Abstract:Nature's various hierarchical structures exhibit exceptional performance in enhancing mass transport. However, how to bionic nano-hierarchical structures to enhance ion dynamics and achieve charge regulation is a significant challenge. Herein, a nano-hierarchical porous hybrid membrane inspired by nature was designed by integrating 1D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the 2D MXene substrate utilizing MOF nanoparticles with tailorable positive and negative surface charges. The synergistic effects of the bioinspired nanohierarchical porous structure and surface charge interactions significantly enhance the performance and stability of the nanoconfined membrane, as corroborated by experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations. As a result, the optimized nanohierarchical porous membrane exhibits high a cation selectivity of 0.95, an outstanding power density of 35.04 W m-2, and excellent stability over one month. Synergizing enhanced mass transport and ion dynamics in nano-hierarchically structured materials with tailored charge improves osmotic power generation efficiency and benefits logic circuits with controlled charge transport.

Abstract:Biological ion pumps selectively transport target ions against the concentration gradient, a process that is crucial to maintaining the out-of-equilibrium states of cells. Building an ion pump with ion selectivity has been challenging. Here we show that a Ti3C2Tx MXene film suspended in air with a trapezoidal shape spontaneously pumps K+ ions from the base end to the tip end and exhibits a K+/Na+ selectivity of 4. Such a phenomenon is attributed to a range of properties of MXene. Thanks to the high stability of MXene in water and the dynamic equilibrium between evaporation and swelling, the film keeps a narrow interlayer spacing of similar to 0.3 nm when its two ends are connected to reservoirs. Because of the polar electrical structure and hydrophilicity of the MXene nanosheet, K+ ions experience a low energy barrier of similar to 4.6 k(B)T when entering these narrow interlayer spacings. Through quantitative simulations and consistent experimental results, we further show that the narrow spacings exhibit a higher energy barrier to Na+, resulting in K+/Na+ selectivity. Finally, we show that the spontaneous ion transport is driven by the asymmetric evaporation of the interlayer water across the film, a mechanism that is similar to pressure driven streaming current. This work shows how ion transport properties can be facilely manipulated by tuning the macroscopic shape of nanofluidic materials, which may attract interest in the interface of kirigami technologies and nanofluidics and show potential in energy and separation applications.

Aqueous Stable Ti 3 C 2 MXene Membrane with Fast and Photoswitchable Nanofluidic Transport.

Abstract:High, stable, and modulatable ionic conductivity is important for the wide nanofluidic applications of layered two-dimensional (2D) membranes. In this study, we demonstrate the orders of magnitude higher proton and ionic conductivity of MXene membrane than that of bulk solution at low concentrations. Importantly, the membrane is highly stable in aqueous solution without any modification, due to the strong interlayer van der Waals attractive interaction, and weak electrostatic repulsive interaction. Furthermore, by exploiting the intrinsic photothermal property of MXene, we demonstrate that the ionic conductivity can be reversely, rapidly, and completely switched on or off with laser light. This study should prove MXene membrane as an excellent platform to study and utilize nanofluidic ion transport. It should also inspire future studies to manipulate the mass transport through 2D membranes using their inherent unique physico-chemical properties.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the transport of water across nanochannels is of great importance for designing novel molecular devices, machines and sensors and has wide applications1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, including the desalination of seawater5. Nanopumps driven by electric or magnetic fields can transport ions10,11 and magnetic quanta12, but water is charge-neutral and has no magnetic moment. On the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we propose a design for a molecular water pump. The design uses a combination of charges positioned adjacent to a nanopore and is inspired by the structure of channels in the cellular membrane that conduct water in and out of the cell (aquaporins). The remarkable pumping ability is attributed to the charge dipole-induced ordering of water confined in the nanochannels13,14, where water can be easily driven by external fields in a concerted fashion. These findings may provide possibilities for developing water transport devices that function without osmotic pressure or a hydrostatic pressure gradient.

Abstract:Exceptional ion release and storage ability of biological ion channels are regarded as a prerequisite for various life activities. Constructing biomimetic nanochannels to modulate selective ion transport has received enormous attention. Herein, a study on ion transport behavior in a vertically-oriented three-sectional Ti3C2Tx membrane with asymmetric charge distribution was presented. The surface charge polarity of Ti3C2Tx nanosheet was changed from negativity to positivity by successfully grafting the silane molecules onto the surface. The heterogenous Ti3C2Tx nanochannel membrane consisting of three different charged sections was prepared to build up the nanofluidic device. The diode-like ion transport property was observed for the heterogenous membrane, and the maximum ion current rectification ratio reached approximately 32. The numerical simulation based on the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations indicated that the directional ion diffusion was attributed to the accumulation and depletion of ions in the nanochannels under different potential biases. Moreover, the application potential of desalination and ion storage of the heterogenous membrane was assessed. Our work paves the way for the design of heterogenous nanochannels for controllable ion transport and introduces a new perspective for ion sieving, energy conversion, and sensing applications.

Abstract:Bioinspired asymmetric nanofluidic ion channels with ionic diode behavior that can boost the osmotic energy (so-called blue energy) conversion are highly desirable, especially if they can be easily constructed and modified. Two-dimensional (2D) metal carbides and nitrides, known as MXenes, combine hydrophilic surfaces and tunable surface charge properties, providing a shortcut to prepare asymmetric nanofluidic ion channels. Here, we report a mechanically robust, flexible, and scale-up-friendly asymmetric Ti3C2Tx MXene-based ionic diode membrane with a highly rectified current and demonstrate its potential use in reverse electrodialysis osmotic energy conversion. Under the salinity gradient of synthetic seawater and river water, our ionic diode membrane-based generator's power density is 8.6 W m(-2) and up to 17.8 W m(-2) at a 500-fold salinity gradient, outperforming the state-of-the-art membranes. The design of MXene-based ionic diode-type membrane provides a facile and general strategy in developing large-scale 2D nanofluidics and selective ion transport.

Abstract:Bioinspired artificial functional nanochannels for intelligent molecular and ionic transport control at the nanoscale have wide potential applications in nanofluidics, energy conversion, and biosensors. Although various smart passive ion transport properties of ion channels have been artificially realized, it is still hugely challenging to achieve high level intelligent ion transport features in biological ion pumps. Here we show a unique bioinspired single ion pump based on a cooperative pH response double-gate nanochannel, whose gates could be opened and closed alternately/simultaneously under symmetric/asymmetric pH environments. With the stimulation of the double-gate nanochannel by continuous switching of the symmetric/asymmetric pH stimuli, the bioinspired system systematically realized three key ionic transport features of biological ion pumps, including an alternating gates ion pumping process under symmetric pH stimuli, transformation of the ion pump into an ion channel under asymmetric pH stimuli, and a fail-safe ion pumping feature under both symmetric and asymmetric pH stimuli. The ion pumping processes could well be reproduced under a concentration gradient. With the advantages of the extraordinary ionic transport functions of biological ion pumps, the bioinspired ion pump should find widespread applicability in active transportation-controlling smart nanofluidic devices, efficient energy conversions, and seawater desalinization, and open the way to design and develop novel bioinspired intelligent artificial nanochannel materials.

Abstract:Ion transport in bionanopores is closely related to biological processes and can be regulated by various external stimulations. Multivalent ion as one of the stimulators shows a great ability in tuning the ion transport properties, while the mechanism is yet unclear. Here, inspired by this multivalent ion involved process, we propose a multivalent ion responsive symmetric hourglass polycarbonate nanopore. Addition of multivalent ion triggers formation of an abrupt bipolar junction inside the nanopore, and an ultrahigh ion current rectification ratio higher than 650 can be achieved. The ion transport property can be reversibly and significantly regulated via the reversible adsorption/desorption of multivalent ions on nanopore surface. This study provides the fundamentals to an understanding of the biological process and proposes an effective strategy to build smart nanofluidic devices.

Abstract:AbstractBio‐inspirierte asymmetrische nanofluidische Ionenkanäle mit ionischem Diodenverhalten sind Forschungsziel, weil sie die effektive Umwandlung osmotischer Energie (sogenannte “blaue Energie”) in Elektrizität erlauben, insbesondere, wenn sie die Möglichkeit einer weiteren Oberflächenmodifizierung bieten. Zweidimensionale (2D) Metallcarbide und ‐nitride, bekannt als MXene, kombinieren hydrophile Oberflächen mit einstellbaren Oberflächenladungseigenschaften und bieten einen kurzschrittigen Weg zur Herstellung asymmetrischer nanofluidischer Ionenkanäle. Hier berichten wir über eine mechanisch robuste, flexible und scale up‐freundliche asymmetrische Ionen‐Diodenmembran auf Ti3C2Tx‐MXene‐Basis mit einem hochgradig gleichgerichteten Ionenstrom und demonstrieren ihre potenzielle Verwendung in der Wandlung osmotischer in elektrische Energie durch Umkehrelektrodialyse. Unter dem Salzkonzentrationsgradienten von synthetischem Meerwasser und Flusswasser beträgt die Leistungsdichte unseres Ionendioden‐Membran‐basierten Generators 8.6 W m−2 und bis zu 17.8 W m−2 bei einem 500‐fachen Salzgradienten und übertrifft damit den Stand der Technik. Immiscible Liquid-Mediated Ultrafast Ion Transport through Nanoconfined Channels

Abstract:The selectivity filter of biological ion channels could well split ion's hydration shell at the entryway of channels with subtle opening sizes, leading to the 'naked' ion's rapid transport across the channels. Numerous artificial nanochannels have been developed for mimicking this. However, the precise fabrication of nanochannels/nanopores with targeted diameters has been always a challenge. Herein, we employ the immiscible liquid-infused channels to regulate the ion's hydration shell and mimic the ion transport processes. Experimental and theoretical results show the partial removal of water molecules around ions at the entrance of the nanochannels and low-resistance migration of ions in the immiscible liquid phase. Compared with the pristine membrane, the cross-membrane conductance and osmotic energy power density of the proposed membrane have increased by ~4-fold and ~77.3%, respectively. Moreover, this approach avoids the far-reached technique and could be easily adapted to various membrane materials. Therefore, this strategy holds great potential in systems requiring ion transport across membranes, including ion separation, battery, and desalination, etc.

Asymmetric Ion Transport through Ion-Channel-Mimetic Solid-State Nanopores

Abstract:Both scientists and engineers are interested in the design and fabrication of synthetic nanofluidic architectures that mimic the gating functions of biological ion channels. The effort to build such structures requires interdisciplinary efforts at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology. Biological ion channels and synthetic nanofluidic devices have some structural and chemical similarities, and therefore, they share some common features in regulating the traverse ionic flow. In the past decade, researchers have identified two asymmetric ion transport phenomena in synthetic nanofluidic structures, the rectified ionic current and the net diffusion current. The rectified ionic current is a diode-like current-voltage response that occurs when switching the voltage bias. This phenomenon indicates a preferential direction of transport in the nanofluidic system. The net diffusion current occurs as a direct product of charge selectivity and is generated from the asymmetric diffusion through charged nanofluidic channels. These new ion transport phenomena and the elaborate structures that occur in biology have inspired us to build functional nanofluidic devices for both fundamental research and practical applications. In this Account, we review our recent progress in the design and fabrication of biomimetic solid-state nanofluidic devices with asymmetric ion transport behavior. We demonstrate the origin of the rectified ionic current and the net diffusion current. We also identify several influential factors and discuss how to build these asymmetric features into nanofluidic systems by controlling (1) nanopore geometry, (2) surface charge distribution, (3) chemical composition, (4) channel wall wettability, (5) environmental pH, (6) electrolyte concentration gradient, and (7) ion mobility. In the case of the first four features, we build these asymmetric features directly into the nanofluidic structures. With the final three, we construct different environmental conditions in the electrolyte solutions on either side of the nanochannel. The novel and well-controlled nanofluidic phenomena have become the foundation for many promising applications, and we have highlighted several representative examples. Inspired by the electrogenic cell of the electric eel, we have demonstrated a proof-of-concept nanofluidic reverse electrodialysis system (NREDS) that converts salinity gradient energy into electricity by means of net diffusion current. We have also constructed chirality analysis systems into nanofluidic architectures and monitored these sensing events as the change in the degree of ionic current rectification. Moreover, we have developed a biohybrid nanosystem, in which we reconstituted the F0F1-ATPase on a liposome-coated, solid-state nanoporous membrane. By applying a transmembrane proton concentration gradient, the biohybrid nanodevice can synthesize ATP in vitro. These findings have improved our understanding of the asymmetric ion transport phenomena in synthetic nanofluidic systems and offer innovative insights into the design of functional nanofluidic devices.

Bioinspired inner microstructured tube controlled capillary rise

Abstract:Effective, long-range, and self-propelled water elevation and transport are important in industrial, medical, and agricultural applications. Although research has grown rapidly, existing methods for water film elevation are still limited. Scaling up for practical applications in an energy-efficient way remains a challenge. Inspired by the continuous water cross-boundary transport on the peristome surface of Nepenthes alata, here we demonstrate the use of peristome-mimetic structures for controlled water elevation by bending biomimetic plates into tubes. The fabricated structures have unique advantages beyond those of natural pitcher plants: bulk water diode transport behavior is achieved with a high-speed passing state (several centimeters per second on a milliliter scale) and a gating state as a result of the synergistic effect between peristome-mimetic structures and tube curvature without external energy input. Significantly, on further bending the peristome-mimetic tube into a "candy cane"-shaped pipe, a self-siphon with liquid diode behavior is achieved. Such a transport mechanism should inspire the design of next generation water transport devices.
Bioinspired Capillary Transistors

Abstract:Inspired by the unidirectional liquid spreading on Nepenthes peristome, Araucaria leaf, butterfly wings, etc., various microfluidic devices have been developed for water collection, irrigation, physical/chemical reaction, and oil-water separation. Despite extensive progress, most natural and artificial structures fail to enhance the Laplace pressure difference or capillary force, thus suffering from a low unidirectional capillary height (<30 mm). In this work, asymmetric re-entrant structures with long overhangs and connected forward/lateral microchannels are fabricated by 3D printing, resulting in a significantly increased unidirectional capillary height of 102.3 mm for water, which approximately corresponds to the theoretical limit. The overhangs can partially overlap the forward microchannels of the front structures without direct contact, thus enhancing the Laplace pressure difference and capillary force simultaneously. Based on asymmetric and symmetric re-entrant structures, capillary transistors are proposed and realized to programmably adjust the capillary direction, height, and width, which are envisioned to function as switches/valves and amplifiers/attenuators for highly efficient liquid patterning, desalination, and biochemical microreaction in 3D space.

Abstract:Biological pores regulate the cellular traffic of a diverse collection of molecules, often with extremely high selectivity. Given the ubiquity of charge‐based separation in nature, understanding the link between the charged functionalities and the ion transport activities is essential for designing delicate separations, with the correlation being comparatively underdeveloped. Herein, the effect of charge density from the impact of pore structure is decoupled using a multivariate strategy for the construction of covalent organic framework‐based membranes. How the density of charged sites in the nanofluidic membranes affect the ion transport activity with particular emphasis on Li+ and Mg2+ ions, relevant to the challenge of salt‐lake lithium mining is systematically investigated. Systematic control of the charge distribution produces membranes with numerous advantages, overcoming the long‐term challenge of Li+/Mg2+ separation. The top membrane exhibits an outstanding equilibrium selectivity for Li+ over Mg2+ and operational stability under diffusion dialysis and electrodialysis conditions (Li+/Mg2+ up to 500), qualifying it as a potential candidate for lithium extraction. It is anticipated that the developed nanofluidic membrane platform can be further leveraged to tackle other challenges in controlled separation processes.

Abstract:Membrane-based osmotic power harvesting is a strategy for sustainable power generation. 2D nanofluids with high ion conductivity and selectivity are emerging candidates for osmotic energy conversion. However, the ion diffusion under nanoconfinement is hindered by homogeneous 2D membranes with monotonic charge regulation and severe concentration polarization, which results in an undesirable power conversion performance. Here, an asymmetric nanochannel membrane with a two-layered structure is reported, in which the angstrom-scale channels of 2D transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) act as a screening layer for controlling ion transport, and the nanoscale pores of the block copolymer (BCP) are the pH-responsive arrays with an ordered nanovoid structure. The heterogeneous nanofluidic device exhibits an asymmetric charge distribution and enlarged 1D BCP porosity under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively; this improves the gradient-driven ion diffusion, allowing a high-performance osmotic energy conversion with a power density of up to 6.74 W m−2 by mixing artificial river water and seawater. Experiments and theoretical simulations indicate that the tunable asymmetric heterostructure contributes to impairing the concentration polarization and enhancing the ion flux. This efficient osmotic energy generator can advance the fundamental understanding of the MXene-based heterogeneous nanofluidic devices as a paradigm for membrane-based energy conversion technologies.

Abstract:The nanofluidic ion transporting channels for harvesting blue osmotic energy between river water and seawater have received great attentions recently. However, the design of excellent ion selective nanochannel membranes while retaining high mechanical strength and ion flux remains a challenge. Herein, we present a novel multi-stage heterogeneous nanochannel membranes consisting of alternating TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs) and MXene layers inspired by the multi-layer structure of natural soil. The ingenious binding of "soft layer" of TOCNFs acting as ion selective layer and "hard layer" of MXene acting as ion permeable/structural support layer contributes to the fast cationic transport through the robust nanochannel membranes. In hypersaline solutions, a remarkable power density of 95.13 W m −2 is produced. This work provides a new strategy for heterogeneous nanochannel membranes for osmotic energy generation.

Abstract:Osmotic energy from the ocean has been thoroughly studied, but that from saline-alkali lakes is constrained by the ion-exchange membranes due to the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, stemming from the unfavorable structure of nanoconfined channels, pH tolerance, and chemical stability of the membranes. Inspired by the rapid water transport in xylem conduit structures, we propose a horizontal transport MXene (H-MXene) with ionic sequential transport nanochannels, designed to endure extreme saline-alkali conditions while enhancing ion selectivity and permeability. The H-MXene demonstrates superior ion conductivity of 20.67 S m−1 in 1 M NaCl solution and a diffusion current density of 308 A m−2 at a 10-fold salinity gradient of NaCl solution, significantly outperforming the conventional vertical transport MXene (V-MXene). Both experimental and simulation studies have confirmed that H-MXene represents a novel approach to circumventing the permeability-selectivity trade-off. Moreover, it exhibits efficient ion transport capabilities, addressing the gap in saline-alkali osmotic power generation.
