Abstract:Wearable optical sensors are attracting intensive research interests owing to their advantage of high sensitivity, fast response, and immunity to electromagnetic interferences. However, tunable optical properties and reconfigurable sensor structures remain great challenges for the wearable optical sensors. Herein, flexible liquid-filled fiber adapters (FLFFAs), which are sensitive to mechanical stimuli, are demonstrated. The novel FLFFA consists of a soft liquid-filled tubing and two silica optical fibers. The liquid core bestows the FLFFA both tunability and reconfigurability in sensing performance. Deformation of the tubing through bending or pressing results in wavelength-insensitive changes in light transmission. By measuring the output intensity, the FLFFA based sensors achieve high angle resolution (0.18 degrees) and low detection limit (0.7 mN) for bending and pressure sensing, respectively. The superior sensing properties together with mechanical flexibility and robustness enable real-time monitoring of finger joint motion, respiration, and wrist pulse. Benefiting from an LED charge-coupled device (CCD) signal recording system, a 4 x 3 keyboard is realized by simultaneously measuring the output signals of 12 FLFFAs. The FLFFA provides a promising method to detect subtle physiological signals and may find applications in healthcare devices, artificial skins, and sensor networks.

Abstract:Building prosthetics indistinguishable from human limbs to accurately receive and transmit sensory information to users not only promises to radically improve the lives of amputees, but also shows potential in a range of robotic applications. Currently, a mainstream approach is to embed electrical or optical sensors with force/thermal sensing functions on the surface or inside of prosthetic fingers. Compared with electrical sensing technologies, tactile sensors based on stretchable optical waveguides have the advantages of easy fabrication, chemical safety, environmental stability, and compatibility with prosthetic structural materials. However, so far, research has mainly focused on the perception of finger joint motion or external press, and there is still a lack of study on optical sensors with fingertip tactile capabilities(such as texture, hardness, slip detection, etc.). Here we report a 3D printing prosthetic finger with flexible chromatic optical waveguides implanted at the fingertip. The finger achieves distributed displacement/force sensing detection, and exhibits high sensitivity, fast response and good stability. The finger can be used to conduct active sensory experiments, and the detection quantities include object contour, hardness, slip direction and speed, temperature, etc. Finally, exploratory research on identifying and manipulating objects is carried out with this finger. The developed prosthetic finger can artificially recreate touch perception and realize complex functions such as note-writing analysis and braille recognition.

Monolithically Integrated Stretchable Photonics

Abstract:Mechanically stretchable photonics provides a new geometric degree of freedom for photonic system design and foresees applications ranging from artificial skins to soft wearable electronics. Here we describe the design and experimental realization of the first single-mode stretchable photonic devices. These devices, made of chalcogenide glass and epoxy polymer materials, are monolithically integrated on elastomer substrates. To impart mechanical stretching capability to devices built using these intrinsically brittle materials, our design strategy involves local substrate stiffening to minimize shape deformation of critical photonic components, and interconnecting optical waveguides assuming a meandering Euler spiral geometry to mitigate radiative optical loss. Devices fabricated following such design can sustain 41% nominal tensile strain and 3000 stretching cycles without measurable degradation in optical performance. In addition, we present a rigorous analytical model to quantitatively predict stress-optical coupling behavior in waveguide devices of arbitrary geometry without using a single fitting parameter.

Abstract:Conventional integrated photonic devices are fabricated on rigid semiconductor or dielectric substrates and are therefore inherently incompatible with soft biological tissues. Over the past few years, we have developed a suite of active and passive photonic devices and systems integrated on plastic substrates which can be bent, twisted, and stretched without compromising their optical performance. Here we review the latest progress in this emerging field, and discuss the rational material and mechanical engineering principles underlying the extraordinary flexibility of these photonic structures. Leveraging these design strategies, we demonstrated bendable glass waveguide circuits, flexible waveguide-integrated nanomembrane photodetectors, and stretchable photonics.

Abstract:The past decades have witnessed the rapid development in soft, stretchable, and biocompatible devices for applications in biomedical monitoring, personal healthcare, and human-machine interfaces. In particular, the design of soft devices in optics has attracted tremendous interests attributed to their distinct advantages such as inherent electrical safety, high stability in long-term operation, potential to be miniaturized, and free of electromagnetic interferences. As the alternatives to conventional rigid optical waveguides, considerable efforts have been made to develop light-guiding devices by using various transparent and elastic polymers, which offer desired physiomechanical properties and enable wearable/implantable applications in optical sensing, diagnostics, and therapy. Here, we review recent progress in soft and stretchable optical waveguides and sensors, including advanced structural design, fabrication strategies, and functionalities. Furthermore, the potential applications of those optical devices for various wearable and biomedical applications are discussed. It is expected that the newly emerged soft and stretchable optical technologies will provide a safe and reliable alternative to next-generation, smart wearables and healthcare devices.

Abstract:Flexible and stretchable optoelectronics have attracted attention in recent years due to their remarkable capabilities for use in wearable computers, personal monitors, and other systems. These devices are conformal to human skin or tissue due to mechanical compliance, which is extremely suitable for biomedical or clinical applications, such as bionic devices, monitors, or curing diseases. This paper presents an overview of the flexible and stretchable inorganic optoelectronics, including mechanical design, photonic analysis, fabrication processing, some examples of the devices, and their applications in biomedical engineering. First, the recent technological advances in flexible designs and fabrication strategies are summarized. Then, the flexible and stretchable devices with different functionalities are described, including light-emitting devices, photodetectors, and other optical devices. Finally, we show the applications of flexible and stretchable optoelectronics on biomedical engineering. Abstract:Over the past few decades, optical waveguides have been increasingly used in wearable/implantable devices for on-body sensing. However, conventional optical waveguides are stiff, rigid, and brittle. A mismatch between conventional optical waveguides and complex biointerfaces makes wearable/implantable devices uncomfortable to wear and potentially unsafe. Soft and stretchable polymer optical waveguides not only inherit many advantages of conventional optical waveguides (e.g., immunity to electromagnetic interference and without electrical hazards) but also provide a new perspective for solving the mismatch between conventional optical waveguides and complex biointerfaces, which is essential for the development of light-based wearable/implantable sensors. In this review, polymer optical waveguides' unique properties, including flexibility, biocompatibility and biodegradability, porosity, and stimulus responsiveness, and their applications in the wearable/implantable field in recent years are summarized. Then, we briefly discuss the current challenges of high optical loss, unstable signal transmission, low manufacturing efficiency, and difficulty in deployment during implantation of flexible polymer optical waveguides, and propose some possible solutions to these problems.

Abstract:Stretchable electronics are of rapidly increasing interest due to their unique ability to function under complex deformations. Strain isolation of stiff functional components from the substrate represents a key challenge in the development of stretchable electronics since their mechanical mismatch may yield undesirable strains to degrade the device performance. The results presented here report an approach to develop a soft strain-isolating polymer substrate with programmable stiffness by spatioselective ultraviolet exposure for stretchable electronics. The approach being compatible with the well-established lithographic process reduces the fabrication complexity significantly and offers a simple yet robust strain-isolation mechanism to ensure the system stretchability of more than 100%. Combined experimental and numerical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of the design, fabrication, and operation of the strain-isolating substrate. Demonstration of this concept in a stretchable inorganic metal-based resistive temperature sensor and a stretchable organic photodiode array with unusually high performance shows the simplicity of the approach and the robustness in strain isolation in both component and device levels. This type of strain-isolation design not only creates promising routes for potential scalable manufacturing of stretchable electronics but also engineering opportunities for stretchable electronics involving the integration of various functional components, which require the quantitative control of the strain levels to achieve optimal performance.

Abstract:Flexible and stretchable strain sensors are essential to developing smart wearable devices for monitoring human activities. Such sensors have been extensively exploited with various conductive materials and structures, which, however, are normally in need of complex manufacturing processes and confronted with the challenge to achieve both large stretchability and high sensitivity. Here, we report a simple and low-cost optical strategy for the design of stretchable strain sensors which are capable of measuring large strains of 100% with a low detection limit (±0.09%), a fast responsivity (<12 ms), and high reproducibility (over 6000 cycles). The optical strain sensor (OS2) is fabricated by assembling plasmonic gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in stretchable elastomer-based optical fibers, where a core/cladding structure with step-index configuration is adopted for light confinement. The stretchable, GNP-incorporated optical fiber shows strong localized surface plasmon resonance effects that enable sensitive and reversible detection of strain deformations with high linearity and negligible hysteresis. The unique mechanical and sensing properties of the OS2 enable its assembling into clothing or mounting on skin surfaces for monitoring various human activities from physiological signals as subtle as wrist pulses to large motions of joint bending and hand gestures. We further apply the OS2 for quantitative analysis of motor disorders such as Parkinson's disease and demonstrate its compatibility in strong electromagnetic interference environments during functional magnetic resonance imaging, showing great promises for diagnostics and assessments of motor neuron diseases in clinics.

Abstract:The finger skin of human plays a key role in amplifying and transferring tactile signals to sensory receptors, and it provides design guidelines for next‐generation flexible tactile sensors. To enable robotic applications such as dexterous manipulation and tactile feedback, the functions of force sensing and slip detection are crucial for flexible tactile sensors. Here, a finger‐skin inspired flexible optical (FIFO) sensor based on optical microfiber is reported, and this sensor has fingerprint‐like surface with parallel ridges and resin/polydimethylsiloxane multilayer structure with different stiffness, mimicking the structural characteristics of human finger skin. With these design features, the sensor is capable of measuring force with high durability and detecting slip with high sensitivity and short response time. Time‐resolved response curve and its wavelet transform provide useful information related to grasping and slipping when the sensor is in contact with objects with different shapes and materials. As a proof‐of‐concept demonstration, the sensor directly attached onto a robotic gripper is capable of measuring grasping force and monitoring object slippage during manipulation tasks, indicating its potential applications in advanced robotics.

Abstract:A novel tactile sensing array based on elastic steel frame structure for prosthetic hand is proposed. The sensing units are mounted on the curving surface of a 3D printed sensor holder with five along the axial direction and four in the circumferential direction. Each sensing unit consists of a steel frame, a silicon gauge and flexible printed circuit board FPCB. Based on the piezoresistive effect, the sensing unit can measure the normal force and the shear force along the longitudinal direction. The finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate the mechanical performance of the sensing unit. Meanwhile, the solution of detecting the resultant force is proposed.

Abstract:The optogenetic probe has proven to be a valuable tool in neuroscience, owing to its specific stimulus properties. Mechanically flexible optogenetic probes are crucial for chronic and deep brain stimulation, minimizing tissue damage, and improving long-term stability and reliability. However, the current implantation of flexible polymer probes often requires the use of additional auxiliary tools, which complicate the surgical process and may cause severe inflammatory responses. In this paper, we propose a flexible polymer waveguide optogenetic probe designed to be inserted directly and precisely into the target brain area without additional assistance through geometric and mechanical optimization of the probe. It also exhibits superior long-term performance in minimizing the inflammatory response after implantation. We eventually succeed in modulating mouse locomotor speed by brain secondary motor cortex (M2) stimulation. This study provides a reference for the future development of flexible waveguide optogenetic probes for reliable and long-term implantation.

Abstract:Highly stretchable fiber sensors have attracted significant interest recently due to their applications in wearable electronics, human-machine interfaces, and biomedical implantable devices. Here, a scalable approach for fabricating stretchable multifunctional electrical and optical fiber sensors using a thermal drawing process is reported. The fiber sensors can sustain at least 580% strain and up to 750% strain with a helix structure. The electrical fiber sensor simultaneously exhibits ultrahigh stretchability (400%), high gauge factors (approximate to 1960), and excellent durability during 1000 stretching and bending cycles. It is also shown that the stretchable step-index optical fibers facilitate detection of bending and stretching deformation through changes in the light transmission. By combining both electrical and optical detection schemes, multifunctional fibers can be used for quantifying and distinguishing multimodal deformations such as bending and stretching. The fibers' utility and functionality in sensing and control applications are demonstrated in a smart glove for controlling a virtual hand model, a wrist brace for wrist motion tracking, fiber meshes for strain mapping, and real-time monitoring of multiaxial expansion and shrinkage of porcine bladders. These results demonstrate that the fiber sensors can be promising candidates for smart textiles, robotics, prosthetics, and biomedical implantable devices.

Abstract:In this research, a photonic-skin is designed to mimic the tactile perception of real skin. The specimen is made of silicon elastomer and inserted with optical fiber. The optical fiber is an instinctive and alternative sensor of tactile perception with high sensitivity and reliability, and combination with silicone substrate enables high stretchability to have a high wearability. According to the experimental results of tactile tracking, the specimen demonstrates the ability to detect the physical motions like tapping, rubbing and twisting with distinguishable signals. Moreover, the experimental results of on-body mounted perceptual tests (throat, forearm, and finger) validate the wearability with a high sensitivity of vocal vibration, muscle stretching, and bending movements. The photonic-skin has the characteristic of good spatial resolution, high sensitivity, high stretchability which will have wide applications in humanoid, robotic sensing, biomonitoring, perceptual prosthetics, etc.

Abstract:Tendon-driven robot's tension is important for accurately controlling. This paper presents the design philosophy of a stretchable optical sensor that is used to measure tendon tension between finger and actuator. The proposed sensor consists of flexible fiber, shell, light-emitting diode (LED) and PhotoDetector (PD). The tension sensor exploits the principle of total reflection of light to measure the length variation of flexible fiber. It has several advantages including low-cost, simple construction and direct measurement. Then manufacturing process and the circuit of the sensor are presented. Finally, the calibration experiments are implemented and the results show the effectiveness of the sensor.

Abstract:The perception capability of soft humanoid hand is very important to the implementation of friendly interactive and dexterous operation. The flexible optical bending sensor which is easy to be embedded into the soft finger is comprised of light emitting diode (LED), optical fiber and photo-sensitive sensor. The roughened optical fibers can generate light overflow. And the bend degree of soft fingers can be obtained by detecting the loss of light energy. The abilities of continuous movement detection, action gestures and object size recognition are implemented according to the following operations: ① calibrating the initial (unbent) and maximum bending statuses of soft fingers with normalization method; ② segmenting the normalized data by uniform, nonuniform and hysteresis segment method; ③ merging together the information of five fingers. The experiment results show that the proposed optical fiber bending sensor is able to detect the continuous sinusoidal movement status, correctly recognize various gestures and grasping postures and the object size. Combining hysteresis subsection method, the shortcoming of single point subsection oscillating near subsection point is overcome, and the recognition rate is improved. This optical flexible bending sensor has the advantages of electromagnetic immunity and easy to be embedded. It has important application value in soft robotic hand or soft actuator.
