Abstract:Oxygen adsorption and desorption of gasification products are two factors that influence graphite oxidation behavior. Whether the catalytic or inhibiting effect occurs after B and N doping still remains controversial. In this paper, the activation energies for the adsorption of oxygen and desorption of CO on a modified nuclear graphite surface, combining vacancy and dopants, are studied by density functional theory (DFT). Vacancy defected graphite is more sensitive to O2 adsorption because of the unpaired electron on the dangling carbon atom. However, substitution with B or N makes the adsorption more difficult, since substituting C by a B or N atom eliminates the effect of the unpaired electron, which means that these dopants can be applied to improve oxidation resistance of nuclear graphite or other carbon materials. Desorption calculation of adsorbed radical (C–O) indicates that substitutional B or N atoms in graphite facilitate CO desorption, in this respect B or N dopants play a role of catalyst for graphite oxidation. Introduction of dopants such as B, N results in weaker O2 adsorption capability on vacancy defected graphite while they help desorption of oxidation products such as CO. Both the inhibiting and catalytic effects of these dopants are an example of the compensation effect.

Abstract:Boron inserted as impurity by substitution of carbon atoms in graphite is known to change (improve or deteriorate) oxidation resistance of nuclear graphite, but the reason for both catalytic and inhibiting oxidation is still uncertain. As a first step, this work is more specially devoted to the adsorption and diffusion of oxygen atoms on the surface and related to the problem of oxygen retention on the pure and boron-containing graphite surfaces. Adsorption energies and energy barriers associated to the diffusion for molecular oxygen recombination are calculated in the density functional theory framework. The existence of boron modifies the electronic structure of the surface, which results in an increase of the adsorption energy for O. However, low boron loading makes it easier for the recombination into molecular oxygen. For high boron concentration, it induces a better O retention capability in graphite because the presence of B-B bonds decreases recombination of the adsorbed oxygen atoms. A possible explanation for both catalytic and inhibiting effects of boron in graphite is proposed. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
First Principles Study of Oxidation Behavior of Irradiated Graphite

Abstract:The relationship between nuclear graphite microstructure and its oxidation resistance underlines the importance of comprehensive oxidation characterization studies of the new grades of nuclear graphite. Periodic DFT calculations are performed to model oxidation behavior of irradiated graphite. O2 molecules adsorbed on perfect and defective graphite surfaces are calculated. The adsorptive energy of O2 on defective graphite adsorption site with one carbon atom missing is approximately 10 times as strong as that on a defect-free perfect graphite surface. Monovacancy and divacancy on graphite surface can easily chemisorb O2 molecule compared to perfect surface. Two oxidation processes including CO and CO2 formation steps are analyzed. For symmetric monovacancy defect, three dangling C atoms are unsaturated and exhibit high adsorption ability, as well as reconstructed monovacancy and divacancy defects. These vacancy defects in irradiated graphite decrease oxidation resistance of nuclear graphite.

Abstract:Boron doping has been widely investigated to improve oxidation resistance of graphite. In this work the interaction of boron with graphite is investigated by a van der Waals density-functional approach (vdW-DF). The traditional density-functional theory (DFT) is well accounted for the binding in boron substituted graphite. However, to investigate the boron atom on graphite surface and the interstitial impurities require use of a description of graphite interlayer binding. Traditional DFT cannot describe the vdW physics, for instance, GGA calculations show no relevant binding between graphite sheets. LDA shows some binding, but they fail to provide an accurate account of vdW forces. In this paper, we compare the calculation results of graphite lattice constant and cohesive energy by several functionals, it shows that vdW-DF such as two optimized functionals optB88-vdW and optB86b-vdW give much improved results than traditional DFT. The vdW-DF approach is then applied to study the interaction of boron with graphite. Boron adsorption, substitution, and intercalation are discussed in terms of structural parameters and electronic structures. When adsorbing on graphite surface, boron behaves as pi electron acceptor. The pi electron approaches boron atom because of more electropositive of boron than carbon. For substitution situation, the hole introduced by boron mainly concentrates on boron and the nearest three carbon atoms. The B-doped graphite system with the hole has less ability to offer electrons to oxygen, ultimately resulted in the inhibition of carbon oxidation. For interstitial doping, vdW-DFs show more accurate formation energy than LDA. PBE functional cannot describe the interstitial boron in graphite reasonably because of the ignoring binding of graphite sheets. The investigation of electron structures of boron doped graphite will play an important role in understanding the oxidation mechanism in further study. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
CO adsorption and oxidation on N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles

Abstract:In order to oxidize CO to CO2 during the process of steam pyrolysis nuclear graphite waste, the adsorption and oxidation of a CO molecule on undoped and N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles has been studied by first-principles calculations, including the adsorption energies, bond lengths, local density of states (LDOSs), and the charge density difference (CDD). In the adsorption process, two electrons transfer from CO to the particle resulting in the reduction of the Ti sites. CO2 and carbonate form during the adsorption process on the dangling oxygen atom. The CO over the undoped and N-doped nanoparticles forms CO2 by detaching the dangling oxygen atom. Less than 0.22 eV energy gained can drive the CO2 away to a distance greater than 3.01 angstrom. Therefore, the CO molecule can be oxidized to CO2 by TiO2 nanoparticle, and the physically adsorbed CO2 molecule can spontaneously dissociate at room temperature, apart from the energies released in the adsorption process. The adsorption energy for an undoped particle is -093 eV, while that for an N-doped particle is -2.47 eV or -2.52 eV. N-doped nanoparticles have stronger oxidation ability. The doped nitrogen site (N site) in N-doped nanoparticles is also a chemical adsorption site. N-doped anatase (101) surfaces have stronger adsorption ability than the undoped surface, but weaker than the N-doped anatase nanoparticles adsorption. The results show that the N-doped anatase particles can react with CO molecule more efficiently.
Interplay Between Oxidized Monovacancy and Nitrogen Doping in Graphene

Abstract:In most of the N-doped graphene (N-graphene) which attracts strong attention in the context of precious-metal free catalysts and nanoelectronics, the oxygen content is generally higher than or at least comparable to the nitrogen content. In order to understand the effect of oxygen-containing chemical groups (OmHn) on N doping in defective graphene sheets, we perform density functional theory calculations to study the interplay of oxidized monovacancy (MV) and the nitrogen doping, motivated by the fact that MV is more frequently observed and more chemically active than divacancy and Stone-Wales defect. We determine the phase diagrams of undoped and nitrogen-doped oxidized MVs as a function of temperature and partial pressure of O-2 and H-2 gases. The modification of the electronic structure of MV by oxidation and N doping is studied. Our results show that the ether group (-O- in plane) is a common component in stable configurations of oxidized MVs. Most of the stable configurations of oxidized MVs do not induce any carriers. The stabilization of pyridinic N, pyridinium-like N, and graphitic N at MV depends on the oxidation degree of MV. Our results also suggest that pyridinic N and pyridinium-like N at clean MV do not facilitate the oxygen-reduction reaction.
Tritium Storage and Release Mechanism in Nuclear Graphite Using First-Principles Combined Thermal Desorption Theory

Abstract:Nuclear graphite (NG) is widely applied in nuclear facilities, and its strong interaction with tritium is an essential factor for tritium transport behavior in various reactors and the treatment of radioactive NG waste. Given that NG is a polycrystalline and porous material, interactions between tritium and NG exist in various microstructures, including graphite edges, graphene basal planes, and amorphous structures. In this study, density functional theory which is integrated in Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP) was combined with thermal desorption theory to elucidate the underlying mechanism of hydrogen isotope storage corresponding to the experimentally observed desorption peaks in NG. The four desorption temperature peaks, ranging from low to high, were mainly attributed to hydrogen isotope desorption from the graphite basal plane surface, amorphous carbon surface, unsaturated armchair and zigzag edges, respectively. The interaction between hydrogen isotopes and carbon nanostructures provides deeper insights into the understanding of tritium enrichment on the NG surface, which is primarily attributed to the adsorption of tritium on graphite basal plane-like surfaces at relatively low temperatures. This study provides a practical method to bridge the gap between the atomic binding structure and desorption temperature peaks from a kinetic perspective, providing insights into temperature-dependent hydrogen desorption in typical carbon structures and deepening our understanding of tritium transport behaviors in advanced nuclear energy systems.
Experimental Study on the Oxidation Behavior and Microstructural Evolution of NG-CT-10 and NG-CT-20 Nuclear Graphite

Abstract:NG-CT-10 and NG-CT-20 are newly developed grades of nuclear-grade graphite from China. In this study,their oxidation behaviors were experimentally investigated using thermal gravimetric analysis. Microstructural evolution before and after oxidation was investigated using scanning electron microscope, mercury intrusion, and Raman spectroscopy. The apparent activation energy of NG-CT-10 nuclear graphite is 161.4 k J/mol in a reaction temperature range of 550–700 °C and that of NG-CT-20 is153.5 kJ/mol in a temperature range of 550–650 °C. The activation energy in the inner diffusion control regime is approximately half that in the kinetics control regime. At high temperatures, the binder phase is preferentially oxidized over the filler particles and small pores are generated in the binder. No new large or deep pores are generated on the graphite surfaces. Oxygen can diffuse along the boundaries of filler particles and through the binder phase, but cannot diffuse into the spaces between the nanocrystallites in the filler particles. Filler particles are oxidized starting at their outer surfaces, and the sizes of nanocrystallites do not decrease following oxidation.

Abstract:The oxidation behaviors of the nuclear graphite being developed were investigated using gas chromatograph at 873-1373K. The oxidation experiments were carried out with the gas flow rate of 0.2 L/min and the oxygen concentrations of 7, 10 and 20 mol%. The oxidation reaction began at 973K and was accelerated with the increase of temperature. At 1173-1273K, the oxidation was limited by oxygen supplied to graphite and the reaction rate held steady. From 1273 to 1373K, the oxidation rate increased obviously due to the significant reaction between CO2 and graphite. At the low temperature regime (973-1073 K), the apparent activation energies with the oxygen mole fractions of 7%, 10% and 20% were 298, 324 and 321 kJ/mol, respectively. Scanning electron microscope was applied to reveal the pore development of the graphite oxidized at different temperatures. The effect of CO combustion at temperature below 1173K was discussed based on the oxidation behaviors of the graphite being developed and IG-110. It was suggested that the ASTM D7542-15 standard should be adjusted to fit some popular graphite, such as graphite IG-110.

Abstract:Boron has been considered as an important promising candidate for oxidation protection in carbon materials. However, the experimental discovery of catalytic effect of boron in graphite makes the role of boron confusing. To better understand the role of boron in carbon materials such as graphite or graphene, we investigate the oxidation behavior of boron-doped stoichiometric and vacancy-defected graphene plane by density functional theory calculations. Boron is found to be a catalyst for oxidation in the stoichiometric surface, while it acts as an inhibitor in the vacancy-defected surface. The electronic properties are calculated to explain why boron behaves differently in different surfaces. We show that the role of boron is closely associated with the redistribution of s electrons. For instance, the introduction of boron in stoichiometric surface facilitates the delocalized s electrons transfer from the matrix to oxygen and the adsorption energy increases with the number of transferred s electrons; while the decrease in reactivity with boron substitution in the vacancy-defected surface is largely attributed to the transition of electrons from delocalized states to localized states, thus suppressing the activity of dangling C atoms. This work helps to provide a theoretical foundation for further investigation of oxidation-resistant carbon materials.

Abstract:Both experimental and theoretical studies of the magnetic properties of micrographite and nanographite indicate a crucial role of the partial oxidation of graphitic zigzag edges in ferromagnetism. In contrast to total and partial hydrogenation, the oxidation of half of the carbon atoms on the graphite edges transforms the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between graphite planes and over graphite ribbons to the ferromagnetic interaction. The stability of the ferromagnetism is discussed.

Abstract:In this study, the distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups on graphene with vacancies and topological defects was systematically investigated using advanced computational methods and the structure models for multi-defect graphene oxides (GOs) were proposed. All potential adsorption sites were considered through an automated structure generation program to identify energetically favorable structures. Unlike the pristine graphene surface where oxygen-containing functional groups always aggregate with each other, we observed a tendency for them to preferentially adsorb near defects. Furthermore, they may also be distributed on the same side or both sides of the defective graphene. These multi-defect GOs can exhibit either metallic or semiconducting properties. Notably, upon adsorbing the same oxygen-containing functional groups onto the surface of defective graphene, their electronic characteristics become homogeneous. The coexistence of vacancy/topological defects and oxygen-containing functional groups within the graphene lattice introduces intriguing mechanical anisotropic properties to graphene, including the uncommon negative Poisson's ratio. Additionally, these materials exhibit anisotropic optical behaviors, displaying heightened absorption within the infrared and visible regions compared to pristine graphene. Finally, it is found that Li atoms are adsorbed stably on the surfaces of multi-defect GOs via the formation of LinO/LimOH clusters. The research findings presented in this paper, encompassing the development of structural models for multi-defect GOs, could provide crucial insights into the properties and potential applications of graphene oxides.

Abstract:The gasification process of graphene has been studied extensively, but the kinetic behavior of its surface vacancies under CO 2 atmosphere is not clear enough. Correctly understanding its behavior can help people to better understand the evolution of carbon structure during gasification from a microscopic perspective. In this study, ReaxFF-MD was used to investigate the entire gasification process of the defective graphene in the CO 2 atmosphere, including the generation of some gases. When the vacancy existed, the stable structure of the surface would be destroyed, resulting in the formation of the 5-member ring and 7-member ring vacancies. Meanwhile, the carbon bond near these vacancies would extend or break, which was used to capture the O atom of CO 2 molecule and generate CO gas molecule. With the increase of the aperture of the vacancy, the number of active sites on the defective surface increased, which not only improved the CO 2 adsorption reaction rate but also promoted the expansion of the vacancy size. Our study will have important implications for clarifying the gasification process of CO 2 gas molecules on the carbon structure of vacancies of different sizes, deepening the understanding of the gasification mechanism from the atomic scale. By revealing the interaction mechanism between the defective graphene and CO 2 , it provides a theoretical basis for the industrial graphene application process.

Oxygen molecule dissociation on carbon nanostructures with different types of nitrogen doping

Abstract:Energy barrier of oxygen molecule dissociation on carbon nanotube or graphene with different types of nitrogen doping is investigated using density functional theory. The results show that the energy barriers can be reduced efficiently by all types of nitrogen doping in both carbon nanotubes and graphene. Graphite-like nitrogen and Stone-Wales defect nitrogen decrease the energy barrier more efficiently than pyridine-like nitrogen, and a dissociation barrier lower than 0.2 eV can be obtained. Higher nitrogen concentration reduces the energy barrier much more efficiently for graphite-like nitrogen. These observations are closely related to partial occupation of {\pi}* orbitals and change of work functions. Our results thus provide useful insights into the oxygen reduction reactions.

Abstract:Gas chromatography and numerical methods were used to investigate the oxidation behavior of SNG742 nuclear grade graphite at 500-1100 degrees C with different oxidizing gas flow rates. A four-step overall reaction mechanism was used to describe the graphite oxidation reaction process, which reasonably explains the peak of CO mole fraction at around 700 degrees C with lower flow rates. The kinetic parameters of apparent oxidation reaction and four-step reaction mechanism of SNG742 graphite were obtained through curve fitting of the measured data. The apparent activation energy of SNG742 nuclear graphite is 200.7 +/- 14.2 kJ/mol. The effects of temperature and gas velocity on the oxidation rate were analyzed. The graphite oxidation process was effectively simulated using CFD method with porous media model and the four-step reaction mechanism. The simulation results show that increasing the gas flow rate can reduce the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer and influence the diffusion control regime of graphite oxidation. The four-step overall reaction mechanism can better describe the graphite oxidation process than the one-step overall reaction. The porous medium model can effectively simulate the mass diffusion process and surface chemical reaction in the interior porous region of the graphite.
On the mechanism of gas adsorption for pristine, defective and functionalized graphene

Abstract:Defect is no longer deemed an adverse aspect of graphene. Contrarily, it can pave ways of extending applicability of graphene. Here, we discuss the effects of three types of defects on graphene: carbon deficiency, adatom (single Fe) dopant and introduction of functional groups (carboxyl, pyran group) on NO2 gas adsorption via density functional theory method. We have observed that the unsaturated carbon in defected graphene is highly active to attract NO2 molecules. Our study suggests that introducing Fe on graphene can enhance the NO2 adsorption process. Adsorption energy calculations suggest the enhancement in NO2 adsorption is more profound for Fe-doped mono and tetra vacant graphene than Fe doped bi- and tri-vacant graphene. This study could potentially be useful in developing adsorption-based applications of graphene.

Abstract:Nitrogen doping in graphene has important implications in graphene-based devices and catalysts. We have performed the density functional theory calculations to study the electronic structures of N-doped graphene with vacancies and Stone-Wales defect. Our results show that monovacancies in graphene act as hole dopants and that two substitutional N dopants are needed to compensate for the hole introduced by a monovacancy. On the other hand, divacancy does not produce any free carriers. Interestingly, a single N dopant at divacancy acts as an acceptor rather than a donor. The interference between native point defect and N dopant strongly modifies the role of N doping regarding the free carrier production in the bulk π bands. For some of the defects and N dopant-defect complexes, localized defect π states are partially occupied. Discussion on the possibility of spin polarization in such cases is given. We also present qualitative arguments on the electronic structures based on the local bond picture. We have analyzed the 1s-related x-ray photoemission and adsorption spectroscopy spectra of N dopants at vacancies and Stone-Wales defect in connection with the experimental ones. We also discuss characteristic scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images originating from the electronic and structural modifications by the N dopant-defect complexes. STM imaging for small negative bias voltage will provide important information about possible active sites for oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract:Herein, we have used density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the adsorption behavior of gas molecules on Co/N3 co–doped graphene (Co/N3–gra). We have investigated the geometric stability, electric properties, and magnetic properties comprehensively upon the interaction between Co/N3–gra and gas molecules. The binding energy of Co is −5.13 eV, which is big enough for application in gas adsorption. For the adsorption of C2H4, CO, NO2, and SO2 on Co/N–gra, the molecules may act as donors or acceptors of electrons, which can lead to charge transfer (range from 0.38 to 0.7 e) and eventually change the conductivity of Co/N–gra. The CO adsorbed Co/N3–gra complex exhibits a semiconductor property and the NO2/SO2 adsorption can regulate the magnetic properties of Co/N3–gra. Moreover, the Co/N3–gra system can be applied as a gas sensor of CO and SO2 with high stability. Thus, we assume that our results can pave the way for the further study of gas sensor and spintronic devices.

Abstract:The geometries, adsorption energies, and electronic structures of Cs, Sr, and Ag atoms on matrix graphite surface with point defects were calculated and analyzed using the density functional theory (DFT) and the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) formulation of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Three different types of point defects, i.e., single vacancy and "bridge" and "spiro" interstitials are considered using approximate van der Waals (vdW) correction methods. The results of adsorption energies show that the metal fission products of Cs, Sr, and Ag are more stable on single vacancy defects than "bridge" or "spiro" interstitial defects. This is further confirmed by the analysis of electronic structures, such as charge density difference (CDD) and density of state (DOS). All these results indicate that dangling bonds play an important role in the adsorption behaviors of metallic fission products on matrix graphite.
