Abstract:Rational numbers, except those with denominators of the form 2a5b, have a recurring decimal expansion. It is usual to write these digits from left to right. We give a procedure to write the decimal digits from the opposite end—right to left.

Abstract:Computations on a computer with a floating point arithmetic are always approximate. Conversely, computations with the rational arithmetic (in a computer algebra system, for example) are always absolutely exact and reproducible both on other computers and (theoretically) by hand. Consequently, these computations can be demonstrative in a sense that a proof obtained with their help is no different from a traditional one (computer assisted proof). However, usually such computations are impossible in a sufficiently complicated problem due to limitations on resources of memory and time. We propose a mechanism of rounding off rational numbers in computations with rational arithmetic, which solves this problem (of resources), i.e., computations can still be demonstrative but do not require unbounded resources. We give some examples of implementation of standard numerical algorithms with this arithmetic. The results have applications to analytical number theory.

Abstract:The main objective of this article is to study all numbers that have occurred so far in the theoretical discussions were real (or complex) numbers in the strict mathematical sense. That is, they were to be conceived as infinite decimal fractions, or as Dedekind cuts. For the purposes of computation such numbers have to be approximated by real numbers of a rather special type, such as terminating decimal fractions, or other rational numbers. The present article is devoted to a study of the number systems that can be used for the purpose of computation.

Abstract:Given a positive rational number $n/d$ with $d$ odd, its odd greedy expansion starts with the largest odd denominator unit fraction at most $n/d$, adds the largest odd denominator unit fraction so the sum is at most $n/d$, and continues as long as the sum is less than $n/d$. It is an open question whether this expansion always has finitely many terms. Given a fixed positive integer $n$, we find all reduced fractions with numerator $n$ whose odd greedy expansion has length $2$. Given $m-1$ odd positive integers, we find all rational numbers whose odd greedy expansion has length $m$ and begins with these numbers as denominators. Given $m-2$ compatible odd positive integers, we find an infinite family of rational numbers whose odd greedy expansion has length $m$ and begins with these numbers as denominators.

Abstract:Power series representations for special functions are computationally satisfactory only in the vicinity of the expansion point. Thus, it is an obvious idea to use instead Padé approximants or other rational functions constructed from sequence transformations. However, neither Padé approximants nor sequence transformation utilize the information which is avaliable in the case of a special function -- all power series coefficients as well as the truncation errors are explicitly known -- in an optimal way. Thus, alternative rational approximants, which can profit from additional information of that kind, would be desirable. It is shown that in this way a rational approximant for the digamma function can be constructed which possesses a transformation error given by an explicitly known series expansion.

Abstract:Partial fraction expansion (pfe) is a classic technique used in many fields of pure or applied mathematics. The paper focuses on the pfe of general rational functions in both factorized and expanded form. Novel, simple, and recursive formulas for the computation of residues and residual polynomial coefficients are derived. The proposed pfe methods require only simple pure-algebraic operations in the whole computation process. They do not involve derivatives when tackling proper functions and require no polynomial division when dealing with improper functions. The methods are efficient and very easy to apply for both computer and manual calculation. Various numerical experiments confirm that the proposed methods can achieve quite desirable accuracy even for pfe of rational functions with multiple high-order poles or some tricky ill-conditioned poles.

Abstract:Repdigits are natural numbers formed by the repetition of a single digit. In this paper, we study the problem of writing repdigits as the difference of two balancing or Lucas-balancing numbers. The method of proof involves the application of Baker's theory for linear forms in logarithms of algebraic numbers and the Baker-Davenport reduction procedure. Computations are done with the help of a simple computer program in {\it Mathematica}.

Abstract:It has been more than twenty years since Moshe Newman, based on work by Neil Calkin and Herbert Wilf, introduced an explicit bijection between the rational and natural numbers. Interestingly, this bijection is dynamic in nature. Indeed, Newman's map has the property that the orbit of zero provides the required bijection. Claudio Bonanno and Stefano Isola, using continued fractions expansions, described the dynamics of its first return time map T. They proved that it is topologically conjugated to the dyadic odometer. In this article, we prove that the correct numerical system needed to analyze this map is the backward continued fractions. Indeed, this approach has the advantage that it provides explicitly the action of T on the expansion. As a by-product, we naturally obtain an explicit formula for Minkowski's question mark function in terms of backward continued fractions. The whole point of Newman was to provide an explicit bijection, our approach shares the same taste for the explicit.

This paper aims to prove that the conventional sum-to-infinity formula, S∞= a/( 1−r) can be used to quantify 10-adic numbers. This study acts as a mathematical bridge between the decimal and p-adic worlds, aiming to prove that the infinite geometric series formula can be used while converting from 10-adic to decimal numbers, when r = 10n and where n ∈ Z+.

Abstract:Adler, Keane, and Smorodinsky showed that if one concatenates the finite continued fraction expansions of the sequence of rationals \[ \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{2}{3}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{2}{4}, \frac{3}{4}, \frac{1}{5}, \cdots \] into an infinite continued fraction expansion, then this new number is normal with respect to the continued fraction expansion. We show a variety of new constructions of continued fraction normal numbers, including one generated by the subsequence of rationals with prime numerators and denominators: \[ \frac{2}{3}, \frac{2}{5}, \frac{3}{5}, \frac{2}{7}, \frac{3}{7}, \frac{5}{7},\cdots. \]

Abstract:We investigate the topological structure of the decimal expansions of the three famous naturally occurring irrational numbers, $\pi$, $e$, and golden ratio, by explicitly calculating the diversity of the pair distributions of the ten digits ranging from 0 to 9. And we find that there is a universal two-phase behavior, which collapses into a single curve with a power law phenomenon. We further reveal that the two-phase behavior is closely related to general aspects of phase transitions in physical systems. It is then numerically shown that such characteristics originate from an intrinsic property of genuine random distribution of the digits in decimal expansions. Thus, mathematical irrational numbers are not so physically irrational as long as they have such an intrinsic property.

Abstract:In 2012 Chen and Singer introduced the notion of discrete residues for rational functions as a complete obstruction to rational summability. More explicitly, for a given rational function f(x), there exists a rational function g(x) such that f(x) = g(x+1) - g(x) if and only if every discrete residue of f(x) is zero. Discrete residues have many important further applications beyond summability: to creative telescoping problems, thence to the determination of (differential-)algebraic relations among hypergeometric sequences, and subsequently to the computation of (differential) Galois groups of difference equations. However, the discrete residues of a rational function are defined in terms of its complete partial fraction decomposition, which makes their direct computation impractical due to the high complexity of completely factoring arbitrary denominator polynomials into linear factors. We develop a factorization-free algorithm to compute discrete residues of rational functions, relying only on gcd computations and linear algebra.

Abstract:For every non-negative integer $a$ and positive integer $b$, the congruence speed of the tetration $^{b}a$ is the difference between the number of the rightmost digits of $^{b}a$ that are the same as those of $^{b+1}a$ and the number of the rightmost digits of $^{b-1}a$ that are the same as those of $^{b}a$. In the decimal numeral system, if the given base $a$ is not a multiple of $10$, as $b:=b(a)$ becomes sufficiently large, we know that the value of the congruence speed does not depend on $b$ anymore, otherwise the number of the new rightmost zeros of $^{b}a$ drastically increases for any unit increment of $b$ and, for this reason, we have not previously described the congruence speed of $a$ when it is a multiple of $10$. This short note fills the gap by giving the formula for the congruence speed of the mentioned values of $a$ at any given height of the hyperexponent.

Abstract:Classical continued fractions can be introduced in the field of p p -adic numbers, where p p -adic continued fractions offer novel perspectives on number representation and approximation. While numerous p p -adic continued fraction expansion algorithms have been proposed by the researchers, the establishment of several excellent properties, such as the Lagrange's Theorem for classic continued fractions, which indicates that every quadratic irrationals can be expanded periodically, remains elusive. In this paper, we introduce several new algorithms designed for expanding algebraic numbers in Q p \mathbb {Q}_p for a given prime p p . We give an upper bound of the number of partial quotients for the expansion of rational numbers, and prove that for small primes p p , our algorithm generates periodic continued fraction expansions for all quadratic irrationals. Experimental data demonstrates that our algorithms exhibit better performance in the periodicity of expansions for quadratic irrationals compared to the existing algorithms. Furthermore, for bigger primes p p , we propose a potential approach to establish a p p -adic continued fraction expansion algorithm. As before, the algorithm is designed to expand algebraic numbers in Q p \mathbb {Q}_p , while generating periodic expansions for all quadratic irrationals in Q p \mathbb {Q}_p .
