Abstract:Interest in computer science is growing. As a result, computer science (CS) and related departments are experiencing an explosive increase in undergraduate enrollments and unprecedented demand from other disciplines for learning computing. According to the 2014 CRA Taulbee Survey, the number of undergraduates declaring a computing major at Ph.D. granting departments in the US has increased 60% from 2011-2014 and the number of degrees granted has increased by 34% from 2008-2013. However, this growth is not limited to higher education. New York City, San Francisco and Oakland public schools will soon be offering computer science to all students at all schools from preschool to 12th grade, although it will be an elective for high school students. This unprecedented demand means that CS departments are likely to teach not only more students in the coming decades, but more diverse students, with more varied backgrounds, motivations, preparations, and abilities. This growth is an unparalleled opportunity to expand the reach of computing education. However, this growth is also a unique research challenge, as we know very little about how best to teach our current students, let alone the students soon to arrive. The burgeoning field of Computing Education Research (CER) is positioned to address this challenge by answering research questions such as, how should we teach computer science, from programming to advanced principles, to a broader and more diverse audience? We argue that computer science departments should lead the way in establishing CER as a foundational research area of computer science, discovering the best ways to teach CS, and inventing the best technologies with which to teach it. This white paper provides a snapshot of the current state of CER and makes actionable recommendations for academic leaders to grow CER as a successful research area in their departments.

Computer Science in Mathematics Preservice Teacher Education

Abstract:In recent years, significant resources have been invested in increasing access and opportunities to computer science (CS) for elementary school students in the US. However even with the increased advancements and initiatives to embed CS into the elementary school curriculum, little has been done to examine the curriculum and pedagogical implications for mathematics preservice teacher education. For these initiatives to be successful, there is a need to train preservice teachers to integrate CS concepts into their teaching. This chapter reports on a research project that investigated the use of a visual programming language on pre-service teachers' understanding of basic computer science ideas and how these can be integrated into the teaching of mathematics. The purpose of the project was to help preservice teachers develop a basic knowledge of computer science concepts and to help develop subject-specific understanding of how to integrate these concepts.

Abstract:In this paper we describe our experience in developing curriculum courses aimed at graduate students in emerging computational fields, including biology and medical science. We focus primarily on computational data analysis and statistical analysis, while at the same time teaching students best practices in coding and software development. Our approach combines a theoretical background and practical applications of concepts. The outcomes and feedback we have obtained so far have revealed several issues: students in these particular areas lack instruction like this although they would tremendously benefit from it; we have detected several weaknesses in the formation of students, in particular in the statistical foundations but also in analytical thinking skills. We present here the tools, techniques and methodology we employ while teaching and developing this type of courses. We also show several outcomes from this initiative, including potential pathways for fruitful multi-disciplinary collaborations.

Abstract:Researchers have hypothesized strong connections between Computational Thinking (CT) practices and STEM learning. However, there is a lack of consensus on what constitutes an adequate set of CT knowledge and skills. In this paper, we present an initial framework for evaluating students' CT learning. We introduce the primary CT concepts and practices that students can learn and apply in a learning by modeling environment. Our overall goal is to develop assessments that study the synergy between STEM and CT concepts in K-12 curricula. Towards this end, we discuss the results from a teacher-led classroom study we conducted on STEM- and CT-learning in our CTSiM environment.
The Role Gender Differences In Computational Thinking Confidence Levels Plays In Stem Applications

Abstract:Significant research has been done on gender disparities in STEM and computer science with the goal of broadening participation in these male-dominated fields. At the same time, the role of computational thinking (CT) as a tool to improve computer science skills along with STEM learning is becoming increasingly significant. This work seeks to add to this research through an analysis of the role confidence in computational thinking plays in developing STEM engagement and abilities. In the study reported in this paper, 40 high school students (21 girls and 19 boys) completed a Scratch project on modeling inelastic collisions in their Physics class. Pre- and post-surveys were conducted to analyze confidence levels in CT. Results showed a statistically significant difference in confidence levels in four CT dimensions: abstraction, flow of control, decomposition, and conditional logic. The results show that boys were more confident than girls in applying each of these dimensions. However, performance on the modeling assignment showed no statistical difference. We discuss the results and its applications to future work.

Abstract:A science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-influenced classroom requires learning activities that provide hands-on experiences with technological tools to encourage problem-solving skills (Brophy et al. in J Eng Educ 97(3):369–387, 2008; Matarić et al. in AAAI spring symposium on robots and robot venues: resources for AI education, pp 99–102, 2007). The study aimed to bring computational thinking, an applicable skill set in computer science, into existing mathematics and programming education in elementary classrooms. An essential component of computational thinking is the ability to think like a computer scientist when confronted with a problem (Grover and Pea in Educ Res 42(1):38–43. doi:10.3102/0013189X12463051, 2013). Computational perspectives (Berland and Wilensky in J Sci Educ Technol 24(5):628–647. doi:10.1007/s10956-015-9552-x, 2015) refer to the frame of reference programmers or computer scientists adopt when approaching a problem. The study examined the effects of taking computational perspectives through various degrees of embodied activities (i.e., full vs. low) on students’ achievement in mathematics and programming. The study employed a 2 (full vs. low embodiment) × 2 (with vs. without computational perspective taking) factorial condition to evaluate four learning conditions from a combination of embodiment and computational perspective-taking practice. The results from this experimental study (N = 66 kindergarten and first graders) suggest that full-embody activities combined with the practice of computational perspective-taking in solving mathematics problem improved mathematics understanding and programming skills as demonstrated in Scrath Jr. among novice young learners. Moreover, the practice of using a computational perspective significantly improved students’ understanding of core programming concepts regardless of the level of embodiment. The article includes recommendations for how to make the computational thinking process more concrete and relevant within the context of a standard curriculum, particularly mathematics.

Abstract:Computer science enrollments have started to rise again, but the percentage of women undergraduates in computer science is still low. Some studies indicate this might be due to a lack of awareness of computer science at the high school level. We present our experiences running a 5-year, high school outreach program that introduces information about computer science within the context of required chemistry courses. We developed interactive worksheets using Molecular Workbench that help the students learn chemistry and computer science concepts related to relevant events such as the gulf oil spill. Our evaluation of the effectiveness of this approach indicates that the students do become more aware of computer science as a discipline, but system support issues in the classroom can make the approach difficult for teachers and discouraging for the students.

Abstract:Computing is an increasingly important component of many jobs and demand for computing skills is far outpacing the number of computationally literate workers available. Non-majors, adult learners, and other non-traditional students can potentially fill some of these positions. However, traditional CS education pathways do not currently address the unique needs of these students. New approaches to CS education that fit with the goals and lifestyles of non-traditional CS students are needed. In line with Computational Media approaches known to be successful with non-majors, we designed and implemented two graduate- level courses, one using a Pixelsense and the other using Arduino, to teach computational thinking, programming, and design skills. We compare findings from these two courses with specific focus on non-major graduate students, but including topics relevant for traditional CS educators, such as, the importance of choice of platform, structure of assignments, maintaining student motivation, and the impact of self-guided final projects.

Abstract:Recent advancements in technology have opened up new avenues for educators to facilitate teaching and leverage more learning access in the digital age. As the demand for computational skills continues to grow in preparation for future careers, both teachers and students face the challenge of developing problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills within an emerging digital landscape. Technology adoption, big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence pose ongoing challenges for both teachers and students in adapting to the changing workforce development landscape. To tackle these challenges, the paper highlights the importance of exploring the implications of learning sciences in classroom teaching, developing a holistic vision for professional development in education, and understanding the complexities of teacher change. To effectively implement these components, it is crucial to adopt design approaches that prioritize student ownership in education and embrace the principles of inclusive education to reconceptualize the teaching practices in education and technology.

Abstract:Decisions about participation in computer science and engineering opportunities are often made prior to high school, and these decisions are frequently mediated by prior experience, interest, and sense of fit with community. In this article, we investigate how the Digital Youth Divas, an out-of-school program for middle school girls from non-dominant communities, engaged participants in computational thinking linked to their broader interests, home networks, and continuing opportunities. Results indicate increases in knowledge measures for girls with and without prior learning experiences and provide evidence that through project work and a strong focus on building community, girls engaged in computational practices in ways that shifted or provided new computational perceptions about themselves and the domain. This exploratory study of the Digital Youth Divas program emphasizes the importance of understanding and supporting computational perceptions alongside deepening knowledge and experience.

Abstract:Article considers role of the school course of computer science and its section related to programming in the formation of skills to think logically, the ability to work with abstractions, and readiness for systemic thinking. Existing approaches for bridging the gap between the level of graduate training and the requirements of employers are described. One of the most promising is proposed to be the paradigm of the STEM. Training in the framework of it is focused not only on developing the necessary theoretical knowledge, but on developing practical skills of work with complex technical and information objects from the students, but also on the development of creative, critical and computational thinking. Learning programming is included in the scope of Informatics is an effective way of developing logical and analytical thinking, as based on the study of such basic concepts as algorithmic structures and principles of construction of algorithms. The article focuses on the social aspect of learning programming. The area of computational perspectives includes the skill of outsourcing for tasks. Mastered his disciples formed a group, continuing the joint work in the context of learning other disciplines.

Abstract:Computational thinking is a key skill for space science graduates, who must apply advanced problem-solving skills to model complex systems, analyse big data sets, and develop control software for mission-critical space systems. We describe our work using Design Thinking to understand the challenges that students face in learning these skills. In the MSc Space Science & Technology at University College Dublin, we have used insights from this process to develop new teaching strategies, including improved assessment rubrics, supported by workshops promoting collaborative programming techniques. We argue that postgraduate level space science courses play a valuable role in developing more advanced computational skills in early-career space scientists.

Abstract:Nolan and Temple Lang argued for the fundamental role of computing in the statistics curriculum. In the intervening decade, the statistics education community has acknowledged that computational skills are as important to statistics and data science practice as mathematics. There remains a notable gap, however, between our intentions and our actions. In this special issue of the Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education, we have assembled a collection of articles that (1) suggest creative structures to integrate computing, (2) describe novel data science skills and habits, and (3) propose ways to teach computational thinking. We believe that it is critical for the community to redouble our efforts to embrace sophisticated computing in the statistics and data science curriculum. We hope that these articles provide useful guidance for the community to move these efforts forward.

Abstract:Abstract In the face of globalization and the rapid evolution of information technology, higher education, particularly in computer science, encounters both challenges and opportunities. This paper investigates strategies for fostering innovation and digital competency among university computer science students. Through an analysis of teaching methodologies across various institutions, student development, and industry collaborations, we propose a comprehensive educational framework. We evaluate and refine our student innovation ability assessment system by employing both quantitative and qualitative approaches, including the entropy weight method and gray correlation analysis. By updating curriculum content, prioritizing hands-on learning, and enhancing industry partnerships, we demonstrate a marked improvement in students’ programming and practical skills—showing 20% and 25% increases, respectively. Our findings advocate for a holistic revamp of teaching approaches, course material, and university-enterprise collaborations, aligning computer science education with the demands of the digital age.

Abstract:Computational thinking (CT) is now widely recognized as an important literacy skill for students in today's digital world. However, many existing initiatives are framed to present a narrow focus on the knowledge and skills related to how to use computing tools. In this article, I describe the gap between theoretical discussions on CT as a literacy for learning and practical implementations of various CT or CT-related curricula. Then, I discuss possible challenges in addressing the gap. Finally, the article will explore a conceptual framework for integrating CT learning with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in a way that is accessible to all students. By highlighting these challenges and proposing solutions, this article aims to contribute towards building a more comprehensive and effective approach to bringing CT into K-12 education.

Abstract:Computer science and computer science education are marked by gender and racial disparities. To increase the number and diversity of students engaging in computer science, young children need opportunities to develop interest and foundational understandings, including computational thinking (CT). Accordingly, elementary teachers need to understand CT, and how to integrate it into their practice. We investigate how to best support elementary teachers in learning to integrate CT into their science teaching through a CT professional development experience for elementary teachers. The professional development consisted of two parts: a professional development workshop and a science teacher inquiry group. In this study, we sought to understand if and how teachers' views on integrating CT into their teaching practice changed following their participation in a yearlong professional development experience on CT. Based on our analysis, we offer suggestions for future research and implications for the design of professional development for integrating CT into science education.

Abstract:The shortage of people trained in STEM fields is becoming acute, and universities and colleges are straining to satisfy this demand. In the case of computer science, for instance, the number of US students taking introductory courses has grown three-fold in the past decade. Recently, massive open online courses (MOOCs) have been promoted as a way to ease this strain. This at best provides access to education. The bigger challenge though is coping with heterogeneous backgrounds of different students, retention, providing feedback, and assessment. Personalized education relying on computational tools can address this challenge. While automated tutoring has been studied at different times in different communities, recent advances in computing and education technology offer exciting opportunities to transform the manner in which students learn. In particular, at least three trends are significant. First, progress in logical reasoning, data analytics, and natural language processing has led to tutoring tools for automatic assessment, personalized instruction including targeted feedback, and adaptive content generation for a variety of subjects. Second, research in the science of learning and human-computer interaction is leading to a better understanding of how different students learn, when and what types of interventions are effective for different instructional goals, and how to measure the success of educational tools. Finally, the recent emergence of online education platforms, both in academia and industry, is leading to new opportunities for the development of a shared infrastructure. This CCC workshop brought together researchers developing educational tools based on technologies such as logical reasoning and machine learning with researchers in education, human-computer interaction, and cognitive psychology.
Education for a Future in Crisis: Developing a Humanities-Informed STEM Curriculum

Abstract:In the popular imagination, science and technology are often seen as fields of knowledge production critical to social progress and a cooperative future. This optimistic portrayal of technological advancement also features prominently in internal discourses amongst scientists, industry leaders, and STEM students alike. Yet, an overwhelming body of research, investigation, and first-person accounts highlight the varying ways modern science, technology, and engineering industries contribute to the degradation of our changing environments and exploit and harm global low-income and marginalized populations. By and large, siloed higher-education STEM curricula provide inadequate opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to critically analyze the historical and epistemological foundations of scientific knowledge production and even fewer tools to engage with and respond to modern community-based cases. Here, we describe the development of a humanities- and social sciences-informed curriculum designed to address the theory, content, and skill-based needs of traditional STEM students considering technoscientific careers. In essence, this course is designed to foster behavior change, de-center dominant ways of knowing in the sciences, and bolster self-reflection and critical-thinking skills to equip the developing STEM workforce with a more nuanced and accurate understanding of the social, political, and economic role of science and technology. This curriculum has the potential to empower STEM-educated professionals to contribute to a more promising, inclusive future. Our framework foregrounds key insights from science and technology studies, Black and Native feminisms, queer theory, and disability studies, alongside real-world case studies using critical pedagogies.

Abstract:Computational thinking (CT) uses concepts that are essential to computing and information science to solve problems, design and evaluate complex systems, and understand human reasoning and behavior. This way of thinking has important implications in computer sciences as well as in almost every other field. Therefore, we contend that CT should be taught in elementary schools and included in every university’s educational curriculum. Several studies that measure the impact of teaching programming, analytical thinking, and CT have been conducted. In this review, we analyze and discuss findings from these studies and highlight the importance of learning programming with a focus on the development of CT skills at a young age. We also describe the tools that are available to improve the teaching of CT and provide a state-of-the-art overview of how programming is being taught at schools and universities in Colombia and around the world.
