Abstract:The solid behavior in a turbulent fluidized bed was studied by combination of experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Solid fractions were measured by optical fiber probe under three different superficial gas velocities and three different static bed heights at different axial levels. The experimental results showed that the lateral distribution of solid fraction is core-annulus and the operating conditions can influence the shape of the axial bed void profiles. In the CFD simulations, an Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model that incorporates the kinetic theory of granular flow was used to describe the gas–solid two-phase flow in a turbulent fluidized bed. A modified drag model was proposed using a scaling factor to reduce the universal drag laws, which accounts for the effect of particle clustering. The drag model can predict the coexisting regions, the bottom dense, bubbling region and the dilute, dispersed flow region observed in experiments. No significant difference was observed between results after application of laminar and turbulence model. The simulated axial bed void and radial solid fraction fit well with experimental data. The transient local solid fraction and the particle velocity were also investigated.
Study on a Semi-Resolved CFD-DEM Method for Rod-Like Particles in a Gas-Solid Fluidized Bed

Abstract:Based on a semi-resolved CFD-DEM coupling method, this study proposed a method that uses the minimum distance between the fluid grid and the particle boundary as a reference value to determine the degree of influence of the target fluid grid on the particle's drag force. A fluidized bed of rod-like particles was chosen as a typical case to investigate the effect of different fluid grid scales on various fluidized bed characteristic parameters. The calculation performance of the semi-resolved and unresolved CFD-DEM coupling algorithm on key fluidized bed characteristic parameters such as average pressure drop, particle frequency distribution with bed height, and particle orientation distribution were compared. It was found that the semi-resolved CFD-DEM coupling algorithm gradually obtained results with higher consistency with decreasing fluid grid scale for key parameters such as particle frequency distribution with bed height, particle orientation distribution, and time-history mixing index, exhibiting a phenomenon similar to grid independence in fluid simulation. By comparing with experimental results, it was verified that the semi-resolved CFD-DEM coupling algorithm can be applied to simulate multi-granular gas-solid systems with fluid grid scales equivalent to particle scales. This algorithm solves the limitation of fluid grid scale in the unresolved CFD-DEM coupling framework and improves the grid adaptability of the CFD-DEM coupling simulation algorithm.

Abstract:Particle and bubble motion plays an important role in determining the hydrodynamic characteristics of a fluidized system. The dynamic parameters of a fluidized bed are reflection of the complex correlation between particle–particle and particle–bubble in a system. A two-dimensional Eulerian–Eulerian model integrating the kinetic theory of granular flow is used to simulate the bubble and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) particle dynamic behavior in a gas–solid fluidized bed. The simulated method is validated by pressure fluctuation experiment. The computed vertical turbulent energy spectrum of particles is applied to identify the particle motion intensity and the inhomogeneity of turbulent energy dissipation. The energy spectrum captures the Levy–Kolmogorov law in inertial range at high frequency. Furthermore, the flatness factors of wavelet decomposition coefficients of particle fluctuation velocity are for the first time introduced to analyze the intermittence caused by coherent structures in the flow field. The results show that the intermittence in dissipation range is much stronger than that in energy-containing and inertial range, and reinforces rapidly as the radial distance and the bed height increase. Moreover, the acoustic emission (AE) energy is found to be able to indicate the flow regimes. By combing granular temperature and AE energy, the relationship between the spatial distribution of granular temperature and the flow regimes is established. To get more detail of bubble motion behavior, the power spectrum of voidage fluctuation is analyzed. This work provides valuable insights into the dynamic characteristics and the flow field information of a gas–solid fluidized bed by CFD simulation.

Abstract:In this study, the open-source software MFIX-DEM simulations of a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) are applied to assess nine drag models according to experimental and direct numerical simulation (DNS) results. The influence of superficial gas velocity on gas–solid flow is also examined. The results show that according to the distribution of time-averaged particle axial velocity in y direction, except for Wen–Yu and Tenneti–Garg–Subramaniam (TGS), other drag models are consistent with the experimental and DNS results. For the TGS drag model, the layer-by-layer movement of particles is observed, which indicates the particle velocity is not correctly predicted. The time domain and frequency domain analysis results of pressure drop of each drag model are similar. It is recommended to use the drag model derived from DNS or fine grid computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD-DEM) data first for CFD-DEM simulations. For the investigated BFB, the superficial gas velocity less than 0.9 m·s –1 should be adopted to obtain normal hydrodynamics. Abstract:Unsuccessful prediction of particle elutriation in fluidized beds is in part due to the negligence of electrostatic effects. In addition, lack of properly designed experiments makes it difficult to quantify the effects of electrostatics on particle elutriation. In this work, the CFD-DEM modeling approach has been used for the first time to investigate particle elutriation in a 2D fluidized bed taking into account electrostatic effects. Model predictions show that electrostatic charges on particles suppress particle elutriation and even eliminate elutriation completely at relatively higher charge levels. The study further shows that electrostatic effects result in the increase of the fluidized bed height and axial velocity of small particles in the free board which ultimately promotes particle elutriation. However, the presence of agglomerates caused by electrostatic attractions is dominant, thus the decrease in the concentration of small particles in the free board suppresses particle elutriation.

Abstract:When the liquid is injected into a gas-solid fluidized bed, particles are easily wetted and prone to form liquid bridges among them, further leading to particle agglomeration. Wet particle agglomeration induced by liquid bridge is dynamic and unstable, and its evolution behavior affects the stable operation of fluidized bed reactor. Therefore, based on the formation-fragmentation competition mechanism, a wet agglomeration evolution model is proposed to predict the evolution characteristics of wet agglomerates under different conditions. Furthermore, a modified drag force model which attributed the effect of wet agglomerates into the drag force was established and applied to the CFD simulation of a fluidized bed with wet agglomerates under the liquid spray-evaporation equilibrium state. Meanwhile, the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technology is applied in this work, and it was found that the vertical solid velocity simulated by CFD is in good agreement with the PIV measurement results.

Abstract:Both experimental and computational studies of the fluidization of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) particles in a small-scale full-loop circulating fluidized bed (CFB) are conducted. Experimental measurements of pressure drop are taken at various locations along the bed. The solids circulation rate is measured with an advanced particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. Bed height of the quasi-static region in the standpipe is also measured. Comparative numerical simulations are performed with a computational fluid dynamics solver utilizing a discrete element method (CFD-DEM). This paper examines the effect of different drag laws used in the CFD simulations through a detailed and direct comparison with experimental data from a small-scale, full-loop circulating fluidized bed. The Hill–Koch–Ladd drag correlation was shown to have good agreement with respect to system component pressure drop and inventory height in the standpipe.

Abstract:The computational fluid dynamic combining the discrete element method (CFD-DEM) is widely used to comprehend the mechanism of gas-solid flow. However, as a Lagrangian method, DEM suffers from the huge cost for tracking each particle in the systems when applied to industrial applications with billions of fine particles, regardless of the great advances in computing capacity of computers. To address this issue, a coarse-grain (CG) model is proposed in this paper, where the original fine particles are represented by a small number of large-sized CG particles. In the current study, the new-developed CG model combining CFD-DEM (CG CFD-DEM) is applied to investigate the fluidized bed with an immersed tube. The applicability and accuracy of the proposed CG CFD-DEM are validated by the good agreement of the macroscopic behaviors predicted by simulations and those obtained from experiments. For the first time, the CG CFD-DEM is used to predict the erosion around the tube based on the shear impact energy model (SIEM), and the computational results calculated by CG CFD-DEM and original CFD-DEM agree well, which demonstrates that the proposed model can predict the erosion of the tube in the fluidized bed accurately and efficiently. Besides, as expected, the calculation time is drastically reduced due to the CG model, which makes the simulations of large-scale industrial applications accessible. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:For the first time the bubble-based EMMS drag model developed for a mono-disperse system has been extended to simulate a bi-disperse fluidized bed in conjunction with the multi-fluid model. Simulations with the EMMS drag model reveal that the system attains a fluidized state earlier. Furthermore the model predicts bed height and voidage in better agreement with data from the literature. Inclusion of the sub-grid drag correction is found to have a significant effect on the predicted axial pressure drop profile, mixing and segregation behavior, granular temperatures and turbulent kinetic energy. The effect of the specularity coefficient on the mixing index is also investigated.

Abstract:Drag force is essential to dense flows, but the accurate and robust drag model is still an open issue. Direct numerical simulations of a shallow and a deep bubbling bed of moving rigid spheres have been carried out in the present work by using an immersed boundary method, and big data are produced. It turns out that the drag force in fluidized beds is typically underestimated by traditional drag models which depend only on the particle Reynolds number and the void fraction. With two additional parameters representing the velocity fluctuation and position fluctuation of particles introduced, a novel drag model based on the artificial neural network is developed, and a simplified version is also formulated. The drag force predicted by both models agrees excellently with the DNS data and is much more accurate than that predicted by existing models.

Abstract:A discrete element method (DEM)-computational fluid dynamics (CFD) two-way coupling method was employed to simulate the hydrodynamics in a two-dimensional spouted bed with draft plates. The motion of particles was modeled by the DEM and the gas flow was modeled by the Navier-Stokes equation. The interactions between gas and particles were considered using a twoway coupling method. The motion of particles in the spouted bed with complex geometry was solved by combining DEM and boundary element method (BEM). The minimal spouted velocity was obtained by the BEMDEM-CFD simulation and the variation of the flow pattern in the bed with different superficial gas velocity was studied. The relationship between the pressure drop of the spouted bed and the superficial gas velocity was achieved from the simulations. The radial profile of the averaged vertical velocities of particles and the profile of the averaged void fraction in the spout and the annulus were statistically analyzed. The flow characteristics of the gas-solid system in the two-dimensional spouted bed were clearly described by the simulation results.

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics coupled with discrete element method (CFD-DEM) has been widely used to understand the complicated fundamentals inside gas-solid fluidized beds. To realize large-scale simulations, CFD-DEM integrated with coarse-grain model (CG CFD-DEM) provides a feasible solution, and has led to a recent upsurge of interest. However, when dealing with large-scale simulations involving irregular-shaped particles such as biomass particles featuring elongated shapes, current CG models cannot function as normal because they are all developed for spherical particles. To address this issue, a CG CFD-DEM for nonspherical particles is proposed in this study, and the morphology of particles is characterized by the super-ellipsoid model. The effectiveness and accuracy of CG CFD-DEM for nonspherical particles are comprehensively evaluated by comparing the hydrodynamic behaviors with the results predicted by traditional CFD-DEM in a gas-solid fluidized bed. It is demonstrated that the proposed model can accurately model gas-solid flow containing nonspherical particles, merely the particle dynamics are somewhat lost due to the scaleup of particle size. Finally, the calculation efficiency of CG CFD-DEM is assessed, and the results show that CG CFD-DEM can largely reduce computational costs mainly by improving the calculation efficiency of DEM. In general, the proposed CG CFD-DEM for nonspherical particles strikes a good balance between efficiency and accuracy, and has shown its prospect as a high-efficiency alternative to traditional CFD-DEM for engineering applications involving nonspherical particles.

Abstract:In industrial applications, fluidized bed reactors with complex geometry are often used to process non-spherical particles, e.g., the biomass utilization. It is well known that CFD-DEM (Computational Fluid Dynamics/Discrete Element Method) is a powerful tool for studying the fluidization. However, few researchers had ever investigated the fluidization of non-spherical particles in the complex geometry using CFD-DEM. In this study, a robust and efficient CFD-DEM algorithm is correspondingly proposed, in which the non-spherical particles are represented by rod-like particles and are described by the super-ellipsoid model. An approach is incorporated into the CFD-DEM model to detect the contact between the rod-like particles and the complex geometry. The CFD-DEM coupling method has also been modified for the coupling between DEM and CFD with the unstructured mesh. Subsequently, the efficiency of the coupling method of CFD-DEM is tested. To validate the prediction accuracy of the CFD-DEM model, the simulations of the fluidization of rod-like particles in a fluidized bed with a horizontal immersed tube that represents the complex geometry are then compared with the corresponding experiments. The results demonstrate that the proposed CFD-DEM model has a rather high efficiency and accuracy for modeling the fluidization of rod-like particles in a fluidized bed with complex geometry.
Numerical investigation of the particle flow behaviors in a fluidized-bed drum by CFD-DEM

Abstract:The fluidized-bed drum technology involving the combination of a fluidized bed and a rotating drum is used for the granulation and coating of particles, which has been successfully applied in industry. Nevertheless, there should be few published fundamental studies for exploring the particle flow behaviors in a fluidized-bed drum, particularly in the particle level. Consequently, the particle-scale DEM (Discrete Element Method) was coupled with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in this work to simulate the particle-fluid flow system in a fluidized bed drum. The experiments in a small horizontal fluidized-bed drum were also carried out to validate the accuracy of our CFD-DEM model. Subsequently, the particle flows in a large inclined fluidized-bed drum were simulated by CFD-DEM, and the relatively comprehensive investigation for the influences of operational conditions (including the gas inlet velocity, drum rotation speed, drum inclination angle and fluidized-bed inclination angle) on the particle flow behaviors (e.g., the particle holdup, particle velocity and particle residence time) was carried out. According to the simulation results, the particle flow behaviors would be significantly affected by these operational conditions. However, increasing the gas inlet velocity could weaken the effects of drum rotation speed, drum inclination angle and fluidized-bed inclination angle.
A Model to Improve Granular Temperature in CFD-DEM Simulations

Abstract:CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamic-discrete element method) is a promising approach for simulating fluid–solid flows in fluidized beds. This approach generally under-predicts the granular temperature due to the use of drag models for the average drag force. This work develops a simple model to improve the granular temperature through increasing the drag force fluctuations on the particles. The increased drag force fluctuations are designed to match those obtained from PR-DNSs (particle-resolved direct numerical simulations). The impacts of the present model on the granular temperatures are demonstrated by posteriori tests. The posteriori tests of tri-periodic gas–solid flows show that simulations with the present model can obtain transient as well as steady-state granular temperature correctly. Moreover, the posteriori tests of fluidized beds indicated that the present model could significantly improve the granular temperature for the homogenous or slightly inhomogeneous systems, while it showed negligible improvement on the granular temperature for the significantly inhomogeneous systems.

Particle‐resolved Direct Numerical Simulation of Gas–solid Dynamics in Experimental Fluidized Beds

Abstract:Particle‐resolved direct numerical simulations (PR‐DNS) of a simplified experimental shallow fluidized bed and a laboratory bubbling fluidized bed are performed by using immersed boundary method coupled with a soft‐sphere model. Detailed information on gas flow and individual particles’ motion are obtained and analyzed to study the gas–solid dynamics. For the shallow bed, the successful predictions of particle coherent oscillation and bed expansion and contraction indicate all scales of motion in the flow are well captured by the PD‐DNS. For the bubbling bed, the PR‐DNS predicted time averaged particle velocities show a better agreement with experimental measurements than those of the computational fluid dynamics coupled with discrete element models (CFD‐DEM), which further validates the predictive capability of the developed PR‐DNS. Analysis of the PR‐DNS drag force shows that the prevailing CFD‐DEM drag correlations underestimate the particle drag force in fluidized beds. Abstract:Numerical simulations using the Gidaspow and Syamlal-O'Brien drag models have been performed based on the National Energy Technology Laboratory small scale challenge problem for three test cases. Validation tools including statistical moments, spectral analysis, and the autocorrelation function are used to analyze the pressure drop fluctuations. The analyses using these tools reveal a regime change from bubbling/slugging to turbulent flow with increasing superficial gas velocity. 1D discrete wavelet analysis is utilized in the study of the distribution of energy between the macro-, meso-, and microscales and also in the characterization of turbulence quantified in terms of the flatness factor. 1D fast Fourier transform energy spectra are constructed from the predicted and measured particle velocity data and compared. Predicted and measured granular temperatures are found to be in reasonable agreement with literature values.

Abstract:Fluidization of non-spherical particles is a common process in energy industries and chemical engineering. Understanding the fluidization of non-spherical particles is important to guide relevant processes. There already have been numerous studies which investigate the behaviors of different non-spherical particles during fluidization, but the investigations of the fluidization of polyhedral particles do not receive much attention. In this study, the investigation of the fluidization of polyhedral particles described by the polyhedron approach is conducted with a numerical CFD-DEM method. Experiments of the fluidization of three kinds of polyhedral particles are conducted under the same condition with corresponding simulations to validate the accuracy of our CFD-DEM model. The results indicate that our CFD-DEM model with the polyhedron approach can predict the behaviors of polyhedral particles with reasonable accuracy. Fluidization behaviors of different polyhedral particles are also investigated in this study. Compared to spherical particles, the motion of polyhedral particles is stronger, and mixing degree is higher under the same fluidization gas velocity.
An approach for drag correction based on the local heterogeneity for gas–solid flows

Abstract:The drag models typically used for gas-solids interaction are mainly developed based on homogeneous systems of flow passing fixed particle assembly. It has been shown that the heterogeneous structures, i.e., clusters and bubbles in fluidized beds, need to be resolved to account for their effect in the numerical simulations. Since the heterogeneity is essentially captured through the local concentration gradient in the computational cells, this study proposes a simple approach to account for the non-uniformity of solids spatial distribution inside a computational cell and its effect on the interaction between gas and solid phases. To validate this approach, the predicted drag coefficient has been compared to the results from direct numerical simulations. In addition, the need to account for this type of heterogeneity is discussed for a periodic riser flow simulation with highly resolved numerical grids and the impact of the proposed correction for drag is demonstrated. Abstract:Combined with the Eulerian approach, energy minimization multi-scale (EMMS) theory was used to develop a new theoretical model for the drag between the gas and solid phases in dense fluidized systems. The energy minimization was used in the solution procedure as an additional stability condition to close the conservation equations. The model was derived without introducing any empirical factors, so it can be used for more flow conditions in circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) than empirical models, especially for heterogeneous gas–solid two-phase flows that include cluster formation. Non-uniform particle distribution in computational cells, which is usually not described by the differential equations, is also considered in the new drag model. Both the drag values given by the model and simulation results for real systems agree well with experimental data. The results show that the model reasonably describes the interactions between the gas and particle phases in dense flows.
