Abstract:Bioinspired artificial functional nanochannels for intelligent molecular and ionic transport control at the nanoscale have wide potential applications in nanofluidics, energy conversion, and biosensors. Although various smart passive ion transport properties of ion channels have been artificially realized, it is still hugely challenging to achieve high level intelligent ion transport features in biological ion pumps. Here we show a unique bioinspired single ion pump based on a cooperative pH response double-gate nanochannel, whose gates could be opened and closed alternately/simultaneously under symmetric/asymmetric pH environments. With the stimulation of the double-gate nanochannel by continuous switching of the symmetric/asymmetric pH stimuli, the bioinspired system systematically realized three key ionic transport features of biological ion pumps, including an alternating gates ion pumping process under symmetric pH stimuli, transformation of the ion pump into an ion channel under asymmetric pH stimuli, and a fail-safe ion pumping feature under both symmetric and asymmetric pH stimuli. The ion pumping processes could well be reproduced under a concentration gradient. With the advantages of the extraordinary ionic transport functions of biological ion pumps, the bioinspired ion pump should find widespread applicability in active transportation-controlling smart nanofluidic devices, efficient energy conversions, and seawater desalinization, and open the way to design and develop novel bioinspired intelligent artificial nanochannel materials.
Efficient photo-driven ion pump through slightly reduced vertical graphene oxide membranes

Abstract:Solar energy can be harvested using biological light-driven ion pumps for the sustainability of life. It remains a significant challenge to develop high-performance artificial light-driven ion pumps for solar energy harvesting in all solid-state materials. Here, we exploit the benefits of short channel lengths and efficient light absorption to demonstrate efficient photo-driven ion transport in slightly reduced vertical graphene oxide membranes (GOMs). Remarkably, this photo-driven ion pump exhibits excellent ability, countering a 10-fold electrolyte concentration gradient. We propose a plausible mechanism where light illumination enhances the electric potential of ion channels on GOMs triggered by the separation of photoexcited charge carriers between the sp2 and sp3 carbon clusters. This results in the establishment of an electric potential difference across the effective ion channels composed of sp3 carbon clusters, thus driving the directional transport of cations from the illuminated side to the non-illuminated side. The promising results of this study provide new possibilities for the application of vertical 2D nanofluidic membranes in areas such as artificial photosynthesis, light harvesting, and water treatment.

Abstract:Halorhodopsin, a light-driven chloride pump, utilizes photonic energy to drive chloride ions across biological membranes, regulating the ion balance and conveying biological information. In the light-driven chloride pump process, the chloride-binding chromophore (protonated Schiff base) is crucial, able to form the active center by absorbing light and triggering the transport cycle. Inspired by halorhodopsin, we demonstrate an artificial light-driven chloride pump using a helical porphyrin channel array with excellent photoactivity and specific chloride selectivity. The helical porphyrin channels are formed by a porphyrin-core star block copolymer, and the defects along the channels can be effectively repaired by doping a small number of porphyrins. The well-repaired porphyrin channel exhibits the light-driven Cl- migration against a 3-fold concentration gradient, showing the ion pumping behavior. The bio-inspired artificial light-driven chloride pump provides a prospect for designing bioinspired responsive ion channel systems and high-performance optogenetics.

Abstract:Abstract Light-driven ion (proton) transport is a crucial process both for photosynthesis of green plants and solar energy harvesting of some archaea. Here, we describe use of a TiO2/C3N4 semiconductor heterojunction nanotube membrane to realize similar light-driven directional ion transport performance to that of biological systems. This heterojunction system can be fabricated by two simple deposition steps. Under unilateral illumination, the TiO2/C3N4 heterojunction nanotube membrane can generate a photocurrent of about 9 μA/cm2, corresponding to a pumping stream of ∼5500 ions per second per nanotube. By changing the position of TiO2 and C3N4, a reverse equivalent ionic current can also be realized. Directional transport of photogenerated electrons and holes results in a transmembrane potential, which is the basis of the light-driven ion transport phenomenon. As a proof of concept, we also show that this system can be used for enhanced osmotic energy generation. The artificial light-driven ion transport system proposed here offers a further step forward on the roadmap for development of ionic photoelectric conversion and integration into other applications, for example water desalination.

Abstract:Inspired by natural photosynthesis, light has become an emerging ionic behavior regulator and ion-pumping source. Nanoprocessing technology has allowed the bridge between the light-regulated nanofluids and the optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, which inspires applications like energy harvesting and enhances fundamental understandings in nanofluidics. However, unlike light-induced ion pumping based on densely layered membranes with multiple nanochannels, experimental implementation on atomically thin materials featuring only a single nanochannel remains challenging. Here, we report light-induced ion pumping based on a single artificial heterojunction nanopore. Under light illumination, the induced current through a single nanopore reaches tens of picoamperes. The hole-electron separation originating from the optoelectrical property of a van der Waals PN junction is proposed to capture the light-driven ion transport. Further, different methods are adopted to modify the ion behavior and response time, presenting potential applications in fluidic photoenergy harvesting, photoelectric ion transport control, and bionic artificial neurons.

Abstract:Biological photo-responsive ion channels play important roles in the important metabolic processes of living beings. To mimic the unique functions of biological prototypes, the transition metal dichalcogenides, owing to their excellent mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, are already used for artificial intelligent channel constructions. However, there remain challenges to building artificial bio-semiconductor nanochannels with finely tuned band gaps for accurately simulating or regulating ion transport. Here, two well-designed peptides are employed for the WS2 nanosheets functionalization with the sequences of PFPFPFPFC and DFDFDFDFC (PFC and DFC; P: proline, D: aspartate, and F: phenylalanine) through cysteine (Cys, C) linker, and an asymmetric peptide-WS2 membrane (AP-WS2M) could be obtained via self-assembly of peptide-WS2 nanosheets. The AP-WS2M could realize the photo-driven anti-gradient ion transport and vis-light enhanced osmotic energy conversion by well-designed working patterns. The photo-driven ion transport mechanism stems from a built-in photovoltaic motive force with the help of formed type II band alignment between the PFC-WS2 and DFC-WS2. As a result, the ions would be driven across the channels of the membrane for different applications. The proposed system provides an effective solution for building photo-driven biomimetic 2D bio-semiconductor ion channels, which could be extensively applied in the fields of drug delivery, desalination, and energy conversion.

Abstract:A bioinspired Janus dual‐field heterostructure is constructed through assembly of PMMT nanosheets decorated with photoelectric molecules and MXene nanosheets with inherent photothermal conversion property. Taking advantage of established photovoltaic gradient and axial temperature gradient via light‐induced charge separation and photothermal effect, light‐driven active transport with equilibrium concentration is achieved to harvest ionic power, conquering the limitation of salinity gradient. Natural organisms have developed various biological ion channels/transporters to maintain normal life activities to adapt to changing environments. Significantly, ion transporters with active ion transport property show much more controllability on these activities due to a variety of external stimuli, giving guidance to construct artificial counterparts for overcoming the issues in simple nanofluidic systems restricted by self‐diffusive ion transport. Herein, a 2D nanofluidic system based on a Janus membrane (i.e., JM) is constructed, which can achieve light‐driven active ion transport and do favor for ionic power harvesting in electrolyte systems with equal concentrations. The JM is obtained through sequentially assembled montmorillonite (MMT) decorated with photoelectric molecules (i.e., PMMT) and MXene nanosheets. Due to the formed intramembrane electric field and temperature gradient caused by the efficient charge separation and localized thermal excitation under light illumination, a photovoltaic‐driven force and thermo‐osmotic are generated for preferential ion transport. In addition, the unidirectional active transport is employed to harvest ionic power, showing an output power density of 2.0 mW m−2 and a high‐performance energy conversion efficiency of 8.3 × 10−4%. The effects of the light intensity, electrolyte concentration and species on energy conversion performance are investigated, showing the university for ionic power harvesting.

Abstract:The simulation of the ion pumping against a proton gradient energized by light in the photosynthesis is of significant importance for the energy conversion in a non-biological environment. Herein, we report a light-powered ion pumping in a polystyrene sulfonate anions (PSS) doped polypyrrole (PPy) conducting polymer membrane (PSS-PPy) with a symmetric geometry. This PSS-PPy conducting polymer membrane exhibits a cationic selectivity and a light-responsive surface-charge-governed ion transport attributed to the negatively charged PSS groups. An asymmetric visible irradiation on one side of PSS-PPy membrane induces a built-in electric field across the membrane due to the intrinsic photoelectronic property of PPy, which drives the cationic transport against the concentration gradient, demonstrating an ion pumping effect. This work is a prototype that uses a geometry-symmetric conducting polymer membrane as a light-powered artificial ion pump for active ion transport, which exhibits potential applications in nanofluidic energy conversion.

Abstract:Bioinspired two-dimensional (2D) nanofluidic systems for photo-induced ion transport have attracted great attention, as they open a new pathway to enabling light-to-ionic energy conversion. However, there is still a great challenge in achieving a satisfactory performance. It is noticed that organic solar cells (OSCs, light-harvesting device based on photovoltaic effect) commonly require hole/electron transport layer materials (TLMs), PEDOT:PSS (PE) and PDINN (PD), respectively, to promote the energy conversion. Inspired by such a strategy, an artificial proton pump by coupling a nanofluidic system with TLMs is proposed, in which the PE- and PD-functionalized tungsten disulfide (WS2) multilayers construct a heterogeneous membrane, realizing an excellent output power of ≈1.13 nW. The proton transport is fine-regulated due to the TLMs-engineered band structure of WS2. Clearly, the incorporating TLMs of OSCs into 2D nanofluidic systems offers a feasible and promising approach for band edge engineering and promoting the light-to-ionic energy conversion.

Abstract:Ion transport in bionanopores is closely related to biological processes and can be regulated by various external stimulations. Multivalent ion as one of the stimulators shows a great ability in tuning the ion transport properties, while the mechanism is yet unclear. Here, inspired by this multivalent ion involved process, we propose a multivalent ion responsive symmetric hourglass polycarbonate nanopore. Addition of multivalent ion triggers formation of an abrupt bipolar junction inside the nanopore, and an ultrahigh ion current rectification ratio higher than 650 can be achieved. The ion transport property can be reversibly and significantly regulated via the reversible adsorption/desorption of multivalent ions on nanopore surface. This study provides the fundamentals to an understanding of the biological process and proposes an effective strategy to build smart nanofluidic devices.

Abstract:2D-material-based membranes with densely packed sub-nanometer-height fluidic channels show exceptional transport properties, and have attracted broad research interest for energy-, environment-, and healthcare-related applications. Recently, light-controlled active transport of ionic species in abiotic materials have received renewed attention. However, its dependence on inhomogeneous or site-specific illumination is a challenge for scalable application. Here, directional proton transport through printed asymmetric graphene oxide superstructures (GOSs) is demonstrated under full-area illumination. The GOSs are composed of partially stacked graphene oxide multilayers formed by a two-step direct ink writing process. The direction of the photoinduced proton current is determined by the position of top graphene oxide multilayers, which functions as a photogate to modulate the horizontal ion transport through the beneath lamellar nanochannels. This transport phenomenon unveils a new driving mechanism that, in asymmetric nanofluidic structures, the decay of local light intensity in depth direction breaks the balance of electric potential distribution in horizontal direction, and thus generates a photoelectric driving force for ion transport. Following this mechanism, the GOSs are developed into photonic ion transistors with three different gating modes. The asymmetrically printed photonic-ionic devices provide fundamental elements for light-harvesting nanofluidic circuits, and may find applications for artificial photosynthesis and artificial electric organs.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the transport of water across nanochannels is of great importance for designing novel molecular devices, machines and sensors and has wide applications1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, including the desalination of seawater5. Nanopumps driven by electric or magnetic fields can transport ions10,11 and magnetic quanta12, but water is charge-neutral and has no magnetic moment. On the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we propose a design for a molecular water pump. The design uses a combination of charges positioned adjacent to a nanopore and is inspired by the structure of channels in the cellular membrane that conduct water in and out of the cell (aquaporins). The remarkable pumping ability is attributed to the charge dipole-induced ordering of water confined in the nanochannels13,14, where water can be easily driven by external fields in a concerted fashion. These findings may provide possibilities for developing water transport devices that function without osmotic pressure or a hydrostatic pressure gradient.

Abstract:Biology systems harvest solar energy to regulate ions and molecules precisely across cell membrane that is essential to maintain their life sustainability. Recently, artificial light-driven directional ion transport through graphene oxide membranes has been established, where the membrane converts light power into a transmembrane motive force. Herein, we report a silver nanoparticles decorated graphene oxide membranes for enhanced photo-driven ionic transport. Asymmetric light stimulated charge carrier dynamics, such as advanced light absorption efficiency, extended lifetime and efficient separation of photo-excited charge carriers, are account for the ion-driven force enhancement. Based on metal nanoparticles decoration, the concept of the guest-interactions of plasmon-enhanced photo-driven ion transport in two-dimentional layered membranes will stimulate broad researches in sensing, energy storage and conversion and water treatment.

Abstract:Biological photoresponsive ion transport systems consistently attract researchers' attention owing to their remarkable functions of harvesting energy from nature and participating in visual perception systems. Designing and constructing artificial light-driven ion transport devices to mimic biological counterparts remains a challenge owing to fabrication limitations in nanoconfined spaces. Herein, a typical conjugated polyelectrolyte (PFN-Br) was assembled onto a laminated MoS2M using simple solution-processing vacuum filtration, resulting in a heterogeneous three- and two-dimensional nanoporous membrane. The designed band alignment between PFN-Br and MoS2 enables effective directional ion transport under irradiation in an equilibrium solution, even against a 30-fold concentration gradient. The staggered energy structure of PFN-Br and MoS2 enhances charge separation and establishes a photogenerated potential as the driving force for ion transport. Additionally, the activation energy barrier for ion transport across the heterogeneous membrane decreased by 60% after light irradiation, considerably improving ion transport flux. The easy fabrication and high performance of the membrane in light-powered ion transport provide promising approaches for designing nanofluidic devices with possible applications in energy conversion, light-enhanced biosensing, and photoresponsive ionic devices.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a new design to enhance ion transport in pressure-driven nanofluidic systems for energy harvesting. The proposed system uses two counter-charged nanochannels, i.e., one of the channels is negatively charged while the other one is positively charged. Under a pressure gradient, cations and anions move through negatively and positively charged channels, respectively, in different directions and contribute to the streaming current. Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to study the effects of surface charge density, channel height, and pressure gradient on the streaming current. Compared with the traditional system, where the nanochannel is negatively charged, the streaming current in the proposed system can be enhanced by a factor up to 6.6. In addition to the involvement of both cations and anions, the enhanced current in the proposed system is caused by the strengthened ionic fluxes due to relatively low-energy barriers for ions entering the channels.
