Abstract:Chinese sociologists have made two contributions to the property rights studies of contemporary Chinese society. One contribution is that they have revealed that the property rights contracts of rural collective assets are based on principles of fairness—the principle of survival,the principle of equality to community members, the principle of taking land's boundary as delimitation, and the principle that benefits belongs to investors. The other contribution is that they have discovered that the rules of property rights delimitation are diverse and uncertain in China, and the clients often rely on their own might to choose rules and to advocate their rights. The first contribution can help us understand the logic of social construction of "collective ownership", but lacks logical inference in the end. The other contribution is a challenge to a conclusion of the game theory of evolution—the local confirmity affect of institutional evolution, however, the challenge needs more empirical evidence to be rigorous.

Abstract:There are many instances in nature of animals having a form of property rights, a respect for mine and thine. This paper addresses the question of how a norm of respecting property rights can emerge within a group of individuals without access to third party enforcement. Building upon work in economics and biology, an agent based model is presented that examines the processes by which property rights emerge within a population. Consistent with findings in biology and evolutionary economics, this process dispenses with deliberately planned creation of property rights and demonstrates their spontaneous emergence by virtue of a few simple factors. Key to this emergence is the endowment effect, which causes owners of a good to be more willing to fight against a challenger to retain possession. This asymmetry in action creates a strong tendency towards challengers respecting the possession claims of owners over time, resulting in emergent property rights.

Abstract:Abstract Why are impartial institutions such as formalized property rights so important for the emergence of impersonal trade? Previous literature has stressed the role of such institutions in providing third-party enforcement to shield strangers from locals’ opportunism. We document the existence of a second mechanism based on the role of formalized property rights in inducing respect for the property of strangers, regardless of enforcement. Ten years after the randomized introduction of formal property rights across rural Benin, we conducted a taking-dictator-game experiment in which participants could appropriate the endowment of an anonymous stranger from a different village. Even if enforcement institutions are absent and peer effects are silenced by design, participants from villages where the reform was implemented took significantly less than those in control villages. We further give consideration to several possible transmission channels and discuss their plausibility (JEL: D02, D91, K11, K42).

Abstract:We develop an evolutionary game model to reveal the theoretical basis for the assignment of property right, where both plaintiff and defendant argue for their rights by claiming their reliance investment. We allow for the possibility that the value of the total product depend not only on the investment conferred by the owner but also on the reliance investment provided by the trespasser. The resulting evolutionary stable set of preferences shows that the endowment effect hardwired to the owners and trespassers depends on the difference of productivities among both parties and the density of owners within the population.

Abstract:Gallice and Monzón (Econ J 129(621):2137–2154, 2019) present present a natural environment that sustains full co-operation in one-shot social dilemmas among a finite number of self-interested agents. They demonstrate that in a sequential public goods game, where agents lack knowledge of their position in the sequence but can observe some predecessors' actions, full contribution emerges in equilibrium due to agents' incentive to induce potential successors to follow suit. In this study, we aim to test the theoretical predictions of this model through an economic experiment. We conducted three treatments, varying the amount of information about past actions that a subject can observe, as well as their positional awareness. Through rigorous structural econometric analysis, we found that approximately 25% of the subjects behaved in line with the theoretical predictions. However, we also observed the presence of alternative behavioural types among the remaining subjects. The majority were classified as conditional co-operators, showing a willingness to cooperate based on others' actions. Some subjects exhibited altruistic tendencies, while only a small minority engaged in free-riding behaviour.

Abstract:Based on the discussions in political economics over past years about the origin of the property right and through exploring the formation and establishing process of the property right system,the paper has depicted the intrinsic mechanism of the emergence of the government.By applying the basic logic in economics it has been proposed and proved a hypothesis that the difference of the social main body in violence and production capabilities is of crucial importance in the formation and establishing process of the property right,and the incipient violent monopoly in social games comes from the specialized division of work formed by the comparative superiority of violence and production,and the change in the comparative superiority is an intrinsic motive force triggering a change in the system.Meanwhile,at the beginning of the emergence of the government,contrary to what is stated in previous literatures-it is just the third enforcement mechanism for property rights,the government may be most likely an endogenous role deriving from social games.
Trust with Private and Common Property: Effects of Stronger Property Right Entitlements

Abstract:Is mutually beneficial cooperation in trust games more prevalent with private property or common property? Does the strength of property right entitlement affect the answer? Cox, Ostrom, Walker, et al. [1] report little difference between cooperation in private and common property trust games. We assign stronger property right entitlements by requiring subjects to meet a performance quota in a real effort task to earn their endowments. We report experiment treatments with sequential choice and strategy responses. We find that cooperation is lower in common property trust games than in private property trust games, which is an idiosyncratic prediction of revealed altruism theory [2]. Demonstrable differences and similarities between our strategy response and sequential choice data provide insight into the how these protocols can yield different results from hypothesis tests even when they are eliciting the same behavioral patterns across treatments.

Abstract:Abstract To address issues like the tragedy of the commons, reputation mechanisms prove effective in promoting the emergence of cooperative behavior in social dilemmas. Previous research assumed that the increment of reputation is a fixed constant, however, the historical behavior of individuals with time preferences affects their reputation fluctuations on different scales. Inspired by this, we propose a framework for spatial public goods game that incorporates a reputation discount accumulation model with time preferences. In this model, players are classified as either long-sighted players or short-sighted players based on the significance of their historical behavior. Compared with short-sighted players, long-sighted players are more concerned with the impact of historical behaviors on the next game. Simulation results show that long-sighted cooperative players can resist the invasion of short-sighted defectors, and short-sighted defection strategies are eventually replaced by long-sighted cooperative strategies. This indicates that a higher discount factor facilitates the generation and maintenance of cooperation.

Abstract:A model is developed where opening to trade affects a dynamic common-pool resource stock and welfare through a community's voting decision to institute a property rights regime regulating the stock. The model finds that resource stock levels can decline even when a Markov perfect equilibrium path for labor and property rights regimes are chosen to maximize welfare. Thus, opening to trade can be welfare maximizing even when resource stock declines. Experimental results show that under certain conditions, subjects briefly follow a Markov perfect equilibrium path for property rights regime choice but labor allocations are myopically chosen indicating that some resource dynamics may be considered by subjects.

Abstract:In spatial public goods games (SPGG), social exclusion is regarded as a strategy more efficient than punishment for mitigating first-order free-riding behaviors. In the traditional exclusion model, exclusion actions are often taken after the game has concluded, by modifying the payoff structure to ensure that defection strategies do not yield benefits. However, this implies that defectors are still allowed to participate throughout the entirety of the game. We propose the establishment of an access system based on reputation, purposefully filtering players to preclude low-reputation individuals prone to free-riding from participating in the game, thus circumventing exploitative strategies, minimizing risks, and enhancing cooperative efficiency. In our study, we have established two models governing exclusionary behaviors within the reputation-based access system, using homogeneous exclusion probability and heterogeneous exclusion probability respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that both models significantly foster cooperation and effectively address the problem of second-order free-riding. The homogeneous exclusion probability model approximates the exclusion efficiency of traditional exclusion strategies under higher exclusion probabilities, whereas the heterogeneous model, influenced by varying intensities of exclusion, surpasses traditional strategies in efficacy at higher levels of exclusion intensity. This research aids in better understanding the impact of reputation-based access systems on free-riding behavior in real-world scenarios.

Abstract:In a social dilemma game group members are allowed to decide if they contribute to the joint venture or not. As a consequence, defectors, who do not invest but only enjoy the mutual benefit, prevail and the system evolves onto the tragedy of the common state. This unfortunate scenario can be avoided if participation is not obligatory but only happens with a given probability. But what if we also consider a player's individual wealth when to decide about participation? To address this issue we propose a model in which the probabilistic participation in the public goods game is combined with a conditional investment mode that is based on individual wealth: if a player's wealth exceeds a threshold value then it is qualified and can participate in the joint venture. Otherwise, the participation is forbidden in the investment interactions. We show that if only probabilistic participation is considered, spatially structured populations cannot support cooperation better than well-mixed populations where full defection state can also be avoided for small participation probabilities. By adding the wealth-based criterion of participation, however, structured populations are capable to augment network reciprocity relevantly and allow cooperator strategy to dominate in a broader parameter interval.

Abstract:We report the results from a series of experiments designed to investigate behavior in two settings that are frequently posited in the policy literature as generating different outcomes: private property and common property. The experimental settings closely parallel earlier experimental studies of the investment or trust game. The primary research question relates to the effect of the initial allocation of property rights on the level of trust that subjects will extend to others with whom they are linked. We find that assigning the initial endowments as common property of each of N pairs of a first mover and second mover leads to marginally greater trust than when the initial endowments are fully owned by the two individual movers as their respective private property. Subjects' decisions are also shown to be correlated with attitudes toward trust and fairness that are measured in post‐experiment questionnaires.

Abstract:Economists and psychologists have long argued the origin of wealth influences individual behavior. In a previous study (Cherry et al., 2005), we found the origin of endowment did not significantly affect behavior in linear public good games with summation contribution technology. In such games, however, both Nash behavior (everybody gives nothing) and social optimal behavior (everybody gives the entire endowment) call for symmetric levels of contributions. Results from this new study indicate that the origin of wealth might matter in more asymmetric situations, such as in a best-shot public good game with heterogeneous groups.

Abstract:We study the evolution of cooperation in spatial prisoner’s dilemma games, whereby each player extends its interaction scope by trying to interact with a certain number of encounters randomly chosen from its non-neighbors, in addition to its permanently linked nearest neighbors. Furthermore, the non-neighbors treat the initiative interactions in two scenarios: definitely accepting that from the cooperators, whereas guardedly interacting with defectors with an acceptance probability which may take arbitrary value in [0,1]. Importantly, our results reveal that the proposed encounter mechanism is a potent extrinsic factor that is able to boost cooperation when appropriately adjusting the values of the encounter number and acceptance probability, though rational players would always defect in one-shot encounters, regardless of the action from the counterparts. We hope our studies may help understand that the proposed encounter mechanism is also an important ingredient of a flourishing cooperative society.
Ours, not yours: Property rights, poaching and deterrence in common-pool resources

Abstract:Governments allocate property rights in different ways to protect common-pool resources (CPR) from over-harvesting, but this can generate conflict between those with access (“insiders”) and those without (“outsiders”). We use a laboratory experiment to determine how mechanisms to allocate property rights influence the decentralized management and defense of a CPR. We first vary whether CPR property rights are earned or randomly assigned. Insiders (subjects holding the property rights) decide how much to harvest from the CPR. Outsiders observe the insiders’ harvest and then choose how much to poach from the CPR. We also vary whether insiders have the ability to deter outsiders with costly punishment after observing poaching. We find that insiders who earned the property right were more likely to defend the CPR and impose significantly more punishment, leading to a significant reduction in extreme poaching. However, lower levels of poaching often went unpunished under both earned and assigned rights. While earned property rights can improve the coordinated deterrence of outsiders, they are insufficient to completely eliminate poaching, and conflict between rights-holders and poachers.

Abstract:It has been a long-lasting pursuit to promote cooperation, and this study aims to promote cooperation via the combination of social stratification and the spatial prisoners' dilemma game. It is previously assumed that agents share the identical payoff matrix, but the stratification or diversity exists and exerts influences in real societies. Thus, two additional classes, elites and scoundrels, derive from and coexist with the existing class, commons. Three classes have different payoff matrices. We construct a model where agents play the prisoners' dilemma game with neighbors. It indicates that stratification and temptation jointly influence cooperation. Temptation permanently reduces cooperation; elites play a positive role in promoting cooperation while scoundrels undermine it. As the temptation getting larger and larger, elites play a more and more positive and critical role while scoundrels' negative effect becomes weaker and weaker, and it is more obvious when temptation goes beyond its threshold.

Abstract:The Public Goods Game (PGG) encounters hurdles when donations are scarce, resulting in failed game initiations. To investigate such phenomena, we propose a threshold-based spatial PGG model operating on a lattice with periodic boundaries. Players strategically choose between cooperation (C) and defection (D), with PGG initiation determined by a cooperative contribution threshold. Additionally, we introduce an adjustment factor for player reputation, reflecting how individual strategy choices and responses from interacting partners influence reputation changes. We hypothesize that within non-initiated PGG, defectors' reputations decrease, while within initiated PGG, defectors are evaluated and penalized by cooperators. Our findings reveal that higher initiation thresholds can enhance final cooperation levels. Moreover, the inclusion of the reputation adjustment factor acts as a catalyst for cooperative behavior. Interestingly, greater uncertainty in strategy adoption is associated with increased cooperative levels under higher initiation thresholds. This study adds new insights into the evolution of cooperation in the context of spatial structure.

Abstract:The historical behavior of a defector in a group is usually considered in the determination of the intensity of the punishment to be applied to the defector. Because exclusion is a more severe form of punishment, we introduce a conditional punishment that allows punishers to choose between traditional punishment and exclusion. The specific form of punishment is chosen to fit the specific reputation of the defector. A good reputation garners a traditional milder punishment, such as a fine, whereas a bad reputation merits exclusion. The historical behaviors of the individuals in a group are recorded to evaluate their reputations. Those whose reputations fall below a designated threshold are regarded as bad. We study the effects of reputation thresholds, fines, enhancement factors, and exclusion costs on the evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods games. Simulations show that higher thresholds are more conducive to the evolution of cooperation. An extremely small enhancement factor can induce individuals to cooperate when the threshold is relatively high. Cooperation also appears with smaller enhancement factors for higher fines or lower exclusion costs. These results may expand our understanding of how these two strategies of punishment promote cooperation.
