Abstract:Controlling morphology of liquids on solid surfaces plays an important role in both fundamental research and practical applications. We found that, the shape of the liquid after contact between a droplet and a surface could be tuned by designing the hydrophilic micropillar arrays forming this surface. Such a wetting behavior is a result of imbibition in the micropillars, leading to specific final spreading distance and pattern of the droplet. During the spreading, the morphology of the droplet is controlled by both the arrangement and shape of the micropillars. The experimental results indicated that the surface energy barriers caused by the micropillar edges was a key factor accounting for the anisotropic spreading of the liquid. Moreover, the shape of the meniscus at the front location of the spreading liquid was rebuilt based on computational simulation, which agreed well with the experimental data. Interesting, the time-dependence of the displacement of the liquid transport at the edges was found to be different from that of a wicking film. Theoretical models were accordingly proposed to reveal the shape formation of liquids on such micropillar-structured surfaces.

Abstract:Controlling the impact behavior of a droplet on a superhydrophobic surface is a significant challenge for many applications. Instead of texturing the surface, this study investigated the effect of adding surfactants on the morphology of the droplet after it impacts superhydrophobic surfaces. The results showed that adding low concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant prevents fragmentation and splashing. High concentrations of SDS can inhibit rebound and allow droplets to be easily deposited on surfaces after impact. When the droplet size was 3.51 mm and the SDS concentration was above the critical micelle concentration, the contact time of the solution increased by a maximum of 1.30 times compared to that of pure water. In a highconcentration SDS solution, the surfactant molecules can quickly migrate to the newly generated interface during the spreading stage, reducing the interfacial tension and causing wetting changes. The results of this study are expected to contribute toward establishing a simple method to inhibit splashing and increasing contact time on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:It is widely acknowledged that splash impact can be suppressed by increasing the viscosity of the impinging drop. In this work, however, by imposing a highly viscous drop to a low-viscosity drop, it is demonstrated that the splash of the low-viscosity part of this Janus drop on superamphiphobic surfaces can be significantly promoted. The underlying mechanism is that the viscous stress exerted by the low-viscosity component drives the viscous component moving in the opposite direction, enhancing the spreading of the low-viscosity side and thereby its rim instability. The threshold velocity, above which splashing occurs, can be tuned by varying the viscosity ratio of the Janus drop. Moreover, the impact of the Janus drop can be employed to verify the mechanism of splash.
Controlling high-speed droplet splashing and superspreading behavior on anisotropic superhydrophobic leaf surfaces by ecofriendly Pseudogemini surfactants

Abstract:Background: Efficient deposition of high-speed droplets on superhydrophobic leaf surfaces remains an important challenge. For anisotropic wired superhydrophobic leaf surfaces, the splashing phenomenon is especially serious because it leads to the low effective utilization of pesticides by biological targets. The lost pesticides cause serious ecological environment pollution, therefore there is an urgent need to develop a green and sustainable cost-effective strategy to achieve efficient deposition of high-speed droplets on anisotropic superhydrophobic leaf surfaces at low dosage. Results: One type of green pseudogemini surfactant is constructed based on fatty acids and hexamethylenediamine by electrostatic interaction to control the splashing and spreading of high-speed droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces. The formed surfactant can not only achieve complete inhibition of the bouncing of droplets, but also promote rapid spreading on superhydrophobic leaf surfaces at very low usage. The efficient deposition and superspreading phenomenon are attributed to the rapid migration and adsorption of the surfactant from the dynamic spherical micelles at the newly formed solid-liquid interface, the network-like aggregated spherical micelles, and the Marangoni effect caused by the surface tension gradient. Moreover, the surfactant shows an excellent synergistic effect with herbicides to control weeds by inhibiting droplet splashing. Conclusion: This work provides a simpler, more effective and sustainable approach to utilize aggregated spherical micelles rather than conventional vesicles or wormlike micelles to improve the droplet deposition on superhydrophobic leaf surfaces and reduce the impact of surfactants and pesticides on the ecological environment. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The behavior of high-speed droplets impacting on superhydrophobic surfaces plays an essential role in many daily applications. Adding surfactants is one excellent approach to improve droplet retention through enhancing the solid-liquid interface interaction. However, the regulating of the impact process has been rarely concerned about the effect of molecular structure on it. In our work, we study the impact behavior of nonionic surfactants Triton X (TX) on superhydrophobic surfaces by characterizing the diffusion rate of surfactant molecules and the receding contact angle and adhesion of surfactant solution on surfaces. We reveal that droplets of TX surfactant solution can deposit better on superhydrophobic surfaces as hydrophilic (ethylene oxide, EO) chain length increasing, which is mainly attributed by the faster diffusion speed towards the newly formed interface during the spreading phase, leading to better wettability transition and larger pinning area on the substrate. Our work promotes the understanding of the mechanism that controls the impact behavior of droplets of surfactant by adjusting the EO chain length, which provides an effective strategy to control droplet deposition on superhydrophobic surfaces. Abstract:During water droplet impingement onto a rice-leaf-inspired grooved superhydrophobic surface, the unidirectional textures can reduce the solid-liquid contact time through modifying the droplet impact dynamics. The influence of the groove geometry on the splashing of impacting droplets is still unrevealed. In this study, we experimentally identify the droplet bouncing and splashing regimes on grooved superhydrophobic surfaces of varying parameters. Asymmetric spreading and retracting of droplets are observed on the surfaces, accompanied with obvious liquid jets generated within the grooves. As the impact velocity increases, secondary droplets are ejected from the rim of the liquid jets, which is the onset of droplet splashing on the grooved superhydrophobic surfaces. We find that the critical Weber number for the splash of liquid jets decreases with the groove width but increase with the droplet diameter. Scaling analysis is performed to model the splashing criteria and explain its dependence on groove parameters and droplet properties. This research advances the understanding of droplet splashing dynamics on textured superhydrophobic surfaces, which is promising for some agricultural and industrial applications.

Abstract:Droplet manipulation on superhydrophobic surfaces (DMSS) without conventional pipetting is an emerging liquid handling technology, which can be potentially used for diagnostic, analysis, and synthetic processes. Despite notable progress, controlling droplet motion on superhydrophobic surfaces by contactless acoustic waves is rarely reported. Herein, we report a contactless acoustic tweezer (CAT) for DMSS based on establishing ultrasonic standing wave between an ultrasound transducer (UST) and a superhydrophobic substrate to manipulate droplets without physical contact. The CAT utilizes acoustic radiation forces to trap and move droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces, which allows for precise and controllable movement of droplets by controlling the movement of the UST. Small droplets with volume less than 20 & mu;L can be levitated in mid-air for out-plane manipulation, and large droplets with volume up to 500 & mu;L can be trapped for in-plane manipulation. Experimental results demonstrate the versatility of the CAT for manipulating droplets with various compositions and volumes on various superhydrophobic substrates, offering a versatile and cross-contamination-free liquid handling approach for applications, including but not limited to high-throughput surface-enhanced Raman scattering.
Fluid Property Effects on the Splashing in Teapot Effect

Abstract:Liquid flowing on a curved solid surface usually leads to a typical teapot effect. As the jet velocity increases, the liquid detaches from a curved solid surface completely in one streamline or partially in multiple streamlines. We called the latter splashing. Former studies attributed the splashing behavior to the breaking of the balance between the centrifugal force and the pressure drop across the liquid flow. This study disclosed that the parameters of surface tension, viscosity, and additive molecules of liquid significantly affected the jet splashing in teapot effect. A liquid with a higher Weber number (lower surface tension) and a lower Reynolds number (higher viscosity) prefers to separate from the solid surface in one streamline. Besides, a liquid with larger molecular weight additives is easier to splash. Molecular dynamics simulations disclosed that a higher water molecule density around the additive molecules with a larger cohesive force could more effectively suppress splashing. There is no splashing when the cohesive force is larger than the capillary adhesion force. Otherwise, splashing would occur. This study discloses the importance of cohesive force in the splashing in teapot effect, which might provide an effective guide for industrial applications by tuning the splashing.

Abstract:Droplet impacting on solid or liquid interfaces is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature. Although complete rebound of droplets is widely observed on superhydrophobic surfaces, the bouncing of droplets on liquid is usually vulnerable due to easy collapse of entrapped air pocket underneath the impinging droplet. Here, we report a superhydrophobic-like bouncing regime on thin liquid film, characterized by the contact time, the spreading dynamics, and the restitution coefficient independent of underlying liquid film. Through experimental exploration and theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that the manifestation of such a superhydrophobic-like bouncing necessitates an intricate interplay between the Weber number, the thickness and viscosity of liquid film. Such insights allow us to tune the droplet behaviours in a well-controlled fashion. We anticipate that the combination of superhydrophobic-like bouncing with inherent advantages of emerging slippery liquid interfaces will find a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Designing intelligent superhydrophobic surfaces with versatile surface properties has garnered scholarly attention in field of heterogeneous catalysis, lab-on-chip, water harvesting, etc. However, the precise modulation of fluid adhesion on superhydrophobic surfaces, particularly when being applied as coatings, remains a challenge. Here we employ a "glue + powder" method for the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable droplet adhesion by embedding microparticles with mixed shapes. By adjusting the mixing ratio of rod-like and spherical particles, the sliding angle of superhydrophobic coating can be facilely controlled as well as the underwater bubble holding ability. During the dewetting process, the difference in the contact line lengths between micro-rod and micro-sphere contributes to the varying droplet adhesive force from 43.7 μN to 109.4 μN, which corresponds to the rolling-off angle change of a 10 μL droplet from 9.6° to 45.7°. Furthermore, by mixing fumed silica with branched structure, the lowest range of the rolling-off angle adjustment can be extended down to 0.5°, showing a precise and universal strategy for tuning the surface adhesion. On the basis of the meticulous manipulation of surface adhesion, controlling processes of single droplet and droplets accumulation can be fulfilled, with implications for enhancing the functionality of current superhydrophobic materials. Taking the advantage of the convenient and reliable fabrication method, a series of demonstration including manual droplet holders, multi-tiered droplet capturing interface, droplet sieving platforms, and gravity-driven droplet reactors has been realized. We envision that the precise control of droplet adhesion on superhydrophobic materials should further provides substantial opportunities for innovating fluid manipulation systems possessing heightened operability and multifunctionality.

Abstract:By introducing anisotropic micropatterns on a superhydrophobic surface, we demonstrate that water microdroplets can coalesce and leap over the surface spontaneously along a prescribed direction. This controlled behavior is attributed to anisotropic liquid-solid adhesion. An analysis relating the preferential leaping probability to the geometrical parameters of the system is presented with consistent experimental results. Surfaces with this rare quality demonstrate many unique characteristics, such as self-powered, and relatively long-distance transport of microdroplets by relay coalescence-induced leaping.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces garner tremendous research attention due to their potential applications in the fields of oil-water separation membrane, self-cleaning, and anti-icing systems. However, the reported superhydrophobic materials that achieve low-surface-tension (<60 mN m(-1)) liquid repellency are typically prepared using perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), which pose significant risks to the natural environment and human health. Here a concept based on the excluded volume effect in polymer dilute solutions is explored to achieve a hydrophobic flexible polymer-chain wrapping of multidimensional particles, which forms a nonadherent soft-shell-hard-core structure and maintains the original structural integrity of particles. The prepared fluoro-free super-repellent multidimensional particles can be spray-coated and dip-coated on different substrates to prepare large-scale superhydrophobic coatings, which exhibit excellent low-surface-tension (42.6-50 mN m(-1)) liquid repellency superior to the reported fluoro-free superhydrophobic materials. Benefiting from the strong interaction of super-repellent particles with flexible polymer chains, the superhydrophobic coatings show unexpected wear resistance and durability. This first demonstration of hydrophobic polymer-wrapped particles for repelling low-surface-tension liquids provides insights into next-generation fluoro-free superhydrophobic materials.
Reducing the contact time of impacting water drops on superhydrophobic surfaces by liquid-like coatings

Abstract:Surfaces that can rapidly shed impacting drops are important for a wide range of applications, including anti icing, dropwise condensation and miniaturized drones. Previous strategies to reduce the contact time of impacting drops are primarily based on engineering superhydrophobic surfaces through introducing secondary textures, either macroscopic or nanoscopic, or constructing specifically designed nanotextures. Here, a facile and effective approach is demonstrated to reduce the contact time of superhydrophobic surfaces by simply replacing the widely used perfluorosilane (i.e., trichloro (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyl) silane, PFOS) coating with liquid like perfluorinated polyether (PFPE) surface chemistry. Though their apparent contact angles are comparable, the PFPE-coated superhydrophobic surface exhibits a reduction of contact time up to 26% compared to the PFOScoated counterpart, attributed to enhanced retraction speed on the former surface. Remarkably, while a classical inertial model predicts a merely 3% difference in retraction time between the PFPE-and the PFOS-coated surfaces, a drastic reduction of retraction time by 12-32% is observed. The improved retraction dynamics on the liquid-like surface is suggested to be caused by the low contact angle hysteresis and enhanced interface slippage on the liquid-like coating. This study offers a general strategy to enhance dynamic liquid repellency of super hydrophobic surfaces for diverse applications.
From petal effect to lotus effect: a facile solution immersion process for the fabrication of super-hydrophobic surfaces with controlled adhesion.

Abstract:In this paper, a convenient approach based on the reaction between an alkyl thiol and hierarchical structured Cu(OH)(2) substrates is reported for the fabrication of super-hydrophobic surfaces with controlled adhesion. This reaction can etch the Cu(OH)(2) microstructures and simultaneously introduce a coating with low surface energy. By simply controlling the reaction time or the chain length of the thiol, super-hydrophobic surfaces with controlled adhesion can be achieved, and the adhesive force between the surface and the water droplet can be adjusted from extreme low (similar to 14 mu N) to very high (similar to 65 mN). The tunable effect of the adhesion is ascribed to the different wetting states for the droplet on the surface that results from the change of the morphology and microstructure scale after the thiolate reaction. Noticeably, the as-prepared surfaces are acid/alkali-resisting; the acidic and basic water droplets have similar contact angles and adhesive forces to that of the neutral water droplet. Moreover, we demonstrate a proof of water droplet transportation for application in droplet-based microreactors via our surfaces. We believe that the results reported here would be helpful for the further understanding of the effect of wetting states on the surface adhesion and the fabrication principle for a super-hydrophobic surface with controlled adhesion.
Making superhydrophobic splashes by surface cooling

Abstract:We study experimentally the enhancement of splashing due to solidification. Investigating the impact of water drops on dry smooth surfaces, we show that the transition velocity to splash can be drastically reduced by cooling the surface below the liquid melting temperature. We find that at very low temperatures (below $-60 ^\circ \rm C$), the splashing behaviour becomes independent of surface undercooling and presents the same characteristics as on ambient temperature superhydrophobic surfaces. This resemblance arises from an increase of the dynamic advancing contact angle of the lamella with surface undercooling, going from the isothermal hydrophilic to the superhydrophobic behaviour. We propose that crystal formation can affect the dynamic contact angle of the lamella, which would explain this surprising transition. Finally, we show that the transition from hydrophilic to superydrophobic behaviour can also be characterized quantitatively on the dynamics of the ejecta.

Abstract:The dynamic impact behavior of droplets from solid surfaces has attracted increasing interest, especially propelled by the advances in the bio-inspired interfacial materials. In this work, we investigate the impact and bouncing dynamics of ethylene glycol droplets containing silica nanoparticles on superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS). We find that the rebounding of droplets from SHS is highly dependent on the impact velocity and suspension concentrations. By increasing the impact velocity or suspension concentrations, the probability of droplet bouncing from SHS is greatly reduced. The presence of nanoparticles can significantly increase the viscous energy dissipation inside the liquid droplets, therefore suppressing the jumping from surfaces. Based on the energy dissipation characterization, we also find the critical concentration to determine the manifestation of the viscous effect, above which the liquid suspensions exhibit non-Newtonian fluid properties. Our study provides an efficient approach to dynamically control the liquid jumping behaviors on SHS by tailoring the suspension concentrations. The insights learned from this study can be very useful in many industrial applications.

Abstract:Controlled liquid adhesion behaviors on super-wetting surfaces have gained significant attention, however, precise controlling of adhesion behavior is extremely hard to realize due to some inherent limitation in surface chemistry or morphology. Herein, we report a silicone-oil-infused magnetic porous polydimethylsiloxane (SMPP) surface with magnetically tunable super-wetting behaviors. Benefiting from the magnetic-field-responsive structure and interconnected porous characteristics, the SMPP can use magnetic field to control the seepage and absorption of silicone oil in the micropore channels, thereby precisely changing the adhesion of the water droplets on the surface. Compared to conventional super-wetting surfaces, this SMPP surface displays reversible in-situ conversion from ultra-high to ultra-low droplet adhesion with sliding angles ranging from 3° to 180° that hold up well even after severe cutting or abrasion. We also demonstrated that this tunable adhesion behavior can be used not only to enhance droplet manipulation in spatiotemporal but also to design unique microfluidic microreactors and antigravity transport devices. We envision that this proof-in-concept surface can serve as an important component of integrated control systems for intelligent manipulators, biochemical reactions, fluid transport, and biomedical analysis.

Abstract:A simple and novel approach is proposed to control location, shape, contact angle, and sliding of droplet on superhydrophobic aluminum alloy surfaces scanned by laser. By firstly etched suitably, followed by coating with stearic acid, aluminum alloy surface is possible to exhibit the property of superhydrophobic behavior. Irradiating such surface with specific hydrophilic patterns, by a relatively high power and precisely controlled laser, allows fixing the location and shape of water droplets. Suitably altering scanning time and power of the laser beam, the fabricated surface facilitates the control of the contact angle of droplet. Properly railing hydrophilic lines/curves on such superhydrophobic surface facilitates constraining droplet to slide and water to flow in certain controllable orientations. Furthermore, relevant likely mechanisms involved in controlling the location, shape, contact angle, and sliding of water droplet on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surface have also been elucidated systematically on the basis of analyzation of electrical scanning images.

Abstract:Surface wettability gradient from super-hydrophobicity to hydrophobicity was produced by creating surface roughness gradient on polished silicon wafer with excimer laser. Water droplets move spontaneously towards a designed route on this gradient surface. In addition, an irreversible moving behavior with good resistance to external disturbances was observed, which makes the surface suitable for liquid directional transfers. It was also found that the wettability gradient does not always agree with the roughness gradient, which depends on the wetting mode of the droplets. A wetting mode transition from Cassie-Baxter to Wenzel was demonstrated necessary for generating self-motion of water drops. Control of water droplet motion can be achieved by employing these roughness gradient surfaces.
