Abstract:TiO2/diatomite photocatalysts were synthesized by a facile Sol-Gel method using diatomite as supporter and tetrabutyl titanate (TBOT) as precursor. The crystalline and morphological properties of catalysts with different calcination temperatures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Results reveal that the crystallite size becomes larger and the anatase phase transforms to the rutile phase at elevated temperature. Compared with unimmobilized TiO2, the diatomite supporter impedes the transformation and prevents nano-TiO2 particles from aggregation. The effect of calcination temperature on photocatalytic reactivities of these catalysts was investigated by UV-assisted degradation of 10 mg/L Rhodamine B (RhB). The sample calcined at 750℃ exhibits significantly enhanced reactivity with the removal rate of RhB up to about 100% after irradiation for 120 min, equivalent to that of Degussa P25 under similar conditions. The highest photocatalytic activity is observed in TiO2/diatomite calcined under 750℃ which can be attributed to the presence of anatase and rutile phases in an appropriate ratio at 9:1.
Influence of Preparation Method on Morphology and Photocatalysis Activity of Nanostructured TiO2.

Abstract:Supported TiO2 photocatalysts on aerosol silica were prepared by adsorption phase reaction technique (APRT) and impregnation method (IMP) under different water concentrations. Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis indicated that Ti concentration in samples prepared by both methods increased with the content of water rising. There was a sharp increase in Ti content curve of APRT samples, while Ti concentration of IMP samples changed slowly. The grain size of TiO2 by APRT was below 6 nm and TiO2 particles dispersed uniformly on surface of silica. But the size of TiO2 by IMP was larger than 20 nm and the number of large particles increased rapidly when water concentration increased. The photocatalysis activity of as-prepared catalysts was characterized by methyl-orange photodegradation. The results showed that APRT photocatalysts had higher photocatalysis activity than IMP photocatalysts. Ti concentration and TiO2 crystalline form were two factors which affected photocatalysis activity the most. The grain size of TiO2 had little influence on photocatalysis activity, which might be counteracted by the decrease of anastase TiO2.

Abstract:The effect of Lanthanum content, calcinating temperature and calcinating time on the photocatalytic activity of Lanthanum doping TiO2 was investigated. The study showed that samples treated under higher temperature and longer calcinating time exhibited higher photocatalytic activity. The X -ray diffraction pattern revealed that the lattice of those samples was highly expanded, It is suggested that the highly distorted crystal lattice may be involved in producing more ways by which the hole was captured. Thus, the photocatalytic activity of samples treated under higher temperature and longer time was promoted.

Abstract:The composite catalysts of TiO2/SiO2 were prepared though a sol-gel process followed by the calcination crystallization process. The inexpensive precursors, titanium sulfate and fly ash acid sludge, were used as providing titania and silica sources, respectively. The decomposition of fly ash acid sludge was digested with NaOH to extract silica, and the obtained sodium silicate was used to prepare TiO2/SiO2 composite. The effect of calcination temperature on the structure of TiO2/SiO2 composites was studied by means of XRD, BET, FTIR, SEM, photocatalysis and adsorption test. It was found that the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2/ SiO2 composite powders was significantly higher than that of pure TiO2. The presence of the Ti-O-Si bond was confirmed in the final products when the incorporation of titania into silica were performed. The photocatalytic performance of TiO2/SiO2 composite annealed at different temperatures was evaluated by Rhodamine B (RhB) as the target pollutant under visible-light irradiation. Results indicated that the sample exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity when the calcination temperature is up to 600 degrees C. After 4 h visible-light irradiation, about 90% of RhB was removed by this type of photocatalysts.

Abstract:Nano-TiO2/diatomite composite photocatalysts were prepared by hydrolysis-deposition method in the present study. The effect of calcination temperature on surface acidity and photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption/desorption, Fransmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, pyridine adsorption in situ fourier transform infrared and the adsorption and photodegradation of formaldehyde in air. Results revealed that the high temperature and the nucleation of titanium dioxide both can consume the surface Brönsted acid sites, and with the formation of Ti–O–Si bond to form surface Lewis acid. The composite calcined at 600 °C presents the highest decomposition of formaldehyde under UV irradiation at the room temperature.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide doped with phosphorus was synthesized by the sol-gel method with H-3 PO4 addition. The samples were calcined at different temperatures under different atmospheres, in order to affect the Ti-O combination behavior in P-doped TiO2. The physicochemical properties of the prepared samples were investigated using TG-DTA, XRD, FTIR, XPS, TEM and UV-vis. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The results show that P-doped TiO2 calcined in different thermal atmosphere reveals entirely different performances. The XRD and UV-vis analysis reveal that the effect of P species in TiO2 is increased by calcining in reducing atmosphere. Further photocatalytic experiments also display that P-doped TiO2 calcined under carbothermal reduction atmosphere (R-PT) exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than that calcined in air (A-PT). The XPS results confirms that the calcining atmosphere changes the distribution concentration of surface and interface species in P-doped TiO2, such as surface oxygen and Ti3+ sites, resulting in the improved photocatalytic activity and enhanced reutilization performance of R-PT. Further mechanism study illustrates that the promoting photocatalytic activity of P-doped TiO2 are ascribed to the formation of Ti3+ sites rather than exceeding oxygen on the surface. And the carbothermal process helps to reserve these Ti3+ sites during high temperature calcination, resulting in the increased photocatalytic activity of P-doped TiO2, especially when the doping level of P species is relative low. Abstract:TiO2-diatomite photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with various pre-modified diatomite. In order to obtain diatomite with different surface characteristics, two modification approaches including calcination and phosphoric acid treatment on the micro-structure of diatomite are introduced. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and micromorphology analysis. The results indicate that, compared with pure TiO2, the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2 loaded on diatomite carrier is significantly increased to nearly 900 degrees C, depending on the different pretreatment method of diatomite. The photocatalytic activities of different samples were evaluated by their degradation rate of methyl orange ( MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The samples prepared by phosphoric acid pretreatment method exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. After 90 min of UV irradiation, about 90% of MO is decomposed by the best effective photocatalyst. And after 8 h visible-light irradiation, nearly 60% of MO is decomposed by the same sample. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the H3PO4 pretreatment process can obviously change the surface features of diatomite carrier, cause the formation of Si-O-Ti bond, increase the binding strength between TiO2 and diatomite, restrain crystal growth of loaded TiO2, and thus form thermal-stable meso-porous structure at the granular spaces. It helps to build micro-, meso- and macro-porous hierarchical porous structure in TiO2-diatomite, and improves the charge and mass transfer efficiency during catalyzing process, resulting in the significantly increased photocatalytic activity of TiO2-diatomite pretreated by phosphoric acid. Abstract:Nanosized titanium dioxides were synthesized by hydrolysis of TiCl(4) followed by calcination at different temperatures ranging from 300 to 1,000 °C. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N(2) adsorption-desorption, and zeta potential analysis. The catalytic activities of the TiO(2) nanoparticles were tested by catalytic ozonation of trace 4-chloronitrobenzene (4-CNB) in water. Moreover, the catalytic ozonation activity of a sample calcined at 400 °C (denoted as T400) was tested in aqueous solution using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin trapping technique with 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) spin trap. It was found that with increasing calcination temperatures, the average crystallite size and average pore size increased, in contrast the BET surface areas decreased. However, the isoelectric point (IEP) first increased, and then decreased. The ozone adsorption on the catalyst surface played an important role in determining their catalytic activity. Sample T400 with the IEP of 7.0, farthest away from the 4-CNB solution pH value (pH = 5.3), showed the best catalytic activity. The EPR experiments further confirmed that the hydroxyl radicals TiO(2)-catalyzed ozonation followed a radical-type mechanism.

Abstract:TiO2 and core–shell SiO2@TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel process at different calcination temperatures. Mesoporous hollow TiO2 composites were prepared by etching SiO2 from SiO2@TiO2 nanoparticles with alkali solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM),Transmission electron microscope (TEM), and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, and Roman and Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were employed to characterize the synthesized materials. The effects of different calcination temperatures on the morphology, crystallinity, phase composition, and photocatalytic activity of the prepared materials were investigated in detail. It was found that the calcination temperature altered the phase structure, crystallinity, morphology, specific surface area, and porous structure. Additionally, it was verified that SiO2 could inhibit the transfer of TiO2 from anatase phase to rutile phase under high temperature calcination (850 °C). The hollow TiO2 calcined at 850 °C showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency of 97.5% for phenol degradation under UV irradiation.

A Facile Method of Preparing Sandwich Layered TiO2 in Between Montmorillonite Sheets and Its Enhanced UV-light Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:The ultrafine dispersing and subsequent self-assembling process of montmorillonite (MMt) micro layers were controlled by pH switch to build sandwich-layer structure of TiO2 intercalated MMt. Different pH controlling processes were carried out during hydrothermal synthesis, and the as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR, UV-vis spectra, nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis, and photocatalytic activities. The FTIR and XRD results reveal that TiO2 is chemically combined with MMt layers by hydrothermal process, which hinders the grain growth and anatase-to-rutile phase transition of loaded TiO2 and the transition temperature is approximately 900 degrees C. The micro-morphology analysis shows that TiO2 nanoparticles could be successfully intercalated into MMt layers by special pH controlling process, resulting in the expansion of interplanar spacing of MMt and increased interface action between TiO2 nanocrystals and MMt sheets. The size of TiO2 intercalated in the MMt is approximately 15 nm, which is much smaller than blank TiO2. Furthermore, comparing with ordinary surface loaded TiO2, the TiO2 nanoparticles sandwiched in MMt layers display much higher UV-light photocatalytic degradation activity and reliable recycling stability to methyl orange (MO), due to more Ti3+ active sites and larger porous volume caused by intercalation. Differed from previous TiO2-MMt, which has directional arrangement and narrowed interlayer spacing of (001) faces of MMt, such novel pH controlling process gives full play to the advantage of clay sheets to build layered limited TiO2, and solves traditional drawbacks of MMt supporting materials such as light barrier and limited mass transfer efficiency in composed photocatalysts. Abstract:The porous natural zeolites have been employed as the TiO_2 supports,and the photocatalytic process of TiO_2/zeolite on methyl orange(MO) has been studied.The interface mechanism between the TiO_2 and the natural zeolite has been discussed,and the change of the kinetic process before and after TiO_2 loading has been studied for the first time.The "super reaction area" model has been brought out for liquid system,in order to explain the photocatalytic process of the TiO_2/zeolite system.The AFM,IR and spectra analysis,a certain amount of TiO_2 combined with natural zeolite by Ti-O-Si or Ti-O-Al chemical bond.At the initial stage of photcatalytic degradation(PCD) of MO,the addition of nature zeolite supports have made the initial reaction change from original poor "adsorption controlled" process to the "reaction controlled" process.Since all of the reaction rates of TiO_2/zeolite are higher than the pure TiO_2 powder,it's obvious that the zeolite supports have enhanced the rate of the slower adsorption process resulting in the increase of the initial reaction rate R_0.The first-order reaction rate k_1 shows that no matter what kind of process controlled the PCD process at the initial stage the whole process of PCD must be an adsorption controlling process undoubtedly because of the proliferating of the medial product.

Abstract:The effects of calcination temperature on the textual characterization and the photoactivity of titanium dioxide/bentonite nanocomposite prepared by acid-catalyzed sol method were studied. All the prepared materials were found thermally stable up to 973 K. The d001 basal spacings of the composite catalyst decreased with the increase of calcination temperature. The photoactivity of the sample was larger in the order of 773 K heat treated > 973 K heat treated > 573 K heat treated. Results also indicated that the state and other characterization of TiO2 which was highly dispersed in the composite also played important roles in the photoactivity.
Effects of calcination temperature on physicochemical property and activity of CuSO4/TiO2 ammonia-selective catalytic reduction catalysts

Abstract:CuSO4/TiO2 catalysts with high catalytic activity and excellent resistant to SO2 and H2O, were thought to be promising catalysts used in Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by NH3. The performance of catalysts is largely affected by calcination temperature. Here, effects of calcination temperature on physicochemical property and catalytic activity of CuSO4/TiO2 catalysts were investigated in depth. Catalyst samples calcined at different temperatures were prepared first and then physicochemical properties of the catalyst were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectra, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of NH3, temperature-programmed reduction of H2 and in situ diffuse reﬂectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. Results revealed that high calcination temperature had three main effects on the catalyst. First, sintering and anatase transform into rutile with increase of calcination temperature, causing a decrement of specific surface area. Second, decomposition of CuSO4 under higher calcination temperature, resulting in disappears of Brønsted acid sites (S-OH), which had an adverse effect on surface acidity. Third, CuO from the decomposition of CuSO4 changed surface reducibility of the catalyst and favored the process of NH3 oxidation to nitrogen oxides (NOx). Thus, catalytic activity of the catalyst calcined under high temperatures (≥600°C) decreased largely.

Abstract:A sol–gel synthesizing method was applied to prepare thin porous titanium dioxide layer supported on the zeolite. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide can enhance the porosity of TiO2 layer and the activity. This work aims at the influences of calcination temperature on the characteristics of the TiO2/zeolite composites. The only substance in the supported layer of the TiO2/zeolite composites is anatase TiO2. The crystallite sizes of anatase titanium dioxide in the composites calcined at 350°C, 400°C, 450°C and 500°C are 8.8, 10.0, 11.8 and 12.3 nm, and the bandgap energies are 2.67, 3.08, 3.21 and 3.21 eV for the composites, respectively. The TiO2/zeolite composites are typical mesoporous materials, and the mesopores are formed in the TiO2 layer. The composite sample calcined at 400°C has the largest specific surface area (229.7 m2/g), which is close to that of the zeolite. Many mesopores are formed in the TiO2 layer of the TiO2/zeolite composite. The maximum number of hydroxyl radical is produced on the TiO2/zeolite composite calcined at 400°C, accompanied with the strongest photocatalytic activity. Acid Red 1 dye is almost thoroughly degraded after 90 min of reaction in the presence of the TiO2/zeolite composite.

Abstract:The TiO2 nanofibres with photocatalytic efficiency are prepared by sol-gel and electrospinning methods as well as calcined at different temperatures (350, 400 and 450 ℃, respectively) with Ti(OC4H9)4 and PVP as raw materials. The structures and morphologies of the TiO2 fibers are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, both FTIR and photocatalytic measurements on Rhodamine B solution are performed to investigate the effect of calcinate temperature on photocatalytic efficiency. Results show that the photocatalytic TiO2 fibres are obtained, and the TiO2 fibres calcined at 400 ℃ possess the optimal photocatalytic efficiency (photocatylytic rate reaches 56.92%) in all the prepared samples.

Abstract:Photoactive TiO2 was homogeneously mounted on PAN-based activated carbon cloths (ACCs) by a process of dip-coating and subsequent annealing in nitrogen atmosphere. The crystallinity of TiO2 and pore structure of hybrids was characterized by XRD and N2 adsorption. The adsorption and photocatalytic activity for TiO2-mounted ACC towards methylene blue (MB) solution was investigated. The results showed that the coating of TiO2 gel resulted in a marked decrease in specific surface area and pore volume from the pristine ACC, which was recovered gradually with increasing treatment temperature. Besides crystallinity of TiO2 can be modified by heat treatment, its pore structure can be postulated by adding different amount of polyethylene glycol (PEG). Both pore structure of hybrids and crystallinity of TiO2 as well as the carbon residue produced by PEG pyrolysis had effects on their adsorptive and photocatalytic performances of TiO2-mounted ACCs. It would be a promising technology to integrate adsorption and photocatalysis for TiO2-mounted ACCs.
Study on preparation of TiO_2 loaded on activated carbon and photocatalytic properties

Abstract:Titanium dioxide(TiO2) was loaded on activated carbon by a sol-gel method using tetrabutyl titanate(Ti(OC4H9) 4) as raw material. The catalyst samples were characterized by XRD. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2/AC was studied under the different preparation conditions( different TiO2 load, different calcining time, different calcining temperature) and after mutiple and repeated usage. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of TiO2/AC was the highest when the capacity up to 28.2%, calcining time was 4 h, calcining temperature was 400 ℃. The photodegration rate of methyl orange reached 98.09%. The results also showed that TiO2 / AC light catalyst still had a the high light catalytic performance after mutiple and repeated usage.
