Abstract:In the past few years, graphene-based nanocomposites are a hot topic in the fields of materials and chemistry owing to their unique features. We describe a facile melt blending method for preparing polypropylene/graphene nanocomposites in this article. The first stage involved grafting graphene onto chlorinated PP using the Friedel–Crafts reaction. The second stage involved the use of the resulting PP grafted graphene (PPG) as fillers in a melt blend with commercial PP. After being grafted with an organic PP chain, graphene becomes lipophilic; consequently, the PPG can be dispersed well within the PP matrix while retaining excellent interface adhesion. As a result, the thermostability, mechanical performance, and electrical conductivity of PP were significantly improved through the addition of PPG fillers. Additionally, with 10 wt% of PPG fillers (equivalent to 5 wt% graphene sheets), the conductivity approaches 6.8 S m−1. As a result of this research, a new method for producing high-performance PP has been developed.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) composites reinforced with graphene nanosheets (GNSs) were prepared by in situ polymerization. Graphene nanosheets, which were derived from chemically reduced graphite oxide (GO) nanosheets, were characterized by solid-state C-13 MAS NMR, XRD and FTIR. A morphological study showed that, due to the formation of chemical bonds, the GNS was dispersed well in the PU matrix. With the incorporation of 2.0 wt% of GNSs, the tensile strength and storage modulus of the PU increased by 239% and 202%, respectively. The nanocomposites displayed high electrical conductivity, and good thermal stability of PU was also achieved. The facile and rapid technique presented here will provide an effective and promising method of preparing graphene-based polymer composites.

Abstract:Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)-graphene nanocomposites were synthesized via in situ oxidative polymerization of 3-hexylthiophene monomer in the presence of graphene. The main thrust was to investigate the structural and optoelectronic properties of P3HT-graphene nanocomposites with various graphene concentrations. NMR spectroscopy was used to determine the regioregularity of the polymer composites, whereas Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry were used to study their structural and thermal properties. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry was employed to evaluate the HOMO levels of the nanocomposites, while optical spectrophotometry (UV-Vis-NIR) was utilized to determine the optical bandgap of the composites. The information from the aforementioned techniques was used to estimate the HOMO-LUMO energy levels. The results revealed changes in the optical bandgap of P3HT with increasing graphene content. Furthermore, an extensive study aiming at the effect of graphene content on the optical constants of P3HT was conducted using ellipsometry. Photoluminescence analysis of the samples showed no quenching effect of photoluminescence emission with increasing graphene content. Our studies indicate that the inclusion of graphene impacts the optoelectronic properties of P3HT, which can further be used for advanced applications, such as organic solar cells, organic light emitting diodes, organic field-effect transistors, and polymer batteries.

Abstract:Graphene (G)-based nanocomposites have received much attention in various disciplines due to their high specific surface area, good compatibility, low mass density, elegant flexibility as well as the excellent synergistic effect of G with other nanomaterials. Numerous studies have been carried out to fabricate G-based polymer composites with novel and improved properties. However, the dispersion behavior of G in a polymer matrix and the interfacial bonding between G and polymers still restrict the better performances and broader applications of the fabricated G-polymer nanocomposites. In this review, we have summarized the most recent studies on the modification of G with polymers and the subsequent synthesis and applications of high quality G-polymer nanocomposites. The strategies for surface modification of G with polymers, including various covalent and non-covalent techniques, are introduced in detail. In addition, a series of effective processing routes for producing high quality G-polymer nanocomposites, such as melt compounding, solution blending, in situ polymerization, latex mixing, and electropolymerization, are introduced and discussed. Finally, the potential applications of the synthesized G-polymer nanocomposites in electrocatalysts, drug delivery, high performance materials, biosensors, and biomedical materials are presented.

Abstract:We reported an efficient method to prepare nylon-6 (PA6) graphene (NG) composites by in situ polymerization of caprolactam in the presence of graphene oxide (GO). During the polycondensation, GO was thermally reduced to graphene simultaneously. By adjusting the feed ratio of caprolactam to GO, various composites with 0.01-10 wt % content of graphene were obtained. The highly grafting nylon-6 arms on graphene sheets was confirmed by XPS, FTIR, TGA and AFM measurements, showing the grafting content up to 78 wt % and homogeneous 2D brush-like morphology from A FM observations. The efficient polymer-chain grafting makes the grapheme homogeneously dispersed in PA6 matrix and depresses the crystallization of PA6 chains. Furthermore, we prepared NG fibers by melt spinning process, and found that the tensile strength increased by 2.1 folds and Young's modulus increased by 2.4 folds with the graphene loading of 0.1 wt % only, revealing an excellent reinforcement to composites by graphene. The in situ condensation polymerization approach paves the way to prepare graphene-based nanocomposites of condensation polymers with high performances and novel functionalities.

Abstract:Homogeneously dispersed graphene reinforced geopolymer composites were easily and simply prepared through in-situ reduction of graphene oxide (GO) in alkaline geopolymeric solutions. The in-situ GO reduction degree, microstructure and mechanical properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/geopolymer composites were investigated systematically. The results revealed that the rGO C/O ratio increased dramatically after in situ reaction at 60 degrees C for 72 h in geopolymeric solutions. The reduction is mainly attributed to conversion of C=O to C-O bonds and then elimination of residual oxygen-function groups under the alkaline conditions. The as-obtained rGO was uniformly dispersed and exhibited good long-term stability in the geopolymeric solutions. The final amorphous geopolymer matrix structure was unaffected by the homogeneously dispersed rGO yet strong interfacial bonding was observed. As a result, the fracture toughness of the composite with 1 wt% rGO was improved by similar to 17% compared with the pristine geopolymer. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Abstract:Nanocomposites, multiphase solid materials with at least one nanoscaled component, have been attracting ever‐increasing attention because of their unique properties. Graphene is an ideal filler for high‐performance multifunctional nanocomposites in light of its superior mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical properties. However, the 2D nature of graphene usually gives rise to highly anisotropic features, which brings new opportunities to tailor nanocomposites by making full use of its excellent in‐plane properties. Here, recent progress on graphene/polymer nanocomposites is summarized with emphasis on strengthening/toughening, electrical conduction, thermal transportation, and photothermal energy conversion. The influence of the graphene configuration, including layer number, defects, and lateral size, on its intrinsic properties and the properties of graphene/polymer nanocomposites is systematically analyzed. Meanwhile, the role of the interfacial interaction between graphene and polymer in affecting the properties of nanocomposites is also explored. The correlation between the graphene distribution in the matrix and the properties of the nanocomposite is discussed in detail. The key challenges and possible solutions are also addressed. This review may provide a constructive guidance for preparing high‐performance graphene/polymer nanocomposite in the future.
Preparation of Graphene Sheets/polyimide Nanocomposite Films by In-Situ Polymerization

Abstract:Graphene sheets were carbon materials with high surface area, and excellent electrical properties. One of the most promising applications of those materials is in polymer nanocomposites. Their multifunctional properties may create new applications of polymer nanocomposites. In this paper, graphene sheets were prepared by oxidation-reduction method. The graphite was oxidized by potassium permanganate and sulphuric acid. The graphene oxide nanosheets, which were exfoliated from graphite oxide by ultrasound in water, were reduced by hydrazine hydrate, and the graphene nanosheets were obtained. Thereafter, the graphene sheets were dispersed in N,N-dimethylacetamide by simple sonication treatment. The graphene sheets/polyimide nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ polymerization using N,N'-dimethylformamide, graphene sheets and pyromellitic dianhydride. It was observed from transmission electron microscopy of graphene oxide sheets and graphene sheets that the very thin sheets were obtained by exfoliation of graphite. The result of FT-IR spectral analysis for graphene sheets shows the functional groups on the graphene sheets surface were almost the same as graphite, and that means the graphene sheets were complete reduced by hydrazine hydrate. A homogeneous dispersion of graphene sheets was achieved in polyimide as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:The rapid development of society has promoted increasing demand for various polymer materials. A large variety of efforts have been applied in order for graphene strengthened polymer composites to satisfy different requirements. Graphene/polymer composites synthesized by traditional strategies display some striking defects, like weak interfacial interaction and agglomeration of graphene, leading to poor improvement in performance. Furthermore, the creation of pre-prepared graphene while being necessary always involves troublesome processes. Among the various preparation strategies, an appealing approach relies on intercalation and polymerization in the interlayer of graphite and has attracted researchers' attention due to its reliable, fast and simple synthesis. In this review, we introduce an intercalation polymerization strategy to graphene/polymer composites by the intercalation of molecules/ions into graphite interlayers, as well as subsequent polymerization. The key point for regulating intercalation polymerization is tuning the structure of graphite and intercalants for better interaction. Potential applications of the resulting graphene/polymer composites, including electrical conductivity, electromagnetic absorption, mechanical properties and thermal conductivity, are also reviewed. Furthermore, the shortcomings, challenges and prospects of intercalation polymerization are discussed, which will be helpful to researchers working in related fields.

Abstract:The polymer matrix with introduced carbon-based nanofiber displays fascinating properties. They have inspired extensive research on the synthesis of polymer composites, which have been applied in catalysis, electronics, and energy storage. In this report, we reported a facile and efficient method to prepare poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO)/nanographene (PNG) composites fibers via in-situ polymerization, accompanied by the reduction from (nanographene oxide) NGO to (nanographene) NG. By tuning the ratio of feeding PBO monomer to NGO, various composites fibers with 0.1–1 wt % contents of NG were obtained. The efficient PBO chains grafting made NG uniformly disperse in the PBO matrix, and it also increased the uniformity of the packing orientation of PBO chains. Consequently, the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and thermal stability of the obtained PNG composites fibers had been improved significantly. In addition, the composites fibers with 0.5 wt % NG exhibited a 25% increment in tensile strength, and a 41% enhancement in tensile modulus compared with neat PBO fibers. It reveals an excellent reinforcement to PBO composites fibers with NG.

Abstract:Polymethyl methacrylate/graphene (PMMA/graphene) composites was prepared in situ polymerization with initiator,after graphene and methacrylic acid (MMA) were blended with ultrasonic. The morphologies of these composites were characterized by atomic force microscope,transmission electron microscope,scanning electronic microscopy,fourier transform infrared spectrometer and X ray diffraction. The electrical conductivity and tensile properties of the composites were characterized by materials testing machine and four point probe instrument. The results show that graphene are homogeneous dispersed throughout PMMA/graphene composites. Compared with PMMA,the modulus of elasticity and maximum tensile strain of PMMA/graphene composites have a great improvement. The electrical conductivity of the composites increases from 10-14 S/cm to 8.89×10-2 S/cm with incorporation of only 1%graphene into PMMA. PMMA is modified from original insulating material to conductive material.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) reinforced polyimide nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ polymerization of monomers in the presence of GO sheets dispersed in N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The functional groups (e.g., hydroxyl, epoxide, and carboxyl groups) associated with the GO make GO excellent dispersion in the organic solvent, which benefits the subsequent in situ polymerization. This process enabled uniform dispersion of GO sheets in the polymer matrix. The resultant GO-polyimide nanocomposite films were studied by tensile test, TGA and SEM. The results showed that the GO sheets incorporated in the polymer matrix exhibited a layer-aligned structure without destruction of the thermal stability of the polymer matrix, and a loading of GO (10 wt%) resulted in a significant enhancement in elastic modulus (86.4%).

Abstract:In recent years, polymer/graphene nanocomposites have attracted much attention because of their wide applications in many fields, such as chemistry, physics, materials and electronics. In this review, the preparation methods of polymer/graphene nanocomposites, including solution blending, melt blending and in situ polymerisation, were presented in order to study the relationship between these methods and their final properties. Each method has an influence on the final characteristics of the nanocomposites. Their respective advantages and disadvantages were discussed. Additionally, the potential application research of graphene-reinforced polymer nanocomposites, including supercapacitors, sensors and solar cells was detailed comprehensively. The current review demonstrated that the nanocomposites exhibit superior performances and will be applied as new materials or novel devices. The research direction of polymer/graphene nanocomposites in the future was also predicted.

Abstract:Since being discovered, graphene shows promise as reinforcements in high-performance nano-composites. In the present study, we describe a novel strategy to design and prepare poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO)/graphene composite. Graphene oxide (GO) was first modified by 4, 6-diaminoresorcinol (DAR) to improve the reactivity, solubility, and dispersivity of GO in polymer matrix. Without separation and purification, GO-DAR was further incorporated with PBO through in situ polymerization, and PBO/GO composite films were obtained by thermoforming process. The structure and morphology of GO-DAR and PBO/GO films were characterized and the mechanical and thermal properties were investigated. The incorporation of GO improved the thermal stability of PBO. Mechanical property measurements revealed that the PBO/GO films exhibited a tensile strength (148 MPa) and Young's modulus (6.2 GPa) at a GO loading of 1.5 wt%, corresponding to 39.6% and 72.2% increase compared to the PBO film, respectively. The one-pot in situ procedure wraps GO with PBO chains, improves the dispersion and alignment of GO in PBO matrix, enhances PBO chain packing order, which are considered to be the main reasons for the performance improvement of PBO. Abstract:Graphene is an excellent 2D material that has extraordinary properties such as high surface area, electron mobility, conductivity, and high light transmission. Polymer composites are used in many applications in place of polymers. In recent years, the development of stable graphene dispersions with high graphene concentrations has attracted great attention due to their applications in energy, bio-fields, and so forth. Thus, this review essentially discusses the preparation of stable graphene–polymer composites/dispersions. Discussion on existing methods of preparing graphene is included with their merits and demerits. Among existing methods, mechanical exfoliation is widely used for the preparation of stable graphene dispersion, the theoretical background of this method is discussed briefly. Solvents, surfactants, and polymers that are used for dispersing graphene and the factors to be considered while preparing stable graphene dispersions are discussed in detail. Further, the direct applications of stable graphene dispersions are discussed briefly. Finally, a summary and prospects for the development of stable graphene dispersions are proposed.

Abstract:Graphene with unique nanostructures possess fascinating properties which has inspired extensive research on the incorporation of graphene into polymer matrix to improve the properties. So, in this report, we take a facile and effective approach, one-pot in situ polymerization, to prepare graphene oxide (GO)/Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) composite fibers. The GO sheets were first modified by 4, 6-diaminoresorcinol (DAR) a PBO monomer, another monomer terephthalic acid (TPA) were then added for further polymerization. The NI-12-functionalized GO (DAR-GO) sheets are an excellent initial platform for molecular chains grafting. It promote the dispersion of GO sheets in PBO matrix and form strong interaction with the PBO molecular chains to enhance load transfer. The tensile module and tensile strength of the PBO-DAR-GO composite fibers containing 1.0 wt% DAR-GO are increased by 35.9% and 19.6%, respectively compared with neat PBO fibers. In addition, the thermal stability of composite fibers also enhanced with DAR-GO content increasing. This approach supplies a novel strategy for preparing ultra-strong properties PBO composite fibers. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Integration of graphene with polymers to construct three-dimensional porous graphene/polymer composites (3DGPCs) has attracted considerable attention in the past few years for both fundamental studies and diverse technological applications. With the broad diversity in molecular structures of graphene and polymers via rich chemical routes, a number of 3DGPCs have been developed with unique structural, electrical, and mechanical properties, chemical tenability, and attractive functions, which greatly expands the research horizon of graphene-based composites. In particular, the properties and functions of the 3DGPCs can be readily tuned by precisely controlling the hierarchical porosity in the 3D graphene architecture as well as the intricate synergistic interactions between graphene and polymers. In this paper, we review the recent progress in 3DGPCs, including their synthetic strategies and potential applications in environmental protection, energy storage, sensors, and conducting composites. Lastly, we will conclude with a brief perspective on the challenges and future opportunities.

Abstract:Poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyacrylamide (PAM)/graphite oxide (GO) nanocomposites were prepared by in-situ polymerization method and characterized by X-ray Diffraction, High-Resolution Electron Microscope (HREM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (FTIR). The results show that chemical reaction can take place between polymer and graphite oxide, and the polymerization process changes the orientation of the intercalated molecules.
