Abstract:We performed first-principles calculations for the pressure-induced martensitic phase transition from the ground state ferromagnetic bcc phase to a nonmagnetic hcp phase in Fe under hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic pressure based on density-functional theory, employing the pseudopotentional and plane-wave method. The calculated results show that the magnetic moment of bcc iron under non-hydrostatic conditions decreases faster than that under hydrostatic conditions as the stress increases from 0 GPa to 18 GPa. Theoretical calculations prove that non-hydrostatic conditions can significantly reduce the bcc phase to hcp phase transition pressure. The critical stress for bcc-to-hcp transformation decreases linearly as the non-hydrostatic effect increases. The physical origins of the influence of non-hydrostatic pressure on the transition pressure are discussed.

Abstract:In-situ time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction and electrical resistance measurements are performed to determine the behaviors of PbS under pressure and temperature up to 5 GPa and 773 K. The phase diagram in our experimental range is shown based on electrical resistance measurements. Both the two approaches indicate that only the starting cubic PbS phase remains stable when the temperature reaches above 573 K. The Rietveld refinements of the neutron diffraction patterns verify that the orthorhombic (ortho) PbS phase has a Cmcm space group. The fitting of experimental data with the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state at 300 K, yields the bulk modulus of the cubic phase as K0T = 60.0 ± 0.5 GPa with its pressure derivative K0′ fixed to 4.2.

Abstract:An investigation into the structural stabilities of Fe2P under high pressure is conducted using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. Our results demonstrate that the stable phase of Fe2P should be the Pnma with the lowest total energy at lower pressure, and the P (6) over bar 2m and Pnma phases would transform to the P (3) over barm phase with larger coordination number of iron at 125 GPa and 153 GPa respectively. A magnetic moment collapse is observed at about 28 GPa in the P (6) over bar 2m phase.

Abstract:The structural evolution of Ti under high pressure up to 200 GPa at 0 K has been investigated by first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. A reversible hcp to fcc phase transition of Ti at 0 K under pressure is observed. The phase transitions hcp -> fcc and fcc -> hcp occur at P similar to 81.4 GPa and similar to 133.0 GPa, respectively. Accompanied by a reversible phase transition, the axial ratio (c/a) of hcp-Ti changes from similar to 1.65 to similar to 1.91, the c axial has negative compressibility, and a axial has positive compressibility, while the change of volume is continuous. The abrupt change of hcp-Ti structure and the electron transfer behavior similar to that of fcc-Ti under pressure may promote the phase transition of hcp-Ti to fcc-Ti. The analysis of DOS indicates the fcc structure is relatively stable compared with the hcp structure at P = 90 GPa. The high pressure limit of elastic stability for fcc-Ti is similar to 90 GPa. The weak bonding between atoms under high pressure explains the structure instability of fcc-Ti.

Abstract:The strongly correlated material FeSi exhibits several unusual thermal, magnetic, and structural properties under varying pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions. It is a potential thermoelectric alloy and a materials of several geological implications as a possible constituent at the Earth's core mantle boundary (CMB). The phase transition behavior and lattice dynamics of FeSi under different P-T conditions remain elusive. A previous theoretical work predicted a pressure induced B20-B2 transition at ambient temperature, yet the transition is only observed at high P-T conditions in the experiments. Furthermore, the closing of the electronic gap due to a dramatic renormalization of the electronic structure and phonon anomalies has been reported based on density function calculations. In this study we have performed high pressure powder diffraction and Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (NRIXS) measurements up to 120 GPa to understand the phase stability and the lattice dynamics. Our study shows evidence for a nonhydrostatic stress induced B20-B2 transition in FeSi around 36 GPa for the first time. The Fe partial phonon density of states (PDOS) and thermal parameters were derived from NRIXS up to 120 GPa with the density function theoretical (DFT) calculations. These calculations further predict and are consistent with pressure-induced metallization and band gap closing around 12 GPa.

Abstract:A Z1-type Fe 3 Pd alloy with negative enthalpy of formation at ambient pressure has been discovered recently, however, its physical properties under high pressures remain unclear. In this work, the effect of pressure on the magnetic, electronic, lattice dynamic, mechanical and thermal properties of the Z1-Fe 3 Pd are investigated thoroughly by the first-principles methods. Under high pressures, the Z1-Fe 3 Pd are energetically favorable compared to other types Fe 3 Pd structures. A pressure-induced magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetic (FM) to ferrimagnetic (FIM) state are found, and the FM and FIM states are dynamically and mechanically stable under high pressures. The electronic density of states for both the FM and FIM states are analyzed to understand their magnetism. These two magnetic configurations are ductile, but their elastic properties and anisotropy are quite different. Additionally, the FM and FIM states have high uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy, the FM state is a semi-hard magnet, and the FIM state undergoes a transition from hard magnet to semi-hard magnet with pressure. Finally, the volume and linear thermal expansion coefficients under high pressure are calculated, and the anisotropy of thermal expansion is also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Recent experimental work shows that FePS$_3$ undergoes phase transitions from $C2/m$ ($\beta\sim107^{\circ}$) to $C2/m$ ($\beta\sim90^{\circ}$) at $6$ GPa and then to metallic $P\bar{3}1m$ at $14$ GPa, with the magnetic ordering wave vector turning from $k=(01\frac{1}{2})$ to $k=(010)$ at $2$ GPa and to short-range magnetic order accompanying the insulator-metal transition. By preserving the magnetic point groups in $ab \ initio$ calculations we report the following: (1) We successfully reproduce the first magnetic structure transition at $1.2$ GPa and briefly discuss the influence of the Hubbard U parameter on this transition. This isostructural transition causes a change of the Brillouin zone from base-centered monoclinic to primitive monoclinic, and an indrect band gap to direct band gap transition. (2) There is a rotation of the Fe-S octahedron about $0.5^\circ$ through the $[001]$ axis before the neighboring layers shift. (3) The shift between neighboring layers is predicted to occur at $10.0$ GPa and reverses the energy order between $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{xy}$. (4) A sudden decrease of Fe-S bond length to $2.20$ Å\ accompanies the vanishing of magnetic moment in the insulator-metal transition. Our work shows the importance of symmetries of magnetic structures in pressure-induced phase transition of magnetic systems.

Abstract:Fe-S-P compounds have been observed in many meteorites and could be the important components in planetary cores. Here we investigated the phase stability of Fe-3(S,P) solid solutions and synthesized high-quality Fe3(Si_ 13x) high-pressure phases in the multi-anvil press. The physical properties of Fe-3(S0.5130.5) were further studied in the diamond-anvil cell by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and emission spectroscopy. The solubility of S in the Fe-3(S,P) solid solution increases with increasing pressure. The minimum pressure to synthesize the pure Fe3S and Fe-3(S0.13P0.87) is about 21 and 8 GPa, respectively. The observed discontinuity in unit-cell parameters at about 18 GPa is caused by the high-spin to low spin transition of iron, supported by X-ray emission spectroscopy data. The sulfur solubility in Fe-3(S,P) solid solutions could be an excellent pressure indicator if such solid solutions are found in nature.

Abstract:The pressure-induced tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition of PbTiO3 is investigated in the pressure range of −5 to 35GPa using the density-functional theory with the local density approximation. The spontaneous polarization and spontaneous strain, calculated as the order parameters, are found to decrease abruptly at 32GPa, while the volume of the unit cell to decrease continuously, displaying a non-purely first-order character consistent with the experimental results. The structural explanation for the crossover in the order of the phase transition in PbTiO3 (from first to second order) is generally discussed in terms of the bonding structure.

Abstract:The high-pressure behaviors of crystalline BeF2 are investigated theoretically by using first-principles plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory within the local density approximation (LDA). The results demonstrate that the sequence of the pressure-induced phase transitions of BeF2 under 50GPa is from the α-quartz-type, to coesite-type, rutile-type, and α-PbO2-type structures. Moreover, the electronic properties of BeF2 with different crystal structures are analyzed. The results show that the electronic structures of BeF2 are fairly insensitive to the particular crystal structures, which are determined mainly by the BeF4 tetrahedron (or BeF6 octahedra). At last, the effects of pressure on the electronic structures of BeF2 are discussed. The band gap of BeF2 is found to become broader with increase of pressure.
Experimental study and thermodynamic calculations of phase relations in the Fe–C system at high pressure

Abstract:We have conducted a series of melting experiments in the Fe–C system at pressures up to 25 GPa in the temperature range of 1473–2073 K. The results define the phase relations at several pressures, including the eutectic temperature and composition as a function of pressure, carbon partitioning between solid iron and liquid, and change of melting relations involving iron carbides. In order to interpolate and extrapolate the phase relations over a wide pressure and temperature range, we have established a comprehensive thermodynamic model in the Fe–C binary system. The calculated phase diagrams at pressures of 5, 10, and 20 GPa reproduce the experimental data, including the solubility of carbon in solid iron and the effect of pressure on the eutectic temperature and composition. The formation of Fe7C3 at pressures above 5 GPa is correctly modeled and the change of phase relations in the Fe–C system between 5 and 10 GPa is captured in the model. The model provides predictions of the phase relations at 136 GPa and 330 GPa, based on existing knowledge of the thermochemistry of the system at lower pressure. The calculated phase relations can be used to understand the role of carbon during inner core crystallization, predicting carbon distribution between the inner and outer cores and mineralogy of the solid inner core.
Pressure induced novel compounds in the Hf-O system from first-principles calculations

Abstract:Using first-principles evolutionary simulations, we have systematically investigated phase stability in the Hf-O system at pressure up to 120 GPa. New compounds Hf5O2, Hf3O2, HfO and HfO3 are discovered to be thermodynamically stable at certain pressure ranges and a new stable high-pressure phase is found for Hf2O with space group Pnnm and anti-CaCl2-type structure. Both P62m-HfO and P4m2-Hf2O3 show semimetallic character. Pnnm-HfO3 shows interesting structure, simultaneously containing oxide O2- and peroxide [O-O]2- anions. Remarkably, it is P62m-HfO rather than OII-HfO2 that exhibits the highest mechanical characteristics among Hf-O compounds. Pnnm-Hf2O, Imm2-Hf5O2, P31m-Hf2O and P4m2-Hf2O3 phases also show superior mechanical properties, these phases can be quenched to ambient pressure and their properties can be exploited.

Abstract:FeP with MnP-type structure is isostructural with high-pressure FeS polymorphs (both post-troilite FeS and FeS VI), which are believed to exist in planetary cores. Due to similar PTX phase diagrams of binary Fe–P and Fe–S, phosphorus can incorporate with iron–sulfur at planetary core conditions. To understand such substitution and the high-pressure behavior of FeP, we investigate the structural stability of FeP up to 15.6GPa and 1800±200K by combined in situ powder X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Our experimental results show that FeP remains the MnP-type structure throughout the PT range covered. Isothermal equation of state of FeP is obtained with V0 of 92.91(8)Å3, B0 of 205(7)GPa, and B′0 of 4. The shortest axis of the MnP-type FeP cell, the b-axis, is the most compressible, due to the soft edge-sharing octahedra along the b-axis. Mössbauer results show that no electronic structure changes occur up to 15.6GPa, but indicate decreasing distortion of FeP6 octahedron with pressure increasing. The behavior of FeP is quite different from that of FeS under high pressure and high temperature, suggesting that phosphorus will have a significant impact on stability and electronic properties of FeS within terrestrial planet cores.

Abstract:Fe3P is a candidate component in planetary cores. We have investigated high-pressure behavior of Fe3P by first-principles calculations and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Theoretical calculations reveal a magnetic collapse at 40–65 GPa, accompanied by a structural transition. The possible high-pressure polymorph is either a distorted cementite structure (Pnma) or a P4/mnc structure. By combining synchrotron X-ray diffraction and laser-heating diamond anvil cell techniques, we have collected in situ diffraction patterns of Fe3P up to 64 GPa and 1650 K. The high-pressure phase transition from I4¯ to P4/mnc structure predicted by the first-principles calculations was confirmed. Discontinuous variations of lattice constants and thermal expansion coefficients with pressure were observed around 17 and 40 GPa, indicating a possible magnetic transition developed in this range, which are in agreement with the calculated results.

Abstract:C15 Laves phase intermetallic CeFe2 2 show reduced lattice constant and lower Curie temperature due to a strong 4 f-3d d hybridization. This hybridization is also believed to cause a ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition in CeFe2 2 under hydrostatic pressure. In this work, we use first-principles calculations to study the magnetic stability of CeFe2 2 under high pressure. With LDA functional, we predict a ferromagnetic-toantiferromagnetic phase transition of CeFe2 2 at 42.5 GPa. We also study how the projected density of states of Ce-4f f and Fe-3d d evolves with pressure. For both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, we find an enhanced hybridization between Ce-4f f and Fe-3d d states which favors antiferromagnetism with the increase of pressure.

Abstract:The high-pressure and high-temperature structural behavior of FeP2 is investigated by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction combined with a laser heating technique up to 70GPa and at least 1800 K. No phase transition of FeP2 occurs up to 68 GPa at room temperature. While a new phase of FeP2 assigned to the CuAl2-type structure (I4/mcm, Z = 4) is observed at 70 GPa after laser-heating. This new phase presents a quenchable property on decompression to ambient conditions. Our results update previous experimental data and are consistent with theoretical studies.

Abstract:The pressure-induced structural phase transition and metallization of FePSe 3 and MnPSe 3 are investigated from ambient pressure to 40 GPa by first-principles calculation. FePSe 3 and MnPSe 3 undergo reversible structural transitions from R3 ̄ structure to C2/m structure and then to P3 ̄1m structure. The structural phase transitions of FePSe 3 are at about 6 GPa and 13 GPa, while the pressure points are at approximately 13 GPa and 25 GPa for MnPSe 3 , reflecting from pressure-dependent enthalpy calculation, cell volume collapses, and sudden changes of lattice parameters. The computed metallization transition is also observed at around 8 GPa and 16 GPa owing to energy-band closure for FePSe 3 and MnPSe 3 , respectively. The metallic character of XPSe 3 is strengthened with increasing pressure based on the electronic energy band and electron density of states. The layer sliding of atoms is revealed using the P 2 -P 3 atom pair of XPSe 3 during structural phase transitions. The paper is conducive to considering the electronic structure and metallization of transition metal thiophosphates XPSe 3 -type family under extreme conditions.
