Abstract:To obtain the shallow 3-D S-wave velocity structure of Xiamen Island, we calculated the noise cross-correlation function of the vertical components of continuous ambient noise waveforms, observed by a temporary 50 -station seismic array on Xiamen Island in 2019. Then, we extracted the Rayleigh wave phase velocity dispersion curves by the frequency-Bessel transform (F-J) method, inverted the 1-D S-wave velocity structures under the subarrays, and finally obtained the 3-D S-wave velocity model of 0 similar to 4 km depth for this region by interpolation. The results show that the S-wave velocity of Xiamen Island increases with depth, and the lateral inhomogeneity is obvious near the surface. The S-wave velocity at 0 similar to 1 km depth is mainly "high in the north and low in the south", which coincides well with lithology distribution. As the depth increases, the horizontal distribution of S-wave velocity gradually becomes a strip with good continuity and nearnortheastward spreading. According to previous studies, we inferred that this phenomenon is related to folds and faults formed by compressions and extensions during different periods, and implies multiple tectonic movements and magmatic intrusions in Xiamen Island. The obvious velocity difference in the vertical section corresponds to the location of the fault zone in the study area. The results can provide a scientific basis for the study of tectonic evolution and the assessment of geological hazards in Xiamen Island.

Abstract:Using the broad-band seismic data of Peking University and CENC,taking the method of two plane waves tomography,we have obtain the phase velocities of Rayleigh wave and the 3D shear velocities in Ordos region.Through analyzing the results,we have found the phase velocities of Rayleigh wave in Shanxi graben and Weihe graben are lower.High velocity anomaly beneath moho has been observed in Ordos block,indicate that Ordos block is a stable craton,and its effect extend to 120km depth at least;in the depth between 70 and 120km of Shanxi graben and Weihe graben,shear velocities were lower than origin model,indicating that the substance there had plasticity and these region are strong activity,which is consistent with the activity of earthquake.

Abstract:A seismic experiment provides new insights on the crustal structure of the head area of the Three Gorges Reservoir in central China. The region is characterized by a relatively high rate of reservoir-induced seismicity that is often triggered within those areas associated with the ascending water level. Our 3-D velocity model of the Three Gorges region shows that the Huangling anticline (HLA) is characterized by a high-velocity crust, and the Zigui Basin (ZGB) has lower crustal velocities. The 3-D tomographic inversions are conducted using 11 901 P -wave and 12 032 S -wave arrival times from 1342 events recorded by the local network of seismic stations from early 2001 to late 2006. Initial models with varying velocity gradients are extracted to constrain a data-driven optimum 1-D model for 3-D iterative inversion scheme. Checkerboard tests are applied to assess model reliability, indicating a reasonable level of lateral and vertical resolutions. The P - and S -tomographic models reveal a local high-velocity anomaly from 5 to 10 km beneath SW portion of the HLA and a strong, large low-velocity anomaly between about 5–10 km depths at the south margin of the ZGB. Moreover, the southwest border of HLA underthrust the ZGB with slightly bigger angle. Also, a prominent high-velocity anomaly is located below 5 km beneath Shazhenxi, and to the west, the velocity anomaly turns out to be negative. There is no record help explaining the dramatic feature since incorporating local tectonic and topography, it suggests sharp gap in velocity near surface is primarily due to several secondary fracture zones. The surface responses of velocity discontinuity are generally aligned parallel to the trending of fault. Relatively good agreement between regional features and the velocity perturbations promotes further interpretation. Earthquake swarm activities from source relocation occur on the outer portions of high-velocity anomaly with nearly perpendicular dip angle. Thus, the seismicity pattern could be interpreted based on the velocity models, regional geostress and dynamic load of reservoir.
3D Seismic Attributes for Structural Analysis in Compressional Context: A Case Study from Western Sichuan Basin

Abstract:Compressional region usually forms complex thrust faults system, which is difficult to identify using traditional migration profiles. The successful application of three-dimensional（3D） seismic attributes analysis greatly reduces the difficulty, and improves the accuracy and efficiency of seismic interpretation and structural analysis. In this paper, we took Qiongxi area in the compressional region of western Sichuan as an example, using two 3D seismic attributes, coherence and instantaneous phase, to identify fault assemblages and variations both vertically and laterally. The results show that the study area mainly consists of NS-, NE- and NEE-trending faults. The NS-trending faults are the largest and have a component of sinistral slip controlling the formation of NEE-trending faults, while the NE-trending faults are intermediate in scale, formed earlier and were cut by the NS-trending faults. Our results demonstrate that using seismic attributes for structural analysis have the following advantages:（1） more details of major fault zones,（2） highlighting minor faults which are hardly traced in seismic migration cube, and（3） easier acquisition of accurate fault systems. The application of seismic attributes provides a new idea for deciphering fine and complicated structures, and will significantly contribute to the development of objective and precise geological interpretation in the future.
On the Effect of 3D Wave Propagation on 2D Regional‐Scale Velocity Model Building

Abstract:Abstract Active seismic surveys are routinely employed by academia to study geological structure of the crust and upper mantle. Wavefields generated during these surveys are sampled at the receiver locations, but the wave‐paths traveled from a source to a sensor remains unknown. Although seismic acquisition layouts designed to investigate complex crustal‐scale environments are often two‐dimensional, the seismogram recorded at the receiver location represents information gathered along the three‐dimensional wavepaths that might offset from the 2D source/receiver profile along its transverse direction. This so‐called 3D‐effect distorts the results of 2D seismic imaging, which is unable to handle the out‐of‐plane propagation. Despite the numerous 2D seismic imaging case studies, the assessment of this issue is often overlooked. However, the problem exists ‐ especially for crustal‐scale profiles, where seismic energy propagates over distances of hundreds of kilometers and probes different crustal units. In this work we investigate the impact of 3D‐effect on the results of 2D velocity model building from the academic ocean‐bottom seismometer data. We show with polarization analysis how the 3D‐effect can manifest itself in the data domain. Using various scenarios of acquisition we evaluate the imprint of the out‐of‐plane propagation on the data and the results of full‐waveform inversion. We show that 2D velocity model building from the seismic profiles acquired in the complex geological setting can lead to wrong solution. Looking for the remedy to this issue we couple different configurations of acquisition geometries with 3D full‐waveform inversion that allow to handle the 3D effect and provide correct model reconstruction.

Abstract:The Song Ma fault zone, located in northern Vietnam, plays a crucial role in understanding the mechanism and evolution of the collision zone between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. To investigate these mechanism and their evolution, we deployed a temporary broadband seismograph network surrounding the Song Ma fault to examine the body wave tomography and ultimately obtained the velocity structure. The results suggest that the variation in the velocity structure beneath the fault zone is due to the local geological structures and that earthquake clusters are situated between the Song Ma fault and the Son La fault in northern Vietnam. Our research findings demonstrate the transformation of the region from a collision zone to a strike-slip fault zone in terms of the velocity structure. This reflects the geological and geophysical evolution of the Song Ma area. This study is crucial for comprehending the active mechanism of the main shear zone in northern Vietnam and the crustal structure in the surrounding area.

Abstract:In seismic exploration, particularly within the domain of oil and gas reservoirs, the accurate imaging of complex fault blocks and the identification of structural traps are important. Geological risk factors, including the implementation of structural traps, reservoir delineation, and precise target drilling, require immediate attention in practical exploration. Addressing these factors involves two primary challenges: ensuring imaging accuracy and minimizing structural distortions. This study introduces a high‐resolution velocity modelling technique with fault control, specifically developed to mitigate misties between seismic image and well‐log data and improve the accuracy of seismic depth imaging and well depth correlation. The method offers a targeted solution to the challenges of implementing structural traps, delineating reservoirs and executing precise drilling operations. By incorporating fault control, it accounts for the structural complexity of subsurface media, enabling an accurate inversion of velocity variations across fault blocks. This approach ensures that velocity models, constrained by geological and structural models, exhibit a high degree of consistency. Utilizing fault‐controlled travel time inversion, the method resolves mistier between seismic imaging and well‐log data, guaranteeing the precision of velocity models and imaging. The methodology provides reliable seismic data for target evaluation, effectively reducing exploration risks and improving the accuracy of velocity modelling.

Local earthquake tomography of the Aegean crust: Implications for active deformation, large earthquakes, and arc volcanism

Abstract:Three-dimensional velocity models can enable accurate earthquake location, improved seismic hazard assessment, and can enhance our understanding of geodynamic processes. This is particularly true for areas such as the Aegean, where the crust is marked by active volcanoes as well as shear and rift zones, all of which make this region highly heterogeneous. This work describes the application of local earthquake tomography in order to elucidate the crustal structure of the Aegean. We utilized a dataset of 2,135,625 P arrivals and 1,095,515 S arrivals from 178,676 events recorded across 324 stations. Results indicate that the boundary separating the slow V p from the fast anomalies at 20–40 km depth is well correlated with the Aegean Moho obtained from receiver functions. A slow V p (−5%) zone at depths >30 km along the Hellenic arc is likely associated with basal underplating that forms the base of the crust. On the other hand, fast V p and moderate to high V p /V s (1.77–1.92) in the upper-middle crust may indicate evolving metamorphic core complexes. Steeply dipping clusters of earthquakes could highlight pathways of fluid migration from the base to the middle/upper crust, albeit more detailed seismological studies are needed to confirm this interpretation. The 3D velocity model can be also utilized in order to investigate the amount of melt fraction beneath active volcanoes and the influence of fluids on the rupture zone of large earthquakes. Our results show a melt fraction between 4 and 10% beneath active volcanoes, with the largest volume of melt present beneath Santorini caldera. The ruptures zones of 10 large earthquakes (M w ≥ 6.0), show slow V p anomalies and moderate to high V p /V s (> 1.77), suggesting that these events were likely triggered by weakening of their source zones by fluid activity.

Abstract:Since the collision of Indian subcontinent to Eurasia, a huge quantity of crustal materials from India has been penetrated into the crust or mantle of Eurasia. Investigation of the place, on which those materials have been deposited is a key problem for constructing a model of collision between continents. The results of three-dimensional seismic velocity structure obtained from seismic tomography technique may provide an evidence of the deposit of anomalous materials in the crust and upper mantle of the Tibetan Plateau and its neighboring areas. A detailed analysis of the results from the seismic surface wave tomography has deduced a new model of the continental collision from India to Eurasia. It is compatible to the velocity data obtained from other geological and geophysical observations.

Seismic Evidence for Ultralow‐velocity Zones Beneath Africa and Eastern Atlantic

Abstract:SKS waveforms recorded at distances of about 110° are extremely useful to constrain seismic velocity structure at the base of the mantle. SKS waves near this distance develop a complicated interference pattern with the phases SPdKS and SKPdS. We report anomalous behavior of this interference in a number of recordings of deep earthquakes beneath South America from stations in Europe and Africa. We model these data with two‐dimensional dome‐like structures at the base of the mantle which extend laterally by a few hundred kilometers and in which the shear velocity is up to 30% lower than in the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM). The spatial extent of these structures, their position with respect to the SKS core exit points, and their seismic characteristics can not be uniquely determined. However, the presence of a dipping or a concaved upper interface is a key attribute of successful models. Models that invoke flat layers are insufficiently complex to explain the most erratic waveform behavior. The most anomalous data correspond to sampling regions at the base of the mantle beneath the East African Rift and beneath the Iceland, where possibly, whole mantle upwellings form.
Dynamic rupture modeling in a complex fault zone with distributed and localized damage

Abstract:Active fault zones have complex structural and geometric features that are expected to affect earthquake nucleation, rupture propagation with shear and volumetric deformation, and arrest. Earthquakes, in turn, dynamically activate co-seismic off-fault damage that may be both distributed and localized, affecting fault zone geometry and rheology, and further influencing post-seismic deformation and subsequent earthquake sequences. Understanding this co-evolution of fault zones and earthquakes is a fundamental challenge in computational rupture dynamics with consequential implications for earthquake physics, seismic hazard and risk. Here, we implement a continuum damage breakage (CDB) rheology model in our MOOSE-FARMS dynamic rupture simulator to investigate the interplay between bulk damage and fault motion on the evolution of dynamic rupture, energy partitioning, and ground motion characteristics. We demonstrate several effects of damage (accounting for distributed cracking) and breakage (accounting for granulation) on rupture dynamics in the context of two prototype problems addressed currently in the 2D plane-strain setting: (1) a single planar fault and (2) a fracture network. We quantify the spatio-temporal reduction in wave speeds associated with dynamic ruptures in each of these cases and track the evolution of the original fault zone geometry. The results highlight the growth and coalescence of localization bands as well as competition between localized slip on the pre-existing faults vs. inelastic deformation in the bulk. We analyze the differences between off-fault dissipation through damage-breakage vs. plasticity and show that damage-induced softening increases the slip and slip rate, suggesting enhanced energy radiation and reduced energy dissipation. These results have important implications for long-standing problems in earthquake and fault physics as well as near-fault seismic hazard, and they motivate continuing towards 3D simulations and detailed near-fault observations to uncover the processes occurring in earthquake rupture zones.

Structural Characterization of the Taltal Segment in Northern Chile Between 22°S and 26°S Using Local Earthquake Tomography

Abstract:Recordings of earthquakes by a temporary deployment of 84 short period seismometers in northern Chile were used to derive regional 3D seismic velocity models for the Taltal segment. We used the Regressive ESTimator (REST) package for event detection and automatic onset estimation of P‐ and S‐wave arrival times to create an earthquake catalog with 23,985 hypocenters. We followed standard acceptability criteria (i.e., azimuthal gap and residual cutoff) to create a high‐quality data set and inverted for 3D Vp, Vs and Vp/Vs models using local earthquake tomography. Plots of hypocenters from the catalog, comprising 16,349 earthquakes, reveal active structures in the upper crust, dip changes along the slab and fracturing within the oceanic crust. Moreover, the wavespeed models illuminate anomalies in both the Nazca and South American plates that correlate with the observed seismicity distribution, including variations from low (1.75) to high (>1.80) Vp/Vs near the Atacama fault system on the coastline and the Domeyko Fault System in the forearc. The seismic velocity models also provide evidence for fluid circulation caused by the subducting Taltal ridge on the coast and partial melting feeding a volcanic complex close to the Andes. Finally, the observed low Vp/Vs ratios (∼1.75) are associated with copper mining operations in the area, suggesting that this kind of imaging can be used to characterize the distribution of potential ore deposits in the area.

Intermittent Granular Dynamics at a Seismogenic Plate Boundary

Abstract:Earthquakes at seismogenic plate boundaries are a response to the differential motions of tectonic blocks embedded within a geometrically complex network of branching and coalescing faults. Elastic strain is accumulated at a slow strain rate of the order of $10^{-15}$ s$^{-1}$, and released intermittently at intervals $>100$ years, in the form of rapid (seconds to minutes) coseismic ruptures. The development of macroscopic models of quasi-static planar tectonic dynamics at these plate boundaries has remained challenging due to uncertainty with regard to the spatial and kinematic complexity of fault system behaviors. In particular, the characteristic length scale of kinematically distinct tectonic structures is poorly constrained. Here we analyze fluctuations in GPS recordings of interseismic velocities from the southern California plate boundary, identifying heavy-tailed scaling behavior. This suggests that the plate boundary can be understood as a densely packed granular medium near the jamming transition, with a characteristic length scale of $91 \pm 20$ km. In this picture fault and block systems may rapidly rearrange the distribution of forces within them, driving a mixture of transient and intermittent fault slip behaviors over tectonic time scales.

The main objectives of this project are to construct hierarchical, multi-grid (resolution) joint P and S velocity models and the corresponding finite-difference strain Green s tensors (FDSGT) for rapid seismic moment determination. Up to 21 years continuous seismic data from broadband seismic stations in the eastern hemisphere (latitude 55S-55N; longitude 30W-157E) have been collected and processed. Empirical Green 's functions derived from ambient seismic noise show clear Rayleigh waves over a broad frequency range. Over 10,000 phase delays in 6 period bands ranging from 50 s to 600 s measured, which provide new constraints on the entire upper mantle, including the upper mantle transition zone. Several iterations of full-wave tomographic inversion have been carried out to obtain a joint P and S velocity model. Preliminary results clearly show high-velocity anomalies associated with plate subduction beneath Indonesia, southern Tibet, Iran, and the Hellenic arc. The African cratons and the west Australian craton appear as prominent high-velocity features. The eastern African Rift and Afar have deep-rooted low-velocity anomalies. Future work includes integration of earthquake arrivals and ambient noise data.
Imaging the crustal and upper mantle structure of the North Anatolian Fault: A Transmission Matrix Framework for Local Adaptive Focusing

Abstract:Imaging the structure of major fault zones is essential for our understanding of crustal deformations and their implications on seismic hazards. Investigating such complex regions presents several issues, including the variation of seismic velocity due to the diversity of geological units and the cumulative damage caused by earthquakes. Conventional migration techniques are in general strongly sensitive to the available velocity model. Here we apply a passive matrix imaging approach which is robust to the mismatch between this model and the real seismic velocity distribution. This method relies on the cross-correlation of ambient noise recorded by a geophone array. The resulting set of impulse responses form a reflection matrix that contains all the information about the subsurface. In particular, the reflected body waves can be leveraged to: (i) determine the transmission matrix between the Earth's surface and any point in the subsurface; (ii) build a confocal image of the subsurface reflectivity with a transverse resolution only limited by diffraction. As a study case, we consider seismic noise (0.1-0.5 Hz) recorded by the Dense Array for Northern Anatolia (DANA) that consists of 73 stations deployed for 18 months in the region of the 1999 Izmit earthquake. Passive matrix imaging reveals the scattering structure of the crust and upper mantle around the NAFZ over a depth range of 60 km. The results show that most of the scattering is associated with the Northern branch that passes throughout the crust and penetrates into the upper mantle.

Seismic Tomography Of 3d Velocity Structure On The Central South Crust Of The North China Block

Abstract:The North China Fault-block is located in the north of Henan (113 degrees E- 116 degrees E, 35 degrees N-37N degrees), which is an important earthquakes active object. There are three different geological elements in the region. Since the faults almost entirely control the geological structure motion of the block, they are surely closely related to the earthquake activities as well. Now, there are more earthquakes occurring in the area. Therefore, it will be meaningful to use seismic tomography to study the distribution of velocity structure of the crust in the area and to explore the earthquake activity in the future. In the study, no less than 7000 travel time records of P-wave and S-wave of 293 local earthquakes were selected from 22 earthquake-stations in this area. The crust 3D velocity structure and earthquake activity features were studied on the basis of the data. Three discontinuities (15km, 27km, 34km) were considered in the initial model base on the former study outcomes. During selecting the mesh scale, the principle which was assured to discern some depth clearly meanwhile as to promote resolution of discern as possible was complied with. Whereas above, we divided the study area into blocks with an equality grid scale 5.56kmx5.56kmx3.00km. According to the feature of the geological structure and earthquake's distribution of the area, we sliced the studied region along such as the 35 degrees N, 35.7 degrees N, 36.0 degrees N, 36.4 degrees N and 113.9 degrees E, 115.4 degrees E lines and make the slice pass through the earthquake belts and the merge of faults as more as possible. The conclusions we got from the study are the following. (a) We find that earthquake tends to occur in higher velocity zone in this area. (b) The mid crust (the depth from 20km to 26km) is more uniform and velocity-changing area is smaller. (c) There is a larger obvious high velocity zone in the area (114.5 degrees E-115.0 degrees E, 35.6 degrees N-35.8 degrees N, in the south-center of the study area) and it extends to the depth of 12km. But at the depth of about 30km the area is changing gradually into lower velocity. And there is few earthquakes occurred in here before. So, whereas above, we advice that should focus on earthquakes activity of the area in future.

Abstract:The Trans‐Alboran Shear Zone is one of the most seismically active areas in the westernmost Mediterranean, where a wide variety of tectonic domains have developed within the context of oblique convergence between Eurasia and Africa plates. In this region, earthquakes occur close to seismogenic structures, some of them large enough to cause damaging events. In addition, the diversity of tectonic domains implies a lateral variation of seismic wave propagation, which could affect the hypocenter reliability if not addressed during the location procedure. We present mTAB3D, a new 3D P‐wave velocity created after data collection, geometry modeling and velocity estimation in our study area. To test this model, we used arrival times from the Spanish Seismic Network catalog and performed two non‐linear absolute hypocenter inversions: the first comprises all the seismicity detected during 2018–2022 in the Eastern Betics Shear Zone; the second one consists of the earthquakes recorded during the Al‐Hoceima seismic sequence (2016). We compare our results against hypocenters computed with a 1D velocity model of the region (mIGN1D) and observe that mTAB3D achieves better clustering near active structures and lower epicentral uncertainties (up to 11% lower). Moreover, hypocenters obtained with mTAB3D show notable reliability even in scenarios of a low azimuthal gap, such as the 2016 Al‐Hoceima sequence. The new catalogs computed with our model help us to infer possible genetic relations between seismicity and source faults within our study area and can be used as an additional tool when looking into prior seismic sequences.
