temperature regions. Abstract:Surfactant molecules containing hydrophobic long alkyl chains and hydrophilic groups can organize into various micellar structures both in bulk solution and at interface. However, because of the dynamical nature of surfactant micelles, efforts directed at fixing their structures in bulk solution by polymerization have met with limited success. Herein, we report a unique and simple method of stabilizing surface micelles of a low molecular weight surfactant 11-acryloyloxyundecyltriethylammonium bromide (AUTEAB) through in situ intramicellar polymerization on the mica surface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations show that the cylindrical micellar structure formed by AUTEAB monomers at the mica/water interface is preserved after the in situ polymerization, and the stability of the polymerized surface micelles is greatly enhanced compared with that of the unpolymerized ones.

Abstract:The use of stabilizers in liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite can effectively promote graphite exfoliation in common solvents, and concurrently render functionalized graphene by adsorbing them on the exfoliated graphene surface. Thus, the exploration of novel stabilizers is especially important for graphene liquid-phase production and related applications. Herein, we report the successful application of a pyrene-functionalized hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE@Py) as the stabilizer for graphite exfoliation in chloroform. The polymer has a global hyperbranched polyethylene backbone and multiple covalently bonded pyrene moieties as branch ends. It can be synthesized via ethylene copolymerization using a Pd-diimine catalyst under mild conditions, 0.1 MPa/25 degrees C. Due to the cooperative effect of the CH-pi and pi-pi interactions between the HBPE@Py and graphene surface, some of the polymer is irreversibly adsorbed on the latter, thus effectively preventing their re-stacking and concurrently rendering pyrene-functionalized graphene. This allows us to obtain stable dispersions of few-layer graphene with relatively high concentrations (0.10-0.50 mg mL(-1)) and exfoliation efficiencies (1.6-13.0%). The resultant graphene is confirmed to be high-quality and shown to be highly stable when dispersed in chloroform, even the free polymer has been thoroughly removed. From the dispersion, a flexible, conductive graphene film and polymer-based graphene nanocomposites have been successfully prepared. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, linear polystyrene-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) and heteroarm star PS_22P2VP_22 ionizable block copolymers were used as dispersing agents for the liquid-phase exfoliation of pristine graphene. Various strategies such as direct exfoliation, film hydration and phase transfer have been employed and compared. The best strategy involved a two-step process, namely, pre-exfoliation of graphite in polymer/CHCl3 solutions followed by phase transfer to acidified water. High concentrations of stable aqueous suspensions of graphene flakes, highly enriched in monolayer structures, were then obtained by using the star-shaped copolymers as stabilizers. The as-prepared graphene/copolymer hybrids were used as a filler material in order to prepare functional polymer composites for mechanical reinforcement. Such copolymer-modified graphene sheets have proven to be efficient reinforcing agents of PVA, as a significant increase of storage modulus (145% higher than that of neat PVA) was achieved even at a low graphene weight fraction of 0.1 wt%.

Abstract:Rationally and efficiently controlling the morphology of nanomaterials plays a crucial role in significantly enhancing their functional properties and expending their applications. In this work, a strategy for controlled synthesis of diverse nanostructured materials with tunable morphologies was developed using a guanidinium-based surfactant with a polymerizable pyrrole unit as a multifunctional molecule that can serve not only as a structure-directing agent for mesostucture formation but also as a monomer and carbon source. The unique self-assembly behavior of the guanidinium head group under different conditions allows the synthesized surfactants to form different aggregates and thus to produce silica nanomaterials with multiple morphologies (such as sphere, disk, fiber, and cocoon) in conjunction with sol-gel chemistry. Besides the mesostructured silicates, by further exploring the polymerization and carbonization features of pyrrole units that were densely packed in the formed silica nanochannels, diverse nanostructured materials such as mesostructured conducting polymers, carbon materials, and metal-nanoparticle (NP)-decorated forms could also be easily obtained in one-pot fashion for various applications, such as energy storage and catalysis. As a demonstration, carbon nanotubes and Pd-NP-doped hollow carbon spheres were fabricated, which exhibited good specific capacitance (101.7 F g-1) at the scan rates of 5 mV s-1 and excellent catalytic performance (100% conversion for three cycles) in the Suzuki C-C coupling reaction, respectively. All of the results indicate that our strategy may open a new avenue for efficiently accessing diverse nanostructured materials with tunable morphologies for wide applications.

Abstract:Graphene sheets have been dispersed in water and organic solvents by noncovalent surface modification with the assistance of bifunctional molecule pyrene-adamantane (Py-Ad) carrying a pyrene moiety. Lipophilic graphene sheets have been obtained in the form of graphene-Py-Ad in a wide variety of organic solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N'-dimethylformamide, and tetrahydrofuran, in which the adamantane moieties served as the three-dimensional steric groups keeping the graphene sheets from stacking. Supramolecular complexes were employed as the dispersing agent for graphene formed through in situ reduction by hydrazine or hydroquinone. Water-dispersible graphene sheets have been obtained in the form of graphene-Py-Ad-bMCD (methylated beta-cyclodextrin, bMCD), in which the pyrene moiety attached to graphene by pi-pi stacking interaction and hydrophobic effect, and the adamantane group formed complex with bMCD, yielding a supramolecular system that made graphene sheets dissolved in water through the formed hydrophilic cyclodextrin shell. The resulting supramolecular complexes were characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:This work describes, a quick and easy single‐step biofunctionalization method for dispersing graphene in aqueous media using an enzymatic conjugation approach to covalently incorporate short aromatic/charged tripeptides giving rise to homogenous graphene functionalization. The resulting stable graphene dispersions hold significant promise for enhancing biocompatibility for diverse biological applications. Graphene, a 2D carbon material, possesses extraordinary mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, making it highly attractive for various biological applications such as biosensing, biotherapeutics, and tissue engineering. However, the tendency of graphene sheets to aggregate and restack hinders its dispersion in water, limiting these applications. Peptides, with their defined amino acid sequences and versatile functionalities, are compelling molecules with which to modify graphene—aromatic amino acids can strengthen interactions through π‐stacking and charged groups can be chosen to make the sheets dispersible and stable in water. Here, a facile and green method for covalently functionalizing and dispersing graphene using amphiphilic tripeptides, facilitated by a tyrosine phenol side chain, through an aqueous enzymatic oxidation process is demonstrated. The presence of a second aromatic side chain group enhances this interaction through non‐covalent support via π–π stacking with the graphene surface. Futhermore, the addition of charged moieties originating from either ionizable amino acids or terminal groups facilitates profound interactions with water, resulting in the dispersion of the newly functionalized graphene in aqueous solutions. This biofunctionalization method resulted in ≈56% peptide loading on the graphene surface, leading to graphene dispersions that remain stable for months in aqueous solutions outperforming currently used surfactants.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) in ethylene glycol (EG), a polar dispersion medium, by a liquid-phase exfoliation method involving sonication and centrifugation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy are used for qualitative and quantitative characterization of the graphene dispersions. TEM micrographs confirm the exfoliation and production of monolayer GNPs after sonication. Statistical analysis of TEM micrographs shows that increasing the sonication time increases the degree of exfoliation of GNPs. Raman spectroscopy studies also show that high-power probe sonication exfoliates multi-layer GNPs to few-layer GNPs. The proposed method is promising to provide monolayer and few-layer graphene dispersed in a polar medium, practical to multiple engineering applications including polymer nanocomposites.
